[Q] Samsung Gear S Smartwatch - a cell phone replacement? - Samsung Gear Live

I'm getting excited about the Samsung Gear S Smartwatch that was announced (due in Oct internationally). However, the Tizen OS concerns me a bit because I don't know much about it. What I'd like to do is replacement my smart phone entirely with it, but be able to tether my Wifi Android Table to it when I need the use of a larger form factor. I had a few questions I'm not sure if people already know, or will have to wait until the phone is fully out.
- Can the watch provide internet (via wifi tether) to a Wifi-only android tablet? I'm not sure if Tizen has to be rooted (or some such) to enable the capability.
- Will it be able to connect directly to a bluetooth headset without a smart phone?
- I use the low-cost carrier called PagePlus (operates using Verizon wireless towers). Will I be able to easily get it working on PagePlus as long as they offer one w/ CDMA or LTE?

Today's presentation said it needs to be connected to an approved Samsung phone for setup and to install apps. It will require its own phone plan, and it only does 3G, so even if you could tether it (which I doubt) IMO it would be very slow and kill the battery very fast.
Their current Tizen watches support a bluetooth headset, so this one will probably be able to as well.
Nothing was said about carriers, but I don't know how the required SIM card would work with a CDMA carrier anyway.

Tizen software may be a deal killer. I don't think many developers want to spend time on such minuscule market hardware from Samsung only.

It looks nice but Tizen? Even Sony is going with Android Wear.
For me a watch can never replace a cell phone.

Had an HD7 queued up until I read these threads

NO TETHERING
NO NAVIGATING
I really like/dislike my Samsung Vibrant. My HD2 was stolen and got the Vibrant on a temporary basis until the HD7 came out. Love the market place, hate the phone and the android service or whatever I had to switch my internet plan over to.
I cant stand roaming data charges. $30 a megabyte. Im pretty sure I wont get that with the HD7. Im a truck driver so I need tethering and navigating.
Is it possible for a tethering app in the future or is it a hardware thing?
It seems to be possible on the samsung phones, so it is possible. Cant say if itll happen on the hd7, but id bet its a matter of time before someone finds a way.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/11/windows-phone-7-usb-tethering-uncovered-on-samsung-phones/
they also got a lg wp7 phone to tether.
That will happen. As far as gps goes, bing navigation is supposed to be in the jan. 11 update.

[Q] Switch from htc arrive wp7 to Samsung Ativ wp8

Gotta switch but, I was wondering if 2 things are available in wp8 for sprint. 1- Is there any restriction for downloads and is there free Internet sharing. I realize this question is redundant but I keep getting different answers.
I can't speak for Sprint specifically, but in general...
The restrictions for downloads (I assume you mean things like "apps over 20MB must be downloaded over WiFi" or some such thing) should be the same as on WP7. In theory it's possible for us to override those restrictions, although I don't think anybody has yet written an app to do it.
The built-in "Internet Sharing" feature works exactly like it does on WP7. If your Arrive is allowed to do it, your Ativ S Neo will be too.
thanks
Let me explain. Sprint charges for WiFi hot spot usage. With Leads rom on my arrive I am able to use internet sharing for free. I guess my main concern about a switch is whether I can do this still for free. Thanks
If you don't see anything here, its because it hasn't been found yet. I'm trying to find the same for Verizon, but LTE has made a mess of things. The Android gurus won't help either...
I hope a internet sharing/hotspot solution is available for Sprint.
I'm eligible for upgrade March 1st, and was going to get the Ativ S Neo just for a change of pace. Been using Android for 3 or 4 years now, the last windows phone I had was a Touch Pro 2.
Not a deal breaker, but I do use hotspot fairly regularly to get around works firewall...
Some people are experimenting with partially-customized ROMs for the Ativ S (no idea if they've gotten to the Neo yet; it's relatively new). Those *might* support the kinds of changes needed for free tethering.
Alternatively, you may be able to use wired tethering for free via the Diagnosis app. I can (my plan includes tethering at no extra cost, but it is capped; when I use wired tethering it doesn't report any tethered data usage).

CDMA Tethering has changed these days. They have built in "entitlement checks" to see if your eligible for tethering. I went to one of the Verizon device threads and asked but no luck.
The device username is the only thing listed. On another note, Verizon's USB modems seem to talk directly through a Networking Adapter instead of a normal modem. Their VZManager might need looked at more.
Sprint might be different OTOH.

Samsung Pay: Voided Phone warranty, with Gear S2

I was curious, would we be able to use Samsung Pay on the Gear S2 if the device its connected with has a voided warranty? (i.e. rooted before).
Ill be getting the Gear S2, but have been holding off on rooting my phone to see how Samsung Pay really is.
I highly doubt it. The phone's Pay app is the host and the Gear's a client with a subset of functionality. It probably picks up the data it needs from the terminal and hands it off to the phone for processing. We'll know in October.

Logically. The watch only acts as an extension, its not a standalone unit. Unless you get the 3G model, then it might be a different story since its a standalone unit that doesn't depend on a host. Well if you think about it, Samsung said their payment will not work on devices with poped efuses, but they also said the Gear S2 can be setup and paired to other phones than samsung. The question is, do you need a samsung to get pay to work on the watch or will it just be an app you can download, or possibly integrated into the gear manager of the other phone...until we get more details from samsung, its only speculation

They pretty clearly said only a subset of features would be available on non-Samsung devices. I doubt Samsung Pay would make the cut. As it stands, mail, mms, and calendar only work with their Samsung host equivalents and that probably won't change. There are so many layers of security in the host app at the OS and h/w level I don't even see Samsung Pay being offered on non-Samsung devices having nothing to do with the Gear. They have opened up access to the SDK so third parties could access the NFC chip but, as a long time Gear owner, no one wants to write apps for a low volume product that runs Tizen. The dirth of apps is probably the biggest obstacle Samsung's wearables need to overcome. Unless it sells in the millions I don't see the Gear S2 changing that.

Urbane LTE 2nd Edition

So I decided to hold on to my Urbane LTE 2. Currently I'm a bit annoyed at the fact that the watch needs to be tethered to the phone albeit via wifi or over LTW, the phone needs to be online for all Google functions to be able to work. Annoying!
There is no proper whatsapp support that I could find. Whatsapp is a integral part of my daily communication. I think I use it more than making phone calls or texting.
I was wondering if there is any way to install a full Android system on the watch as has been done for the Gear S.
I would highly appreciate any tips and secrets etc. I love this watch and really want it to be a standalone and independent device. I do not want to carry my Note 5 with me anymore.
Thanks in advance,
F.

Old thread I know but did you ever get your watch worked out? I have my Urbane 2 and Note 5 working together as well as a Gear S and both need the Note 5 on and connected via at least LTE or wifi to work properly. I don't carry my Note 5 much on weekends as there's no need any longer with these two devices. 'ok google' works on the Urbane LTE gen 2 just fine when connected remotely.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't used my Urbane or Gear s in months since I'm using the Finow 3G. I would still love to be able to use the Urbane LTE 2 4G with full Android on it.

[guide] Would you like to Use an Apple Watch standalone with a Note 8?

You Can use an Apple Watch Series 3 (probably a Series 2 and earlier models as well) standalone with a Note 8 (S8/S8+ and maybe any Android Device?)!
[ Thanks to @spinedoc on Android Central for this idea!]
**Please, no flaming! I live in both Android and Apple World (as many do). Been loving Android off and on for years. Bored with iOS/iPhone for a couple years now. I do have a Gear S2 (and I wear that too, total geek, I know...) but I have yet to find a decent <= 40mm Android Capable SmartWatch. They are just too large on my wrist and Apple Watch 38mm is perfect so I bought a new Series 3. Apple Watch is behind in tech to me compared to some Android Watches but AW is very slick and really nice looking to me. Some people cannot afford both an Android Wear watch and an Apple Watch even though I believe Android Wear works on iPhone. I kept my iPhone to work on theming as it was jailbroken but isn't any longer due to upgrading to iOS 11. Also I help a lot of friends and family with their iPhone setups and problems so it's good for me to have an iPhone on hand as I follow along when helping them.
Of course not all of the features of the Apple Watch will work but many will! I haven't tried out all of them yet. Phone calls won't work.
You MUST Own an iPhone [for Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS) or earlier models of Apple Watch, you need an iPhone 5s or later with probably the latest iOS] in addition to your Android device and have Hotspot functionality on your cellular plan.
Here are the steps that I used (it is NOT necessary to initially have a SIM in your iPhone when setting up. I am using a Series 3 GPS Only Apple Watch with an older iPhone 6+ on iOS 11).
1) Turn on the Hotspot on your Android device (I'm using a Note 8).
2) Connect your iPhone’s wifi to the Android phone's Hotspot.
3) Your Apple Watch will access the internet using the wifi hotspot connection on your iPhone.
4) Now that you have “established” an authorized/known (can’t think of the word Apple uses) wifi connection you can leave the iPhone at home and either leave the hotspot running or turn it on when you need updates to certain apps on your watch!
5) Go into messages on your iPhone (especially when the SIM is NOT in it) and be sure you have an email address that is checked off to use with iMessage. I used iMessage seamlessly - with voice text entry…too small to type (of course there is no trail of the SMSs on your Android phone).
My weather updates, my mail comes in and I can respond. Haven’t tried anything else except Siri who told me the time but couldn’t answer a couple of questions about Apple Watch (just referred me to open the web on the iPhone). Remember that the functionality available on an Apple Watch is dependent upon what exists on your iPhone, not what's on your Android device.
Surprisingly, I didn't get much of a hit on the battery either in my Note 8 or on the Apple Watch when I left the Hotspot on. Not sure how much data was used but I get a 10GB/month hotspot on my AT&T plan so doubt I'll eat that up before the next bill comes out.
If you have an LTE version Apple Watch on AT&T then using NumberSync might not be that good of an idea. Check out this article on Android Central:

FYI this worked for me with a series 2, than means no cellular connection, I'll bet it works better with a series 3. Battery draw was higher on both the AW and the Note 8 (hotspot continuously on), but I still made it through a full day. Most of my stuff is on Google Voice, so all that worked perfectly and I got notifications on the AW and was able to respond. All the apps I tried which involved the phone seemed to work fine, for example the Ecobee app on the AW worked fine to adjust my Tstat at home. Apple pay worked perfectly as well. Siri didn't work when I tested, it said couldn't find my iPhone. iMessages can be tricky as mentioned above. The only thing that truly didn't work at all was making and receiving phone calls.

Thanks again @spinedoc for your initial information on that NumberSync article on Android Central. I posted this guide on the ATT forum and someone stated that even trying this was a hot mess! No way! Once you set it up that's it. It works really well with the series 3. You used ecobee, it works with liftmaster too.
I love the watch but I love my Note 8! So I do want to live in Both worlds.
If Android Wear comes out with a smaller watch I'll end up buying that too. Lol!

Say u turn your hotspot on , tether the iPhone to note 8 , leave the house but your iPhone loses connection to your note 8 because your out of range so it hooks onto your home router. Now you won’t get messages?? Think that’s the problem I had. It Did work when I left the iPhone in the vehicle, lost tethering so iPhone went to cellular data. Can anyone confirm?

I had my iPhone (no SIM in it) tethered to my Note 8 hotspot. At the same time the Apple Watch is automatically connected to the iPhone (which is still using the hotspot for internet connectivity).
Once the Apple Watch was connected it "established " a know WiFi connection so you can actually shut the iPhone down and the Apple Watch will connect to your Note 8 (or any previously connected hotspot which your iPhone was connected to).
So when I leave my house and my Apple Watch is out of range even with my home WiFi (you'll know when your watch has no connection as it will display a tiny red phone or something like that, at the top of the screen) I turn on my Hotspot right in the notification shade (which also turns off your N8 normal WiFi connection) and the Apple Watch connects automatically. That "not connected" icon disappears.
Now you will not receive any cell-related content. You'll get text messages Only from those using iMessage (but you can respond on your AW, I use voice dictation, so easy) your Note 8 texts will not appear on AW. You'll get email updates (if the email accounts existed on your iPhone), you'll get weather updates and can use wifi-connected light bulbs and garage doors etc. if they were all originally set up on your iPhone and if there is a corresponding AW app. Still lots of functionality!
I'm such a geeky goober that I have an Apple Watch on one wrist and a Gear S2 LTE on the other! Like jewelry to me.

I forgot to mention that this is the GPS Only Apple Watch.
Also, @vincey, are you trying to just tether your iPhone to your N8 hotspot (& not use an AW at all)?

Series 1
I tried it with my Series 1 Apple watch and I am not receiving messages.
Thanks for the great info everyone,
Have anyone had the chance to check the method with the series 4 ?
In terms of battery, will the watch last for a day using the hotspot ? Have anyone tried checking WhatsApp notifications ?
my son wants apple watch he does not have phone yet. he does have ipad. if i find an old beater iphone5 to set up the apple watch, he could do similar as you with note?
the apple watch would record exercise, would that sync back to apple health on wifi? i don’t see apple health app for ipad though.
could he use ipad to copy music to apple watch?
can he install games from ipad to watch?
plan b is fitbit versa
Is this still working? How long does your Apple Watch Series 3 last before it needs to be charged again when doing this?
I'm assuming WhatsApp messages sent to the iPhone will be received on the watch?

An Apple Watch can only be directly paired with an iPhone, not an iPad, and if it has watchOS 4 or later, then it can't be paired to an iPhone 5 or 5C, because they won't run anything newer than iOS 10, but as long as the watch has watchOS 3 or earlier, you can still pair it to a 5 or 5C. Otherwise, just get a 5S. If it's a cellular iPad and there's a SIM card in it, then he can do what the OP did with his Note 8, but he won't be able to sync or install anything on the watch using the iPad. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure a Fitbit can be paired to any phone, tablet or computer
