here's what I did (thanks to those fellows who helped me) From stock ICS going to JB (with the old bootloader)
1. re-flash your phone using smartflash cleaner: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1987772 (backup first)
2. If flashing successful, you're into the Gingerbread bootloader. Power ON your phone, in CWM recovery, go to Mount USB, connect phone to PC using usb cable. It'll ask you to format, just press Yes. Internal storage will be formatted.
3. Download ROM (Raum's CM10.1): http://d-h.st/O6P -> this is what I called my base install...after download, rename it to cm-10-20130106-NIGHTLY-p990.zip
4. Download the file here: http://code.google.com/p/openstar2x/...=label:SU660 -> look for the 15A version.
5. Unzip the file 15a. Copy cm-10-20130106-NIGHTLY-p990.zip into 15a folder. Run fixall.bat. If ask what kernel, select option 4. If ask change wireless.ko, type Y. wait until finished. (Y because I got issues with wifi, bluetooth and calls with the stock wireless.ko)
6. Reboot your phone. Back to CWM recovery, again, go to Mount USB, copy cm-10-20130106-NIGHTLY-p990.zip in which it was converted to cm-10-20130106-NIGHTLY-su660-fixed.zip to your internal storage. After copy, install zip file from internal storage, select cm-10-20130106-NIGHTLY-su660-fixed.zip.
7. Should work flawlessly. After that, you can download official CM10.1 nightly, just rename it (same as step 3). You can also download custom kernel for CM10.1 here: http://upfile.vn/4J7n ...flash it after flashing the rom.
8. Enjoy!
hope this helps

See several posts below for the steps that worked for me
I'm posting this here because my post in the Q&A forums has received zero replies.
I feel like I've tried everything. I installed the UVMA1 over-the-air update and have lost and am unable to regain root. I seriously need a solution to this.
Has anyone been able to root the most updated SGH-T879 with the UVMA1 build?
Re: [Q] Rooting the OTA updated UVMA1 build
You have to do following steps
1.download CWM recovery. tar
2.download odin flashable CWM touch recovery.tar
3.go to download mode
4.flash the UVAM1.tar file through odin
5.flash the CWM recovery.tar through odin
6.flash the CWM touch recovery.tar through odin
7.go to recovery mode flash the super user
8.reboot
You should be okay...
I hope that it helping you to Root the phone.
Let me know if you did.
Good luck..

After CWM has been installed, flash superusers through recovery.
https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/3sRc8Cz8TcpOLC
To change recovery to TWRP (which most people seem to prefer now days) flash TWRP zip through CWM recovery. I like this method better than trying to install TWRP through Goomanager, I always have trouble with that for some reason.
Paste below address into your browser
goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/sgh-t879/openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-sgh-879.zip
Now your phone is rooted and you have TWRP.
Re: [Q] Rooting the OTA updated UVMA1 build
I did as same as it.
But. I couldn't go to recovery
That is why important that make it sure flashing CWM touch recovery.tar through odin.
Maybe just my phone?.
Thank you.

I got my phone to root, but have been unable to change the recovery so I can switch to 4.2.2.
I will clean this up as time permits.
Success!
Through trial and error, on Ubuntu and Windows, I have managed to successfully root the UVMA1 build. I did not screenshot the process so I'll be going from memory. On the other hand I will post a stock backup of the ROM for everyone to use as needed.
This did not work on Ubuntu, had to use Windows.
You will need:
Android Tools SDK
CWM
most recent ODIN
Superuser zip
Steps:
download Android Tools SDK.
Extract to your C: on your windows machine
Open command prompt and navigate to the Platform-Tools directory
enable debugging mode on your Note (Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging
Leaving your phone on, connect via USB to your computer
wait while the Samsung drivers load
On command prompt type "adb reboot-bootloader" or "adb reboot bootloader" and wait (might need to try both)
Your phone should reboot into downloader mode
Open the newest version of ODIN
In Odin, nothing significant will change, I only saw a blue box in the first square top left
Click on 'Bootloader' button and select the tar.md5 file from Tomin's Goodies thread (link to come later)
In Odin, click on Start
Odin will scroll some text in the little window (bottom left) and then stop. I waited about five minutes. Nothing changed.
Disconnect your phone, pull the battery, press the power button (to dissipate magic electrons), put the battery back in and turn the phone on
Your phone should show a screen saying there is an issue with the Firmware and to use Samsung Kies to fix it. IGNORE THIS, don't do anything
Reconnect phone to PC via USB
wait about 30 seconds for the computer
In Odin, press Start again.
Odin should do something differently than the first time, you should see the top left window go green and 'Reset Ok' in the bottom left window.
Your phone will reboot. If it loads to Android then go to the command prompt window on your PC and type 'adb reboot recovery'
wait about a minute. CWM should load on your phone.
Now is the time to install Superuser zip through CWM.
Additionally, clear dalvik and other caches, reset permissions and backup your rom to external SD card now.
If anyone tries this, please document the process with screenshots so we can create a more comprehensive tutorial.
Hey guys,
So i'm sure this is probably already out there, but I wanted to give everyone my method of success with rooting the latest version on Android (5.0) on our N5. Here it is:
Prereqs: You'll need to have these downloaded first
TWRP - Download to your Computer

SuperUser v2.19 - Download to your Phone
http://click.xda-developers.com/api...ainfire.eu/593/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.19.zip
Platform Tools - Download to your Computer
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390355257214632011
Steps
1) Download SuperUser v2.19 to your phone.
2) Turn off your phone, and reboot into the BootLoader by holding Power + Vol (-). Wait until you see the Green Android Robot.
3) Plug your phone via Micro USB to your Computer.
4) Download and Extract Platform Tools in a "New Folder" on your C: Drive. Give the folder an easy name such as "N5" or something similiar
5) Download and Extract the TWRP recovery image to the "New Folder". Rename the "openrecovery-twrp-2.8.0.1-hammerhead.img" to "Recovery". NOTE: It may ask you to overwrite the exisiting recovery image (if applicable). Select Ok/Yes
6) Open your Command Prompt (Windows) and type the following: (You can copy and paste if you'd like)
* cd..\..
* cd c:\(Your New Folder)
* fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
6) Let TWRP flash to your phone (Should take no more than ~10 secs).
7) Toggle your phone to "Recovery" by using the Voume Up/Down keys. Press the Power button to select/confirm.
8) Once TWRP has loaded, press the "Install" icon, followed by "Zip File", and proceed to the "Downloads" folder that you have the SuperUser v2.19 zip downloaded.
9) Select the zip and confirm by swiping at the bottom.
10) Reboot back to the "System"
11) Done

I tried to be as clear as I could with this write up, so I hope this makes sense. It really is straight forward.
Although I'm definitely not the one who came up with this method or files, I wanted to share what worked best for me to Root my N5 running the 5.0 OTA.
If this helped you get root back or makes sense, give a "Thanks".

Thank you for posting this. I tried three other methods to get root back before this, and none of them worked. This one did the trick without any problems at all. Thanks again!

What part are you stuck at?
For me, I needed to erase cache for the TWRP to stick. Otherwise, when I rebooted it was gone and was using the default recovery.
Use the command:
Code:
fastboot erase cache
before
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
if you have the same problem installing TWRP.
I used chainfires auto root for the N5 (stock lollipop Boot loader). Worked great. Just download to a PC put phone into boot loader and run the bat file. I can't link but a quick google will find it for you.

Just put your phone in bootloader and run cf-autoroot from windows if you dont want twrp.

Had the same issue and needed to flash the updated kernel from chainfire : https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95747613655047375
Why are you trying to do this the hard way? Just use chainfire's autoroot.
It works perfect and it's literally one command
fastboot boot CHautoroot.img (or whatever the file name is)
cf-auto-root is the way
I agree, just use cf-auto-root. You should be good to go in no time.
Just for FYI, if you already have unlocked bootloader, it won't wipe your data, if you are concerned.
CF-auto-root roots N5 without modifying your kernel. I believe, if you flash the SuperSU in TWRP, it would modify the kernel. It's nothing bad, but if you want to remain "stock" and don't want to reflash stock ROM later to get the OTA, just use "Full unroot" from SuperSU app and you are stock and ready for next OTA.
I have encrypted the storage on my Nexus 5. Will CF-Auto-Root wipe my storage?

Ok so the method was to unlock bootloader, flash twrp and flash magisk zip.
The other way was using temporary cwm for intel devices using T2 option. What this does is that it gives you a temporary CWM session which can be used to flash magisk zip.

Because I noticed myself that it was beginning to make a mess with it, so I decited to write this guide which (what I mensioned) contains tweak and fixes to known bugs that are in the software.

I. Bootloader unlocking
We will start our journey in a beautiful world modified by android with unlocking the bootloader.
What is it?
Bootloader is something like BIOS from computers but in the phone. It let you to boot many software, like recovery. We can't boot directly into recovery without unlocked bootloader because phone has got some closed startup procedure (like POST test in computers). To break it, we must unlock bootloader.
So how to do that?
We must:
1. Download RAR file and you'll get 2 folders namely unlock and ASUS_Android_USB_drivers_for_Windows
2. Install the drivers according to your OS and go the unlock folder
3. Reboot your phone to fastboot mode by pressing volume up + power on at the same time.
4. Connect it to pc and open unlock.bat in unlock folder
5. Bootloader successfully unlocked.
II. Install TWRP
After unlocking bootloader, we need some recovery to install custom software on our beast.
To do that:
1. Download this TWRP (F2FS support) and place it into unlock folder
2. Reboot into fastboot
3. Connect the phone into PC
4. In unlock folder, run cmd and type "fastboot devices". You should see some device plugged into your PC.
5. Type "fastboot flash recovery XXX.img" when XXX means the name of recovery.
6. When installing process finish, press volume down + power as long as you doesn't see fastboot warning.
7. Phone will get into TWRP.
To get into TWRP just presss volume down + power until you doesn'ts see fastboot warning.
III. Decrypt enrypted data
1. Download the decrypt.zip and copy to SDcard
2. Flash in recovery
3. Format /data
4. Reboot
IV. Flashing custom ROMs
Now the main aim of customization: CUSTOM ROM <3 It let you to do many modifications like style of font in system, theme, newer version of software and many many more.
Just:
1. Copy all your necessary software into SD card
2. Boot your device into TWRP
3. Go to "install", pick firmware which you need and swipe to flash
4. Repeat step 3 with gapps
5. Reboot to system
When you want to install some kernel or NXP or magisk or something else, don't do that after flashing system. Before, flash firmware, system and gapps, reboot and configure. Then go to TWRP and flash 3rd party mods.
V. Unlocking Camera2API
To get GCAM work property, we need to unlock camera2api. If you don't know what's that, go there -> https://www.thegeeksclub.com/camera-2-api-check-smartphone-support/
1. Power off the phone and enter fastboot mode.
2. Fire up fastboot terminal and connect your phone to the pc, enable USB debugging mode from dev. options too.
3. Run the command: fastboot oem enable_camera_hal3 true

* introduction *

Hi,
First of all, thank you for the detailed steps and instructions.
I downloaded the RAR mentioned in the step 1 above. When I click open after downloading, there's an error preventing me to open. I also tried extracting but I'm unable to do so.
Please provide me the updated link or reupload the file so that I can download it,
Thanks.
