I tried to install OTA update for my Xperia ZR.
The update is downloaded when i try to intall..the install starts but will not proceed.
The phone will restart.I tried it several times but no progress.
I had my phone rooted with towelroot without any recovery.
I used supersu, greenify, disable service,Xposed,Titanium Backup to remove bloatwares.
Now i dont know what yo do.
I used Universal Unroot to unroot before the installation.
Need urgent help.
Any solution in appreciated.

removing the bloatware from the system is the reason why it doesn't work! The updater recognizes the missing files and aborts the update, so the only way to get the Ota update is to bring the removed apps and files back!

Usually Bricking occurs when you try to update via OTA with Unlocked Bootloader. PC Companion should not be a problem.
BUT it's always better to be in the safe side. While Updating make sure to relock the bootloader and flash a stock ROM then update. :good:
Similar case for me (unlocked/using KA07 XZ revolution rom), what if I flash C6603_Unbranded_10.1.1.A.1.253.zip? Will this brick my device? Will I lose any data?

First of all, PCC wont allow you to update when you are in unlocked BL - the process itself won't start. So no problems of bricking!

It won't brick, however you will lose your data in your internal storage unless you untick the wipe userdata option in flashtool firmware selection menu!

I think you're talking about the flashable zip, rather than the .ftf file. I can confirm that this will not brick your phone, as I have done it myself.

Okay .. So I'm running ver. 14.3.A.0.681 on my Z1 and I want to root it .. I heard of a method in which the phone must be downgraded, then rooted, then reupdated again using flashtool .. But every time I try to downgrade I get stuck in a boot loop .. I have managed to fix the boot loop problem by reflashing the 14.3.A.0.681.ftf
Please guys how can I downgrade without having this problem? And does this rooting method work? If not, what should I do?

Hi ralph97,
Here is what I did (although I was on .257 to start with)
1) Flashed C6903 14.1.G.1.534 Generic from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469191
2) Install dualrecovery from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606
3) Flash SuperSU (via recovery) from here - http://download.chainfire.eu/282/SuperSU/
4) Update to NUTs .681 from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2687443
Each time I flashed an ftf, I cleared everything, so I made a backup (I just copied the stuff such as music, photos etc to my pc)
I hope that this helps.
PS - all cradits to helping me to @gregbradley
Regards,
Alan
If you open the BL there is no need to make all the way back to 534.
You just have to open the BL install a recovery, on the 680 ftf, and then install the supersu.

Yes this is true, but you may want to backup your TA partition before unlocking the bootloader and this needs root, so you have to downgrade to .534 anyway.
So, yes technically you can do this, but I DO NOT advise it.
Well, the first time you do it, probably it shoud be done as you say.
i also do that...its work..dont need to downgrade..

I hoped you backed up your TA....
You need root to do it, so it has to be done BEFORE you unlock.

Please remind to People the consequences in doing this! Like the Warranty, after Unlock Bootloader, will be Voided and even before that, like @gregbradley already said, Backup TA to not lose DRM Keys. The short way isn't the best all the time.
You do not reupdate by flashtool.
Only with the recovery.
Damn my thread got locked.

Guys thank you very much, but i went with the safe way and downgraded, then rooted using v root .. but there is still one problem, everytime i try to flash the dual recovery (on cmd), i get:"adb sserver error killing..."
"unable to open daemon"
What should i do??

You still need to flash SuperSU to get full root, but in step 4 just flash the ROM of your choice.

Do NOT update to 4.4.4 via PCC if you want root.
Find the FTF and flash it via flashtool.

That will also lose root.
Solution
Either update via PCC or flashtool, then use the easy newroot method from the cross device development section to root again.

If you use pccompanion you will keep your data, but your system partition is wiped and upgraded.
If you use FTF then the phone is completely wiped (Data and internal storage as well as system)
Hello to the great people at xda..
Sorry for being a noob about it but i have certain questions about my c6902. First off my Z1 is rooted with the build number .157 with the stock os and the stock recovery. As of now i have been getting all OTAs without a problem. However, i would like to know what would happen if i install a custom recovery. Will it stop the OTAs? If yes, then which OTAs will it stop? Will it stop just the system OTAs or the application OTAs as well like walkman album etc.? Or will i just be able to see the available updates but would never be able to install them? And how can i revert back to the stock recovery? Would it make everything just as the way it was before with no strings attached? Sorry again for such a basic though as i couldn't find an answer anywhere else. Thanks a ton!

if your bootloader stays locked, you CAN recieve OTA updates, but if you rooted with towelroot (i expect that because your an .157, like me ) you wont be able to apply system OTA updates cause they can not be verified. but OTA updates for Walkman or other apps will work.
Only the system updates are broken with the towelroot method. but of course you can install a custom recovery to revert to stock recovery, just flash the ftf with flashtool again and you have your stock recovery back (but make shure to untick the wipe boxes in flashtool

Thanks a lot for the info . So I get what you're saying and 'tis true that I'm rooted with towel root. So that means that I won't be able to install system OTAs and that's ok. Also you already have been very helpful but would you be kind enough to please send me a link for the stock recovery's ftf? Have you successfully tried doing the same on 157?

There isnt a "recovery ftf", you have to flash the whole ftf all over it again and than you have stock recovery back
and yes i did the same on .157, i flashed this Baltic version: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_d8uWGbkaetRjFOYkZib0Z1Y1k/view?usp=sharing the baltic version works fine for me too, im from germany but i guess it should work (at least for european users) if you are not from europe, just flash .108 or .133 and update and root

Ok.. But what if I do a full system repair using the pc companion? Would it do the same thing? Also, would pc companion have any problems detecting or repairing the phone with the custom recovery installed?

Pc companion works too, but the system repair from pc -c will wipe your data! So all your data is lost.
With flashtool youcan decide if you want to keep your data or to do to a wipe

OTA will always fail when you're rooted, as signature checks will fail. You need to flash a pre-rooted 157 after wiping system and caches (not data).

Install a non-rooted, fresh copy of 157. Close Sony Updater tool(s).
Flash the 108 kernel using Flashtool. Close Flashtool.
Root using XperiaRoot. Close XperiaRoot.
Flash the 157 kernel using Flashtool. Close Flashtool.
Install XZDR Dual Recovery, and use TWRP from now on. CWM is old and should be killed with fire.
