FYI - CF Root works on T-Mobile BNH5 - Galaxy S 5 General

This morning I screwed up - tried to update from NF6 via Mobile Odin and did something wrong. I couldn't get out of the Recovery screen and ended up re-flashing stock NF6 just to get out of a soft brick situation. Unfortunately I didn't insert the CF file and ended up losing root.
So...I figured that since I had already lost root, I took the OTAs for NG3 AND NCH5 (the new voLTE). Then I flashed CF. I got my root back.
This may not be a revelation to many, but it was to me. I thought I would have to wait until there was a rooted version of NCH5 in order to get back root.

But now KNOX is tripped mate.

Yes, it is... but I don't think that hurts me as I'm insured with Square Trade.

[Q] How do you take an OTA after Root?

Ok so many of us have successfully rooted our devices and frozen update and renamed security files to avoid losing our root.
What are the proper steps for Dummies like me to accept the Lollipop OTA in December without losing my data?
Also now 4.4.4 is anounced with Bluetooth fixes that I have noticed while streaming
(My gut tells me keep update frozen until a flashable rooted 5.0.)
It was said in another thread NOT to take the 5.0 update until a root method for it has been established. If you wanna keep root, I'd wait. I'm still running stock rooted AND3 firmware/kernel. I'm looking to get the newest update up to today (I think ANG3 or something of that nature.) I'm just not taking updates yet so I can keep my root. I'm having problems with the phone freezing and restarting though so I'd like an update.

NG3 is smooth

I am stock rooted with ANG3 pre-installed on my purchased S5. It runs smooth as silk if you use the method posted by muniz_ri in general. All I've done is turned off or frozen some bloatware and installed Chainfire SU 2.16.
My question was more geared towards the person who might want to go from rooted to the lastest OTA without losing data etc. I have been diving in pretty deep to the AT&T side of XDA since leaving sprint a week ago and I think the answer might have been posted by shortydoggg with the soft-bricked thread.
I was hoping someone might be able to tell me a non odin 3.09+ way to remove the freeze on my apps in the correct order to take the OTA without tripping KNOX if I wanted to do that knowing I might loose root.
I thought we might be able to follow muniz_ri and odin the one file back towelroot again after.
Basically I like stock always have, but I want root also for AdAway Titanium Backup Etc. and being a truck driver I wanted the 4.4.4 Bluetooth fix for Iheart radio.

It's hard to say what the best approach will be until the update arrives. In the case of 4.4.4, I'm rather confident that a somewhat simple method can be developed to take the update while keeping root. As for 5.0, I have some ideas none ideal but we'll see.
Is Android 4.4.4 for the AT&T version of the Galaxy S5 out? I have a Galaxy S5 AT&T phone but I don't have AT&T service. I am running Android 4.4.2 with build version ND3 is there something newer than this?
Updating to NG3
Het guys, so today I got ahold of Odin 3.09 and the NG3 update, I applied it through Odin in the AP slot and it DID NOT update my phone to NG3. My Baseband still says AND3 and kernel is 3.4.0-2178781
Tue Jul 22 13:58:46 KST 2014. Anybody have any options i can use without having to downgrade to NCE just to upgrade? LOL...Im kinda at a loss,Ive tried it in download mode twice now and no fu go.
Plz disregard my message. I'm good now and running rooted NG3.

[Q] Unroot to install an OTA

I’m guessing this has already been asked but I didn’t find a good answer for it, so I will ask here. I recently got my Verizon S6 Edge (SM-G925V) and was able to root it using Ping Pong and had no problems at all (with Super SU installed) – kudos to Keen Team. I’m on G925VVRU1AOC3 now (stock) but maybe a week ago, I started receiving a notice to install an OTA update. Should I install the OTA and if so, should I unroot my phone prior to installing the update? Sorry if I seem cautious but I've not seen this discussed about the S6 Edge and I definitely don't want to trip KNOW or brick my phone.
Thanks in advance,
UCG

If you read the q&a section on the ping pong root sub forum you will learn that thee ota cannot be installed after you have achieved root. Perhaps the best thing to do is unroot using odin then install the ota

Download smart switch onto your PC and update thru that way. It will update and you will loose root but all your data is not touched. Then you use pingpong to reroot.

Thanks @dansto82 and @Snowby123, I actually did those things. I did the ODIN thing, it didn't work (the reason I posted this thread was because I saw what to do for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, but no Verizon steps). So when ODIN and factory resets didn't work, I ran the Verizon utility that comes with the phone and I did the "repair" (which downloads and installs a fresh copy of the stock ROM) and then I updated from OC3 to OE2 and that toasted my phone (and I can't downgrade either). The device actually works until it finishes booting up, then the touch screen has issues and performance is slower than my big wheel in a blizzard, but at least root is gone because I have to send it back now. The setup process runs without issue until it completes (so it isn't the physical screen). Either way, my S6 Edge 128GB OC3 phone ended up not liking the OE2 update. and I just got off the phone with Verizon and they are sending me another one. Let's hope that works.
Got my replacement phone (came with OC3). Updated to OE2 and rooted, works great. I guess caution when unrooting the Verizon S6 Edge to do an OTA.
It appears that once you install the OF1 update you can't flash back to OE2

Downgrade from Lollipop to Kitkat without tripping knox SM-G900F

Hi all!!
After spending a huge amount of hours, searching the forum, I still have doubts...
Is it possible to downgrade from Lollipop, to kitkat, without tripping knox (warranty void) in the S5???
Some say, that flashing with Odin it's ok, others say that will go in a loopboot, others say that the bootloader is not compatible, and flashing a new rom will trip knox, others say that if the rom is official, will not trip knox...
What to believe??????
If there is a way to downgrade, safely and without tripping knox, please show me how, in a step-by-step process, I really appreciate it.
Here are the mobile phone data:
SM-G900F
Firmware: G900FXXU1BOD3
Thanks in advance!
Downgrade away, I have the G900F, and flashing KK over LP works fine and does not trip KNOX
You only trip KNOX by flashing custom stuff, stock ROMs are signed by Samsung so do not trip KNOX
The only issue I had was having to flash KK twice, first flash worked but wouldn't boot, flashed again, booted first time

And how did it go?? Did You safely downgraded to KK?? I was thinking about it, got my S5 with pre-installed Lollipop but without root I can't block adds and stuff - it's rather annoying.

You can root lollipop, but it'll trip KNOX
CF Auto Root
Yeah i know that CF-AutoRoot works on lolly but I'd rather keep my warranty void Guess no new method on gaining root w/o tripping knox was introduced to S5 design If i recall S6 is rootable now without knox messed up but no go for S5
I flashed my S5 a few months ago from 5.0 back to 4.4.2, and last week the same thing, but on my gf's Note3.
It's kind of easy and safe to do, if you do some research in advance:
- find exactly which ROM you need (the wrong one won't work and make ur phone temporarily unusable).
- download the official stock ROM
- KNOX won't trip if it's an official stock ROM.
- Boot the phone in recovery mode to wipe the cache partition and do a factory reset (after backing up the important data).
- Flash with Odin. There's many youtube tutorials on that one.
Enjoy.
If you didn't do a factory reset, wipe cache partitions etc you'll almost certainly get stuck in bootloop after flashing. In that boot up in recovery mode again, do those wipes and then restart.

Hi all!
Tell me something, after flashing KK, software update is allways trying to update to LP... is there a way of avoiding this, without root access?
Thanks in advance!
you need to disable the FOTA processes, but I'm not sure you can do that without root
Ok guys so let me get this straight - I only need proper KK image, provided by Samsung (their signature and so on) with my CSC (in my case Polish XEO)? Then connect my phone with PC, start ODIN (any particular version?) and what to choose, what check and what not? Sorry for this only had HTC before (and Sony and LG but those are wifes phones) and flashing on it was a bliss, especially when You had S-OFF.

Not stop, but you can delay it indefinitely by clearing the cache in recovery each time it has the update ready for you to install
Then boot back into droid, and hit the install button, which will fail because you just deleted the update in recovery
Rinse and repeat
You can root KK without tripping KNOX though, so no reason to not root it really

Either make sure your KK ROM is a pre June 2014 build, if not, either flash with ODIN, or read up on how to downgrade only the Kernel to a pre June 2014 KK kernel, then use towelroot app to root it, and flash your original Kernel back
All the info you need is here on XDA, might take a bit of reading, but you should really learn as much as you can before blindly flashing things anyway
I read in another thread, someone said that if your S5 came with LP out of the box, you can't downgrade to even official samsung KK without tripping knox. I'm not sure how true is this or whether that person is just blowing smoke.

knox and software update?

Got phone at launch, rooted for awhile, bricked with custom rom. Didn't realize how much a pain in the a%^ samsung became went back to stock and left it, but tripped knox, have tried clicking software update occasionally since then, but nothing ever happens. I'm still on COF6. Does tripping knox completely kill updates? It does nothing after clicking update, thanks.
I was rooted and went back to stock and was able to update. The latest is OJ7.

Was your Knox tripped though?
Yes, several times over too because i screwed up rooting the first time and had to try again, and then i tried all the roms out while rooted. I went back to stock specifically to try to the OJ7 update when it came out.

Note3 n900a firmwares/NL1 to NC2/NO PC/TOWELROOT/HELP?

Ok so first let me apologize if I overlooked a similar post but I've been having root issues for weeks now and haven't found my exact situation yet.
Here's the background. I have an AT&T Note 3 N900A. When I got the phone I had no issue using towel root to root the device. Worked first try. I'm new to rooting and I was in love with all the new options. I started small playing with xposed and fonts overclocking etc. Then started researching custom Roms. Discovered cwm twrp wouldn't work with my locked boot loader so researched and got safestrap. Did the backup made my new Rom slot and with a guide I attempted my 1st custom Rom flash. FAIL. bootloop. Revert to stock Rom via Odin. Download towel root. Rooted. No problem.
2nd attempt at custom Rom flash with safe strap. fail. Download another stock firmware (at this point I was still dumb to the difference between NL1 NC2 OC2 etc). And in still dumb to oxed and deoxed. But apparently I got out of bootloop with a different firmware version this time around. First I decided to run lollipop 5.0. Towel root said device not suported. Now I'm running 4.4.4 NL1. device not supported. Also can't get kingoroot king root(pc or non pc) cf or anything else I've tried to work. From what I've read I need to go back to the NC2 4.4.2 and run towel root from there.
My current issue is I have no windows pc to run Odin on and my wife's MacBook refuses to install the Mac version correctly nor will it load the Web based version on the casual page.
I just figured out that I can't use safe strap to flasthe nc2 until I'm rooted. And without Odin to revert I'm scared to try any other method without some guidance.
First off... Is there any way to root my current 4.4.4 without going to the nc2 or if I allow my phone to upgrade to 5.o again is there a non pc root method on lollipop yet?
Or would I be able to download a nc2. Zip to my phone save to sd and use the note 3 stock recovery to revert? ?
I'm open to any suggestions you guys may have even if I haven't mentioned it in my post. Hope to get some answers asap and thanks in advance!!
I'm not familiar with the Note 3 for AT&T but Heimdall (in place of Odin on a PC) may work on your mac to flash ROMs.
http://glassechidna.com.au/heimdall/
Yeah I tried that a while back but it was b4 I knew this much. Maybe j can get it working now. I was just hoping there was an easier way.
