Wanting to buy Gear 2 Neo then root it - Samsung Gear 2 Neo

Hello xda, I really enjoy looking at the Gear 2 Neo so think i'll buy one, however the only Samsung device in our household is a Galaxy s3, could I pair it to that and then proceed to rooting the gear 2 neo? The s3 does have a bad imei but thats beside the point.
Once I have a custom rom the gear 2 neo from my understanding all we can do is connect it via bluetooth but I should be able to all the fancy stuff like Android wear has? Such as incoming calls, texting friends etc...I was also wondering if the IR blaster would still work after root?
Cheers for answering these questions.
Oh I'll be pairing it with a lg g2 after root, I may end up getting a s5 after though so would going to be stock rom be a simple process?

Hi, I have a gear 2 neo and it is paired to my galaxy s3 and all functions work perfectly.
You mentioned it being able to do all the fancy stuff that android wear does after a custom rom is installed?
You can do the things you listed like incoming calls and texting friends without rooting your gear 2 neo, those functions work on stock ROM so essentially there would be no need to put a custom ROM on your watch
Hope this helps

Hi sorry my mistake, as to my understanding you don't need to root your watch to achieve this, you just need to root your phone (LG) here is a link for you to follow, proceed at your own risk however

Hi, I'm assuming so yes, I previously put a custom ROM on my GS3 and manager to get Gear Manager back onto my phone, however it wouldn't connect it would say its connecting and do nothing so I reverted back to stock firmware, however since then if you look on the link I provided there is a fix for the problem I had.
However, like most things I'd say its hit and miss, what works for one person might not work for the other. Another thing I should have mentioned was that using the steps in the link above not all functions of the watch may work. If you read through the comments I'm sure somewhere people are saying what's working and what is not.
Hope you manage to get what you want done!

Gear 2 now that Android wear is out.... #failboat

So I bought a Neo and played around with it on my work Note 3. It has fair amount of apps. Well today I bought a S5 Active. I moved my Neo over to it (requires reseting it.) and got gear manager installed. Surprise to me... It seems even though things like the clock face is an app that runs on the phone if the developer doesn't select that it works with a phone you can't use it. Which should be a simple change for most things however it doesn't seem that developers update their Samsung store apps. For the S5 active there are only a handful of apps even though I am sure 99% all the apps would work if the dev would click the "it works with an s5 active"
After dealing with Samsung support (or the lack of it) I tried to get on the Samsung app store webpage. It seems they are having server errors so it was been working like crap. I was kind of able to get contacts for a couple of the app dev's to ask that they update their app to work with the S5 active. Samsung app store doesn't provide contact information unless the dev adds it. One of the devs linked to his google+ page. Which showed he is working to get the same app with improvements to work on android wear.
This got me thinking. Who is going to mess with this crappy half baked Samsung store with Google coming out with Wear? I'd guess we won't see anyone making new Apps for the tizen watches, they don't even update it to work with new phones it will run on with no changes...
I just got the Neo and I am on the fence of returning it. I figured I could get by with apps I had on the Note 3 until someone got a Wear rom for it. With the lack of apps when paired with the s5 I am not impressed at all and after my research today I am liking it less. I got it over the wear because it was only 150bucks vs 225, it has a speaker and IR blaster and Android wear is lacking in features (sure to change in 6 months to a year). I figured by the time wear got up to speed there would be a rom. Thinking about it some I am doubtful, I think the speaker and IR blaster (camera if it is a gear 2) will prevent it from ever happening. None of the wear watches have these so I'd guess there isn't low level support.
I guess I need to return it and wait for the 360 come out.
I had the same problem with my active. I modified the build prop to identify my device as a regular s5 and have all the apps again.

I'm definitely going to sell my Neo and wait for the Moto360. I like the Neo fine, but am getting sick to death of having to run stock based ROMs. I will miss some features of the G2, but damn that 360 looks beautiful and development should be great

Phone is rooted, not the watch. I rooted by using towelroot. Look in the particular forum for your phone for instruction, I don't want to give bad advice.
I understand how to root. My question now is, will this work with any phone?

Hi folks. Buying a Gear 2 neo

I am grabbing a neo today and was curious about compatibility with aosp. I have a note 2 currently running cm11 based vanir.
I can go back to tw but I was curious if things would work okay as is?
Also curious about library control for google play music.
Anything else I should know as a new neo owner?

I just asked the exact same question, then read through the forums and found yours. I see no one answered you. Did you find out for yourself? I would really like to know the answer because I'm getting ready to buy a g2n tomorrow and I wanted to be sure because I really don't want to go back to a touchwhiz rom. Thanks

I use the gear with an lg g3 so no tw for me. All works good and with my rom you can also install apk outside the galaxy app store.
You can search the answer for your question also under the gear 2 forum since the hw are basically the same. If a thing works for gear 2 it will works also for gear 2 neo.

Galaxy Gear 1 issues with note 4

I'm quite happy with the note 4 so far and would like to keep it but I'm having issues with my Gear. I'm not sure if this is rom (currently on Null rom) related or note 4 only supports tizen, but these are my issues. I don't have these issues with my note 3.
1. When I get a text and I open it on the watch, it's supposed to clear the notification on the phone but it's not. So I still have to go the my messages on the phone and view them so the notification goes away.
2. I have my gear set up to auto unlock my phone when its near it, but it's not working. It stays locked (pattern unlock)
Anyone else with the Gear having any of these issues? If you're not can you tell me if you are using stock android rom or tizen. TIA.
interesting...I have a gear 2 neo coming, and I have a thread here as well, as so far, everyone says the Gear2 works flawlessly.
I assume the gear 1 and gear 2 use different firmware, so maybe that has something to do with it..
you might want to post this question in the "main" note 4 thread, to get more folks to look at it..
I'm also running null_23. Can confirm issue 2. I'm using hangouts for SMS. Not sure if notifications are dismissing for that, I'll let you know.

Thanks for the confirmation. I tried rolling back to stock android rom but still the same. I really hope I don't have to go to tizen. I need my 60 second recoding which only can be had with Null rom.

Wase4711, Gear 1 and Gear 2 are significantly different. Gear 1's have the option of running android OR tizen, whereas gear 2 folks are pretty much locked into Tizen and that's that.
thanks, I did not know that:good:
whats the real difference when running either of them, outside of apps you might be able to load on the android OS?
tomorrow will be a busy day, configuring the note 4 and the gear 2!:cyclops:

using a regular rom on the Note 1, you can install LOTS of goodies.
Gear 2 apps are significantly more limited. IMO the gear 2 looks cleaner without that ugly wart camera.

for me, the gear 2 had most of the things I would care about on it, plus, I knew getting the note 4 around the same time, my head would be exploding just getting that setup how I want it, let alone having to configure/learn how to use a Gear 2..Yeah, that "wart" of a camera on the gear 1 looked terrible..
How are you guys using null without Bluetooth tethering?
quick update; the gear 2 works fantastic with this phone..
I cant believe how clear and loud making a phone call from a watch actually is!
Plus, I get the "HD Voice" notification on the watch while calling, and its as clear as a bell!

its not so bad; even though there arent a ton of programs for it, i really just want it for notifications/calls/texts/email and the pedometer and work out stuff. All that works great so far on a stock, non rooted note 4

Ya I use mine for mostly call, text notification, unlock feature but also camera and video recording. It beats holding a phone sometimes and having a 60 second recording (only available on custom rom) is a great.

Does anyone know if the Gear 1 works with our Note 4?
Been looking around and it seems it doesn't, but wanted to double check.
I can but one from a friend for $80 right now, but it doesn't do me any good if I can't link the two.
Thanks

Huh? Can you explain that lol. What's Null 23?
Oh ok, nvm. So your gear is rooted...
And null 23 is the rom. So stock I can't, but rooted I can correct?
Null 23 here too. Works great. Never tried with the stock ROM, sorry. Might ask in the Gear forum too.
Running my Gear 1 (with Tizen) with my Note 4 (stock ROM unrooted). I got my Gear 1 after I had my Note 4. The Gear 1 stock ROM was Android and would not pair with my Note 4. After flashing Tizen, I've had a flawless experience.
My recommendation: if you are willing to flash the Gear 1 with Samsung's Tizen ROM, definitely go for it.
Working perfectly for me and my gear 1 isn't rooted.

So it's working stock for you?
I had null rom 23 on mine and even with stock rom the auto unlock feature doesn't work. So I upgraded to tizen and now everything is working. Also battery last longer on tizen.
Totally stock on both, works fine for me. I never did the Tizen upgrade though but it shouldn't make a difference.

Yes it was working stock. I rooted my note 4 and works as well. No problems here. You can see my watch paired.
I have both, stock, and they connect fine...
Kinda sorta unsatisfied with some of the options, though. The lack of app variety (paid and otherwise, there are a metric ton of clock faces and, apparantly, not much else that I could work with), is leaning me heavily towards Android Wear at the moment. (Especially considering Tockle, which can interact with Tasker, doesn't seem to have an equivalent on the Gear's ecosystem. With the Gear, I'd likely have to use LaunchGear or Wearable Widgets for a similar effect.)
Still doing research on that, though.

There is no option to return it because I bought it from another country.
Do I have any recourse or way to use the device? Even with limited functionality?
Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Are there are foreseeable plans of a Samsung update to allow pairing with Nexus 5 Lollipop?
Thank you.

How likely is it? Is using Gear Manager a compromise compared to Android Wear?
Would it be better to just sell the watch and get one that is more compatible?

I tried it on a very early alpha version of lollipop on my Samsung device and it worked. But I hate to burst your bubble, it will be at least another couple of months until it is stable and more generally available. It relies heavy on gear manager which relies on the touchwiz environment. Why, for Pete's sake, this route was chosen is maybe one of Samsung's downfalls. Within two years they will be out of the market if they keep going with their business model, this consumer market does not care, but like you, will remember. Examples of such electronic giants reduced to rubble? Nokia, Nortel, Blackberry
Consumers want stuff to work, simple without all these prerequisites that are in fine print.
Tbh you are best of selling or donate it to a family member with a Samsung phone that has to be running Jellybean 4.3 or KitKat. Preferably a galaxy phone so S4, Note3, ß5 or Note4. Others.... Will not work without breaking their OS
Sad but true
Anyone tried Gear 2 Neo to see if it works with the newly pushed Android 5.0.1 on i9500 and i9506?
I'm curious if it will work from day 1 on i9505 when 5.0.1 will be pushed to these devices.
Thanks!
I have i9506, nordic edition and gear 2 neo, and they work together. Even better than on Kitkat, as s health was not receiving the Gear data for pedometer and such.
Now even that works. My s4 on the otherhand is laggy as hell with 5.0.1 , but that is not the issue here
I've installed i9505 5.0.1 and Samsung Gear doesn't work anymore. When started, it blinks a 1-2 times and crashes silently. I cannot connect to the watch with anything else (Android Wear for ex.) either.
Any ideas?
Later edit: I enabled bluetooth debug in Android Wear and tried several more times to connect through S-Gear and now it seems it connected and is trying to install additional software... hope it works out.
Haha, phone did a factory reset on the watch and now I'm trying again to connect to it .
Later edit: after managing to soft brick my phone, I reinstalled the 5.0.1 and this time, amazingly enough, Samsung Gear worked as it was supposed to so my watch is back to normal functions again.

Hello,
I tried every possible thing I found on the internet. Even went to change the name of the phone and model in /system files, without any success. I did manage, after downgrading to 4.4.4 to connect to the gear 2 neo, but I couldn't use any of it's features except answering the phone via the watch. I'm thinking maybe I can change the ROM of the watch to tizen and then make a connection with android wear. I searched but didn't find anyone who did this on gear 2 neo. Theoretically, it should work. I will post if I manage to do something.
Cheers,
Alex

Answering calls work with Lollipop too, just pair watch in Bluetooth settings. Second... You should install Android rom on watch, not Tizen. There is also Android Wear mod possibility... Roms for Gear 2 should also work on Neo (except camera)
