I got my Chromecast just a few weeks ago and I'm a Best Buy "Reward Zone" Member. Being a Reward Zone Member gives me up to 60 days to return purchased items back to the store....with a receipt, obviously. When I got mine, it was quickly automatically updated and I was never afforded the opportunity to root my Chromecast. Do ya'll think I can package my Chromecast back up and return it to Best Buy and purchase another one that is HOPEFULLY still running the original version that allows for it to be rooted? Basically what I'm wondering is if I return my Chromecast back to my local Best Buy retail store and buy another one, will the "newer" one that I pick up still be running the original system that they initially shipped with that enabled for users to root it? I'm asking because I really have wanted to root this thing, but just never have been able to, due to it receiving the automatic OTA shortly after using it for the first time a few weeks ago. I wouldn't think that the more recent Chromecasts would come shipped with the newer OTA's already, would they? I'm just hoping to pick up another one that I can actually root. Ya'lls thoughts?
Why?
The number of unrooted devices is truly tiny, so developers for it are fleetingly few. Also there's no significant advantage to being unrooted.
Couple that with the infetesimal chance of getting an original release device from Best Buy begs the effort.
I don't mean to be unduly negative but such little chance for such minor gain, again, why?

I think you mean "rooted"
Thank you, correct, rooted.
I think that if you can have a rooted chromecast, it's a good thing.
I do admit that at present there are no advantages to being rooted.
But the future is unknown.
Example : what if google decides to never permit the general developer casting apps like fling or allcast? Theoretically, developers can totally rewrite the chromecast firmware to be the device they want it to be. However it will be very difficult or impossible to install such new firmware on an unrooted chromecast.
So the only benefits are unknown future imaginative features which google may never allow.
I bought another Chromecast from BestBuy on Friday and it still had the original firmware. This BestBuy had been sold out of Chromecast already, so this was probably their second or third shipment. So it's definitely possible to get an original firmware Chromecast, although there is no guarantee.

I'm not for sure, likewise for anyone else, when Google will be shipping these devices with updated firmware, so I'm gonna take my chances and get another one soon. And the reasons mentioned in the above posts are the main driving factors for my decision. If I'm going to spend $35 of my hard earned money, I'm gonna get every penny out of it that I can. Being locked down like Google has us now, was not in my plans when I first bought this thing.

Well, guys...I did it today. I returned my Chromecast and switched it out for another one. I haven't hooked it up yet, but hopefully it's the original version.

You must not allow the chromecast to connect to a wifi ssid / network which has Internet.
In my case, I had an old asus (dd-wrt) router laying around. I powered it up with nothing plugged into it. No rj45 cat 5/6 cables connected. Switched my phone wifi to this wireless ssid network. Ran the chromecast app, it found the chromecast, set up the chromecast to use this no Internet network by selecting it & typing in the router's password. After setting up the chromecast, the app shows the firmware version as being 12072.
If you allow the chromecast to connect to a wifi network which has Internet, then it will quickly auto update to a firmware version which can not currently be rooted.

The rooted firmware bin files from tvall have the auto update function disabled.
I just got my Chromecast a couple of days ago and have been reading several threads. I connected it to WiFi with no Internet and found that it still has 12072. Is there any way ti still use Allcast or Fling if I use one of tvall's images to disable updates? I found a previous version of the Chromecast apk and installed Allcast B4 but Allcast just comes up with a blank page. I thought it might be possible to stream local content with no Internet access.

Technically, I'd say that you would be able to, since it wouldn't be using the internet to stream the video. I'm FAR from an expert on all this though...lol

I was actually wondering the same thing too...if we would be able to use the "Fling" PC Java program and/or the "AllCast"/"AirCast" Android apps, just as long as our Chromecasts are on the original (v.12072) firmware..

You had better do it QUICK, and I mean SUPER-HUMAN QUICK !! lol You're probably up the creek if it's been on for any decent amount of time. As far as I know, as soon as you turn it off and whenever you power it back up, it'll install that automatically downloaded OTA that it has already downloaded behind the scenes and stored on its memory. This is what *SHOULD* happen...just what I've heard by things I've read on here.

Nope, my first Chromecast installed the auto-OTA and each following update after leaving it plugged in, so I just went and got another Chromecast a few days ago. I ordered the recommended OTG cable from Amazon.com this past Thurs or Fri night. It's scheduled to arrive here at our house sometime around the end of this week(Thurs-Sat) sometime. After it gets here, I'm gonna root it before playin around with it. And if you're wondering, YES, the 2nd Chromecast that I got is STILL sitting in the box, just waiting for the OTG cable to arrive. It's too tempting to take it out and play around with it, but I know I had better just hold off till that cable gets here, otherwise I'd be just throwing that money that I spent on the cable down the drain.

Any ideal of which OTG cable from amazon to get? I see them from 1.00 to 10.00. I don't want to spend more than I have to.
Just ordered my chromecast to pick up in our local best buy and want to root it in case it has the older firmware.
Thanks

Withe the tablet/dock connection
Today I had again tel. contact with the store in Holland (Tabletcenter) and they again stated to me that ASUS is aware of the connection problem with the dock and the this only was a problem with the first batch and indeed they kept it on hold till they were sure the second batch is ok.
The next batch they said wouldn't have the connection problem anymore and next Monday I can exchange my TF701 for a new combo again.
I hope ASUS is right!!
The problem is in dock or in tablet or in both?

There is only 1 report from a user in the US stating that the flex is nearly gone with builddate 2013.11.
Tabletcenter in Holland have no stock till probably after Christmas, hopefully with build date 2013.11 or later.

Date is 2013.10
Flex is more then the tf101 but I have no reference to compare with other 701's.
So far I do I like the tab and i've tried moving the tab while docked but have not seen any dc's so far.
Will be using the tablet a lot so if I do get issue's, I'll report back right away.
Same experience for me, I'm using it for several weeks on a daily basis now, no issues so far.

Well it is from the batch that is called by Asus as faulty.
SBdags had the same production month and send his one back because of the amount of flex.
In Poland, many stores has stopped selling this product
I've seen posts that newer builds of the keyboard dock would have the connection issues fixed. Has anyone gotten one of these " 2013.11" or later newer build keyboard docks and can confirm it actually has the issues resolved? I'd really like to get the keyboard dock for my tablet, but don't want to deal with the issues of the broken keyboard dock.
So has anyone actually gotten a working keyboard dock from a newer batch?
Thanks!
My friend is getting one for Christmas. Unfortunately that means you'll have to wait until then to get confirmation from me.

I've had two docks now. I got the replacement on December 2. It's funny because I never had a problem with disconnection until I went to write a response to you OP. I can tell you that the second one seemed put together far better than the first, but it still has A LOT of wiggle room in it. It does not dock like the TF201 did. It has no support on the front. That is nice if you use a screen protector like I do, but like I said, it does have issues.
The primary reason I buy these tablets is because of the dock. I really hope Asus does the right thing here. I hated my tf201 because of the extreme lag caused by the i/o controller or whatever, and now this. Kind of a drag.

Was the "build date" number different on the packaging when you got the replacement?
I agree, the primary reason I got this tablet was the real keyboard dock for it. Seemed like a much better solution than the generic bluetooth keyboard docks I see on the internet. It's funny...always heard about the IO issues with this series of tablets...but dock always seemed to be really solid. The one time I actually go buy one...the IO issues are fixed, but the dock is now having issues.
On the transformerforum someone got a tablet with dock with production date 2013.11.
He reports that the flex is nearly absent and it connects more firmly.
Also the connection problem didn't popup.
Good news but now waiting for more people with the same experience.

I received my 6th keyboard a few days ago from Amazon. I was happy to see I finally got one with a manufacture date of 11/2013. I immediately inserted an SD card and tried moving the viewing angled. I did not see the SD card disconnecting and reconnecting so was hopeful.
Last night I noticed that the dock was not charging the tablet. I had to disconnect and replace the tablet in the dock 5 or 6 times before the widget showed the tablet charging.
This morning I tried viewing a video file on the external SD card in the dock. Changing the viewing and repeatedly caused loss of the data connection and the video player to crash.
Fail :crying:
I had the TF101 since it came out and was happy and had none of these problems. I now have had 2 of the tablets and 6 of the docks. I really want the TF701 to work for me but think I need to give up on this device find another option. I might try replacing dock or both dock and tablet again just because I want the tablet/dock combo and I am stubborn.
I got message that Tabletcenter had the TF701 in stock again and I could get a swap.
In the store they showed me the newest batch and it was 2013.10 so now I said keep it buddy and give money back.
So for now no TF701 anymore till it is proven that the problems are solved.
Using the TF700 again.:crying:

Not sure what you mean by flex but I have not noticed any obvious slop in the connection on any of them. I really went by performance and did not check closely for that though. I did have to replace a dock with my original TF101 and I learned back then that you want to hear two crisp snaps as the connectors on both sides lock into place. I have been having trouble getting that and even when I do I still get problems. The connection right now feels tight with no obvious slop but I just did another swivel test as I am writing this and the SD card disconnected and reconnected causing a video to crash.

My TF701 (2013.10) from eBuyer does have flex, but no disconnects as of yet. I've tried various angles.
My guess is that the flex could be to stop the few reported instances of cracked glass (previous generation Transformer Pads).

As the topic says, I'm getting a mobile dock firmware update notification, long press on the notification says it comes from Asus Services, so it seems to me to be totally legit and nothing abnormal, but I'm hesitant to do it since I've never on any of my other transformers received such a notification before.

So I RMA'd it, as not long after this post the keyboard dock stopped charging, and the update wouldn't go through.
They sent it back to me, still broken. Called them back, I'm getting free shipping to them this time, and it will be "expedited" maybe, and this time, they are going to investigate if it is "unrepairable" ....
Why the hell does a company that can make such great products have to fail so damn hard? Asus is really not doing well with this tablet, and I strongly suspect they need to fire their entire service department.

I have the 2014.04 dock and it has no wobble, clicks in tight and no disconnect issues at all. I got it from B&H, New Egg and Tiger Direct are still selling the 2013.10 units.
That's very encouraging to hear, as I've been dithering whether to buy a TF701 and dock combo for some months.
Does anyone know if it's possible to tell the date of a dock by looking at the dock itself, rather than the box it comes in? Here in the UK the tablet and dock are only sold as a bundle, and I'm worried that, even if the date on the box says 2014.04, that might just be the date that they put the two items in the box, and the dock itself could still be old stock.

I just received one from Amazon. It's a little difficult to get the tablet to fit in firmly but once it does, it stays in place. Only issue I'm running into is that the dock starts charging the tablet when the tablet is less than 90 percent charge. I had the Prime and the Infinity and those didn't begin charging until the tablet reached 70 percent. Is there any way to adjust this or is anyone else dealing with this issue?

I am pretty sure there is no way to adjust this but I am just curious as to why it would matter?
Part of the purpose of the dock is to recharge the tablet, as long as it does this why does it matter when?

Good point. Maybe I'm just used to it taking place closer to the 70 percent stage, which allows the dock to hold on to its battery for a longer period. I find that the dock drains much faster this way, which I'm not toally sure if that affects the battery's long-term life.

For those who are interested, I got this version of the dock from Amazon seller Galactics. Other than charging the tablet once it hits 90 percent, I've had no issues with it so far.

Mine too was purchased in the UK and the box has two stickers (for both the dock and the tablet).

I've just bought a tablet/dock combo from Amazon UK and for me the outer box only has one sticker on it, with one date.
Unfortunately, it's date 2014.01, so I've decided to return it to Amazon unopened (still sealed), with reason "Incompatible or not useful for intended purpose". It might be fine, but I don't want to risk it - they can sell it to someone else who can give it a go!
I have the 2014.01 and had no problems yet , working smoothly. Only problem yet was a flash when using touchpad after long time.

It's the Fourth of July weekend! I'm wondering and hoping there is a dock out there with a price reduction courtesy of a promo. Wishing. Hoping.
i am ytrying to update the dock but it doesnt upgrade, keep saying try again
anyone know where i can get this file seprrately and manually install
Three weeks ago, I bought from ncix Toronto - Dock 10.2013 - everything is OK - updating firmware, battery charging , plug-in to display ...
I just got the 2014.04 dock. When I first plugged it in, it said it was updating firmware on the dock and then it said it failed updating. Now every time I turn it on, it doesn't try updating again :/ how would I be able to try updating it again?
Also, when the tablet is connected to the dock and draining power from the dock, the dock makes these small tick sounds. I don't know why I would be hearing that though. When I have the dock disconnected and charging, it doesn't make that sound. When they are both connected and charging through the 30 pin charger the dock doesn't make that sound. I really hope I don't have to return it

But aren't the 2014.04 all fixed now of the docking issues? I also found dock connecting problems, which I thought was previously fixed. I contacted the seller and am getting a replacement sent out to me. Why would it still be having issues?

2 people are not enough opinions to say its fixed
Its not and those that say it is are lucky or satisfied with an unsatisfactory product.
Anyway good luck on the next i hope it works good
If not refund asap and move on.
I had mine close to a year and 4 times repair over 6months with them and still faulty.
