I know there is something with not being able to save to the card but I can't even go into my card with a file manager and move files around to clean it up. Does HTC have a fix for this or do they really require you to go to the underground here lol to fix this dumb s***? This is ridiculous. They should have put this limitation in the specs to be fair. Who'd imagine someone would sell you a phone you couldn't manage the files within it? It's like selling a car you couldn't clean, unless of course you went to this special place on the internet where they'd give you the instructions on how to tweak your car so you could clean it. But get your tool kit and study materials because you'll have to put in and time and education... to what again? Move files around your sd card? Excuse me, sorry. Anyone know a solution or do I gotta root and void my warranty?

That's pretty good, I can see you have never owned an iPhone
you plug an iPhone into a PC it looks like a camera folder and all you get to see is your pictures.
I can plug my M7 into my PC and create / move / delete / apps / ringtones / movies / books / alerts / backup installed apps / and with a usb OTG you get even more file management options.

Thanks anyway. That's it uh? Yeah, I'm aware and that's what I do from time to time. The next time I have to connect this phone to my comp I'm gonna root it it. I don't really care about the warranty as I've never been one to need reasons for warranties, knock on wood, but I imagine most people do, along with wanting to be able to manage their files on their phones. Okay, that's it, I'm rooting it once I set aside the time.

Hi everyone. I just joined this forum and I am hoping to get some help from some wise jailbreaker out there..
I bought my G1 from T-Mobile a couple of weeks ago with the intent to jailbreak it and use it as a modem for my laptop. I finally got started on the project and I was stonewalled right from the get-go. Neither the original SD card in the phone nor my new 8GB SD card can be seen by either one of my computers. My desktop is running Windows XP Pro and my laptop is running Vista Home Premium. Neither one will see the SD card no matter what I do. The card does not show up in "My Computer" on either one of the systems, but shows up as "Drive J" in both of them under "Drive Mangement". But it says there is "No Media", so therefor nothing to format.
Since I can't even format the card, I am bogged down from the start. I am hoping someone out there can tell me what to do in order to jailbreak this phone, since that was the only reason I got it. I was perfectly happy with my HP6550 iPAQ otherwise...
Has anyone out there had the same problem?
have u tried formating the card to fat32?
You could try a sd reader. When you pluggin the phone in did you make sure to pull down the notification bar and click the usb thing and hit "Mount"?
Try going into settings, sdcard and storage and format the card that way. If not it sounds like a windows driver issue, you might want to try a card reader, or download and burn a live cd of linux something like ubuntu which will have no problem reading the android phone. You could also use hp as a card reader if it supports micro sdcards
You could just download the files you need through the internet on your phone also, I do all my flashing, downloading and modifing right on my g1, download something like linda or astro file manager from the market so that you can actually download the files
Thanks guys.
pistol4413: That is what I am trying to do according to instructions. But without the card beeing seen by Windows, it is sort of hard to format it...
crpercodani: Thanks for the tip. I will try a separate card reader. And there was no need to hit "mount". It all happened automatically and the phone said the card was mounted. Well, not in those words but it said the card was connected. I tried to unmount and remount again. Didn't do anything.
gridlock32404: I tried that (formatting in the phone). It did nothing. I will try a separate reader. The HP doesn't support micro SD, only mini and standard.
And I can't believe it would be a Windows driver issue both in my XP Pro system and Vista Premium...?
Provided I get this solve first of course, I am also curious if you might have detailed, reliable instructions on how to go through the whole root thing and getting the phone rooted and setup to provide a wireless network for my laptop? Right now I am following instructions from Anthony Moreno on YouTube. He has a few instructional videos on there that seem to make sense. But if any of you know of some other source for instructions, please let me know. I'd appreciate any help I can get to make this a smooth project and not a major headache...
There are many detailed posts and stickys, on this q and a there is a thread for the one click that is really good, it is written by david and is very good instructions
Thanks for the mention gridlock32404. I have a detailed guide in my sig for the one click method. Or if you search for root/hack g1 then there is a good guide that i used to root my phone back in the day. If you use my method and encounter any problems pm me because i will see that faster than a post in the thread also if you do it and go with the rom in the guide (latest cyanogen rom) it comes with a tether app to do exactly what want (at least i think it does)
They are good instructions david and I think that it is warranted to get sticky since most of the new g1 users are using it, I would perfer them to do the old fashioned way so they learn more about what they are doing but the one click is bringing a lot of new users to rooting since it is less scary

I completely agree. People should root their phones the long way first but one click is good for people that know what they are doing
I got 2 guys that work at my local tmobile that asked me if next time I come pay my bill if I could root their phones for them so I might just give that one click a try. I got a ? For you on that regard, can I just pop my sdcard in there phones and set them up that way and when I flash the new rom I can put back in their card without any damge to mine when I put in back in my phone

As long as you power your phone down first i can't see any why your sdcard would get damaged.
That's what I thought, so I guess I will do that tomorrow then or monday
You should tell them you will partition their sdcards and install the new spl, if they leave a mytouch on the table and look away lol.
It's a mytouch and a g1. The g1 guy wants hero so I would set that all up for him. Why do you say that about the mytouch, it's gonna be my first go on that so I am unsure

The mytouch was a joke payment method. To do one click root on the mytouch make sure you put the 1.33.2005 spl on it, since any spl for the g1 (hard or eng) will brick it. Also you might want to get the amon_ra recovery image for the mytouch
Yeah I was planning to put the amon's recovery on their since they can't use the recovery console anyway, I was aware of the spl difference though so I was good on that, I did read up alittle on it
i just received my G1, well 1.6 was installed, but: No WLAN, No SD, No Bluetooth and no File-Transfer with Win7 x64. So i'm thinking of a flash, but how?
I wanted to get diagnostics mode, but what is the capture-key?
any other possibilities to rescue this device? (I think, the SD-Card driver was somehow deleted. Tried a software-Wipe, but it didn't help.
I hope someone can help me.
Thx in advance.
Well thats sorta like asking to get into a box sealed off with ducktape using the mailbox=p. You are going to need an sdcard so you can root it. Find any microsdcard and load up rc29, root it, then flash some custom firmware on top. If you don't have an sdcard, then you can't set up root therefore no new roms. The only thing that would work without an sdcard is ADB, but you need root to do something meaningful like pushing an app, etc..
I got similar problem.. My SD card slot seems to be dead. Android and recovery as well, doesn't see any SD card slot so the SD card can't be mounted. And yes, I've already tried with another card. No luck.
So there's my question that OP already asked: Is there any way to flash update.zip without sdcard?
Short answer: No
Long answer: you can change specific parts of a rom without an sdcard (kernel, apps), but not an entire rom or update.zip.
That's what I thought... Unfortunately. So I guess it's time to buy a Sapphire.
i have a program for windows called android commander. it has the option to flash an update. i dont know if this will help but it might. i found it on XDA somewhere. i just dont remember where.
edit: it also has some other really cool features, like push and pull and copy. great if you want to push an apk to the system/app folder
edit here is the link for download of the of the version that works for me http://androidcommander.cyf.pl/?file_id=1
ok, gonna try that android-commander.
If even a hard-reset doesn't bring up the 3 issues, i think, these are Hardware-Errors. (it COULD also be, that the "drivers" from these parts have been removed/deleted from the rom by the previous owner, but a hard-reset WOULD restore the missing "drivers" or am i wrong? (i have not much knowledge about Linux, i'm more a Windows-Freak.)
I mean is it possible to "remove" parts of the "drivers" from the ROM and the Flash/EEPROM that even after restore the part would still be missing?
Until it's rooted you can't make major firmware/bootloader modifications just by sticking a usb cable into it.

you mean "unless it's rooted", 'cause i think, it's not rooted (how to find out, if it is?)

Turn the phone off, hold down the CAMERA button read off the top four lines.
That will tell you if it is using a custom spl.
Alternatively you could go in the rom and type su in the terminal, that would also show if it's rooted.

i tried around with the Android-Commander as said before, i also connected the phone but I was not able to copy ANY data to the phone or create any folder anywhere (so not even a custom ringtone or wallpaper), for rooting is a SD-card required, which is not useable due to (maybe) hardware defect, so i ended up the following:
I agreed with the seller to reship the G1 and he refunds my money.
From that short time playing with G1 and Android, i say as conclusion:
Well, the touchscreen works far better than any Windows-Phone, but the Compatibility with Windows is nearly completely missing - and so some for me required aspects of that phone. So i'll just buy another Windows-Device. (i's easier to flash, spl or unlock and you have better and easier possibilites or modifying/customizing your phone.

that might be true, but pay more than 150 for a phone, I only use as secondary phone for a few internet/data-activities is, considered the fact, that in 6 weeks, I'm unemployed again, a bit much to ask for, either a complete new phone or a cheap (ie less than 150 bucks) phone, that has wlan, 3g and a hardware-keyboard - rest is irrelevant - that is being used as secondary phone.
Sure, if the G1 would have been fully working, it would have been a nice device (not a replacement to my Xperia, of course, as the G1 has a minus in resolution compared to WVGA), but so is only to note: if you want a cheap Android-Phone, wait another 3-6 months, there are a lot of them coming out and so the elder ones (magic and g1) should go down in price a bit.
Sometimes, prices on ebay drop around 50 bucks within 3 months - checked on that.
Thread moved to Q&A.
ok so my wife had to call t-moble and get a replacement she dont want to lose her stuff. i tried to simply place the old sd in the replacent..

The idea is the same.
Use the disassembly/assembly guides available to upgrade the uSD card to 32GB, but just switch the uSD out for the one you want to use out of your old phone.
Lane Anderson: FAIL!!!!
You can't use your old card because it's locked.
The password was applied to it by the OS, your only choice is to format it with a nokia device and then use any software that can recover from sd cards, the password is not a hardware lock, just software lock.
The card has a file system similar(almost) to FAT, so maybe you can get all back, BUT you'll have to sort the names because of the structure used by the WP7.
Good Luck!
^^^ And there you have it. Sorry, bud.
Hello friends, I'm sorry to improve open multiple threads on htc 8X, but I want to know some things that I think are important about htc 8x.first, how to flash original stock rom{not reset phone}, else how to install drop files on device and third, I 'd like to write in this topic people have htc 8x and what do about the phone.
Thanks in advance and again I apologize.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'install drop files on device', I'll assume you meant placing files on the phone (using a USB cable) and then installing them. This is something you can't do right now.
Since we're talking about an HTC 8X, which doesn't have an SD card slot to install packaged apps (XAPs), your current only option to install anything on the phone is the Deployment tool (from the WP8 SDK), which is limited to unencrypted apps (so apps from the store wont work), and you can't have more than 3 of them installed at a time.

Wow, you ate a lot of words from there, I'll assume you meant "I'd like those people, who have an HTC 8X phone to write what they think about the device."
I own one. I was pretty happy with it, however I upgraded to another phone since. It's a really good phone, slim, light, has a ton of nice features, easy to use, etc. If you're coming from another platform be prepared to let go of some stuff you were used to having, as Windows Phone works on some slightly different philosophies. But there are a lot of ways a Windows Phone is simply better than other OS-es, in things like: UI responsiveness and speed, the amount of features packed into a device, and the live tiles are something I simply couldn't live without anymore.
Especially now, since the 8X's price dropped drastically, I still consider it a high-end phone, at least until the next wave of 5 and 6" phones come out.
As this is an HTC 8x related question mostly, It'd have been better placed in this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-8x
Cheers

hi, hope you are all well.
This is a bit of a long shot but got to be worth a try as we have come to a brick wall and desperately need some help.
To cut a long story short, as some background for you, a friends Nokia Lumia 800 Windows 8 was stolen by some skank head, the phone had cherished pictures containing the photos of her new borns when they were very ill in hospital. No other backups..we have the phone back but it has been restored to factory settings.
here is the problem, as it does not have a memory card and the storage is internal we cannot get the drive to be recognised by windows as 'a drive'
it states that it is 'generic hierarchial' and I cannot get any software to pick it up. have managed to edit the registry so it shows up as storage and can access it but recovery software just doesn't 'see' the drive. They are MTP and use 128bit bitlocker for encryption.
Can anyone please help with this? the family are gutted and I would really like to find a way to at least try and recover something from it.
thank you for reading and look forward to any help and replies you can offer.

Lumia 800 is WP 7.x not WP 8.
For WP7 only Zune can sent media to the phone.
When the Lumia 800 was new, there was a bootloader hack to get it into USB Mass Storage Mode (this is how the first custom ROMs for the 800 were made). Unfortunately, Nokia patched that out really quickly, and prevented downgrading to that bootloader version. So unless the phone is missing a whole lot of updates, there's no way to get block-device-level access from your PC.
With that said, I haven't been following the Lumia 800 hacking scene recently, but it's possible that there's a way to root the phone. If so, a high-privilege app could (theoretically) get direct access to the storage and attempt to extract the images that way (basically, the kind of software you'd have run on the PC, but run it on the phone instead). That would be a lot of work to write such an app, though.
Also, if Bitlocker was enabled before the hard reset, the data is going to be quite unrecoverable. Bitlocker uses a different master key each time it is "turned on" and cracking AES is not something you can do by whining at people hard enough.
I realize this isn't what they want to hear, but... this is why you back things up! I don't like the "automatically upload my images to Sky/OneDrive" option, but it's there; if you choose not to use it then you're taking responsibility for keeping your photos safe yourself.

hi, many thanks for your reply, I was sort of resigned to the fact all was lost but thought I'd at least try. I always back things up and advise all my friends to do so, this particular phone had come through a friends boyfriend who I didn't know and hadn't backed up, then the phone was stolen.
The phone was restored to factory settings so I am assuming it has had no updates since then, it is on Bootloader 7.41.0.0 Windows 7.8
