LCD and AMOLED? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone here know if Nokia will be going in the direction of LCD or AMOLED or continue to put out both? I prefer the IPS LCD but haven't found a Windows Phone that is 5 plus inches that is LCD.
Any advice would be great. I'm so very very tired of Android. Android phones are so depressing to me. I'm glad that MSoft is continuing to expand into the mobile realm as they are a professional company that puts out professional complete products. Its always better to pay a little than to get something for free, because nothing is really for free.
I had the Nokia 900 a year ago but it was not being updated past 7.8 so now here I am again doing my research before buying.

Well, the Lumia 1520 is 6 inches and uses an IPS LCD if I recall correctly.

the lumia 1320 and 1520 are wonderful phones!
i have the 1320 and though it has midrange specs its really good and lasts around 2 days easily
Pros of 1320: 1.really good speed
2.doesn't lag
cons: 1.low end low spec camera
2. less pixel density ( you can't see any pixels unless you really strain )
Lumia 1520 is their flagship device with quad core 2.3 ghz snap dragon 800
2 gb ram and a 20 M.P carl zeiss lens camera
huge variation in PRICE
but if you dont take many photos
lumia 1320 is totally worth it

Yes, Lumia 1320 and 1520 have a IPS LCD sceen at 6 inches.

Well, personally, I have been using Lumia 920 for a year and a half, then it suddenly just died on me. The screen froze, then when I did a soft reset, it was like snow on the screen (like a TV without any programe, but the image was still). The phone itself was working though, I could receive calls and everything else, but the screen was black. Now I bought myself a Lumia 930, and although this is the best screen I have saw yet, the IPS LCD of the Lumia 920 was better for my eyes, then this AMOLED, after 30-40 mins in total dark my eyes stars to hurt. That wasn't the situation with IPS LCD.

Lumia 820 or HTC 8X?

I have a budget of 20k rs.(around that much) and I can afford a Lumia 820 right now. But if I wait for another month or two I MIGHT find the 8X on sale in my budget. Now, question is, which one should I get? The 820 has me going for it except for the screen resolution. Can anyone help?
Wait 2 months for the HTC 8X!
Get the L820.
It is superior in every way save display.

I have both. I much prefer the L820. Even though the display is not as high of resolution as the 8X, It still looks better to me. The super black screen (whatever nokia calls it) looks brilliant.
In my eye, the only thing the 8X has over the L820 is it's weight. 820 is quite a bit heavier. The 8X feels about like the Iphone5.

820 is superior in every way.
Thanks for the response... 720 has a Corning Gorilla Glass but 820 doesn't.. Do you think there is a high risk of screen damage when compared to 720.

I can compare my old Lumia 800 (*which I'm sure has gorilla glass) to my 820 & not sure if it's to do with the curved screen but the 800 got a few scratches on the screen however my 820 doesn't have any marks at all with no change in how it's used or stored so for me it makes no difference.
Just to add I don't use screen protectors or cases.
*edit - yes the 800 does have corning gorilla glass.
Paul Thurrott gave his first impressions of the 720 a week ago. Link here.
I went with 720. I don't play anything with my phone.
720 has superior screen. (Touch even with gloves on)
720 even though it has lower MP camera has a lot better image quality and video quality.
720 is a lot smaller in hand. (same size display)

Thank you all for the suggestions.. I bought the Lumia 820 yesterday. Hope I have made the right decision.
Can someone suggest me a good brand of Case and Scratch guard for the phone?

Lumia 820 has super sensitive touch screen too.
Lumia 820 has 1080p video recording, as opposed to 720p on lumia 720.
Photo and video compare on GSMArena is hardly ever accurate.
As i said, lumia 820 is superior in every single way.
Lumia 720 have ONLY 512 MB RAM !!!!!!!! With this value of RAM you can't install many applications and games.
Lumia 820 have 1GB RAM
L820 is better.
Both of those phones are totally awesome!! (I tried both) I liked the design of the 720 but the more features on the 820, I cant really tell a lot of difference between both, the 820 has the same screen size of the 720 (4.3 inches), but the 820 is a bit chunkier than the 720, the 720 has more of a tall-thin design,
At the end, its all up to you!

If you want a windows phone then Nokia Lumia 820 is a brilliant choice.
It comes with new Windows 8 OS There's Facebook, Twitter, Xbox, Office and Skype built in. There's also the world's best maps, and Nokia Music for completely free and unlimited music mixes. The home screen makes it really easy to organize all your favorite people, apps and information, and there is plenty of apps to download from Windows Phone Store.
This phone is also support 4g. It has Dual core 1.5 ghz processor for fast performance. It has a 8MP camera also has secondary VGA camera, 4.3" screen and 8GB of storage with expandable memory and also have 1 GB RAM.
Hope this helps!
@rahul.kapoor: Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are not the same thing! Lumia 820 comes with WP8, not Win8. Microsoft's branding is stupid enough, but please don't spread confusion.

I am also in favour of the 820, because of the tech specifications (only the display is not hd). I've got one since december 2012 and Im very lucky with it.

My impression about Lumia 720
I purchased Nokia Lumia 720 a week ago. I had HTC 7 Trophy which was great but unfortunately the HTC help center was more than awful.
When I come to Nokia 720, I found a whole new experience with dozens of Nokia apps like Music, storage check and even free mail. The performance is quite good. The battery life is about 2 days with WiFi and some calls. Meanwhile, the touch is quite responsive.
My 521 is only 512 megs of ram, but I can run a ton of apps just fine.

820 is a better choice because of:
- Better performance (higher CPU, highrt Ram)
- Better display despite the same res. and screen size. You can hand-on both of them to verify.
- You can change the battery cover by your way, your phone will always new.
- Better support! Amber for 820 come earlier than 720 and in future too.
- Both of them have the similar design.
About case and screen protector:
- You do not need case for Lumia 820 because polycarbonate is very good, anti scratch. Let use wireless charging cover to protect camera area.
- Let choose Rinco brand for screen protector.

[Q] Frightened Old Guy in need of upgrade to WP 8

Firstly I am getting older, thus I just lack the knowledge you younger smarter folk have. So I would like to know what my options are when you see my needs.
I would like a larger screen, as the phone I have now is just too small 3.7" on my HTC Radar. Due to age and other I am starting to loose my sight, so I think a 5 or 6 inch screen would fit my needs. I also think I read somewhere that with WP8 and it's update to GDR3 there are added settings for someone who has poor eyes. I have looked at a Galaxy Note 2, but I just do not like Android.
I always buy my phones outright, as I never lock into a plan, and I prefer to run pay as you go. Now from everything I can find online as of yet no Mobile companies here in Canada have said they will carry the new Nokia phones ( correct me if I am wrong), so I guess I will have to buy unlocked. But which site would be best....that ships to Canada.
Lastly I am through Wind Mobile here in Canada on a $40/month Unlimited prepay plan that I love!! So What phone will work with the network I am on???
Do I have any hope of ending up with a phone that will fit me, or will I have to change to a Note 2 or 3 ???
The largest-screen WP8 device that I *know* is available right now is the Samsung ATIV S, at 4.8" with a 1280x720 display. As you mentioned, yes, there are settings to scale up text size and such. I bought mine from Amazon (it was intended for TELUS but SIM-unlocked from the factory with no external branding). There are other sites, such as Expansys, which are also known for offering international shipping on phones.
Nokia has announced two new phones with huge screens, the Lumia 1520 (http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia1520) which has a 6" screen and 1920x1080 resolution (but will run a high price), and the Lumia 1320 (http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia1320) which has the same 6" screen but at "only" 1280x720. The 1320 is a mid-range (in features and price) alternative, though its specs are still respectable; 1GB of RAM (enough for all WP8 apps), 8GB internal storage + microSD (cramped but you can put all your photos and such on the card), dual-core CPU but clocked at 1.7GHz. The camera is a low-ish end 5MPixels, but you get the Nokia photo apps and the optics are probably better than most other comparably mid-range phones will have, and it does have a (VGA-res only) front-facing camera too.
As for where to buy it... I'm just going to recommend doing some searching online. There will be options, if not yet, then soon.

Many many Thanks GoodDay !!!
I would have held out for the 1520 or the 1320, but as I saw online they will not work on Wind. So I ended up getting a Nokia 1020.
So I have gone from WP7.8 to 8 and a 3.7" screen to 4.5" with the text size pushed up. So far it looks as if this will fit my needs. As there is still room on the slide bar to make the text even bigger as my sight goes from bad to worse. :fingers-crossed:

Confused between Lumia 625 and Lumia 630

Hello guys.. Hope this is the right thread...
I have decided to buy my first BUDGET windows phone after watching the previews of windows 8.1 ( rumored to be released in June, 2014)..
So as a budget device i have funneled out 2 device of my choice.. Lumia 630 (comes with 8.1) and lumia 625(upgradable to 8.1???)...
Things i dont like about lumia 625 is its screen quality ( based on youtube reviews) and no on screen nav bar (630 will get one)....apart from this this is a perfect choice due to its front cam and flash...
things i dont like about 630 is that it doesnt have a front facing camera and flash.. But the screen quality seems to be better than 630.. and the on screen nav bar and most importantly the quad cores...
i get it that all cant be acquired at the same time in a BUDGET device...
So i have finally decided to buy one on the basis of the CPU... 625 has a dual core and 630 will get a quad core..
So, will there be a HUGE performance difference between these two due to the extra pair of cores on 630??
Will buying 625 be a good investment in spite of its bad screen and dual cores???
Is there any ACTUAL difference in performance between 625 and 630 ( in my country 630 is not available for testing.. so any insight with hands on experience is welcome)
And last but not the least which of these two will be more future proof??
I'd expect the 630 to be more future-proof, but the 625 is good for at least the next two years or so, I expect. Well, it'll be well behind the curve by then, but that will be true of any budget phone. The 630 will probably be respectable a bit longer, though.
The lack of a flash would really irritate me, as I use my camera's flash as a flashlight all the time. Even on phones with actual xenon flashes, Nokia usually includes an LED to act as a flashlight.
The performance difference will be there, but it won't be huge. Most things that are CPU-bound won't benefit much from more cores. There are definitely exceptions, of course; for example when multitasking, but the usual limiter there is the RAM.
The screen on the 625 strikes me as being largely aimed at people with bad eyesight, honestly; it's the kind of thing my parents might like but the low PPI would bother me a lot. But then, I care a *lot* more about screen real estate than most people. Your typical user with a high-resolution phone turns the effective DPI down a bunch to make the text large enough to read and the buttons large enough to hit.
Not entirely sure what you mean by "on-screen nav bar". If you mean using software buttons that are technically part of the screen, I don't think that'll make much difference; all Windows phones have the same set of buttons right now anyhow (although I've heard Microsoft is relaxing that requirement).

thanks for the informative answers...two years is a more than enough great deal if windows supports lumia 625 for that long ( atleast the 8.1 and the next version) ... as u have mentioned the performance difference wont be THAT huge so i will surely be buying a 625... front cam, flash ( i also use it as a light source in emergencies) these things are too precious to give up for some pure black display with higher PPI... thanks..
OK.
Looked at it again, I think you're definately better off buying the 625
They'll upgrade your softwares soon
The 630 improvement is badly thought out and executed... The 625 is actually better built.
And it's still Nokia.
Go out and but the 625

Hi guys sorry again for bothering... how is 820 for a choice??? its only a bit more pricy than 625 but seems to have better hardware.... release date is though a lot older.... any ideas???
Well Lumia 820 is same old as Lumia 620. If you want better screen, better cover quality than Lumia 920 or 925. If you aren't interested in new latest device, than Lumia 920 be good choise and cheaper.

[Q] Which phone should I get?

Well I'm thinking to get a windows phone8 so will it be okay buying it?? (the nokia lumia 730)
Or should I go with any other android??
TEll me plz!!!!!!
Details of Nokia Lumia 730
You have a nice choice with Lumia 730, it runs on Windows 8.1 OS and 1.2GHz quad-core processor. It is handy with 4.7 inch OLED capacity touchscreen display, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protecting the screen and the clear black display. It has 8 GB internal memory with expandable microSD card up to 128 GB and 1 GB RAM. It offers 6.7 MP rear camera with LED flash and 5 MP front camera to capture the beautiful pictures. The battery capacity is also good 2200 mAh for long time talking. The connectivity options are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB. The current price is approx Rs 13,000.
Do you have any requirements? What is important to you in a phone?
For instance, Lumias usually feature great recording hardware (cameras, microphone). You'll get quite better images with a Lumia 830 than e.g. with an iPhone 6, which is way more expensive. Also, they're quite robust IMO: Lumias usually take more hits and drop until they have their display or case broken, compared to most other brands.
Furthermore, WP is easy to use, still works great on mid- and low-end hardware and just looks good.
One argument against WP is the bad support by certain companies: If you know an app on Android you definitely need, check whether it exists for WP too, or if there's an alternative.
