[Q]Where to start? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had at least 7 android phones where flashing stock was never such a hassle or maybe it's just me who finds htc one flashing a lot trickier than other phones.
I am totally confused how i can flash a sense 6 RUU as I am still sitting on 4.3 sense 5.5 and I have a feeling that the kk on htc one is a lot better than 4.3. Please enlighten me.

1. Unlock bootloader @ HTCdev.
2. Flash a custom recovery.
3. Flash a Sense 6 / KK rom.
Remember with S-On devices, you need to flash the custom roms boot.img from fastboot.

Yeah, I want to stay stock and not unlock the bootloader. Is there a way to flash a RUU without unlocking and S-OFF etc?

Yeah of course, but you have to flash the correct RUU for your devices CID!
If you want to keep stock, you're better waiting 'till your carrier pushes the OTA to your device.

is there any other way, to unlock the bootloader rather than from htcdev cuz then they know that i've unlocked my bootloader, right?

I've read that if you S-Off your device, there's a way to revert the bootloader to say locked rather than relocked. But it's something i've never tried....

Not for the M7, boot.img is not secured.

In theory you should have received updates for that version, latest one is 6.09.401.5 (sense 6 and android 4.4.3) Are you sure you are still on stock rom?
With S-ON + locked bootloader, you can only flash RUU same or higher version that match your CID, MID and version base (.401). The latest RUU available for your phone is 4.19.401.9
With S-OFF you can flash every RUU version you want + you can flash OTA updates manually

well well well, I just checked and there's an update, 4.4.2.
Do you think that I should update this or are there battery or other stability issues with 4.4.2

go ahead with the update.
-Just a side note, I know you don't wish to unlock or s-off but if you ever wants to s-off, it will become harder with each ota updates (s-off exploit are patched with OTA). So if you want to s-off, do it now it will be easier. If you dont want S-OFF, proceed with the update.

So with S-off, i can flash any RUU, even if I want to downgrade? Also can i do it without unlocking the bootloader.
If so, can you direct me towards the procedure?

yes you can flash any RUU with s-off: signed ruu, decrypted ruu, lower/higher version, other version ruu (require to change CID/MID)
you will need to unlock bootloader to s-off
unlock bootloader
flash twrp recovery
root
flash an unsecured kernel or flash a custom rom pre-rooted that comes with an unsecured kernel
s-off using rumrunner
With s-off, you can set back to bootloader to LOCKED (not relocked) like if it was never unlocked and you can remove the TAMPERED flag from bootloader.

No, because you need to downgrade to hboot 1.44 to run this ruu and this require s-off
If you don't want to go s-off, you can restore stock rom and recovery by flashing that rom:

Yes and Yes, you have to select "stock recovery" when installing the Guru Reset for OTAs to install properly.

----> select WIPE, select "stock recovery", root and radio are up to you
you're all done, you will receive OTAs without any problems.
* You do not need to lock or relock bootloader, you can if you want but it's not necessary.
* if you choose root, then you may (or may not) loose it after OTAs, but it will not affect the OTA upgrade.
Hope that helps.

reflash the same rom, without selecting wipe (known as a "dirty flash").
there are no OTAs after 3.62 at the moment, and when they become available they'll work fine without messing with google services.

[Q] HELP with updating HTC One to 4.4...

Hello, I have a rooted international HTC One currently running 4.3 Android with Sense 5.0. I am trying to perform an OTA system update that I have received... I downloaded the new 4.4 Android (1.1 GB) and I have selected "Install Update". But when the phone restarts, it just enters recovery and opens TWRP by itself!
So then I try to flash the downloaded OTA file via TWRP, but that also fails... Does anyone know how I can get 4.4 on my HTC One? Thank you

You can't apply ota with a custom recovery, you need your stock recovery.

Depending on whats been done to the phone you can eather flash stock recovery and try the update from their or you have to ruu back to stock and take the update that way.
fastboot getvar all will tell you what stock recovery you need or what ruu to use

Do what cIsA said. Check the output of "fastboot getvar all". Look at your main-ver # and find the corresponding stock recovery. There is a thread in general section with a collection of stock recovery.
You can post the output of getvar here minus imei/sn and we will link you the correct recovery.
Okay so I ran a fastboot getvar all, and apparently there is no RUU for my device, because it is Latin American with a CID of HTC_332. (I searched almost everywhere)
Now, after flashing a 4.4 rom I downloaded, my HTC device wasn't turning on anymore (it was getting stuck at the HTC boot logo). So I restored from a backup I made in TWRP, and that didn't work either. So now my problem just got 1000x worse because of a mistake I just made now of completely wiping my device and the OS.
So for the moment I'll try to flash a new boot.img, get S-OFF again, and change the CID to 11111111 (as I have read) where I will then download a RUU I can use. I'll let you know what happens.
Whoa there.. No need to flash boot.IMG.
What's you're steps? I think you are about to make it worse
sent from my mobile device
Okay well I'm in a tight situation atm.
My phone is completely wiped, with no OS or anything. The only thing I have access to is fastboot, and the TWRP bootloader. Also considering my phone is wiped, I believe I have S-ON as well.
So what is the first step to just get a boot going? (unless I'm not completely screwed that is..)
EDIT- I have successfully flashed Android Revolution to my phone from TWRP by pushing the zip via adb fastboot. Got my phone running again. Step 1 complete.
Step 2 now is to get S-OFF again...
Step 3- Change my CID to 11111111 using the SuperCID method (there is no RUU for my Latin American CID; HTC_332)
Step 4- Use an appropriate RUU to get 4.4 stock after I have changed my CID.
Before I continue with these steps, can anyone confirm with me if I am on the right path?
Step 2 - Confirmed.
Step 3 & Step 4 ... What is an appropriate RUU? You have not yet posted a fastboot getvar all output yet. (remove imei)

These CID:
HTC__001
HTC__J15
HTC__A48
HTC__M27
are compatible with the 1.29.401.2 ruu.zip so i'll suggest you to use HTC__001 if you change your mind. Personally, I would stay on ARHD. No benefit to flash that RUU vs ARHD. ARHD is always up to date...

I dont know if you are talking about sim unlock or bootloader unlock but anyway, both sim and bootloader will stay unlocked even if you flash another rom or if you debrand the phone.
I see
@alray Yeah I mean sim unlock, Can you post a link of a guide to install stock htc rom to debrand. Will I be able to get OTA updates? What steps are needed Unlock bootloader, s-off, change cid custom recovery and install rom? Can you link me to a stock rom with ota for europe or international version. I had a look at the first link in your sig but its kinda confusing.
@nkk71 can you help?

If you want a full conversion, you can s-off the phone, change cid to HTC__001 and flash a x.xx.401.x RUU. Your best option to s-off on hboot 1.57 is probably sunshine s-off but its a paid exploit (25 USD) or you can try firewater, its free but it will require more steps and you have like 50% chance it will not work.
or the easier way, if you only want a debranded rom, you could only unlock the bootloader, flash twrp 2.6.3.3 and then flash a rom (like arhd 71.1)

@alray Hey I did everything and am now trying to get the right RUU for europe or international. I flashed this : RUU_M7_UL_JB_50_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.7_Radio_4A.13.3231.27_10.31.1131.05_release_310878_signed.exe and it seems to be fine except I am still s-off and an for some reason an option while doing the initial wizard called Tell HTC tells me this is a test device so this option will remain on. What is causing this? My device is a test device?! Wrong RUU?
Edit: I am updating the phone but it wont find the latest after every boot it finds the next. Now installing 4.3, it was 4.1.2 to begin with..

Tell HTC/test device is normal. You'll always get this message at the initial setup with s-off phones, don't worry with this.
The ruu will not turn back s-on and thats a good thing. Keep your phone s-off.

Yeah I thought it was the s-off causing this. Thanks for you reply, gonna install update after update and see if it comes up with the latest. Bit strange it doesn't install the absolute latest, but I guess the final update size would be huge to have all the fixes in previous versions in one.

HTC ONE M7 Rooting - How would I go back?

Hi everyone, I apologies if this is a bit of a silly question however I am attempting to root an android device for the first time and would just like to know what you thought about an issue which I am having.
My question is, I plan to root my phone and install TWRP recovery, if I ever needed to unroot I am under the impression I would need an RUU which matches the radio very I have. The details of the radio is 4T.29.3218.08 and the phone is from the UK (Europe). I cannot find this version anywhere. If I ever needed to unroot does this mean I would not be able to?
This is the only thing which is now stopping me from rooting my phone... Thank you in advance for your replies.

your on the newest software their is no 6.x.401 RUU
to return to stock you simply flash the stock odex rom and stock recovery / do a factory reset and your Stock
you would still have an unlocked bootloader but without s-off you can't fix that (unlocked to locked)

So a couple of questions. Does that mean there is never going to be an RUU for my phone or is it just with time there will be more for the current version? As for flashing to the odex Rom and stock recovery, the Rom would be simple enough for TWRP recovery, how would i do the stock recovery part? Or would they be an all in one installation, installing the Rom would also install the recovery?
Thank you for your help

HTC doesn't release RUU each time there is a new version. Maybe with the future release of android lollipop, we don't know.

flash the stock rom using twrp and then flash the stock recovery the same way you have flashed twrp recovery. Twrp will be overwritten by the stock recovery.
Just keep in mind that you'll need s-off if you want your warranty back (to set the bootloader back to *locked* (not relocked) and to remove the *tampered* flag)

@alray if i was to keep a backup of my stock rom before i installed a custom rom, could i then restore the backup of the stock rom and then restore the stock recovery?
Where can i get the stock recovery from? Once i find it is possible i can then root

Yes but if you make a backup of your rom after unlocking the bootloader, there will be some files missing (htc preloaded apps in /data/preload) which will prevent you to use ota updates is you restore this backup. There is a 6.09.401.10 nandroid backup including the /data/preload folder on android file host.

You can extract it from any 6.09.401.10 firmware or from the 6.09.401.5 to 6.09.401.10 ota zip file.
nvm, I found it here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001603803
@alray - So my steps to stock would be:
Download and install the rom using TWRP recoveryfrom the following address:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95832962473396068
Then install the stock recovery from the following link (Install is the same way I installed TWRP):
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001603803
If the phone is still S-ON, I will not be able to change the label so will have to make it S-OFF if I need to change - just out of curiosity, if I leave the phone S-ON will this affect OTA updates?
Then factory reset the phone - I should be back to a stock phone.
Would these steps be correct?
ashyk36 said:

yes:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_file.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
If the phone is still S-ON, I will not be able to change the label so will have to make it S-OFF if I need to change Exactly - just out of curiosity, if I leave the phone S-ON will this affect OTA updates? No, if you rom is 100% stock (which will be the case after restoring the above backup) and you have stock recovery, youre good for ota update. S-ON/S-OFF doesn't affect ota updates.
Then factory reset the phone - I should be back to a stock phone.
Would these steps be correct?

My phone has hit the purple tint issue which is a well known fault. I have spoken to HTC and they have said that they will fix under warranty. I need to return the phone back to stock. I know I can use the nandroid backup and the recovery in the post above but I am very confused on how to S-off.
My problem is there are so many guides (some of them being very old) on how to do this and I do not know which method to use. Could someone please point me in the right direction so I can return my phone back to stock.
Thank you so much

I would highly recommend to follow nkk71's super guide (linked in my signature). Everything is well explained in details, just make sure to read everything before beginning and also read the FAQ of his guide.
To achieve s-off, you will need to use Sunshine if your hboot is 1.57 or above. Sunshine cost 25$ USD. Its the only method to achieve s-off on hboot 1.54 and above.
S-OFF is a must to remove the tampered banner and set back the bootloader to ***LOCKED*** (not ***RE-LOCKED***) so your warranty is still valid, but again everything explained in that guide. If you have any question you can ask here or in nkk71's guide. If you have questions, post an updated "fastboot getvar all" at the same time.

The guide is really good, just one thing has thrown me though, Im not too sure which RUU to use.
I can see RUU for:
CID HTC__001
and MID PN0710000
but not baseband 4T.29.3218.08
Do I just use the files you linked me to in the posts above?

Baseband version is irrelevant when looking for RUUs. You want a ruu that match your CID, MID and firmware base (.401). Also you need the ruu to be hboot 1.44 (1.xx.xxx.x) so you can safely remove the tampered banner. So in our case you must use the 1.28.401.7 ruu.zip.

If your phone is S-ON you must relock the BL to flash a RUU. What will happen if you don't? SImple, the RUU won't flash. Just unlock the BL again after flashing the RUU.
I forgot to mention i have s-off. Can i flash the .exe ruu with an unlocked bootloader then? I just wondered why these files dont flash with an unlocked bootloader..

If your phone is S-OFF you don't need to relock the bootloader to flash a RUU (exe or zip).
When S-On you can only flash signed file and this signature verification can only be done by your phone with a locked (or relocked) bootloader hence the requirement to relock the BL if your phone is S-ON.

Both CID and MID must be compatible for the RUU. CID and MID can be changed with S-OFF.
You can also decrypt the RUU and change the android-info.txt file so it match your CID/MID

If your phone is S-OFF you don't need to relock the bootloader to flash a RUU (exe or zip).
When S-On you can only flash signed file and this signature verification can only be done by your phone with a locked (or relocked) bootloader hence the requirement to relock the BL if your phone is S-ON.

You said at post #4 your phone was S-OFF but your "fastboot-getvar all" output is clearly showing that your phone is S-ON. Not really a problem but you'll need to relock bootloader before flashing, just so you know.

The thing is in every post tat the bottom there is a tab that says says show hidden contents and there were some ruu links for htc one m7.Anyways, the thing is I brought my phone back to s-on as I was having a hard time finding the correct ruu for my phone and when you s-on the phone only the correct and latest ruu can be flushed .What I mean is that no wrong ruu can be flushed. But as soon as I s-on ed my phone ,I paniced as I was having a very hard time finding the latest ruu .So I posted the same things in both the threads in a panic which I am sorry for .I didn't know about that rule.Basiclly in this thread I wanted the latest ruu link for my phone. What I meant in the other thread was for someone to explain the version of my phone for the getvar all command so that I could identify my ruu easily.i was confused in many terms like "wwwe", .zip and .ruu. I will change my question in the other thread.
Anyways thanks for replying and giving the link.I just wanted to confirm that the link you provided will work for my indian edition ,right? Also, not that I am complaing but do you happen to know the link for the .ruu ( not the .zip) for the same? Thanks.

I understand what you mean but it's always a bad idea to go back S-On, it can even brick your phone in the some situations (I.e going back S-On with an unsigned bootloader will brick)

This ruu is the only one that should work on your phone now that it's back S-On. If this one doesn't work, you're SOL (because S-On).
Ruu are rarely available in exe file, most of them are zip file and they must be flashed using htc_fastboot.exe from a Windows pc with the phone booted in RUU mode:
Code:
htc_fastboot oem rebootRUU
htc_fastboot flash zip your_ruu_file_name.zip
htc_fastboot reboot
pl don t panic. it is easy
I showed you 4.4.3 but as my idea latest build is better than old

S-off
I can no longer s-off using rumrunner. I did some research and found that htc patched hboot 1.56 and above. The only solution i found is sunshine. ALso i found some posts saying that they were able to s-off by using custom roms with unsecure kernels and unsecure boot img. So just wanted to know whether they work for hboot 1.61 or do i use sunshine if i want to s-off again?
I mean is there even a slight chance that using unsecured kernels and boot imgs i can get s-off or are all of those posts lies?

You don't need s-off to flash the latest ruu version matching your cid/mid (the one linked in my last post), you only need s-off if you want to downgrade or if you want to convert your phone to another carrier/region version.
Only sunshine will hboot 1.57/1.61 security to off (s-off)
And FYI, "boot" = "kernel" these are not 2 different things
