Pretty minor, but I usually use hangouts as my primary messaging app and disable thee factory messaging app. The 4.4.4 OTA enabled it again, and the option to disable it appears to be grayed out. Anyone have any idea why this could be?

Hmm. Can on a Maxx 4.4.4. Try installing a alternate messaging app first. I use Handsent.
Yep, I've got the same issue.
As you said, incredibly minor but still nagging to have it sitting there... "hanging out" in my app drawer (pun intended).

Rooted fix only, the op is not.
Try Titanium to freeze it.

Wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I got my Nexus 4 (Yeah!), started it up, logged into my google acct, everything started downloading/restoring from google. I checked out the Messaging app and settings, and noticed a "group messages" setting. Sweet!!! But then I got a system update notification. I obviously installed it. After installing it, I used gobackup pro to restore my messaging threads. NOT THE APP, just the threads. Checking the settings again, the "group messages" setting was gone! Just gone! Not sure if it was the system update, or the thread restore, but I am perplexed. I've done 2 factory resets since, but the setting is still gone. Messaging ver. is 4.2-57622 or something like that (don't have the phone with me at the moment.) I'm guessing it had to do with the system update, and that is why it's still not there after the factory resets, but, I really have no idea. I am stock, no root, or unlocked bootloader. Stock, pure stock (the reason I bought a nexus device). Any help or related info would be greatly appreciated! I've searched everywhere, and seem to be the only one with this issue. Any screenshots of anyone else's messaging settings running that app version would help too. Thanks
You'd probably get more help if this was in the Q&A section.

Man, I'm confused. I have no idea what happened. The group part is totally omitted from mine. I've tried to reinstall the app, but can't get very far without root. Thank you for the screenshot. At least I know that the setting isn't just hidden in the Ota update.
Have you tried the reset settings to default option? Or clearing the data for the messaging app?

Yeah, done both. One thing someone just said in another thread, isit may be carrier dependent, and the OTA update hides the setting unless your carrier supports it. Being as I have only played with the phone on wifi just to make sure I am happy with it and don't want to return it,(as it is a christmas present ) I'm starting to wonder if that is my problem. I have no sim installed, so the settings may be hidden until you pop a sim in and the phone recognizes that your carrier supports it.
So I'm running CM9 4.0.4 ICS Liberty on my HTC Aria. I seem to have an issue where when I get MMS I get no notification because it hasn't downloaded the message. I keep my data off and therefore the message just sits as unread but I don't hear a sound nor will it show in my notification bar. Can I just replace my current MMS apk with a stock version that hopefully will auto download my MMS without me needing to go turn on my data. When I was running stock it was easily done without anything on my part.

So you are looking for an app that will turn your data on automatically, download the message, then turn it back off? I am not sure "stock apk" will do that any better than the stock CM9 app? Do you have Auto-retrieve and enabled in the Message app settings?

Correct. I do have auto retrieve enabled. I'm trying to get the functionality I had prior to rooting my phone. Since I was on froyo I don't really know if this was no longer the norm with ICS. My messaging app won't turn on my data at all I need to turn it on to download or send a picture. With out data on it just is continuously sending or it won't download.

OK, I get where you are going with this... I think this is generally a "stock" ROM thing, I don't know of any aftermarket ROMs that do this. Generally turning on mobile data automatically is considered a bad thing but at the same time the messaging app should handle it more elegantly. Have you tried Textra or Handcent or possibly turning auto-retrieve off?

I haven't tried textra yet but I did try handcent. Didn't really like the app and it sent images as a link instead of attachments. The only app work around I've found is tasker and enable data by SMS. Both are just workarounds. Maybe I'll just look for a different ROM.
I just updating to 4.4.3 and no matter what SMS app I use when I go into it it slows to a crawl to the point my phone isnt even responding. Anyone else seeing these issues?

Some users have reported similar issues when they had DISABLED the stock SMS app before the update, and did not "re-enable" it before taking the OTA.
Assuming you had disabled the stock SMS app, you should be able to fix it by reseting all app preferences.
Settings > Apps
Click the menu button (3 dots), and click "Reset app preferences"

You can try. If you do, and the problems start again, just "reset app preferences" again, and don't disable that time.

This fixed it for me as well.
I don't know if anyone else is seeing this, or if it is just me. Prior to 4.4.4, I could remove Mms.apk/odex and have no issues. I didn't care as I used Hangouts for SMS/MMS, so I wanted it gone to clean up the app drawer. On 4.4.4, if I remove Mms.apk/odex, Hangouts will FC if I try to send a SMS/MMS message. It is still fine for a hangouts message though. Restore the app, and no problems. Is anyone else seeing this? I'd like to get rid of the app, but it appears I may not be able too.
Try just freezing it with titanium backup?
But if same issue, then perhaps hangouts now relies on it. Just hide it from app drawer if your launcher supports it...or else you'll have to live with it.

I read reports of this same exact thing happening on 4.4.2 also. KJ's suggestion was the solution for those users as well. I'm curious why you didn't experience the issue on 4.4.2 though, when others did...
Not sure why it worked on 4.4.2, or why it isn't working on 4.4.4. If I can't remove it, then I'll just hack the APK to get rid of it from the launcher menu, but leave it installed. Annoying, but it may be the only way around it as I don't feel like installing TiBu just to freeze the app.
And, it is now "fixed" :good: Replace the Mms.apk/Mms.odex with the one that is attached, and it will keep the app on the phone, but out of the app drawer. I deodexed the file, removed the launcher property from the AndroidManifest and then resigned the app. Once you put it in place, reboot and you'll be good to go. You may need to set the permissions on the file, if you do, you want 0644. Enjoy.
I also noticed that on 4.4.4 you can't disable MMS like you could in 4.4.2 I'm not sure why they thought that it would need to be kept. It could be a thing to do with making sure that people at least have Motorola's MMS on their phone. Maybe it is for Motorola Connect reasons.
I've had my VZW Moto X for a week now and I'm having trouble with the Hangouts app. Every so often when I bring up Hangouts to read a new message, it'll pop up for a brief moment then kick me back out to my homescreen. Then will continue to do so every time I try to open the app back up until I restart my phone. I've tried clearing cache, app data, uninstalling updates, but nothing fixes it without a reboot... at least not consistently. And to top it all off... because Hangouts came preinstalled, I can't completely uninstall it to try a fresh install. This has happened at least once every other day since I've gotten this phone. I was running Dalvik until yesterday when i switched to ART. Happens using both. I used Hangouts on my 2013 Moto X without ever an issue. Any suggestions?
Strange. I had hangouts fc on me once. Today actually. But it was only once and worked fine afterwards. I refuse to update to the new hangouts. They ruined it
I had the same issue for the first day or two, then the force closing stopped.
Same here but rebooting clears it up

reboot
Had this issue like 3 or 4 times on VZW as well. Only way to open the app to send a text was to reboot, very annoying...latest verzion of hangouts.
Still having this issue. Really annoying.

So I found a quicker fix than restarting the phone. If Hangouts force closes, I open the stock android messaging app for just a moment. Then, once I've backed out of it, Hangouts magically works again without a reboot. Don't know why it works... but it does... at least on my device.
I really wish I could figure out what is causing this issue... It happens at least once a day and nothing seems to be a fix that works every time.
It seems to me that every time Hangouts force closes initially, I get a notification from the Play Store for an app update. Also, when it force closes, usually Messaging will start force closing as well if I try to open it. So incredibly frustrating...

Agree fully. I have not been able to associate it with anything but it happens daily. Drives me insane.
I'm tempted to do a factory reset, but I'm afraid I'll go through all the trouble to reset everything and it'll continue to happen. Are you using the stock launcher or something else?

I'm using the Google Experience Launcher. The fact that more people aren't complaining about it leads me to believe it must be some weird conflict between a couple apps/Google services.

Yeah I need to try and remember to get a log next time I see it.
It just happened again! I really think it's somehow tied to Play Store Update notifications. Any time I'm actively using Hangouts and it crashes, I will then immediately get a notification that I have one or more updates available in the Play Store. How could these two be connected and what can I do to sever this connection? I sideloaded the updated version of the Play Store... maybe uninstall updates?

Yeah and I was finally able to do some digging. It's actually tied into contacts somehow, which I never had noticed before. When hangouts is auto-closing so will people, phone, and generating a new text message. Basically anything looking for contacts. Still not sure why though.
I think that for some reason it's tied to Play Store notifications. I've also had Hangouts crash while sending a MMS picture message. Don't know if these crash instances are related.

It's not tied to Play Store. I have no updates pending and I'm looking at the logcat.
Just go to app info and clear the data
It should work on most cases
