[Q] MotoX 1053 move from Tmo to Att and KK updates? - Moto X Q&A

so this question got me escalate to moto level 3 support - i have a 1053 dev edition unlocked/rooted that was used on tmo for about 8 months, got the ota 4.4.3 from them no prob. now switched carriers and the sim swap went fine and the coverage in my area is much better, but i'm afraid that the upgrade path is muddled.
i can't get the 4.4.4 ota from att, and cant find the zip anywhere. i reinstalled stock recovery, still no go. my hypothesis is that the att won't see my phone as eligible for ota since it is not a version 4.4.2 that it's designed to upgrade. or, maybe i'm a total noob and don't know wtf i'm saying. a lil help? ideas? things to try? i'm at a loss....

The xt1053 does not have 4.4.4 yet. You're fine, you just need to keep waiting.

OTAs aren't released by the carrier, they are specific to the phone model. In your case, the XT1053. As AGISCI said, 4.4.4 isn't available for the 1053 yet. Also, the difference between 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 is very small, mostly just a good for a bug.

i have no problem waiting as a former gnex/vzw person...
...but i just wanted to make sure i didn't paint myself in a corner and be forever on 4.4.3 - i'll keep looking to moto for the eventual update. Thanks for the reply

Nope, you're up to date. We'll see if they even bother with the 4.4.4 update, or whether they just skip it when android L is released with the new nexus (also reported to be made by moto).

Verizon 4.4.3?

i know our Verizon XT060 has not gotten the 4.4.3 update yet would anyone know when? (only sprint and t-mobile) but since we dont even have root for 4.4.2 ,should i update it to 4.4.3 with promises of root eventually? or should i stay on 4.4.2 and wait for that root. we all heard that 4.4.3 and up will have root problems so is it even worth it?

The new root exploit for 4.4.2 has been released. You'll find info in the "original android development" section. The exploit is PATCHED in 4.4.3
If you update, you will not be able to use the new root exploit. There is no promise that there will EVER be another exploit. If possible, you should pursue a bootloader unlock.
The "root problems" for 4.4.3 have been fixed by the latest version of SuperSU....so long as the developer of the root apps you are using has implemented the new methods. But you will ONLY achieve root on 4.4.3 with unlocked BL.
Good Luck.
P.S. Sprint Moto X users have NOT received an update yet....not even a SOAK test. Only the T-Mobile variant has received it, and you shouldn't consider it a final release. As with all "soak" tests, the idea is to identify any issues so they can be fixed, BEFORE the official OTA is released.
The official OTA will likely have updates not yet included in the current SOAK test 4.4.3.
Well, only Nexus and GPE devices even have 4.4.3 right now, and the T-Mo update is only in testing, so I don't know why you didn't wait at least until the T-Mo version got the OTA, and then probably another week or two before asking when the update may come. Do people really have that little patience that they can't wait 2 weeks after it goes to AOSP and Nexus phones before asking about when an update will come? It'll be released when Moto, Google, Lenovo, and VZW deem it to be ready and not a moment sooner.

[Q] Why am i still on 4.4.2?

I have an unlocked MOTO x and im on 4.4.2?? isnt 4.4.4 out now?
No, the last version is 4.4.3 and if you really need to update (there is no reason to do) first install a retail version firmware for your X model. (If there)
Here's the complete firmware list.

First, the person who answered you should have asked which device you are using (model number), and who your carrier is.
Second, the majority of us here don't recommend that you flash another carrier's firmware to your phone. Many things can go wrong, and if you ever revert back to the correct firmware, you have to use extreme caution to make sure you don't flash an OLDER firmware version to the phone, which can brick it!!! If you choose to flash a different firmware to your phone, do it at your own risk. You could end up with a paperweight.
Third, both the 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 updates are very MINOR updates. It isn't worth bricking just because you aren't patient, simply to (possibly) get another hour or two of battery life or a few small bug fixes.
I highly recommend that you simply be patient. Your carrier WILL release 4.4.4 eventually, and at that time you can simply take the over-the-air update assuming you haven't modified your /system or flashed custom recovery.
the update won't be noticeable to the users. it is bug fixes and a few tweaks. better to wait for 5.0 to come out

Slight correction... that is NOT the complete firmware list.
That site contains a copy of any SBF found or leaked... Sometimes it takes weeks after an OTA is pushed before a leaked SBF of that version is found and posted (think ATT 4.4.2)
They are "leaks" in the fact that they are not meant to be released to the public. As for how they "make it out" to end up on that site, well that is a different discussion that I don't want to get into.
That site is neither owned, operated, nor supported by Motorola.

also if you have had a locked phone PREVIOUSLY but unlocked it later, and you are using a carrier thats not the orginal one, I think that could also factor in as to why you are not getting updates. For example, if you had a moto x for ATT and you unlocked it to use for TMOBILE, you might have a delayed update or in some cases no update at all. Just my 2 cents.

It does not matter that your phone is unlocked. This is totally unrelated to receiving updates. Just FYI, NO ONE with a Moto X has received 4.4.4 yet (except MAYBE soak-testers). Only a handful of carriers are on 4.4.3.
The 4.4.3 upgrade was CANCELLED do to a bug being found, and instead, all the variants that hadn't released 4.4.3 are going to be upgraded STRAIGHT to 4.4.4 (skipping 4.4.3 entirely).
I don't think you understand just how much testing has to go into these upgrades before they are released.
Here is an EXCELLENT article that should explain it for you. The part you are interested in is called "The Big Hold-Up"

[Q] Moto x Carrier Free

I was wondering if there was a way to change my moto x xt1058 (currently with 4.4.2 Movistar Argentina) to an international or carrier free firmware?
I looked up in the firmware link from motorola and there seems it doesnt exist a 4.4.4 update, yet for the moto G it doesnt either but my brother currently have his on 4.4.4
Thanks in advance guys
AFAIK there's no international or carrier-free firmware per-se. You may want an AOSP-based ROM like SlimROM, DirtyUnicorns, etc.
You can flash a bloatware free version, though, but it will still be based on some carrer's ROM.
As of today, only Verizon has released its official 4.4.4 and will be full of bloatware also.
fortunately my phone came bloatware-free.
So the only 4.4.4 update out there is Verizon's?
My idea was to flash a firmware from which i would be able to get the earliest OTAs

Not only is this very risky (flashing another carrier's ROM), but also it doesn't mean that you'll get updates quickly at all!
In the case of the Moto X, Motorola has staggered the updates across all carriers. The camera update came first for 1 carrier. Then the 4.4 update came first for a different carrier. The 4.4.2 update was first for yet another carrier. The 4.4.3 update came first for the XT1053, and the 4.4.4 update came first for Verizon. There is nothing you can do to make sure you receive updates "earliest" - unless you switch carrier ROMS each time a new update is released. Not only is this ill-advised, but it could leave you with an expensive paperweight.
My advise is be patient. Your carrier WILL get it soon.

All Devices receive their updates direct from Moto....
Even if you do this, you still won't be the first to get updates. Almost every update so far has been "staggered" amongst the different carriers. One carrier got KK first, one got 4.4.3 first, VZW got 4.4.4 first....
Rogers WILL be on 4.4.4 very soon...

T-Mobile 4.4.4?

Is it just me or has Moto never rolled out 4.4.4 to the unlocked GSM editions? My mom bought an unlocked phone straight from Motorola and yet she's still on 4.4.3. We're using the phone on T-Mobile if that makes a difference.

It's not just you. T mobile version got 4.4.3. A bug was found after they started rolling it out, so they fixed it for the other models (that's the main difference between 4.4.3 and 4.4.4). Most of the other features/upgrades were included in 4.4.3, so they didn't make updating the t-mobile edition a priority. It'll probably get it after they finish all of the others are done unless android L is ready to go by then, in which case, it'll probably just get that.

The T-Mobile 4.4.3 sbf is available:
Moto Firmwares
Oops, looks like the site is down.
I got 4.4.4 just a week ago on Dev Edition
I got 4.4.4 just a week ago on Dev Edition, although its not TMobile,
So might be possible, yours on the way.:good:
4.4.4 for t-mobile version (any XT1053 model) was delivered a couple of weeks ago. Go to settings/about phone/system updates and you should update if you have a factory phone - if you have unlocked or rooted, go back to factory spec before trying to update.
