Is 1.5gb of RAM enough? - Galaxy S5 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hope this isn't a dumb question. I am thinking of moving from my S2 (running custom 4.4.4 ROM) to the S5 mini, but I am wondering if 1.5gb is really enough RAM? On the S2, I had to repartition the 2gb to 4gb - though that was before I went from 4.1.2 to 4.4.x.

with the stock samsung android rom the ram is nearly full up to 85-90%....
but let's wait for root & CM. i think then it will be better with the ram usage

t think when ART becomes the default runtime, only 1.5gb RAM will really be a problem as it uses about 20% more than dalvik. If I were in charge at Samsung I'd have made the S5 with 3gb, the S5 mini with 2gb, and given the Alpha an sdcard slot. I hate how they keep micro-fragmenting their offerings. On that one issue, they could take a big lesson from Apple (boooo hissss).

[Q] Galaxy S I9000 really have 512M RAM?

I read the i9000 cpu c111A datasheet,
c111A include 4Gb NAND + 3Gb DDR + 1Gb OneNAND.
it's means 384M ddr + 128M OneNAND.
why everyone says:512M RAM?
what's the OneNand?
Samsung says 512MB RAM. Where'd you hear it has OneNand?
I doubt Samsung would confuse Nand and RAM.
from here:
/attachment.php?attachmentid=403851&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1284870007
There are already few threads about this issue. No one really knows exactly how much actual RAM there is for programs. There are conflicting reports, for example Samsung themselves say there is 384MB of RAM in Fascinate (Galaxy S for Verizon US), and then in some of their other Galaxy S variants they say 512MB of RAM. For me it seems like 384MB is what is actually available for programs (since Android OS is reporting 384MB, and so far no firmware has reported anything above that), rest is either used by the system or hardware devices (GPU perhaps ??).
It has 512mb of ram. 128mb is set aside for ram disk purposes (Lord knows why). The other 64~ is probably reserved for telephony.
I think a major portion of the ram is dedicated for video ram. and of course dma buffers for camera and other hardware sensors or components (GPS, radio etc)
so...we can at the most expect around 360megs available at most in any rom to come.
It's advertised with 512mb of RAM so why not? The rest of the RAM you don't get to use it probably reserved by the system. What would be the point in having a phone that doesn't phone someone cause your low on RAM.

THat's the rumor on the epic 4G, but did anyone actually determine it was the same on the galaxy S?
Yeah, there was a thread on the development board where RyanZA and others went through some of the code and found some similarities between the two.

Which phone would you recommend?

Hello friends!
I had a Samsung Galaxy Ace which I recently sold and now want to upgrade. Problem is that I am stuck with a few and am not able to decide which one should I go for.
1. Samsung Galaxy S I9000: This phone has the best screen in the lot but only 340 MB usable RAM (Balance is reserved for the system). Has 16 GB internal memory and 2 GB ROM. Moreover, I read some where that Samsung will stop providing updates for this phone very soon.
2. Samsung Galaxy SL I9003: This has a good 4 inch screen but not as good as I9000. Got 478 MB Usable RAM but only 4 GB internal memory and 1 GB ROM. Pice is a little less than I9000. Is it better than I9000?
3. HTC Desire S: Good 768 MB RAM, 1 GB ROM but unfortunately has only 3.7 inch screen. Undoubtly built quailty is the best but is also a bit costilier than the rest.
4. LP OPtimus 2X: Best processor, 1 GB ROM, 512 RAM but cheap built quality and not that very attractive. Screen below I9000 and still costilier than I9000.
5. Dell Venue: 4.1 inch screen, 1 GB ROM, 512 MB RAM but nothing special that stands out.
The problem is that I belong to a small place and so cant get a hand on to any of these mobiles, else I would have tested them myself. I just have your word for it. So please recommend me which is the one I should jump for.
Thank you.
Why did u miss ?
GALAXY S 2 .... Go for it ...
There are new did phones coming out with samoled screens, I wouldn't worry about 340 mb of ram, that is perfectly fine for a phone, ram is meant to be used.
Cyanogen mod on this phone is amazing and android is great with memory management. Android is not like windows and can run perfect even with 20 mb free.
Right now I have 135 mb free and DO NOT use a memory or app killer.

+1 to that !!
memory isnt such a big deal for android, however storage space is a big deal for the user... the SGS 1 has plenty of internal storage and an external sd card for that little extra if needed.
there are some fantastic ROMs and tweaks for this phone at the moment and its running superb to how it was 6 months ago. it can still keep up with whatever you throw at it.
the screen is the USP its unbeatable for me. and 2.3.3 just been released too so thats also a thumbs up .
but..... if i could afford it, i would go for the SGS 2
i may be saying that because i have had the SGS 1 for 6 months and would like a change, but on the other hand there is not AS much support for the SGS 2 YET, but im sure there will be when more developers upgrade to it.
either way, i would recommend you get a SGS whether it be 1 or 2 you wont regret the decision
Thanks guys... As of now I cant afford SGS 2. BTW, are you sure the updates would continue with SGS I9000? Moreover, which would be better amongst Galaxy S I9000 (16GB) @ $450 or Galaxy SL I9003 (4GB) @ $390?

important question

on the specs, it says GS1 has 512mb of RAM. I know android OS takes space phone it self blah blah so we only get to use 3xx mb of RAM. but then usually half (if not more) of the 3xx mb of RAM is already filled!
before, (back in eclair & froyo days) android 2.3 will allow us to utilize ALL 512mb but ****, now even more RAM is in use..
also
someone told me Nexus S who has exact same specs as GS, can use ALL 512mb...
so is there a way to use all 512mb of RAM? or at least more than 329mb?

You do use all the RAM, Android users shouldn't be worried about RAM as it is good to be used... Now Samsung's excuse for updating the GS1 to ICS is bull. but the reason you get 329 MB of RAM is because that 183 MB of RAM is for the system and cannot be given to the user. There are some kernels that offer like 344 MB of RAM(for Froyo), but that is it. No more, no less. Can't change it! Sorry bud.
Edit- we always are utilizing all 512 MB of RAM always. And when half of it is filled, that is always going to be there if the phone is turned on as some none system apps and system apps cannot be closed and are needed for the device to function.
I just recently got myself a Samsung Infuse, really like the phone. One thing that really bugs me is that it appears to be the same as my captivate in terms of RAM and ROM space, yet on my Infuse i get access to 452MB RAM yet on my captivate as stated we only get access to 329MB or 344MB.
Why such the huge difference?

RAM

Got my Galaxy Note and am loving it! It's model N7000. When I look at RAM usage it's always at 600+/800. Is there a reason it uses so muc memory? And isn't the phone supposed to have 1024MB of RAM?
the rest of the memory is used for apps, cache, rom etc etc.
i wouldnt worry, if you have 600meg showing then youre doing well considering after installing a lot of stuff you usually end up with 300meg plus showing, either way, its not an issue, theres still more than enough there and you really dont need to worry.
TouchWiz steals 200MB of your RAM at startup, so that leaves you with 800MB of free ram for apps and widgets and whatnot..
The same happens with HTC phones, it takes a certain amount of RAM to run Sense on.
My Note also uses 600+ RAM most of the time, it's pretty normal with some apps running. Nothing to worry about though. You've got enough of it anyways.
I'd be worried if 1GB of RAM wouldn't be enough for most of us. But it's plenty.

[Q] Memory usage versus the S5?

So I'm not well versed in the amount of memory certain functions should take up, but what I have noticed is that the S6 is supposed to have 3G ram right?
Well on my S5 I would have around 1k-1.2k ram unused on average when I would check. The S5 had 2gb of ram and had around conservatively 1000mb free from my experience. So if the S6 has an entire GB more, why am I constantly at ~800 ram free. What is that extra ~1.2k being taking up by the system that's so significant in difference from the S5?
If this has already been answered then apologies but I've been looking around for a while and I haven't come across an explanation yet

I've wondered about this as well, theoretically with the extra 1gb of ram, the s6 should have more free time available, but I've noticed that the s6 with 3gb vs 2gb on the s5 has less free ram available.. I want to know what's using that extra gb of ram as well?

It's all to do with the way Android works. Android LIKES to fill your RAM up as much as it can. This is the reason why RAM killer apps don't work and end up doing more harm than good. Usually end up wasting more battery because as soon as you clear the ram the OS is just going to go and fill it up again a few minute later.
Ram management has been very good since ice cream sandwich (except for the memory leak on 5.0.2) Just let it do it's thing. And as H3adru5H said don't use app killers anymore, this isn't gingerbread.

Right, from what I understand as long as you have an acceptable amount available, ie apps aren't FCing/dying in the background, the amount of free ram is fairly irrelevant. Not really worried so much as curious :cyclops:
I'm looking around on google, so again I won't be offended if you're too busy to answer, I like solving things on my own but I'm a giant noob
Would that mean that the extra ~1gb being taken up on the S6 is just extra optimization of the phone that manages itself and I shouldn't take notice of it?
Also, you said don't use app killer apps cause they tend to do more harm than good. What about opening up non system apps that use data and what not, some still seem to be listed in memory after closing them in the TW tasks menu which is what I've been using the app killer for. I have an ignore list with system stuff and just about everything that stays open anyway on it. Does android manage the closed apps' memory automatically now or something?
Thanks
edit: I use greenify anyway so I guess it's kind of redundant to be killing off the apps I have set to hibernate /derp. I just hate things lingering in the background doing nothing so anytime I can avoid that I try to
