[Q] HTC One only charges when off - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wow, my phone stopped charging. I have TWRP 2.6.3.3, and tried ARHD 81.0, Maximus HD and Stock Rom to see if my battery would start charging again when on, yet it makes no difference.
When off, it does charge (official HTC wall charger, and others as well). For a couple of seconds you see the empty horizontal battery (no filling animation though) with a solid red led and after that it changes to the vertical battery icon which has a filling up animation and a less bright red led. After a couple more second it changes back to the horizontal battery icon, and this process loops indefinitely.
I have tried:
Charge for 20 minutes, then hold the power + vol up + vol down button for 2 minutes, multiple times - doesn't work
Charge for 20 minutes, then hold the power + vol up + vol down button for 2 minutes under a bright light, multiple times - doesn't work
Different chargers, including usb on my computer - doesn't work
Various reboots from bootloader and fastboot - doesn't work
The thing is - it IS charging when off, so the battery can't be broken, right? This must be a software problem. Should I try to flash another kernel or something?

I am facing the same problem. Even I tried changing ROMs. I changed from ARHD 81.0 to Maximum 41.0 and now on crdoid (cynogenmod) but it is not charging. It is exactly in the same state as yours.
I inquired with the HTC service center in my city. They said they need to change the motherboard of the phone which will cost me Rs. 19000 ($310). The amount might vary in your country. I hope there is another solution to this problem except changing the motherboard.

Hi Rahulwadhwani,
I have tried everything, finally decided to go back to stock, because you have a 24 months guarantee period on your device. Tonight I'm gonna bring it back in the shop where I bought it.
If you start reading from here, you can see how I brough it back to stock, I can imagine you face the same things as me when you decide to bring it back to stock too.

I went to the htc service center again. They charged me Rs. 1350 (approx $22) and chanted the charging port of the phone. It's working properly now.
By the way, my phone had a custom rom and was out of warranty too..
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Free mobile app

That's good news, glad you had it sorted out!

I have tried everything as well. And since it DOES charging when off I tend to think it's not port/charger problem.
I chatted with HTC customer support and they told me that developer working on software fix for that which will be distributed over the air (OTA updates). I'm not confident how true is that, but I decide to switch to Maximus HD room from Revolution HD, since the former has OTA updates support.
Things I've tried so far:
Plug-in charger -> power off -> press and hold Power button + volume down for 15+ seconds and put proximity sensor under the bright light
Plug-in charger -> power off -> let it charge for 10+ minutes -> press and hold Power button + volume up + volume down buttons for 2+ minutes -> release them
Reboot the phone into the Safe mode (while charger is plugged in)
Different chargers, car charger, connect to PC
And just for the record - it won't charge even if it's off if Fast Boot is ON.

Let's hope they will come with a software fix. I wonder what that is gonna be though, I have tried so many different roms and firmwares, they made no difference. Other people with the same problem had it fixed by replacing the usb port or even the motherboard.

yep tryed it .. theres a red light on the power button whats that about?
Have you tried removing the charger and battery, then plug the charger back in, wait a few seconds, then put the battery back in (with the charger still connected). This usually solves the ol' red light/no power issue on my hermes. I only normally have to do this though if I accidently let the battery run completely flat.
Other than that, a red flashing LED when the power button is pressed on a sony ericsson device usually indicates an error. The LED flashes error codes based on either hardware or flash problems/errors... though I don't know if this will apply in this case on the basis its completely different hardware/software to "standard" SE devices.
hmm now the red is on constant on the power button i tryed the few things you guys mentioned but no luck maybe it need s a good charge again.. DOHHHH!!
i flicked throught he manual there is no detail about what the red light on the power button means
Hmmm - on my Wizard when the battery went flat I couldn't use a USB cable from the computer I had to charge it from the Wall socket. Your Xperia should have come with a normal plug to plug into a wall socket (you attach your USB cable to that).
why not call the X1 support?
after overnight charging there was no change, so i manged to boot it in flash mode let it on charge for a few min then i reset the phone and bingo it rebooted.. woooohoo
I followed your instructions.
But I cannot boot in flash mode (4colour) even though I charged it for a while, then press and hold Volume Down + Power together.
The illumination lights just flash and turn off.
Is it always like that? If you leave your phone with totally no power in the battery you can not start it later, or you have problems starting it?
I ask because I saw a couple of topics for that issue in the forum. Does everyone have this problem or it's for some devices only?
Do you use the origin SE-charger? I had the problem once and used the charger of the diamond from my wife since I was too lazy going up into the arttic searching for the carton. But the charger of the Diamond has too few ampere, so the battery of the Xperia didn't received enough power. Even using the USB-port of the computer didn't worked well.
So try using the origin charger and also don't let the battery get too low.
aah, I use the original charger of SE X1.
The Cause of problem:
+ I set the alarm. After it had notified, it still snoozed and ran out of battery.
+ I didn't know the current phone without power when I woke up. I turned it on and it had to used little power left inside (the saved power - I guess). From that point, X1 cannot be charged even you plug it all day and all night - different with other phones.
(My Cingular 8125 can be charged after 24hours charging continously).
* Any X1 and other PDA using window CE can suffer that problem.
The Solution:
* For other phones: just plug wallcharge in, after 24hours, it can be charged.
* For X1: You have to come to BOOT MODE (4colours)
(but if doing like above posts, you cannot come to boot mode with no power inside battery)
1. Remove the battery.
2. Plug to wallcharge.
3. Hold the volume Down + Power buttons.
4. Still keeping hold those 2 buttons in one hand, another put the batter back inside.
5. Wait until it turns into Boot Mode, released them and charge in 15 minutes (to make sure that it would receive a little power)
6. Remove the battery and plug back. Restart in Normal Mode and charge it.
* It is my experience after many trials in 9 crazy hours
Thank you for that useful post. It's good to know that there is a way out of that situation.

yeah omg,
thx for this this should be a sticky
i was listening to my music and got an notification that my battery is low, not even 2 minutes later my phone went off
and couldn't put it back on. the weird part is that the 10 prcnt of power drains that fast my music isn't loud (via media xperia panel - phone volume was 100% but music player was full for 2-3 blocks)
but anyway, thx
pek, you're a star. flawless fix.
When my wife's X1i run out of power completely two weeks ago I also first tried to use the original SE charger. No effect after 6 hours charge.
Next I tried my lab power supply which can provide 5V/3A current. It took less than an hour to charge the phone making it fully workable.
My car's charger can fully charge X1 from 20% battery to 100% in less than 45 minutes. 2A maximum current restricted. Fast charge seems have no influence on battery's life.
Also if you have a wall charger for X1 battery you can charge it outside the phone for some time (20 minutes usually enough). Also works.

[Q] Brand new Nexus One can't be powered on

I have a brand new Nexus One bought on last year April. For some reason it wasn't to be used. Yesterday, I got it out of the package and charged it for ready to be powered on. Unfortunately, it reacted nothing as I pressed the power button! I took out the battery and put it into other Nexus One, it showed the battery was 100% charged.
I took back the battery and repacked it to this new Nexus One. I tried to press the power button more and more with data cable connected pc. Nothing happened. Just one time, the sceen lighted on and the "X" in four colors appeared! I didn't know why it was powered on. Maybe I pressed the trackball or volume up/down buttons, God know it.
The X sceen lasted almost for ten minutes and then sceen was off! Yes. It shutdown! I can't power it on anymore!
It seemed the hardware was OK. It may be the locked by the outdate android system. The android prestored in this phone is version 2.1.
Any advice is welcome. Thanks.
Can u you go in fastboot? Press power button+trackball..if so then you can recover your phone by unlocking bootloader and falshing custom recovery.
Sadly, It can't be power on and go in fastboot by pressing trackball+power button.
Any more advice?
Check the battery terminals just to make sure they're not dirty.. Sadly, you MUST be able to at least be able to boot something (hboot/fastboot) in order to troubleshoot anything software related. Sounds like you've got a hardware issue that could be one of (literally) a million things.
Sell it on EBay for parts. You can probably get $50-$60
you could try pressing pwr/vol-/trackball all at same time, hold down for around 30 seconds to make sure
commonly known as 3 finger salute
try power on without sdcard by manual methods and plugging in and plugging in with no battery
I have seen a video on YouTube on how to fix the power button which is known for messing up and how to turn it on. Search YouTube
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
is it that the power button is not working? that would be weird for a new phone though.
have you tried to turn it on using the "jump start" method?
connect the cable. led the charging led come on. remove the battery, wait for the led to go off (while cable is still connected) then pop the battery back in.
see if you can get it to start that way
When you plug charger cable in your Nexus, does the orange or green LED go on?
If one of them does and stays (green for full battery, orange otherwise) - then your problem is most likely the power button. It may not be the only problem, but at least the one that's stopping you from turning on your phone. You can try "jumpstarting" it by inserting battery while charger is connected.
If you don't see LEDs when plugged in - your phone is done.
If you see blinking LEDs - battery terminals might need cleaning/fixing, it usually happens when the battery is out of the phone.

[Q] Daily lock up while charging

Hello,
I am currently using an ATT branded 64 GB HTC One. The Phone is locked and stock except for a few play applications I've downloaded
Nearly every day that I connect the phone to the charger for an extended period of time I will come back to it and it will be frozen, the notification LED will be solid just like its charging normally but the screen will not wake, when the phone is disconnected from the charger the LED stays solid red as if it was still plugged in. At this point I will hold the power button until the phone powers off (or at least seems to, the screen backlight is not on and the LED goes black) and then hold the power button again and it will boot. The more serious problem I've been running in to is after powering down the phone down sometimes it will not power back on again regardless of how long I hold the power button for (I haven't gone over 1:30 of holding the button often but I have tried it). The phone seems dead for either a few minutes or a few hours. Here are some other observations I've made...
- I've had the phone "lock up" on 3 different chargers, HTC bundled charger, generic USB, and the one bundled with my Nexus 4.
- I've thought maybe the phone isn't charging while I am away and when the phone will not wake up maybe it is completely dead so I've hooked it up for about ~15-60 minutes and tried powering the phone up on the above 3 chargers, a Lumia 920 charger, car charger, and charging off computers USB port. None of these seem to have any affect on waking the phone up.
- The time between powering off and when it will power back on seems to be getting longer? I am currently with the dead One, it died about 12 hours ago before bed, tried to power it on last night and again this morning after leaving it on the charger. The closest to powering on that I got was the screen flashed white for a millisecond. Tried to power it back on many times this morning and no go.
- The phone hasn't frozen away from home, but I've only charge it from USB from my PC at work.
Right now I am leaning toward contacting ATT to see if I can arrange an exchange, I'm out of ideas at this point.

[Q] HTC One M7, won't power up, charge, no LED, screen nothing

I was with Telus, and entered unlock code for carrier unlock few months ago, and 3 days ago. My HTC battery drained, it will no longer able to turn on, when I plug original cable and charger, no LED, and screen also blank as did not turn on at all. I did research on google, noticed lot of people had similar problem. I follow procedures at XDA below,
1. plug original sync cable and charger to phone for 10-20 minutes (I plug it over a day)
2. press and hold at the same time 3 buttons at the same time POWER, Vol +, Vol - for 2 minutes, i also tried 5 minutes as well.
3. after that release all buttons at the same time.
no luck, nothing happen.
I also tried plug sync cable to computer, I hear USB cable plug-in sound on computer, charged also 30 minutes, and did step 2 & 3 again.
same result, nothing happen as well.
Is there anyone can help me for this? Because I just went on vacation and got back, I was not able to backup all photos during vacation, so I do not want to lost all data and photos in phone.

Try holding the power button and volume down buttons down, while holding the proximity sensor directly under a very bright light (sensor is top left on phone)

Note 8 crashes hard if it goes to sleep with Flir One IR camera connected

I got a Flir One LT USB C camera a little while back. It seems to work fine until the phone goes to sleep. I think the issue is if the camera is on and/or the app is open when the phone goes to sleep after 1 minute it will never come back on. You have to let the battery drain to shutoff. Then it will come back after you charge it later. This is the 3rd time it's happened to me & it's getting super frustrating.
Things that haven't worked:
Power button
Power button for 30+ seconds
Power button + vol up or vol down
Power button + vol up or vol down for 30+ seconds
USB C power
Wireless power (light on charger does go green like it's charging)
Plugging it into 2 separate PCs with ADB & drivers installed, one of which was probably previously working with ADB & permissions to the phone (Windows can't recognize this USB device...)
Anybody have any insight on how to avoid waiting a day or so for the battery to die to start charging it & getting the phone usable? Any ideas on why the camera can crash the phone that hard when it goes to sleep?
