Root not working? - Mi 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i have a new Mi3 WCDMA lastest dev rom which i rooted via security/ permission/root.. But it seems it's not working prorpely..
With ES explorer when i enable root feature, it ask me for root right, (which is ok) then i go to mount and mount / and /system to RW
but now when i try to put a new font (for apple emoji) into /system/font, it tells me that it's read-only .. I tried with other app than ES explorer but same result ..
So my question is, is that normal ? How do i root it proprely ? Or at least how do i get Apple emoji ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563757 : This method didn't work as said here..
and App from playstore like Emoji changer (root) didn't work either..

have u try wsm tool?.. i use it with theme authorisation module.. then ifont install font.. if not answering your question, im sorry.. anyone here will help u..

Actually i don't need font installer or something like that, i just want iPhone emoji in my google keyboard but normaly to do that you have to have root then with the app "Emoji changer" or by putting the correct file in /system/fonts, you have these emoji..
seems root working fine because i installed Adaway and it working proprely, it's just that i can't change file in /system/fonts because of read-only thing..
So my question was more about is there an other way to have iPhone Emoji or did i do something wrong with my way to do it ..

[Q] broke my home haptic

I am running GR-11 and liking it....but I recently uploaded an i9000 theme for JVB roms and it seems to have broken my home haptic feedback. Is there any way to fix this without reflashing...preferably with a CWM zip?

Grab the android policy jar from your rom zip and use root explorer to put it in your system/framework folder and over write the old one. You must be careful flashing themes as the roms are very modded and if the theme doesnt have the mods then you will lose functions like the feedback
Trying to use astro and it doesn't allow me to copy/paste anything into system/framework...never has, although my system is mounted rw thru SGS toolbox...ill have to try another file manager i guess. unless there is something about astro im not aware of. What i've heard/read is that the only difference in the pro version is its ad-free. Is that true?

From what I understand Astro will not work as it doesnt have the ability to edit root files. I use Root Explorer and not sure about astro
Thanks for your help but I tried es/file explorer and file expert but neither actually worked....weird? Guess ill just wait for the actual GR release as I am very pleased with my current version.

you need to mount the system folder r/w outside of astro before you edit anything. you can use terminal emulator for that but you might as well use adb for everything. atleast then you mave a big screen and a keyboard. you can also buy root explorer which lets you mount folders r/w in the app, it is one of the few apps that are worth it for root users.

Supermanager mounts RW and is free
This helped me a lot because no ammount of adb shell commands would get my /system to RW
...Root Explorer got me where I needed to be and now my home haptic is back, thanks !

SIM Toolkit for ICSSGS

Dear all,
I am desperately looking for a STK.apk from the ICS SDK.
I am currently unable to install the sdk since I have no access to a computer right now.
Can someone please post a link to the latest stk.apk?
Sent from my I9000 using XDA App
Edit:
I have found another STK.apk than the one from post 3. The latter one has been extracted from OneCosmic's ICS Beta 1. It works fine for me as well. Apparently my Dual SIM adapter does not need all functions of STK, so it may not work for sending provider codes.
Anyone who is able to use the attached STK with provider codes, please provide feedback for others.

mmeeetooo i need it plzzzzz
Success
To all it may concern:
I downloaded the STP.apk (SIM ToolKit) from the ICS Apps Dump , copied the apk to "system/app" and changed the permissions to Owner: RW, Group: R, Others: R
To do so, use any Root Explorer app.
As I am not yet allowed to paste links, please PM me if you want me to sent it to you.
Works like a charm now...
Steps:
1. Download 'stk.apk' and copy it somewhere on your phone
2. Move it to '/system/app' with a root enabled file manager
3. Change the permissions as described above
4. Reboot
F.y.i.: Root does not work on my ES File Explorer.
I use 'File Manager HD', cause it's easy to use and it is free.
Dont forget to enable root in the settings.
Permissions can be changed by long press on the file.

Well I am on Onecosmics great RC1 with "updated" kernel, which is also 4.0.3 and it works perfect. It works even better than on GB.
I am using a dual SIM adapter which needs STK to switch between SIMs. On GB Stock, the process crashed from time to time and I had to restart the phone in order to be able to switch SIMs. Now, I doesn't crash anymore.
- Did you copy the file with a root-enabled explorer and assign the correct permissions?
- Do you have any radio related issues on your ICS installation? (e.g. incoming/outgoing calls working, no mobile data issues etc.)
I did all the things above, can't instal it....
Need other version of stk.apk?
Greetz
I don't think that you need another version, since this one is from the ICS System App Dump and it works perfect with 4.03
Do you receive any FCs on the Phone process? Can you copy stk.apk to system/app ? Did you check permissions (i.e. rw-r--r--)? Is the stk.apk still in the correct folder after reboot? Did you reboot?
A detailed description of what happens would be an asset if you want help.
I did everything as described here. Seems that app somehow works, but something isn't like it should be. My confirmation through stk doesnt reach back to server I guess.
STK depends on RIL!

I'm not surprised... this is the same behavior I saw on CyanogenMod 7.
SIM Toolkit is heavily dependent on the Radio Interface Layer (RIL) implementation. As I understand it, the RIL is the hardware/software component which interacts with the phone's modem/baseband in order to call, SMS, 3G, etc. SIM Toolkit and USSD codes are all dependent on separate functions in the hardware, and the software layer must also implement hooks for them to work properly. The original poster's SIM switching gadget might work because the functions it relies on are implemented, while the ones we need are not.
Also, I've noticed that certain operations work on Onecosmic's ICS which don't work on Teamhacksung's, such as *522#, my bank's mobile interface. STK has only ever worked for me on Samsung stock ROMs.
More info about Android's RIL software and how it interacts with the hardware: http://www.netmite.com/android/mydroid/development/pdk/docs/telephony.html
Thanks aorth, for this detailed insight.
So I must consider myself as a 'lucky guy'.
Could the issue be fixed by using or porting a Nexus S modem?
Sent from my I9000 using XDA App
Damn, it won't wok properly then?!
Thx, and I'll keep hoping
I did everything in the steps. It's installed. I can't seem to find it in the app drawer. Nothing in my app drawer is hidden. So, since i can't find it. I can't run it.
Solutions?
Hi, with 'installed' , do you mean 'copied to \system\app' with correct permissions and still there after reboot ?

not sure if this is the right place to ask but has anyone had an issue while on a call the only way yo talk to the person is either on bluetooth or speaker? btw using kernel that came with rc3plus

You must be root and you need a file manager with root access.
c.f. instructions on first page, post #3.
If you are not used to do this kind of stuff, be cautious and follow the instructions step by step. PM me, if you are unsure.
Do it at your own risk. I am not responsible for whatever could be the consequences of your doing.
I've just downloaded and followed the instructions for installation at post #3 and it worked fine! I'm using Onecosmic's ICS RC3.1 in my SGS.
Thanks...

What exactly does not work? Do you have working root access?
If you are not able to copy the files to the specified location, then either your root is not working or you have not enabled it correctly.
In the app I mentioned, you must do the following:
- start 'file manager'
- press left button and select 'settings' from the context menu
- tick 'Root Explorer' and 'Mount system writeable' checkboxes
- allow the app root access whenever asked...

[Q] How to tell if I have proper root?

The way I rooted my phone, or I think I did, is by flashing this prerooted rom version KKA made by this guy you all know of. Forgot his name.
Anyhow, that is how I have cwm 5.3 and was able to install ICS roms and now MIUI.
So right now im running MIUI, not relevant, but I have superuser app, and I can give root permission to some other apps when they ask.
What my problem is, using root browser and astro manager/browser, I can't add a folder in /data/systems/theme.
Someone mentioned that I might not have proper root (and this got me all confused because all this time I thought I had proper root)
How is it possible that I may not have proper root after being able to install custom roms and have superuser app and etc?
How can I tell if I do have proper root or not?
(GOSH IM SUCH A NOOB I DONNNO JACKKK)
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

Download an app from market its call root checker... And as the name says, it does the same job... You already said that you see su icon in app drawer so check with this app.... Comment above as well is a sound advice!!

Most ROMS come preinstalled with terminal emulator so do this.
1. Open terminal and type "su" (All of this without quotes of course)
2. type "pm install /path/to/blahblahblah.apk

Makesure that 'Unknown Sources' is set to 'Allow' non-Market Apps...
Using the builtin brower, in the address bar:
file:///sdcard/Name_of_APK.apk sdcard=full path to your desired APK mind the case and the "/"s
I have the APKs on the microSD that I use for flashing, and I've shortened the names so it easier to type.
First one being a file manager of some sort.

Normally u cant install system apps and u have to set permission and then restart ur device
As far for the permission, press the stk.apk and a options menu will appear. Then click on permission button then refer to this image:
i use cm file manager and activated the root access mode
noob question... how to post the screen shot of my phone? i wanna post the checked permission and the result
