Name: Board Express
We‘ve developed a new software for Windows Phone 7: Board Express for Tapatalk. This application enables you to use forums in the Internet directly on your WP7 device! Tapatalk is already well known on Android and iPhone and is very popular.
Xda-developers have their own rebranding Tapatalk client, the xda-develpers App for Android.
Our WP7 client allows you to read and write in forums on the go, using a special User Interface, adapted for Windows Phone 7. It has also been optimized for causing only little traffic and be easy to read. You may also write posts and open new threads, subscribe to topics and search. Furthermore, it can display unread threads or topics in your own themes, show private messages or send them and of course quote, edit, delete and report posts, and much more.

Hi
The app looks really good. Nice work. Is there the "go to first unread post"-feature integrated as in the android version of Tapatalk?
No, sadly this function is not integrated in the first version. We worked hard on it but this is not really easy to implement. This feature will make it's way to version 1.1 which will also be in the Marketplace very soon
Except from this feature, we implemented almost every function from Tapatalk into our Board Express app.
I can't find board express on the marketplace.
Is it not available to some regions? I'm in Ireland.
Thanks
Sadly, at the moment Board Express is not available in the WP7 Marketplace, because we have problems with the Microsoft Certification Test..
We submitted the App twice now, and on every submission, they find a new error which is kind of disappointing. Why don't they find all the errors on the first time so you don't have to wait seven more days?
But we keep going and we hope, that Board Express will be available soon

Bummer, hopefully we'll see it soon, and hopefully xda will purchase a branded version of the app for the rest of us to use!

Lots of developers seem to be very disappointed because of this approval process
We'll send it in again tomorrow..
Would be great if xda-developers would have interest in a branding version.

You can access xda-developers with the standard Board Express App The advantage is, that with Board Express you can access over 8'000 other forums.
I see that vbulletin support is listed, but does it support the heavily modified Something Awful forums which is based on an very old version of vbulletin ?
It is a pay site and I would happily buy you a login if it meant support could be added.

At the moment, "Someting Awful" is not supported. Has the forum owner installed the Tapatalk Plugin? It's completely free. Please ask him to install Tapatalk and I'm confident, that Board Express will support "Something Awful" afterwards.

Sadly not - we, like many others, have big problems with the certification for the Windows Phone Marketplace.. We're working on it hard, but it seems that on every submission, Microsoft finds some new errors, some of them are not even listed in their documents..
It'd be nice if some of you guys working on it take a really hard look at the Metro design specs. While the application idea is nice, it looks out of place. Make more use of different font sizes, proper padding and make use of the accent and ancillary colors, ditch as much of the lines as possible.

This won't happen. Matter of fact is, even tho the page bottom still says VBulletin, it's so heavily modified and parts rewritten, it's almost its own forum software.
We'll have a look into the design, as soon as the App is being published! First priority is to get the App in the Marketplace

Not such a bad thing. I mean If I downloaded your app and it crashed/hung/froze/restarted/etc I would write the app of as crap and *maybe* never use it again. Look on the bright side of the situation

Board Express runs very smoothly, no crashes, no hungs, no freezes, no restarts... since the first version, we submittet to the Marketplace (This was never a reason, why we did not get approved). Microsoft does not really test the above things.. A lot of Apps in the Marketplace are very laggy.. Microsoft tests other things, which sometimes are ridiculous.
One reason, why they did not approve our app, was the translation of "favorites" (Am) - we used "favourites" (Br.) instead. Microsoft told us, that "favourites" is german, which is 100% wrong ("Favoriten" is german), and that we need to translate everything, including "favourites". (They thought that we missed to translate "favourites")
Another reason was: We submitted a branded version for PocketPC.ch. PocketPC.ch is a Windows Phone 7 and Android Community, this was mentioned in the app description. "Android" is a bad word for Microsoft, so we didn't get approved.
Ridiculous is also, that Microsoft did not note every reason why we did not get approved on the first test, they found one new reason why we do not get approved on every submission. And on every submission, you have to wait 3-7 days until Microsoft checks your App again. And after every check, after you got the result, that your App has not been approved, you have to wait 1-3 days on the reasons, why your App did not get approved.
But good news: Today, the branded Client of PocketPC.ch got approved and we resubmitted the two Board Express versions and we hope that we get approved this time
Finally, Board Express Pro got approved
Here's the link: Board Express Pro (Works only with IE). At the moment, Board Express Pro is not yet indexed in the Marketplace, this will happen in the next 24 hours.
We hope, that Board Express gets approved soon

Thanks a lot for searching for Bugs!
We'll publish an update, in which you can choose to remove or edit the signature, soon. That was already on our list

update: PocketPermissions 2.0 has been released!
All newly rebuilt with Honeycomb (tablet), and ICS optimization
New: Show your list of apps and how many permissions they request
New: Automatic search suggestions for permissions
New: Sort by number of permissions requested, name, risk, and more
New: Details screen for apps, listing permissions and other useful info
New: Multi-pane layout for tablets
Reorganized home screen for easier navigation
Hey all,
Many of you have read my guide on permissions and security. (Though this is more for beginners than some of the more seasoned XDA vets )
And, thanks to some of the great feedback and support on this and other Android related forums, I decided to make an app version.
Because, well, where better to read about permissions for your phone, than on your phone?
So who is it for?
Well, lots of us are watching as our less tech-savvy friends grab new Android phones and would like to set them up with some good habits.
It's my hope that this will help people feel more secure and informed and not feel like they've been tossed into the wild west or have to rely soley on anti-virus. The idea is that you can set them up with this app, or keep it as a quick reference for yourself.

Pleasing interface and valuable information. Thanks.
Looks interesting. Any plans to add functionality to disable or block permissions on an app by app basis?
Thanks for the kind words guys, and sorry for the delay in getting back to this thread.
At this time there aren't any plans for blocking permissions, as that is a much more serious undertaking and requires root and modifying the OS itself and/or decompiing and recompiling the apps you want to change.
There are at least two apps out there that do try to block permissions but how effective they are I can't say.
My approach is more to educate users rather than to change the OS/Apps.
Edit:
Also, I just uploaded 1.0.4
- Better support for tablet-sized devices
- Many typo fixes
- Some editing for clarity
1.0.5 and 1.0.6 have are out, and the app just got accepted at the Amazon AppStore
http://www.amazon.com/gp/mas/dl/android?p=com.alostpacket.pocketpermissions
Changelog:
-New feature: after searching by permission, you can click on an app to be taken to its appilcation settings page. (Only tested on Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 - please let me know if you have any trouble with this feature!)
-Updated "make phone calls" permission
-Added better support for tablet-sized screens
-Many typo fixes and some editing for clarity
Updated to v1.1
What's new:
-Font size option in preferences
-Show all permissions option in preferences
-Show tech details about each permission, to see the official developer documentation about a permission
-Color coded permission list to show importance
-Filter out system apps option in preferences
-More consistent font styles/some graphics tweaks
Not bad, but I prefer this since its free and can disable/block permissions.

That's cool, and that's your choice of course. But my goal is to educate users rather than to modify other apps. So both these apps fill a different need and I think compliment each other.
Stericson's app is for advanced and rooted users, and can potentially break other apps or even your phone (as you can see in the reviews). Dont get me wrong, Stericson's a great guy and fatastic dev, but his approach and mine are fundamentally different.
My app is to help people learn about their phone and Android in general, as well as elighten them as to what the apps are asking for. I think people should be more aware of what the ramifications of permissions are, and why they shouldn't download apps when permissions exceed what's required.
Also, if you would like the free guide, you can always visit my website -- it includes a printer friendly version and downloadable PDF of this guide. The text of my guides is released under the Creative commons license. I have been writing and updating this guide for almost 2 years now. It has always been for free, and it's been read over 100k times.
So I ask for people to pay $0.99 if they would like extra features in an app and to have the guide specially formatted for a phone.
As a dev I need to eat and pay rent just like anyone else. I cant make everything free. But nearly half of my work is free. So please respect that fact.

Finally, I would appreciate if you would kindly not promote other apps in my announcement thread. Thank you.
So alp can you give me a laymen explaination of what exactly your app does and why a noob and/or a experienced user would find this app useful?

Sure and thanks for a constructive question
The basic idea is that it contains a plain-english guide on all the basics of security a new user should know. The text of the guide is the same as my free guide on the web which has been read over 100,000 times with hundreds of messages, emails, and posts of people thanking me for the effort.
(Incidentally the guide is released under the creative commons license and if it were printed to a book it would be roughly 25 pages of text. It was something that I have been working on and updating from time to time over the past two years -- since right when the original Droid came out).
In the app however, the guide is formatted nicely for a phone or tablet -- you can even change the font size for easier reading.
The content of the guide is written to teach about the Android community, how to check permissions, location tracking, privacy and more. But most of all, it teaches people how to understand these things in the CONTEXT of what they are doing with their phone and Android specifically. Location tracking can sound very scary or very useful, depending on what context it is being used in and for.
It also gives plain-english descriptions of each of the most common and important permissions, and color codes them based on how dangerous they are. The explanations that are given in the Market have gotten much better over the past year, but some are still very technical or vague, and dont help users understand why an app would want a permission.
Take the "Read Contacts" permission for example. The Android Market unhelpfully explains it like so:
Allows an application to read all of the contact (address) data stored on your device. Malicious applications can use this to send your data to other people.
Click to collapse
That sounds pretty scary and doesn't really give a user any idea why an app might request it.
My guide tries to explain further that many social apps, SMS replacement apps, social games, and more, might want this permission just to help you "invite a friend" and help provide typing suggestions for you.
So, as you can see, the intended audience is for new users who aren't yet knowledgeable in the context of Android and smartphones.
For tech savvy people, it can also be a quick reference, or something they can give to their friends who are less tech savvy.
I figured a lot of us have introduced our friends to Android with great enthusiasm. but I wouldn't want to toss my friend out into the wild west without teaching them what to do first.
So basically the idea was, where better to learn about the security of your phone, than on your phone?
Additionally the app offers:
- The ability to search for a permission
- A full list of any apps using that permission
- An option to filter system apps
- An option to view the complete technical permission list, which includes, uncommon, unused, and system-only permission
- The ability to see the developer documentation of each permission
Hope that covers it all
Cheers,
-alp
I've cleaned the thread of the childish arguing. Please keep the discussion on topic, that is, about the app being promoted by the OP. If you don't like it, how about just saying what you think would improve it.

Thats for the taking to time to educate me! AWESOME answer, it makes much more sense now. I consider myself an educated/experienced user but I can totally see how this would benefit me as well. I mean really, there are times when, even though i think i know what a permission is, that I have NO idea why a certain app needs a certain permission. I see this helping tremendously.
Thanks for all the hard work ALP!!
PLease take note
Gents,
You will notice that this thread has now been cleaned, please keep posts on topic, respectful and constructive.

Thank you.
So this app actually will tell me out of ALL the apps i have installed which one uses a certain permission? Then gives me a 'most likely' reason it needs said permission?

Yep. There is also a long guide explaining permissions and security for novice users.
Many (most all) on XDA aren't novice users of course, but I posted it here just in case. Certainly many of us have friends and relatives we probably converted to Android that could benefit from the guide. That's my hope anyways.
Anywho, Just want to post a few updates.
Because of this guide, I got quoted in Atlanta Journal Constitution on Tues.
The article was on privacy & security for mobile apps.
The reporter had read my security guide online somewhere and emailed me asking for an interview. So we chatted last Friday and I explained Android Permissions to her for about 20 mins heh.
Edit: Link
https://www.ajc.com/business/the-downside-to-mobile-1215319.html
Mobile security experts said there are a couple of things users can do to protect themselves. Patrick Cousins, an application developer and blogger, said the most important thing is to vet the applications, read the reviews and check out user comments, he said.
“It’s all about context. It’s OK to give Internet access to some applications if you can see a valid use for it,” Cousins said. “If I download a game of checkers and it wants access to all my contacts, that wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense in context. It doesn’t need to read contacts for me to play checkers.”

This may be old news for some but frequently new for me and others. Thankfully there are a few leaked images and content but till now, not everyone's certain about the update but many things are confirmed. As you can see below there is an image for a new Google Dialer which supposedly brings in colour. Not a huge change but its far from being plain and blant. Perhaps it'll pack in some extra built in features?

@vin4yak well doesn't that suck. Just letting everyone know, didn't actually think there was a thread. Plus some sites say the update is getting released as of today?

What sites?
Take a look at this guys - http://bgr.com/2014/04/14/sprint-nexus-5-android-4-4-3-kitkat-update/ I'm not sure if its true but I wouldnt expect the update to roll out straight away.
The publish date was on 14th so I highly doubt it was legitimate. And according to a couple of other articles on the site the update launches in a few weeks. So I don't know which to go with.

It's dated 14/4. The sprint news wasn't accurate..

There are no sources I think he's trolling or really can't read dates of articles.

^ I did update my post ? Sorry about that, just realized lol. Anyways this is probably old news for a few but hopefully it doesn't get closed or even if it does the first post contains some info and aspects that people would see in the new update.

It's more like.. "new news for a few".. The other thread had over 2-3 lakh views with 750+ comments and it was a stickie thread and the images and the features you've listed in the OP is also old news which was released a long time ago.. :silly:
Anyways, I guess it was an honest mistake.. Peace! :cyclops:
I guess so ahahah, at least new news to me, I guess I'm a bit slow ?

In addition to the date being old, the list of fixes seems a bit strange. First it says there's a fix for random reboot. I feel like that's incredibly generic. Also, isn't the power management wakelock just an umbrella term for almost all wake locks? Not sure how they would be able to "fix" that. I'm new to all this thought so I could be wrong.

This is a post i wrote on April 10th, i still stand by it, i find it unlikely that we will get anything official before I/O.
As the earlier 4.4.3 Thread got closed for too much off-topic, I would close this thread straight away. But let's see If you guys can stay on topic this time. Thread stays open for now, Do not drag our attention on this thread or else we would have to close this one too
STRAIGHT FIRE!!!!!
I saw a commercial last night when my KINGS were cooking up some Duck about Sprint's exclusive Tri-Band network. I happen to fall into that category of Sprint users who will benefit from the additional bands. Since the advertising is starting to roll, maybe the update isn't too far off either.
There were 'tumbleweeds' blowing through the other 4.4.3 post, almost completely dead. Yet it was closed down for an imaginary torrent of off topic posts.
So might as well close this one down as well.

Or try to keep this thread on topic, since I liked going to the old one to read up on new 4.4.3 rumors.
Google voice voIP service in being shut down in the upcoming weeks. Is it possible we may see a 4.4.3 update released along side? Or will they make us wait until IO in June? If that happens, will 4.4.3 just become 4.5, or do 4.5 rumors not really exist, and it's actually 5.0 rumors which will most likely occur with the next nexus phone release.

Good God...that screenshot the op put up of the"new" dialer is ugly as hell. The one we currently have looks wayyyyyy better.

I'm not sure why people keep bringing up May 15th as the cutoff date for voip on GV as to when some big release will happen. Nothing magical is going to happen on that day. I wouldn't expect Google to merge GV into Hangouts until I/O at the earliest. And even then, it is not a given that it will include VOIP.
Anyone else frustrated that new ROMs are being posted without any screenshots or other information guide-lined by moderators?
For the sake of my phone and it's integrity, I have to read through the posts to make sure of it's compatibility sometimes and hope someone posts a screenshot for bug reporting or showing off just so I can see the theme of the ROM. This stuff was rampant in a lot of older phone sub-forums and I never knew what I was getting into. Most of the time, I was surprised by ugly skins and well-known bugs that weren't posted in the original post! infuriating!
... Moderators, please re-enforce your own guidelines/rules.
Before you post, please understand that I do know a lot of developers have followed most the guidelines accordingly, and I appreciate that just as much as everyone else here who likes organization and concise information.
However, I'd like to make an example out of the specific post for Purity Rom's thread.
Looks perfect, right? ... From what I hear and read, it's perfect. I can't wait to flash this ROM sometime this week when I get the time. One problem though... There's no picture showing it off. What I do know is that it's AOSP, which typically means it's a form of Stock Android.... But I didn't know that it contained a full KitKat Black/White theme instead of Google's Holo Blue leftovers.
I'm not upset with this, I welcome it with open arms! But there's no picture to show that off or information in the post disclosing this change! Why??
... Should I mention Team EOS? or SlimKat's outdated Jelly Bean presentation picture? There's no information to take in besides the functionality.
Side note: I'm not against ROM functionality over presentation. I'd just like to know what I'm jumping into before I flash a ROM.
Also: Thank you, Paranoid Android, for the beautiful and informative photos of your ROM. Truly appreciative presentation.
I agree with you. Also, to others, please don't post stuff like "just be grateful" or "they're already giving you free stuff so why complain". This is not about what the dev has done but it's about the xda-developers forum; there are rules and/or guidelines to follow.
While I do agree, as I've seen threads started where the OP is essentially just the standard disclaimer + some credits & download links, nothing more... I don't see the need to start a new thread about it. Mods do have their hands full at times on these forums and they still have lives outside the internet. They can't always be checking every single thread making sure every guideline is met. There's a report button for a reason. Instead of publicly calling out Purity, EOS & Slim, you could just have easily PM'ed either the thread maintainers, a moderator, or simply reported it using the report button. That's literally why it's there.
The upsetting practice is that some (if not the majority) don't include changelogs in the OP, instead you have to go through external websites and links, sometimes it becomes quite an adventure to be able to read up what's new.
Now, i can understand that practice for download links (even though that's against the rules too) , but you know, ads and stuff, paying the hosts etc.. but at least copy-paste the changelog to your OP on XDA.
Good point. The most important thing is the FAQ section. It's a must for every ROMd. A newbie tends to read the OP and then download the ROM. He doesn't have time to search the entired thread for bugs. And guess what happens after he reports the problem in the thread, everyone starts blaming him that this has been discussed n number of times already. Why don't you search before posting. If the FAQ section clearly describes the problems and solutions, then it would benefit not only to newbies, but to that particular thread too. No more of unnecessary discussion.
This is the single most ridiculous and simultaneously stupid, not to mention irrelevant complaint I've ever heard. This is a Nexus device, which means it has holo accents or they're holo white. But it remains KitKat, and screenshots of the exact same UI we're currently looking at is not only redundant but unnecessary. Unless the ROM is themed drastically (ie LiquidBlood) a simple "stock holo" or "holo white" in the description/features is sufficient. You're worse than a fat person suing McDonalds for making them fat. Seriously. Bugs? Search button.

OP, just report threads in question. Problem solved.

I'm no stranger to the search button. There are some things that never get fixed and should be posted either in the original post or the FAQs page, and sometimes this never gets done, buddy.
If I don't voice my concerns or opinions, how do I expect to learn or grow with everyone else?
Why must you be, not only so oppressive, but insulting? I apologize if my original post offended or triggered you, but from little you know of me, you appear to take me for knowing close to nothing about how forums work.
You're better than this and I hope you realize how terribly you reacted.

They are merely "suggested guidelines". They are NOT something we ever have or ever will enforce. The devs can structure a thread however they please. Screenshots are usually pointless anyway, as ROMs all look basically the same, except for any custom theming.
I'm not sure what else you seem to think should be spoon fed to users, but as long as the basics are listed, I really don't see the issue. if you really need to know what it looks like, ask someone in the thread to post a screenshot for you. Or just download it and try it for yourself
One of these days the attitude and lack of people skills here will be xda's downfall.

Too right you are. I hadn't had my coffee yet and clearly didn't use my brain, and passed judgement far too quickly. I should have considered my response and been constructive instead of offensive.
You have my apologies, sir.
Its lovely when users put their ego aside and act humanly.
About the OP, I also enjoy seeing some screenshots about the customisations or themings devs implement on their ROMs. While I agree there are more important things like known bugs, reported bugs (so users don't have to browse 1000 pages) and whatever information is necessary, seeing is believing and a picture is worth a thousand words. So in my opinion, not a necessity but would be nice .

The thing is, 90% of people don't even read the OP and look ONLY for download links. Nor are they any sort of developer. Lol.

those are guidlines, NOT how your post is supposed to look. its a suggestion. if you are upset about not seeing a screenshot, flash the rom, take a screenshot, and post it.
IMO every thread must contain faq section with solutions to various rom bugs and screenshots. Most of the people will be benefited from that. In that way, the thread will be clean.

Do you follow the development threads? If you did, you would know that bugs get squashed all the time when they're being reported in the nightlies.. There's really no point in keeping on updating the OP of the development thread when a bug is found as it will most likely be squashed in the next nightly/weekly.
Coming to the screenshots part, each and every rom out here have the same look and feel. It's the features which differ which I think is included in most of the dev thread's OP afaik. Only if the developer has themed his rom differently, then Yes, a screenshot would do good. But if you want one, you can just ask in that thread particular thread. I'm sure people will be willing to share a SS with you if you ask them nicely!
Devs are required to post one thing only (besides the ROM): kernel source. Everything else is optional. I try my best to provide as much useful info as possible, but not everyone does. That is their choice.
If you see a dev posting download links to an external website with ads, report it. That is not allowed.
There is a very simple solution to your concerns OP:
If you don't like what the dev provides (whether it be the ROM or information about the ROM), don't flash the ROM, click the thanks button, or make a donation.
