I just picked up an S5 from radio shack and it's still running NCE firmware. I checked for updates and see that there's is an OTA available. I've frozen the at&t updater for the time being and was wondering what the pros and cons of updating. So far I've only rooted and frozen the updater. Holding off on further debloating while I figure out if I should take the OTA.
A few questions:
Are there any advantages to the newer firmware (ND3?) beyond some additional bloat from at&t? Are there any advantages to staying on NCE? Would I need to unroot to take the update? If I don't, will the OTA break root? Is the newer firmware still rootable with towelroot?
Thanks in advance for any insight you guys can provide!

I'd like to know this, too. Updated to KK not knowing that downgrading was impossible. So now I need to find a new safety net in case I mess it up.
I'm not exactly sure where you are? Or what you're actually attemptong to do. But try this... IF you're NOT on "OFFICIAL" OTA KK 4.4.2

How can I tell if I'm on the "Official" or not?

Easiest way is to just check what version rom you are using. Unless you are using custom rom, it'll either be MLG for leaked version Kitkat or NC2 which is the official latest Kitkat. I think the OP was talking about the leaked version Kitkat which has the old (better) bootloader.
The latest NC2 has updated bootloader which make it impossible to downgrade or root.
If you are still on MLG and never updated your bootloader (by installing NC2), then you should be able to go back to MJ5 JellyBean. Everyone or most of us on official NC2 is stuck with this version and regretting taking the OTA update.
I have AT&T and just wanted to make sure, the newest firmware that came out I am able to use towelroot again right?
So if I wanted to update to the new firmware with the fingerprint scanner improvements etc
I would have to unroot my phone, try to do the OTA? Is there any other way I can do this? I remember I renamed some files to try and stop updates but don't remember exactly where.
Is there an alternative way of doing it? can someone explain the steps I need to do? and what if I do a nandroid backup through safestrap, can I use this same back up with the new firmware or would I have to start over from scratch?
I can't live without root, I like using on screen buttons on my S5
What firmware version are you currently on? Both the original ANCE and the AND3 OTA can be rooted. Haven't seen anything yet about something newer than AND3.

Build number KOT49H. G900AUC2AND3
so it's safe to update with the newer firmware from AT&T?

You already have the newest firmware available from AT&T and yes you can root that. If you start getting update notifications then I would hold off on those until someone can verify if root is achievable. So far AT&T has pushed out an update newer than what you already have.
If they have pushed out a newer update what's the numbers on it. I haven't been on xda since rooting my S5 and was wondering if we can safely update and keep root.

AT&T hasn't released it yet
I read that a Samsung S5 G900A that took the OTA update could be downgraded and then rooted, yet I can't find that information on this website and don't really trust others. This info was specific to the G900A-OC4, not the G900F or others. Is it possible or not?
EDIT: There's even a service on eBay offering a remote IMEI repair where downgrading from 5.0 on a G900A is $10 extra. Mentioning this because they obviously have to downgrade and root to do that, and if they're able to downgrade 5.0 OC4 why can't the rest of us?
Probably because they are lying. Who though, they might have found a way and are just charging for it, as far as we know though, it is not possible to downgrade from the 5.0 ota unless you updated through flashfire.

If you used muniz_ri's method and flashed the rooted oc4, it should have came with an old bootloader so just downgrade to nce and it should work.

It seems like it is possible to update from the OE2 update to OF3 and still keep root on the ATT Galaxy S6, so I think it'd be possible to do the same for ATT Edge.
See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s6/general/g920aucu2aof3-flashfire-update-t3156221
Can anyone with more knowledge and expertise of the subject see if it's possible with our Edge devices?
I also found an S6 thread that showed success updating from OF3 to OF4 (i believe OF4 has that stagefright fix) while still keeping root.
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...920aucu2aof3-to-of4-flashfire-update-t3181135
I'm fairly certain it's possible, just don't have the knowledge to do it myself. I'm sure a lot of Edge users are not updating past OE2 because they want to keep root since you can't downgrade back to OE2.
Thanks for your input in advance!
Would be awesome if we could get this done
I would think a ROM could be made based off OF3/4 while keeping baseband and such down on OE2. This has been my experience in the past since my S2 days. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or experience to dedicate to this.

Hopefully, a dev with an S6 edge can help with this.

This 5.1.1 is ****. Any way to downgrade?
Very sluggish and unstable.

I am still at 5.0 and I think I have corupted data files and need to do a total wip with a new firmware. If 5.1.1 is not good can some one tell me which firmware to get and how to get it? Also maybe a link on how to update it, I am no longer on the att network and I need my phone asap. Thanks a million.
AT&T Samsung-sm-G900A
So is it fairly accurate to assume that if I have an AT&T Samsung-sm-G900A with 5.1.1 update from AT&T I cannot root the phone because I can't downgrade the rom to a lower version that will allow me to root?

right,
I'm hoping though that 5.1.1 to 5.0.1 is still possible.
