So a couple of buddies and i were wondering if it is possible to enable Universal Mass Storage mode on the s5. This is so when you plug it into a USB it will show up as a thumb drive? does anyone know how? a lot of the scripts do not work for the s5. Maybe someone on here would know?

Usb port is it locked or there is possibility to use it like usb host ?
To manage copy pictures of a camera to phone without pc by usb adaptator.
Samsung talked about usb 2 hdmi cable and think if its real it use some usb video card supported by phone(because of physic material imcompatibily of hdmi nd usb)
May there is a way to dev a tool or hack to get it works...
Aah!! Finally somebody like minded!!
I had been scouring forums for something like this. USB OTG would be an excellent add on to this phone. If not OTG, at least host would be an excellent idea.
No idea whether the existing USB Host driver for Nexus one would work on this one.
The processor on SGS already supports USB Host (not sure about OTG though). This has been pointed out in their press release - w w w .samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/newsView.do?news_id=1043
I am just wondering - should we request Samsung themselves via mass petition to open up this feature on SGS?
some USB devices might be compatible, like the 100/1000 Mbps USB to RJ45 plugs
those same ones works in Windows Mobile it should work as well for Android, however a driver will be required.
mouse and keyboard support should work out of the box
external USB keys for storage, or even USB mass storage devices should work out of the box as well.
usb audio... hmm... not sure what else at the moment
Hi AllGamer
Thanks for the reply. So how exactly do we get this going on SGS?
I am much more interested in having USB HDD support on SGS (hopefully without an ext power source - am I asking for too much? ).
Are you suggesting that the N1 fix should work here also? Can somebody help us with a "How To" to enable this on SGS?
Cheers!!

you can plug in any USB mass storage devices (USB hard drives) and it should work.
However, you might not get enough power from the usb port, you'll still need need power cord for your external usb hard drive.
I know on my HTC windows phones works like that, it should be the same for Android.
I'll try that when i get a chance.
you just a need a USB female to a mini USB male cable
yep!! you are right about power!!! I am trying to get a cable - hopefully in couple of weeks should have this.
but I am wondering if all this would work without proper drivers in it. Would SGS have USB HDD drivers in it already?

I can see one problem, You will only be able to use Fat32 drives unless someone compiles NTFS / HFS+ into the kernel. Ext3/4 is already done so I don't see many problems. What I recommend you do is get some sort of adaptor for Female USB > Micro USB and test it out with a flash stick or you can hack one .
Yeah - I understand the difficulties of having NTFS support outside the MS world.
I didnt know that ext3/4 were already a part of the kernel!! Is this by default available in all Android kernels?
For USB Host cable - I am guessing that this one can be used - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250671106072 (same as what Sven used for N1 USB Host capabilities).
But I seriously doubt plug and play would work (that would be too much of an expectation! )
Does any body have that cable here, who can check out if SGS does actually work in USB Host/OTG mode?
Sven has try with a Galaxy another Host Driver
h t t p : / / sven.killig.de/android/Galaxy/
Hm what can we do with these files?
However, any news about this?
Maybe, we could ask some Galaxy S kernel developers about this.
I tried looking for details about USB OTG but unfortunately i didn't find much. If anyone would tell me is USB OTG a hardware+software feature or is it just a software feature?
Because what i am thinking is maybe if it is a software only feature someone could somehow develop such a software to enable USB OTG in our lovely OB!
Thank you for time and efforts.
It is definetly both: hard and software.
Normal usb hardware for mobiles only allow usb as a device. If the mobile has only such a port, no software can turn this port into usb host mode!
Hardware must enable the usb otg specification, wich allows usb in both mode: host and device.
But even if a mobile has the hardware usb otg port, maybe the software will only allow usb in device mode. Motorola atrix for example has the hardware feature but allow the otg mode only with tricks.
If lg p970 optimus black has the hardware possibilites for usb otg, i´m not sure. I personaly think that this is misssing, because you nearly find nothing about this in the internet.

I know it is in the wrong place but there is already a thread about it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445336
Actually there have been few threads but no developer had taken interest.
I stand corrected
Aprold said he will have a look if it is possible to be enabled.
Can a MOD unite the two threads and move them to appropriate section please?

You need a USB Host to go cable - they are pretty cheap off of ebay.
USB hard drives don't always work - at minimum you will need a powered hub.

i know wht USB on the means but how do i enable it. i have tried connecting with a pendrive with the help of the USb on the cable but it does not show .
Once you plug your on the cable in the phone will inform you that usb connecter s connected. Whatever you plug in at the other end of otg cable work run unless it is not supported.

Just plug it in and look in My files. It will show as usbstorage.
I have an official samsung OTG cable, it works fine on the SGS2, but doesn't appear on the Galaxy Note under usbstorage.
Anyone else out there having similar problems?
i had grab some ebay OtG but after unmount and remove the OTG it causes wakelock which drain alot of juice.
I am also facing problems with OTG . when i plug in the cable thr is not msg nor anything happens in phone. please could any one tell me how to enable it may be with kernel or custom rom or may be anything else.
I also want to know this as well,I have spent considerable time yesterday trying to make this work but no luck at all,I would appreciate if someone could help,as I have seen a video in this forum where the guy was able to.connect a mouse to it stating that it is supported out of the box.
I was able to get it to work with a pendrive and a mouse with no problems, but I couldn't get a keyboard or my 2.5" external drive to mount.
Details:
My OTG cable was from DealExtreme for $2.30 or something.
My pendrive was FAT32 formatted.
My mouse was a basic $10 optical one.
My 2.5" external was NTFS, which probably goes some way to explaining why it didn't work even when I gave it some extra power from my desktop PC too.
My keyboard was a standard USB. I also tried a Logitech keyboard with a wireless USB dongle but that didn't work either.
I watched a whole film off my pendrive with no issues. I messed around with the mouse a bit, but the cursor moved too slowly for my taste and the scroll wheel didn't scroll webpages, which is half the reason I'd plug a mouse in anyway.

If you get no message when the cable is plugged in on it's own, chances are it is a problem with the cable. I bought a cable of Ebay which didn't work, so I bought a different one and that did.

I have a Rooted Motorola Droid 4,running 4.1.2, and would like to be able to pop in USB thumb drives on the fly to transfer files and such. I have a Mini USB adapter to a regular USB and can physically plug it in my phone. But my phone won't recognize it. Is there an apk. or something special I need in order to do this?
