[Q] Trouble with the Z1s 4.4 update - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
I had my Z1s rooted and decided to do the upgrade to Kit Kat. Download went well but on reboot it went into Recovery. I chose reboot system which started the phone but made me loose root while not upgrading me.
I downloaded Kit Kat again with the same thing going on and it happened a 3rd time. Upon opening my screen after every attempt I have the error message that the update could not install and that I need to try again.
Not sure what to do now as I have an unrooted 4.3 phone now that is not allowing the update.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Doc

OTA update?
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Free mobile app

Yes, I tried doing it OTA instead of computer.
Also, I have noticed that I have the "fail notice" stuck in notice bar even on reboot.

OTA update will not work if you are rooted and/or have custom recovery.
You can only use pc
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Free mobile app

Didn't know that. Will do.
Should I re root first or root after update? I have SuperSu Pro which should allow me to keep root on upgrade.
Thanks

How did you get root on that phone at all? I have z1s C6916 and I can't achieve root if my life depended on it.
What root exploit did you use?
Thanks in advance.

I used the Jcase method posted here in the forum. The main thing is to make sure USB debugging is turned on.

USB Debugging was on. Just wondering also, do you have the Xperia z1s C6916 version? Maybe you have a different version and that's why you were able to achieve root and I am not.
Sent from my C6916 using Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2

I have the C6916 which T-Mobile sells. Don't know why the method doesn't work for you.

About root, I don't know will root will still remain after update (probably not)
And also don't know if newest one is rootable.

From what I have read root can remain using SuperSu Pro. There is also a method of rooting after the update listed here in the forums.

Please help! Moto x

Hello XDA. A couple weeks ago I accidentally rooted my moto x via pwnmymoto. Accidentally because I installed the app, but didn't press setup. But then while I was in the app my phone rebooted, then again, then again. But then I got root checker and it said I have proper root access. USC is going to be having kit kat OTA soon. Basically I'm just wondering what I should do. I'd like to unroot before kit kat comes but the only way I've seen so far is by using fastboot and reinstalling stock via computer. Please let me know what I should do and if there is any easier way to unroot.

you can just restore the stock recovery and the OTA will overwrite the root unless of course you've removed any system files or apps, in which case OTA will fail.
You can restore the stock recovery in fastboot.

Try putting it in your LG backup file I think when I was trying that route, that's where I saw it

Noob question. I am on the 4.4.2 LS995ZV6 version of a GSM unlocked Sprint Flex. My device has just downloaded an update without my consent which. I believe is this. I am rooted by the way. Can I take this the update downloaded on my phone? Will I lose the unlocking status? Will taking the update on a rooted phone create any problems? Please let me know.
I don't think you will be able to properly take the update of your rooted. Also if it does you will lose root and you have to reroot (easy peasy)
If locked. Just look for the guide to sim unlock and delete few stock and (root first) then you will be fine

Android L keyboard

Hey all. Just seen an article about getting the new L keyboard on any kit kat or newer devices. It does however require root. I'm not willing to root until the bootloader issue is fixed.
Will all these neccesary steps be possible with abd over USB, I have used adb but only for updating my HTC one so not an expert by any means.
Steps to Install Android 5.0 Keyboard on Any Device Running KitKat or Jellybean
Download and Install a root explorer app such as ES File Explorer app (download here).Go ahead and install*Android 5.0 Keyboard APK*from the download link above.Browse to*/system/lib*directory on your phone and rename thelibjni_latinimegoogle.so*file tolibjni_latinimegoogle.so.bak, using a file explorer app of your choice. Ensure the file permissions are set to rw-r--r--.
Note:This is to ensure that you backup the current .so file before replacing it with the new version in next step.
Copy the new libjni_latinimegoogle.so file you downloaded earlier to the /system/file directory on your phone. You can now try launching the newly installed keyboard and check its functionality. If it fails to launch, just reboot the device once and it should work.
Cheers guys

Really? I said the bootloader issue. It's an issue that you have to unlock the bootloader and effectively remove warranty for root. That's an issue for some for us. It may not be for you, but it's a fair reason to wait for an exploit.
Do any of you know the answer to the question?

The wording made it seem to me like it was a bug that Sony is working to be fixed.

Yeah I just found a working copy here http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/lollipop-keyboard-phones-root-t2910268. Tried a couple along the way that didnt work though also.
Cheers for the heads up!

ReRoot possible. On 4.4.4, installed update, lost root.

I meant reroot possible? It was a question. Accidentally out a period on the end.
Newbie mistakenly installed update and lost root.
I was already on 4.4.4 rooted. Received an update notification from AT&T. I pressed on update. Everything came back up but lost root. I'm I able to root without going back to 4.4.2?
Thanks in advance.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Free mobile app
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the only way to root 4.4.4 is to go back to 4.4.2 and then follow the 4.4.4 root upgrade guide posted in I believe the general section it's actually pretty easy but does make it harder to use safestrap if you use that very often.
It's easy but unfortunately to resetup my phone is very time consuming.
I spent a lot of time removing apps, adding apps and configuring.

Thanks. That's the procedure I used to get my phone rooted to 4.4.4. Like I mention, I was already rooted with 4.4.4 and installed a OTA update which unrooted my phone. At the moment, it sounds like I have to lose all the work I've done on my phone and start over unless I'm missing something.

+1 for OC2, I mean all, I, am, seeing is Downgrade options to 4.4 KitKat then towel root then Safestrap then flash slotted Updated Lollipop Rom? All, I want is to remove bloat and use exposed, is there a root for OC2? Without downgrading thanks
Here's the video for downgrading and rooting. Then after that you can use any of the builds available. I'm using Alliance v12. Works like a charm,I almost gave up on my phone and was about to buy a new one. After downgrading to NC2,rooted and the pushing in Alliance 12 it's back. Thank you community.

So you downgraded to NC2 which I'm assuming is 4.4.2 becuase Im on NJ5, downgraded to NC2 or Jellybean I think and rooted with towel root and installed safestrap via the instructions, but when I try to reboot into Safestrap after installing and it installs, I grant it Superuser, and click Reboot to Recovery and nothing happens, any ideas? Becuase I need Safestrap, so I can flash Alliance, or Backup or anything else, but there are SO MANY conflicting OP's, regaurding Safestrap "it abandoned", "it only works on 4.2.2", "there's a work around for Safestrap on 4.4.4, by flashing Kitcat Kernal" "or Safestrap will work on on OC1 also with correct kernel"
All I want is to be on the "LATEST FIRMWARE FOR THIS PHONE, THAT WILL ALLOW ME TO EFFECTIVELY USE SAFESTRAP, TO BACK UP, FLASH, AND RUN ALLIANCE ETC..."
IF that means being someone a beer, I'm cool with that, been around here for awhile and had many Samsung phone Notes One, Two, S3, S4, but never had to deal with this bootloader crap, just so frustrated at this point[emoji726]

Did you install busybox before installing safestrap?
Sent from my DROID Turbo using XDA-Developers mobile app
Yeah I'm pretty sure I did I mean I have Busy box installed of course, and Safestrap, and I'm not sure in what order, however if Busy box was causing the issue, then Safestrap would not install at all, right? But yes now that I remember, when I got this phone it was already updated to OC1 (at that time the latest build) after try to sift through all the different out dated tutorials, I finally just did what I mentioned above, but Safestrap "Installs fine", "Allows me to grant SU", then "allows me to (click)" reboot to recovery" then FAIL.... nothing happens, on NJ5, I know Safestrap ended development at some point, and don't you also have to flash a certain kernel in order for SS to work on KK? So Confused
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A
You need to install Busybox, then open busybox and tell it to install it into the system
Then open safestrap and do likewise.
I did this on nc2 no idea how it'll work on an older version.

so mrkhigh, thank you by the way first! off, to your response, so as far as you know "Safestrap" did not require any additional steps, to work on 4.3, like an updated kernel, which I know makes no sense to me eithier, other than the permission changes that occured at the true root level on NJ5 Update, and SafeStrap itself not being a true recovery, in the word of true TWRP, per this pain in my @$$ bootloader, which I have already made knowen in this community, AND others, is simply a loophole, to the "right to modify" ruling by the FTC some years back, if you will to the carriers, at&fee included among others
