I believe all variants of Moto X work.

Have you tried the development forums? Probably a good place to start.

There are over clock kernel modules available for the HTC one xl with also uses the msm8960 krait processor. Someone who is rooted with system write protection turned off could give it a try. I don't have my moto x yet.

Why not? Someone out there might be interested. Personally I would be interested in undercloking and undervolting.

Are suggesting flashing another manufactures kernel on our moto?
Could result in a hard brick
When you receive your brand new moto, flash the kernel and tell us all what happens.
The moto doesn't need to be over or under clocked

It is a kernel module. Not a kernel. I take it that you either didn't read or don't know what that means. Good try on trying to make me sound stupid. Moving on....
Background: Just received my Moto X yesterday (Ebony back, black front, silver trim, SEXY!!!). I'm coming from a Droid 4 (tired of waiting on Droid 5) and I'm hoping you guys can help point me in the right direction by answering a few general questions for me. I've browsed through some of the forums already but since the Moto X has been out a little while now there is a LOT to wade through. So....
1. What is the current state of root on the Moto X? The last I saw there is not an easy root method for Moto X on KitKat. Is that still true?
2. On my D4 we did not really have options when it come to recoveries. It was safestrap, which is great, but that was it. I think I saw a safestrap for Moto X thread somewhere but are there other recoveries like TWRP or CWM available?
3. Probably a stupid questions but what is the difference between the "Moto X Android Development" forum and the "Moto X Original Android Development" forum?
Really love the XDA community and looking forward to getting started with my Moto X and finding ways to contribute. Thanks!
Read through the dev sections ....and all will be revealed.

Not afraid of a little reading. Just trying to figure out where to start. Can you at least clarify what the difference is between the "Android Development" and "Original Android Development" sections?

OK, So I have read through a whole bunch of stuff now and I think I have root figured out. What I cannot seem to figure it out is the recovery situation. All the recoveries I see are for "Recovery Unlocked" or "Unlocked Bootloader" devices. I just have a plain old non-dev edition Moto X. Are there no compatible recoveries for regular non-dev edition Moto Xs?

You need an unlocked bootloader to use custom recoveries. But it isn't just dev edition that can be unlocked.
If you can't or don't want to unlock your bootloader (which voids your warranty), then you can't use a custom recovery.
You can still root....but no custom recovery. Which means no flashing from recovery...since stock doesn't flash.
Again....this is all in the dev section....and Google can help you find this stuff too.
I can't help further, I'm not an expert at the unlocked bootloader root stuff, as I unlocked my bootloader on day one.

You have to unlock the boot loader at Motorola's website. That way they know and your warranty is void. Lol

QUESTION ANSWERED
I'm unable to install apps from the play store. Tapping install just freezes the play store. I can barely even browse the play store or do anything. Factory reset isn't helping and so far all I've done is unlock bootloader and fastboot boot pure2014sb.zip
What can I do?
Thanks
PS: Does anyone know which firmware on this page is for the US Pure Edition phone? https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images
Try deleting your Google account and clearing the play services cache and data. Then log back in.
Thanks but I already tried that plus factory resetting. I think the pure2014 screwed it up. I need to find out which stock image is the correct one for the pure edition

Ok. How can I tell the difference between the GSM 2014 model and the GSM Dev Edition from 2013?
I just want to make sure 1000% that I don't flash the wrong firmware on a brand new device.
Thanks

As far as I can tell they're the same. I couldn't find separate sites for them. On my build I have KXE21 and this one has KXA21. I dont think there is any difference, but im not 100%. There's a rooted image on the android Dev section with the E21.

So it looks like those file names are different once Motorola finally shares them with you. They are all for ghost, which if memory serves me correctly is the 2013 model.

Could be. Odd that Motorola would give you the wrong images. This zip has all the moto x 2014 images.

Do not flash the images listed on their site yet. The Moto X 2014 images haven't been uploaded on their website yet, Motorola has posted on their forums that their working on it though.

Thanks for the warning. Owning a first gen model, I thought those firmware names looked a little familiar. Motorola's support is extremely lacking this year save for one nice person who talks to /r/MotoX on reddit. I wonder what happened to their support. So far 3 out of 3 support agents (1 chat, 2 phone call) have mistaken my questions about unlocked bootloaders for GSM locks, and had no idea what a bootloader is, until I explained it to them in severely layman's terms. For now I'm back on my first gen since I sadly need Verizon, and I also "need" the unlocked bootloader.
On the plus side before getting the RMA I did fix the issue. It was a bad root attempt. I skipped the pure2014 method and just used TWRP + flashing SuperSU as if it was a first gen. (second gen TWRP of course)
Thanks for all the help though.

This is the Moto G 2nd gen area, it would probably be best to ask in the Moto G threads. Take a look at the various threads in the below forum if you haven't already. There are quite a few on flashing 4.4.4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/development
And a thread about restoring stock firmware in the first thread of the General area.
