Hi all I recently tried updating the FW on my xz but when it restarted, it said that it failed to install. I tried to install it twice but failed both times.
The bootloader has not been unlocked. And the phone has been rooted.
Can I update using the pc companion?
Thanks for your help

Yes try pc companion or update service.

Thanks! Only tried the OTA update since I'm not at home.
Will give the pc companion a try later.

Sorry, I'm new to all this android flashing since this is my first Android device (came from ios)
If I download a 434 FTF and flash it, will I lose all my apps and app data?
And can I flash in recovery, or can FTF files only be flashed using flashtool?

You can't flash FTF files through recovery. Using the flash tool you can keep data and settings or you can wipe them if you wish.
Awesome! Thanks for the swift replies guys. Will give it another try on updating later

Update .434
Hi
I have seen this update on the SOny website but my phone (C6603) will not recognise the update, I have tried PC companion and the web route and no luck. Can anyone advise or help to establish why I have not received the update OTA also?

Probably region specific. I saw a post about it last week regarding 434 being pushed to some devices. But I only got it today. Maybe just wait a few more days!

Strange! Other people are complaining because they still haven't got the update. My Xperia Z (C6602) got the notification for the latest OTA update for 10.3.1.A.0.244 via the update centre app. I downloaded the update and pressed install, and the phone shut down, and installation started, but then it stopped 1 min after installing, the phone rebooted and I got a notification "could not install". What's happening?
My phone is not rooted. OTA update to 10.1.1.A.1.253 worked previously. Any ways to fix this problem?
The internet connection at my current location is not stable enough to use PC Companion or Sony Update Service. It would also take the whole day to download the whole ftf file. (Max download speed is 40 KB/s! ) Can anyone think of any alternative ways please? Thanks in advance.
P.S., I found a similar tread in Xperia J forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44735001#post44735001), but no solution to the problem.

I believe the OTA update will fail if any of the stock system apps are missing.
EDIT: See this thread for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2403613

None of the system apps are missing as my phone is not rooted. But, my local Sony Service installed a local font without rooting, that's the only change made. (I don't know how they did that, I just saw them running a .bat file from computer. They said this won't void the warranty.)

Got it like a week ago.
I bought the phone unlocked just over a week ago and updated it straight away to .245.
Have you tried using 'SUS' rather than PC Companion?

I loaded PC Companion and it said .257 was the latest. I then rooted and loaded a custom ROM based on .245 then tried PC Companion again and it said a new update was available and listed .245.

Sony seem to control their updates by "SI" number (have a look under the back panel of your phone for your 'original' one). The SI number relates to a specific market, i.e. factory unlocked UK, EE UK, Vodafone UK, etc. will all have different SI numbers and all get updates at different times.
The reason you have an update available now where you didn't previously is because the custom ROM you flashed has a different SI number than your original phone came with -- you can verify this by checking your SI number against the one in your build.prop file on the line "ro.semc.version.cust".

Which is different to mine (a factory unlocked UK device). Your choices now are to either wait until your carrier has signed off the latest firmware, at which point the update will show up in SUS and probably on PC Companion too, or you can take matters in to your own hands...
Im livin in germany and I was also on 257 and sus and system said, that Im up to date (o2 provider).
So I decided, to flash the 245 fw manually with the flashtool via pc, cause I didnt want to wait.

Hi,
I'm kind of lost right now, there's an update 14.2.A.1.136, that started rolling out in 30/01/2014, but until now my phone still on 14.2.A.0.290.
I just want to know if there's a way to test if an update is available in my country or not.
Second question is, if i root my phone, i can have the official updates ?
Try it with the PC Companion
Gesendet von meinem C6903 mit Tapatalk
Well, that was an obvious answer, that's the main problem, pc companion doesn't show that i can update, i tried sony update service, but nothing.
It wasn't my question, i asked about the availability of the update in my country.
You didn't say where you are for starters mate.
Just use flashtool.

It was an obvious answer because it the correct answer. If PCCompanion does not give you an update then your country/carrier has not received the update yet.
"How to know if a new official firmware is released?" The answer is, you see it on PCCompanion.
Not always. Try PC companion, SUS and ota. I have run into instances where PC companion shows nothing but SUS updates the device.

Many many thanks !!!! this is the answer i wanted, btw, no carrier here (Morocco) has the Xperia Z1, a friend of mine bough it, all i remember is that it had a lot of vodafone stuff in it, but it did updates until the 14.2.A.0.290, so i guess it's related to its origin country.
Hi my xperia Z1 has still not updated or given me any notifications. I connected it to PC and checked with sony PC Companion but it is still saying that my phone is updated with the latest version. What should I do?
Thank you
Matt
Which country do you live? And which provider are you on? Do you have a branded or unbranded device? Which model of Z1 do you have( for example: mine is c6903)? Is PC Companion updated to the latest version? As you can read there are many possible factors why your device hasn't got the update yet! Updates are rolled out in phases! You can decide to wait or you can update via flashtool( flash a ftf, no root needed)

Hi there and thanks for reply. To answer your questions, I happen to live in Malta in Europe, and my provider is Vodafone. The sony z1 is an original buy and branded. My model is also C6903. I will check if I happen to have the latest update of PC Companion. I actually prefer to wait some more rather than update manually. What do you recommend?

I would suggest you manual flashing, my girlfriends Z1 was same branded as mine (Polish orange), I was sick of waiting for update and flashed the global version on my own, she still didn't recieve 4.4.2 update.
I was also scared before flashing firmware, but now am cool n happy with kitkat, imma give you link to my thread about flashing it(am also total noob when comes about phones), its easy-peasy.

Sorry I meant to say, why not just flash a custom ftf, or a stock 4.4.2, bypass the official way of updating

Yep, I agree with that, he should not wait for the Official one but just use Flashtool and flash the Latest or Custom FTF..
