I need help with everything - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I am completely lost on what to do, I have roamed the forums for quite some time, and actually managed to update my phone twice before.
I've just forgotten everything about it, and it's for some reason really hard to find anything that is actually dummy proof explained. If anyone could help me out I would be thankful.

Please help me, I am so lost, apparently I am supposed to use Odin and install or flash or whatever the **** a kernel, but I can't. Everwhere I look I find that I need a .tar file. Which doesn't exist in ANY of the things I have downloaded. I am going insane right now, I've had a useless phone for two days now. Please help me.

It would be easier to find the zImage of a kernel and installing it using heimdall(semaphore also contains the tar files). Search up semaphore kernel and download the respective version that is compatible with your android version choice. I know there are 's' versions but download the non 's' version for now. There are tar files there so you can flash with odin. but if you want to use heimdall, one of the zips(or tar files) contain the zImage file and extract it into the folder where you have extracted heimdall(well if you don't have heimdall, google it and download it.) If you don't know how to use heimdall, look at tutorials such as from cyanogenmod or on xda forums.
Hope this helps, gsstudios

Problem with return

I'm having to return my Galaxy S for a replacement, however before i realised there was a hardware issue, i flashed it.
Since i'm in Australia, on Optus, there isn't a leaked DTJF3 image. So i can't just flash back to the original.
Is there a way using busybox, or an update.zip (I create and sign update.zips, Have done a little) to update the model numbers to at least look like i haven't been messing with it. Best to be safe rather than have them not honor the warranty because of a flashed update.
I ask in here as this is where the people with an intimate knowledge of the underlying code hang out.
Regards,
aRTie
Australian Stock Rom (Dump) : ............
PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE NOT A DEVELOPER, PLEASE DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS FILE.
http://rapidshare.com/files/406741229/dump.tar !!!!
not my work but taken from this forum, so mayb try a search before posting
So I guess the first silly question would be.....
how to separate out the CSC, Phone & PDA tar files from the Dump?
Or is there a way to use Odin to flash the dump.tar?
(just thought I'd ask the question before the OP does )
****************
Ok, so i was just looking at Odin, and there is a place where you can upload the dump.tar file. Is it really that simple - select the dump.tar downloaded from this thread, keep all other PDA/CSC/Modem spots empty, maybe select re-partition then flash??

Hey mate, caught in a similar situation here. The dump is not available now, do you mind uploading to another location? I know many other users waiting for this as well.
All the best with your flashing.
In the end until there is a leaked copy of the rom,we won't be able to flash it.we can customize with update.zip however we can't turn the dump into a rom.
The dump will contain the optus parts of the rom.but not the rom itself. I just figured someone may be able to help me fool the about screen into showing the wrong rom version.
At some point nandroid might get running, then we can do some interesting stuff until then, we just wait.
That's how I understand it

During inspection of your handset, the firmware check is done by the supplied tools to Optus, this will have no effect even if you change the About section on the Android OS, voiding your warranty further. I would rather advise you to wait for a month or so until 2.2 update comes up on Optus, then you can update the firmware via recovery.

the dump has a different format, it doesnt have a radio and csc file ( though you dont need it ) but you still need samsung.pit file i.e the bootloader file .. but be careful while doing that.

[Q] little help on how to flash please

hello everyone
recently downloaded the middle east version of the SGS FW i9000JPJG8 since i couldn't find the original FW i9000JXJF1 , so i looked around and prepared myself.
everything downloaded and ready for the flash
used a youtube video looking at a detailed guide to flash my sgs
i downloaded the .512 pit file but the other 3 files r missing
i notice the big FW file has 3 files starting with CODE , CSC and another CSC files
my big FW file JPJG8 has got a folder ( OJP_JG9 ) and the files in it are
zImage
param.lfs
modem.bin
factoryfs.rfs
dbdata.rfs
cache.rfs
totally diff from the files i saw in the video , where do i go from here ?
any help is much appreciatted
You need help to search not to flash. Don't try things if your not able to. You will never finish it in a working way. Video is for dummies and if you use a vid just follow these steps and USE the files they using.
Well I know for sure I won't go ahead with it until I find the right procedure.
Thanx for your reply but I did search around and well I didn't find a different way than the way posted in here which is exactly the same as the video I found. Anyways I'm still looking around, if anyone could shed some light on this Q id be very grateful.
Thanx in advanced for any help

Basically you've come across a directory of extracted filesystems.
I recommend you avoid trying to use them and rather find another Firmware to flash that comes with the pre-packaged tarball files.
You might understand what I am referring to by looking here... http://screen.pixalgames.com/23-08-2010_5400.png

Thanx for your reply sturmeh
iv looked around for any other versions of the FW even same versions from diff sites and nothing seems to be different , same files , iv tried to even look for my current FW and had no luck finding it
Pda : I9000jpjf4
Phone : I9000jxjf1
CSC : I9000jpjf4
pretty much im going thru all this hassle for some arabic support , if i can find an FW which will show me msgs in arabic and allow me to type in arabic , id be very happy. i dont need Arabic in the phones menus what so ever. just need to be able to reply when needed.
Sounds like you extracted the actual tar file. Don't. Just flash it as the pda file. You don't have to flash all 3 files.

What one click are you referring to? If you are talking about odin one click, the only thing you should be using that for is going back to stock before flashing a rom. If a rom is flashable through clockwork than you would just put it on your internal sd card and follow the instructions for flashing through Rom Manager. If it is a rom that is supposed to be flashed with odin you would have to open up the zip file you downloaded and enter the appropriate files into odin.

WELL **** I flashed a rom now im stuck on congnition rom and i cant flash another one can u help
You need to be more descriptive if you want people to figure out a solution to your specific problem. Your post amounts to "I flashed a rom, I'm having problems, vague reference to rom manager, help guys".
Here's what we need:
1. What version of Android are you trying to flash?
2. What version are you currently running?
3. What modifications have you done?
4. What is the specific error you are getting?
5. What is the EXACT process you are using to try to flash the new rom?
READ READ READ READ READ, THEN READ SOME MORE!
you obviously have not read enough. there are 2 versions of ODIN we use for our phones:
One click ODIN which is simply a prepackaged version of the regular ODIN configured with the appropriate files that ODIN needs to flash our phones with it....they are packaged up by a developer named DesignGears. not every rom is going to have a one click odin....
there is also regular ODIN which requires you to have the appropriate files associated with your rom (kernel, pit file, modem, csc file, and rom), sometimes devs will package as much of that as possible into one or 2 files to flash in ODIN
you need to spend some time learning how to use these or just use the one click and go back to stock, then leave your phone alone. seriously, freaking out on a forum is not the right way to go about getting help for your phone.
calm down and give up the info that modest_mandroid has requested. none of us magically know what the heck you are talking about when you spout out random things like help, i flashed something and now i cant do anything else

Root files when using Odin

Hi, I am trying to root my Galaxy S I9000. It is gingerbread.xxjvt 2.3.5, and I am using a tutorial to root.
Now the question is in the files the tutorial provided, there is a file named CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVT-v4.3-CWM3RFS. If I unrar it, there is a file named zlimage. Which file should I use in Odin?
Thanks for any help.
Well don't unrar it, it goes straight as it is in odin. Inside PDA, be careful not to tick re-partion !!!
Odin open and be careful not to re-partition is checked then click on the PDA and put there cf-root or kernel. I suggest if you put everything on the phone root is better kernel semaphore. good luck

Thank you and others for the help. I don't know what you mean in the second part of your post, I don't know much about kernels and stuff. At least now I'll have a rooted phone; one at a time! Roms and kernels are next.

I did not undestand the second part as well but I think he wanted to tell you that you may use the Sepahore-Kernel instead of CF-Root because it has some Modifications in it to capitalize every feature wich a rooted phone can provide you eg. Voodoo-Sound, Bln and so on.

Do you mean that instead of using this file I can use another file in the same way and have a rooted phone with extended features? If yes, does that mean cf-root file is also a kernel?
Sorry, newbie! My lack of english knowledge doesn't help as well.
Download from market sgs flash kernel app, download kernel semaphore 2.4.0 ( serch in google) save kernel on sd card in phone, go to SGS Flash |Kernel and choose kernel (semaphore saved on sdcard)-> flash kernel , than u have nwe kernel semaphore.

[Q] How to restore a .tar file downloaded from sammobile.com?

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone would happen to know how to restore a .tar file that I downloaded from sammobile.com/firmware/ . I got it in the hopes it would have a seperate PDA, CSC etc. files so I could restore using Odin put I have to admit I was stumped when I just got one .tar file. The file in question is Optus' 2.3.3 firmware and is called 'jvn_jv5_jv1.tar' if it's any help. The files inside the tar are:
-zImage
-param.lfs
-cache.rfs
-factoryfs.rfs
-boot.bin
-modem.bin
-Sbl.bin
Thanks.
Not 100% certain on this so perhaps wait for a confirmation but I think that if you only have one tar file you put it in the PDA and flash it.

+1
Can totally confirm this!!
But if you want further confirmation there are instructions on sammobile.com
It's an easier way to flash as its only one file and less people can get the files mixed up. (It still has the kernal and modem inside it)
Edit: Just check and it seems to be missing dbdata.rfs Did you miss that out. If its not there then do another download and see if it is. If not then im sure it'll be fine..
