[Q] Can't get rid of "Custom" boot screen. - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to get my device back to as close to stock as possible. I have played with Root and Wanam Exposed.
I had a weird issue with force closes and could not figure it out so I wiped the device using the factory reset option. Even after that I have FC's with the health app. (no biggie there). The odd thing is that I still have the "CUSTOM" logo on the boot screen that I cant seem to get rid of.
I did a quick search on a bone stock ROM for NC2 KK but have come up empty.
I am currently looking at the Download Screen "ODIN MODE" and the Current Binary is "Samsung Official" System Status "Official" Knox Lock reads 0x0, so I have not tripped knox either.
Kinda baffled here and I seem to be coming up empty handed on all my searches.
Any one got any ideas?

Not sure what all you need posted....
It is a 900a AT&T Note 3 running KK 4.4.2 NC2 rom.
Rooted via towel root
Tweaked a bit using Exposed Framework and Wanam.
Also jave the latest Safestrap for making nandroids.
HAVE NOT tried to do a custom ROM yet.
What else would you like?

As for now I would uninstall all my root apps, delete them then full unroot with supersu so you wouldnt see that custom boot anymore( takes a couple of reboots)

The op warned those who are still on 4.3 that if they used the ver 3 mlg with the nc2 bootloader they cannot go back to jb. But to those of us who already are locked to nc2 we could recover from a bootloop or restore to factory for warranty purposes or just want to go back to stock. Read up on that carefully very very useful if you like to play with your phone.

[Q] Help with unroot and removing "Custom" and unlocked padlock

I purchased the AT&T version of the Galaxy Note 3 a little less than a week ago and, to be honest, I'm not really keen on it. There are a number of reasons, but what it boils down to is that I just don't think I like it all that much. I've already sold my Galaxy Note 2, so I'll have to figure out what I'm going to do about a cell phone, but that's something beyond the scope of this particular posting. What I need help with is how to unroot this device. I used the Root De La Vega procedure very shortly after it came out and it worked like a charm. I noted that when the phone boots up, there is the word "Custom" and an unlocked padlock. How do I get this AT&T model of the Galaxy Note 3 back to the condition, more or less, of when I bought it about a week ago so that I won't have any issues getting the refund processed? I've heard some people requesting help with unrooting and they've been told to use the unroot in SuperUser. Will this get rid of the "Custom" wording on boot-up AND the unlocked padlock? If not, is there a way to get this back to the way it was or am I just out of luck since I only have about another week to return this device. Obviously, if I'm stuck, I'm stuck and I'll find a way to live with it. Who knows...I might actually get to liking it down the road when some of the quirks have been worked out. However, if there's a way to sort all of this out in a timely manner where there's no muss or fuss, that would be the ideal solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not super familiar with the unrooting process, but try to unroot using SuperSU and reboot a couple of times to see if it goes away. If that doesn't work then flash the original firmware with odin and that should do it. Pretty easy to do from what I understand.

Perhaps this is showing my ignorance, but since the AT&T Galaxy Note 3 has a locked bootloader (which, as of yet, has not been unlocked), would that prevent Odin from flashing a new image? If I don't need an unlocked bootloader to flash with Odin, do you know where I might find the original image that came with my phone from AT&T in a format that Odin can flash? I haven't tried the SuperSU yet since I want all my options readily available so that if one fails, I can move on to the next one.

To my understanding you can flash anything with Odin on a locked bootloader phone that is "signed". If you give me a few minutes I'll help you look for the original odin file to flash.

I really appreciate your help. Every time I've used Odin in the past has involved a phone with a non-locked bootloader (as far as I know) so this is new territory for me.

I tried the SuperSU full unroot method - didn't remove the padlock, flashed the one click - didn't remove it, and just flashed the second (for funsies) and that didn't help (probably shouldn't have expected it to).
I'm returning my note and can't get rid of the lock. Will PM Designgears I guess
Did you restart it a few times? Also a factory reset?

yes to both (restarted 5 times). since i was already so far into the root process, I added the files to the sdcards that are in the root steps, and the lock went away. Then I finished rooting.
went back and did one click again and still had the lock after rebooting 5 times. Thought about how it went away after adding the files so I skipped through the phone setup, enabled USB debugging again and added a dummy file to the sd card (a .csv I had on my desktop) and then removed it. Rebooted, and the lock was gone.
I'd use the padlock hack in Wanum and hide the root apps via Nova Launcher just to stick it to ATT and return it rooted.

Ok well here's what I did and the padlock is gone.
Factory reset on the phone
Phone rebooted and I removed the super su app using the setting in the su app.
Then flashed the one click 9 tar
phone reboots on its own after flashing, icon was still there
rebooted the phone twice and the padlock was gone
Not sure if I just got lucky or what lol

I know you have to reboot a few times to set the status somehow, iB4STiD explained it in one of his post before.

Help with root etc... need some expert advise

OK so I have this great ATT note 3. I have it rooted (mj5). I haven't done much with it because as far as I know I can't get a custom recovery yet Correct??
I am having issues with a few things and I'm a little concerned with the phone. For 1 I have a hard time starting up my phone some times. It seems to keep restarting and I have to keep taking the battery out and it will work after a few times. 2nd the volume sometimes gets messed up with things I do.
I've been rooting for maybe close to 1 year now and by no means a expert here but I've never failed doing it.
So here is my question, I would like to know if there is anything I can do now to get a custom recovery now that some time has gone by. I see a lot of things going on but it's all things I've never seen or read about before. I'm just looking to get pointed in the right direction from the point I'm at right blessed which is rooted with Mj5.
Or do I unroot and if so how?
also any of these options am I going to lose everything on my phone? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

I had rooted myself on SM-N900A on MJ5 using Kingo and also used kingo to unroot too. No issues / No Knox tripping.
Rooting
So I have the ATT N900A and have tried rooting it or at least looked into it so far but when the forums say only certain version available I never find one that actually says N900A. I have seen others, but to be honest I am freshly new to all of this and I am learning it all slowly but surely. Can I get some help any one?

Those are not normal issues to have on your phone, and I don't think they are related to the rooting; I think they are indicative of larger issues with the phone. I would unroot it so it looks stock, and assuming the problems persist, take it back to AT&T.
If unrooting fixes it, ofc, reroot and do it right this time (I don't know what method you used, or what might have gone wrong)
Do that BEFORE messing around with our poor-substitute for a custom recovery (safestrap) and custom ROM's.

Sigh - always, first thing after rooting, always freeze OTA updates, and wait to upgrade before people here say it works and there's a root available!
Since you're having suspicious issues, I would want to put on clean MJ5 firmware before continuing - get the system into a known state before continuing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715
This will erase everything on your phone.
I would hold off on rooting and first check if the issues you mentioned in the OP are fixed, and if they are, then you can chalk it up to a software problem (pin the blame on the OTA update), and follow the instructions in that thread to get root.

Borrow a friend's pc or go to a library and use Samsung Kies, but you will lose root.
This is most likely because you deleted some the system apps that came with the stock rom..... This is why I never delete them only freeze with titanium backup! This happen to me on Ml9 so I had to restore stock rom reroot put super su in survival mode and then take the update!

Kies is just going to tell you that your firmware is up to date. Either factory reset or you may have to use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715 < This is how I had to do it.
So if I am rooted and deleted the AT&T bloat apps, I can't install the KitKit update? What I unroot completely? I know that won't bring back the garbage AT&T apps back, but would I be able to OTA to kitkat then?

Wow. Anyway, I was rooted, but had Wanam installed and successfully updated to Nb4. I had the fake system status set to official. I was alwasy under the impression if it said Official you could update.
And great, because now we all have to follow a really complicated guide to restore back to MJ5 if we want kitkat.
I was rooted on mj5 no wanam or anything and my phone update to nb4
It didn't even ask.
What you probably did was delete the att update software so now it's not even looking.

I don't think being rooted affects your updating. I have read many people accidentally updating and loosing their root. If you couldn't update with root, people wouldn't freeze at&t update.
ive tried unrooting factory reset andthe only thing i can think of is that ive deleted something . i guess the lesson learned is juat freeze apps instead of deleting them

I'm experiencing the same issue, and no - since the phone thinks it's a system app, it will not let you completely uninstall it. It will however give you the option to uninstall any updates.

Has this been done? I mean re-flash a stock NC2 over NC2 with the upgraded bootloader? If so, this will definitely get rid of that pesky SU app! Also, if it can be done, what do I say to the Samsung tech nerds about why i want it flashed?
Just asking.
Sounds like you're stuck with even more useless bloat then most.
Go to your nearest Samsung kiosk at your best buy and they will redo the update and that will get rid of the superuser files and all files associated with root. I just went and I'm root anything free. How I know is I used isis and didn't get the your phone is rooted message. Good Luck. O PS you won't loose anything meaning their update don't wipe your phone back to factory. But just in case do a BACKUP.

Thanks guys for all you replies. Will try going to best buy soon to see if they can do it for me.

Going bestbuy in your current state won't work. They are only able to do a update or emergency recovery to NC2, so you will still be stuck with non-working SuperSU still under /system/app even after reflashing. Unfortunately they don't have full factory reset image for 4.4.2 NC2 yet as of 5/17/2014.
What I did to remove that is to flash leaked Kitkat MLG with NC2 bootloader (look for the thread posted by Carl) using Odin, and this will wipe everything out. Then go to Bestbuy Samsung and update to NC2. This is the only way to remove SuperSU or any junk left behind.
As a precaution I did factory reset after I got mine updated to NC2 and after installing some stuff my PlayStore dissappeared so I had to do a factory reset another time. Now I think everything is pure stock.
And you don't have to make up any excuses about why you want it reflashed. Just tell them you had it rooted and now because att MFs locked down everything so bad you couldn't even get rid of it without flashing with leaked Kitkat. Samsung guys are there to help you.
I'm never going to buy another At&t crap again.

I'm going to have to disagree with you since I was in the same boat as the OP. I went to Best Buy Samsung and they did the update from Samsung site and it wiped out all traces of root files and supersu. They first had to download the update from Samsung site and then they connected my note 3 on nc2 with superus still there. Once they finished I checked my disabled apps and superus was no longer listed. I did a complete factory restore to verify it worked and superus was nowhere to be found. Not sure what is different from AT&T update and Samsung but Samsung version completely wipes out root.

WARNING! TOWELROOT:Phone does not boot after enabling U Power Saving Mode

UPDATE2: This only seems to happen if you uninstall the Launcher system app. Mine does not seem to be affected by Xposed or other mods, and works 100% fine now in U Power Saving.
Just decided to try Ultra Power Saving mode after rooting and modding my phone yesterday. I'm not sure what exactly caused it (xposed, root, w.e) but my phone will not boot past the ATT Globe now. Just thought everyone might appreciate a heads up that they may have to factory reset after enabling this setting.
I'll update if my phone decides to boot up (letting it sit now)
UPDATE: It seems that after rooting, U power saving does have the potential to BRICK your phone. DO NOT ENABLE FOR ANY REASON AFTER ROOTING.
My gut says the culprit was uninstalling Launcher.apk (thought it was the google launcher >_>) gonna have to factory reset now.
More info dude
You might have just freaked out a noob here. Root was just achieved yesterday for the Verizon and ATT platform. Please post your hardware software state so we don't get confused here.

Same here cant get past the logo did a factory reset in recovery and still a no go. I tried to Odin back but still a no go as the files we have to return to stock are older I guess than the version I had on my phone. I am not 100% sure what caused it on my phone. Ive let mine sit for 20minutes or so and no go. took out the battery for a few hours etc no go. So now I am looking for Firmware KOT 49.G900AUCU2AND3.

Are you sure that your didn't remove or freeze the launcher? If you don't have a third party launcher installed, freezing/removing the launcher.apk will cause the phone to not boot past the logo screen.

I disagree. There are serious disk space concerns with this phone. If I am not going to use an app,and I have root, I am deleting it to recover the space it takes plus any associated files. If that breaks something, then that sucks. You can always reinstall through factory reset.
I'm fairly confident your wrong. Factory reset won't make uninstalled system apps reappear. That's why they don't let you delete them normally.
Just Odin back to stock after Odin flashes reboot into recovery and wipe all data reboot and all should be well

except where they said they tried to odin back in and no luck so try again
Suggest that someone change the title to include AFTER TOWELROOT in there. For someone like me who had the files on the phone but just didn't pull the trigger yet, it will better keep them informed.

willing to bet there's some user error involved...Odin back to stock should fix any issues.

How much you willing to bet..
You wrong if you have lock bootloader and you took update and bootloader is updated you can't odin back to previous version. We don't have current (updated) odin file for AT&T S5 yet.
Swiping from dark side of Galaxy S5.
Can anyone confirm that after unrooting with superuser it Will be safe to use ultra power saving mode?

Same with Samsung keyboard too. That's the only keyboard that works in UPS mode.

Worked for me, and so far at least one other person in my thread.
