(Q) chat or teamspeak 3 idea. - Off-topic

Would it not be great to get help using chat or teamspeak 3?
Maybe a chatroom would be nice . If enough is interested I'd buy a teamspeak server for help. Every language is welcome!
Is this a good idea yes or no ?

I think it's a very nice idea to have a temspeak server. But only if enough people are online. With various language channels.
And teamspeak has also the ability to chat so the chatroom wouldn't be needed then.
Or maybe also a gaming channel would be nice to play bf4, csgo or any other multiplayer with xda people

Teamspeak, now there's nostalgia... Miss my old clanmates
TS server might not be a bad idea, maybe do something like help-rooms too for people who just can't work with written text. (I'm overthinking this, I know.)
As for chat, anyone still use Xfire?

Anything is possible
Services are not free but fairly cheap depending on maximum slots
Uptime is 99% of the time. The 1% is ISP downtime when they do maintaince.

Been on vacation for two weeks now. Come back from my vacation and with horror i read what M$ have done; No roms on this site anymore......words cannot express my sorrow.........where are we going to
what do you mean ? most of the roms will be relocated to p2p networks, torrents or free filesharing sites
Muahhh!!!
This is what Mocrosoft has rached.
The Scene has just moved to the Underground!
Instead of using the possibilties and advantages of an interested and active
Community they just moved the whole to the Underground.
One time again Microsoft looses 100 Point in my eyes!
Well In the PC area Linux is developing quiet fast to be able to rival with the MS Systems. What a pity that on the mobile Device Scene there isn't the same!
Sorry for my bad english.
!God bless the XDA-Developres!
how to keep track

there must surely be a more effective way to do this. Google is great but not efficient and hence time consuming.
what is a good idea is what explode has done, but i fear M$ will quickly catch on
Well maybe the comunnity should buy a server in Papua New Guinea.
Or a another Country that doesn't like M$

PC admin app

I haven't found anything yet to satisfy this requirement so I'm asking for re-inforcement here. My requirements are:
1) Install a client on my kids PC that will be password protected so that it can't be uninstalled and which will allow the following:
2) Allow administration tool both on PC and Android device to remotely view the state of the PC (ON/OFF) and what it currently does (specific website visited, application being used, etc.) as well as to remotely shutdown and view screenshot.
3) I want this to be accessible not only from LAN (like netsupport) but also from Internet via 3G.
So far, I haven't found anything to satisfy this requirement. If anyone knows of any tool to do this well, it's more that welcome to recommend.
Why not just setup a keylogger and have the logs sent directly to your phone's email, granted it won't give you the access you want but everything will be visible.

Thanks.
I don'r need that kind of control. I only need to know if the PC is ON and be able to swtch it OFF remotely when I want and just know what my son is doing at that time. i.e. playing games, watching youtube videos, etc.
I have used similar tools but none of them can provide all the requirements in one tool.
I have used OpenDNS and Norton Family online to control his hours and allowed sites to visit but I can't do the rest. I believe there must be an application like that because what I ask is simple and there are more complex tools available already.
So TeamViewer is what you need.
alternatively you could stop playing stalin to your kids

nope, teamviewer is a remote desktop control application. Nothing similar to what I am looking for.

How old are you? do you have kids? I bet not otherwise you wouldn't think like that. When you do have kids you'll want to control the time they spent on the computer as well as the sites they visit and it's not a metter of playing Stalin or the diictator. It's a matter of manipulating their habbits and discipline.
However, that's another story and everyone can have their opinion so let's not discuss this here because it will be a non-ending story of social nature and other people here are not interested.

Sorry i didnt mean any offence, im sure your a great parent, it just comes across a tad OTT. (not that thats a bad thing) anyway back on topic, i think you may need a small laptop or netbook to fullfill your requirements, as i havent see an android application that can do what you want

Hi andreasy. I have an 3 years old little girl and I know that one day I'll need a kind of control of this. I'm planning to have a small linux proxy on my home net to block sites by hour/user/blacklist etc... but, I'm a Net. Admin and it's a simple job (to me).
Maybe you are searching on wrong places. Or you want a not yet developed software.
I'll do a little research to see if i can find anything abou this.

Well I am a systems engineer as well and I was also thinking the gateway thing, but then I decided that I don't want an extra device in my home for this. Anyway, I solved the parental (inapropriate content) issue with OpenDNS and Norton family (Try them, they are free) and I was also considering Child Control which I evaluated in the past and it's quite cheap to buy. Now my only issue is that my son abuses the time policy and finds ways to bypass Norton Family rules.
Anyway, I guess the truth is your second point. "not yet developed software."
Thanks anyway.
I'll live with some scripts I wrote then which I'll have to make better.
i guess this might help u http://softwareforme.com/?page_id=6

That's simply because girls are already drawn to Facebook and wouldn't want to port over all their info from Facebook to Google+ if they have all their friends on Facebook.
I'm not saying Google+ will beat Facebook, but it's not impossible. I have hope.

i didnt realize i needed a social network to score women. i was under the impression that im already popular with the ladies and can get some, like i said, without a social network.
either way, there will come a certain point in time where google+ might possibly overtake facebook. just like facebook overtook myspace. and all other social networking sites. although im not sure if it will be apple friendly. that might affect the popularity.

You obviously missed my point.
Without female support social networking would've never reached it's current height, it would be just another internet pipe dream. Whether it's guys trying to "pick up chicks" or just the fact that women are ~50% of the population, having a female presence is essential if Google+ is to get anywhere.

Fairly basic maths really. 'How to unblock...' is a subset of what Google can do, therefore Google does indeed equal more than just that
Just don't bother.
That you have come to XDA to ask suggests you don't have the skills to hack the work web filter, it may be an ASA with a CSC module or similar.

To be brutally honest with you dude;-
You are at WORK. They are paying you to work, not to fu*k around with your phone. I used to have a colleague who played around with his phone at work while the rest of us actually did his job - he didn't last for long.
Keep your work at work and play with your toys in your own time, rather than trying to get one over on your employer

Did you even bother to actually read to OP and the thread, or did you just read a couple of words and decided to post this pointless answer?
If the OP's company blocks hosting sites, TOR installers etc then I don't think simply trying to use https will acheive anything - do you?
ever try underget.com? I worked for me for a few weeks, until one day I tried it, and was blocked.
I was in a similar situation. I feel if my job is done, I should be able to relax *a little*.
I know employers will never agree, and that we should be helping others who cant finish their jobs, or go clean the office, etc..
You can always upgrade your mobile data plan, and download from your phone/device. Is there a free (unblocked)wifi in the area you could utilize?
happy hacking... I can relate. I used to have a virtual machine running ubuntu, building kernels in my free time.
If you change your OP to: how to get to blocked sites so I can develop Sooper Awesome Kernel and Rom for Device XYZ, I some people would have been more inclined to help...
part of me says, yeah i should be "working", the other half says do what I feel, and I end up usually browsing the web.. and laughing my butt off to the off topic images thread... lol

That only works if the web filter is crap and the website is also running on port 443 which most don't.
OP now I'm with you, I used to work 12 hour shifts in IT at night and weekends, we used the office modem to play online games etc, and also watch DVDs.
You could talk nicely to your IT guys and see if they can make an exception for you.
Use your phone as a USB modem and download via that. If your company has blocked access to certain sites then you're risking getting sacked if you find a way to access them. Respect your company's wishes and stop trying to stumble your way around their security.

From the developer setup / whitelisting page: (developer.google.com/cast/whitelisting)
"Two (2) URLs for the location of your receiver app, typically one for QA and one for production, on your server."
This meens that you simply need a publicly accessable qualified address that google can link your APP-ID/Serial# to.
AKA, a website host or publicly accessable server by URL.
So yes, a free hosted website would work to house your receiver code.

I don't suppose they let me do a localhost. Also unfortunately my IP address is DHCP so it does rotate from time to time.

He wants to tinker. Minimal investment. VPS is overkill. Even a free hosted public addressable 10MB site would be sufficient for most novice's starting with Chromecast dev.
All you're hosting is the receiver html, and any associated assets in it. It's TINY in most cases.
Not everyone has ~$25 a month to throw away on a VPS.
You're entitled to your opinion, but I still think you're pushing overkill.
GreenDroidX, sorry but I do not actually know of any. Hope someone can give you a good suggestion though.

He mentioned he wasnts to run Java and access to lower levels on a server. For that you would want a VPS and you can get a decent unmanaged vps for like $10 a month. I personally pay $7 a month for a VPS with 512 mbs of ram and 512 burst ram.
Thats just my recomendation. If he wants to get some crappy free host that dies because they are letting people do processor intensive stuff for free then thats fine too.

Ok. So I got involved enough in this topic to do my own research. And what I've found would be a free solution for a VPS via Amazon AWS. "The AWS Free Tier includes 750 hours of Linux and Windows Micro Instances each month for one year"
Not gonna link it, just google Amazon AWS.
You can run a "Free Tier EC2 Instance" that is more then enough to handle server side needs and public addressing requirements to whitelisting.
Thank you to both unholyfire and firesoul, I will try to give Amazon a try. I also found http://www.freehostingeu.com/ seems easier than the Amazon one.

I am using the dropbox public folder, but that only allows you upload static content like the receiver.
I always use Heroku (https://www.heroku.com) for things like this.
