Hi, I'm going to India for a month in September.
I have an unlocked S3 Mini and a Samsung Tablet, which I plan to take with me.
What is the best way for me to get internet while I'm travelling around?
I was thinking:
i) get an Indian sim that allows 3G/4G (?) with which i could tether my tablet. (I assume the S3 Mini is 4G compatible?)
ii) get a MIFI for a month but this seems more expensive.
Look forward to hearing from you, many thanks.
Its your choice whatever you choose but lemme explain you each and every thing ..
In India only three companies are providing good connection for 3g. And
4g is not available in most of the cities or you can say it's not arrived in India yet ..
The companies are Reliance, Vodafone, and Airtel .
3g recharges are as follows for 1gb .
Reliance - 156 Rs.
Vodafone - 250 Rs.
Airtel - 250 Rs.
And if you go for WiFi then it would cost more because you need to buy a router that would easily cost charges of 4 months in once..
so choice is yours and you can select whatever you think right but in my opinion you should go for Sim card option .
Hi, thanks for replying.
How fast is the 3G? Let's say when I use it to tether my tablet.
If you have used 4g then you may feel its slow otherwise there won't be an issue and you won't feel its slow ..
It's enough if you want to do some surfing and downloading small stuffs ..
If you thether with your tablet than also it works quite well ..[emoji4]
So does MIFI use the same sim card as for the phone?
I assume 3G would be faster from the MIFI device than tethering from the phone?
Yes its uses the same sim card .
But obviously mifi is going to slightly faster than mobile thethring bcoz mifi is dedicatedly designed for it ..
By the way you can mobile thethring instead of mifi that would be preferable ..
And it won't cost you money
OK, many thanks for replying.
Probably, I will use WiFi where it's available and have the 3g option when there's no WiFi.
Re: sim cards, I'm guessing the best option for me will be to buy separate sims for calls and data, OR is there a good package available?
You state Reliance is the cheapest for data, but do they have connectivity problems for example? Thanks.
Nope bro Reliance is one of the best network available at least in Mumbai and in my knowledge. And Reliance comes on 2nd after Vodafone in connectivity.
And you should consider only single sim for both your needs ..
And airtel is also good in connectivity ..
OK, will look for a Reliance SIM when I arrive.
Also, as a foreigner to India, apparently I have to provide all my personal details to be able to purchase a prepaid SIM? This seems strange to me.
What do you advise on where to get my SIM? Thanks.
I would advice you to contact to your any of your known body or relative in India and ask for ID proof of him that would be much better and easy to get the sim card rather than submitting your all details .
Otherwise you know what you needs to do to get the Sim card .

Hi all,
I know a fair amount of XDA-Developer members are from Europe so I thought I would ask you:
I am travelling all of Europe for five months, visiting about 15 countries.
Do you think it is better to take my current SIM card over to Europe and pay the huge roaming fees, or would it be cheaper to buy a SIM over there to call home?
Is there a SIM that covers the whole of Europe. Google says that there isn't, and I will have to get a new SIM in each country if I don't use roaming.
Obviously, I will be using Skype and VOIP as much as possible if I can.
Any ideas?
skype + voip = data roaming=massive fees
use local sims.
Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant Skype and Voip at Internet Cafes etc. Not on my mobile device.

Places in UK that provide free WiFi access are few and far between. The Cloud and BT provide access points but charge an arm and a leg for it!
Local PAYG SIM's will eat your cash if you call international.
O2 and others who say they are independant but actually use O2's network will not give you SMTP and POP3 free access only a basic WAP access.
IMHO after trying loads (Live in UAE but go home to UK 4x per year) I found the Orange PAYG best overall as it will give you full web access but checkout 3's PAYG if ya want faster access to Tínternet.
Travelling Europe means many different providers. If you plan on staying in any one country then get a local SIM but free WiFi is most prevalent outside of UK. I personally have a wallet full of various cards from my service engineer days but it is becoming much easier to find cafe's and hotel lobby's that give free WiFi in continental Europe.
Load up a WiFi scanning prog before you go such as WiFiFoFum and you will find them.
It has to be said the T-Mobile in the UK offer a fairly decent PAYG deal, £2.50 for 5 days "unlimited", you want the 5-day WebnWalk pass.
Free WiFi via the Cloud can be had at most McDonalds, again not ideal but better than nothing.
If you're going to be traveling to over 15 countries, then purchasing a bunch of local prepaid SIM cards can be a hassle. There are a bunch of companies that make international prepaid SIM cards that specifically cater to businesspeople/ travelers. Most work in over 150 countries so you can make calls from just one sim card anywhere, and rates are pretty cheap. I personally used a card by onesimcard.com when in Europe. Had no problems and the sound quality was excellent. The onesimcard website has a great rate calculation page where you can compare against providers like T-Mobile.
roaming fees are ca. 0.60 € pro minute. even you receive call you have to pay something like 0.40 € pro minute..
its better that u buy simcard for every country
for example in Austria there is a PREPAID simcard for 20 € which has 2 GB DATA Transfer volume for Internet usage... its very cheap for national and international calls, you can also call and send sms with this simcard
check here: www.yesss.at and here http://www.yesss.at/diskont-surfen/home.php
OR
if you have a Wifi phone, there are a lot free wifi spots, you can use wifi + voip from your phone to make a call,
have a nice trip
Maybe this is something you can look at.
https://www.united-mobile.com/?p=&l=en
You would only need to buy one sim-card.
No experience myself with this product.
in france there is not so much wifi spot (too bad)...
in france there is europeane formula with Orange and SFR (perhaps bouygue but this operator not using a standard range... so forget with your foreigner phone lol)...
the only problem is that those formula are not in prepaid simcard... only with normal formula.
perhaps you should ask your provider... sometime there is some solution with them. (when i go to USA Orange make me a special offer for the 2 month i go over there...).
Hello.
Well basically i have a 3g modem with unlimited 3g that I don't use much, only when I'm at my countryhouse. On my cappy i don't have a data package plan, they charge me 4 uss per mb :/, and i would feel rather stupid paying another 35~ uss for another unlimited plan, specially when I will never use them both at the same time.
My thought was to get one of those dual china micro sim adapters, and a micro sim from both of my lines. And i was hoping the 3g work on at least one of them. So i can switch my lines for 3g usage without changing the chip.
But on the chip china dual sim card adapters there is no info about 3g functionality. Whereas in another page from Spain, it claims that the china adapters don't support 3g, but i think they are biased because they sell their own adapter for over 70 euros. And, since that page is the only one that has any information about this, i found it hard to decide on where to trust them and get directly one of their adapters; or buy a china made one and see if they work for my needs, since, besides them, I have not found a page that says that 3g wont work on them.
Does anyone tried this, or 3g over any china dual sim card adapter? Any information to clarify this is more than welcomed.
BTW is not that i want to cheat my carrier or anything alike. I thought this over and over; on the one hand i could just put the data plan on my handset and stop paying the other line. But on the other i could benefit of the mobility of having them both separate, specially if i leave the 3g dongle at the country house, and if there is someone there that might use it (i will know of this), i wont use the 3g on my device. So by having the 3g on another separate line I'm no longuer attached to give internet only to the place I am.
Hello,
i'm going to U.S. for holidays and i'd like to have a prepaid sim for my nexus for the month i will stay there.
Reading here and there i found that my europen nexus probably won't work on 3g AT&T, right?
So the only option i found is T-Mobile, that seems to have a prepaid sim card on which i can activate the data option, altough on their site i read "Already have a T-Mobile Prepaid phone that you need to activate?" i think it will work on my nexus too, or am i wrong?
Any help will be appreciated
Your european one i think could be either. Both the AT&T and T-Mobile ones (here) work on 2100Mhz for Europe so no way to tell. I think however that yours would be the T-mobile version since those were released first.
Anyways, there is Simple Mobile and other prepaid carriers that you just pop your SIM card into the phone and you are good to go. TMobile has $70 Unlimited talk/text (2GB data) and Simple Mobile has $60 Unlimited everything.
Simple Mobile uses T-Mobile's network still so same coverage as T-Mobile.
If it can help mine is an amoled one... so sure of the first released.
Maybe i can ask in the shop if they make me try a sim card to see if it works...
Simple Mobile, ok i've found that online and saw the prices, really good, hope to find a shop somewhere in NY where i land on the first day.
Thanks!
They don't really have Simple Mobile stores but you should be able to get a SIM from those little shops they have in NY. Just check online for the locator for somewhere to buy the SIM as lots of places sell the reloads but not the SIM.
Thanks for the tips, i'll look for the sim in the shops, will find one with the sim cards too
Just go with T-Mobile itself. They have a prepaid data day pass, $1.50/day.

I didn't see that option, thanks, just seen on their site, it's interesting.
Just hope that my nexus will work... in the specs i see UMTS 900/2100, so it should be T-Mobile frequencies
Maybe this can help someone in the future...
My Nexus work fine with T-Mobile, i made the daily plan 1.49$ a day for unlimited data.
Works like a charm in NYC, i'm having some problem in the south of USA now, but in the big cities it work well.
Thanks for the tips!
I have been using a N1 on T-Mobile on the $30/month for 1500 minutes/texts and 30MB of data. With Google Maps I soon burnt up the data and have purchased $1.45/day for unlimited data as I have needed it.
The phone works fine on TM - can't say that TM's network is that good though (this is in the San Francisco Bay Area) with regular dropped calls and data falling back to Edge quite often.
hi,
will my euro galaxy s work in japan (where I am going on vacation)?
Thanks,

It will work (roaming) but it probably will not work with a japanese sim card

Like zombrex said.
It will work, but I had problems calling and receiving calls from japanese cell phones. Apart from that everything worked for me.

3rd confirmation. I could use roaming in Japan. The European model is identical to the international model.
Just got back from holidaying in Japan. I can confirm that the Galaxy was fine there although I didnt make any calls (expensive!), mostly used data services to retrieve and send emails using UK sim card. Used wi-fi points and skype/tango where possible.
Thank you guys for the info, I'm glad my beloved galaxy will work in
Japan.
Are prepaid data or/and voice sim cards available in .jp to avoid
horrendous roaming charges?
What is the wifi hotspot situation in hotels and cities in general? Are
they mostly free?
I think there are no prepaid cards in japan like you know them.
Can't remember using free wifi hotspots except in the hotel. But once there was a free hotspot in a club. That was the only one i found^^
Hi !
I have the same kind of question.
I will go in Japan for 1 year, and as I saw that they sell Galaxy S in Japan, I was wondering if I could use my Galaxy S with a Japanese Sim card.
Do I need a Japanese rom ? Or any configuration ?
Thanks
Up !
No one can help me ?
If your phone is unlocked you'll be able to use a japanese sim
it wordks, japan user the different sim card size(smaller),you can buy the sim card cover to fix it.
Thank you DrFredPhD and eim886 !
The Rom doesn't matter ?

I looked for a sim card cover, but I only found a sim card adapter for micro-sim.
Where could I find a sim card adapter to use a japanese sim card on my phone ?
EDIT :
I found there is only 3 sizes for sim card : standard, mini-sim, and micro-sim.
But which one is used in Japan ?
hey trynium, did you find an answer to your question?
I have a North American version (Canada Bell) i9000 and really don't want to buy a new phone when I have a perfectly good one right here. Would the sim adapter work? Which network did you use and how did you go about it?
I was wondering if the North American version phone can run on Japan's network... if anybody out there could help, it'd be much appreciated

I went in Japan later than I expected.
I took a prepaid phone, so I could not really test with my SGS (no internet connection, lot of restrictions... for prepaid phone).
But the good point was that the sim card was a standard one. So sim adapter seems useless in this case.
The harder in Japan, is to buy a sim card without a phone. From what I know, there is not much problem than that !
By the way, sorry for the (very) late answer...
Hi
I am looking for new tablet tab S2 9.7" (now I have note 10.1 wifi)
Which version is better to buy?
I am thinking about LTE but I read that LTE version has poor development from xda
I want to use this tablet for 2 years and I know that support for custom roms is very important
What do you think about it? And about support for LTE version?
Personally I'd get the LTE version. I have the wifi and it works and I do use hotapot with my device whilenim out frequently but just having it ready to go and not draining my phone battery is worth it enough. It only that but you get vibration in the lte model.
LTE

You can use a 3g dongle on the wifi model.
I have the LTE model, but there's not much point to it as I never use it.
I would need another sim card and data plan. It's just as easy to use my phone as a wifi Hotspot.
I like having the LTE option. I feel no need for custom ROMs. This tablet is not flawless but it's running rather well on Marshmallow.
Sendt fra min SM-T815 med Tapatalk
If you have the extra cash, get the LTE one, you never know if you will use it, but you have it and can be use, the problem with wifi, not everywhere has wifi and good reception.
For me I use wifi if available, but I have a 3G sim card in my tab and it only cost approximate USD 32 for 10GB with a 12 monthss time limit, right now i've used about 6GB, I have till september to use it, already purchased another spare sim waiting to activate it after september.

Where are you getting the good deal on the 10GB of data for 12 months? That's a great deal! Will that work on an AT&T S2 LTE?
