First of all, let me start of what I've tried doing, in order.
New SIM-card, factory reset, unlock + root, custom ICS (VirtousQuattro).
None of the above solved my problem, it still persists! The problem is, the phone disconnects completely from the network (no bars) and I can't manually search for a new provider due "active package transmission" or something like that, it stays disconnected for 1-3 minutes and then reconnects. It happens fairly often, like once for every 5 times I try using the phone. I haven't noticed the problem when being connected to a WiFi, so I'd assume the problem is related to an issue between the phone and the network.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any idea how to solve it?
Have you tried flashing a new Radio? I can't see how that would differ from flashing a custom ROM, but might be worth a shot?

I haven't tried that, I might in a couple of days if nobody has any other solution though.. I've had the problem for a couple of weeks so I'm kind of used to it!

So much for being "unlocked". Also, hey mate
Yes Naforcee, I have exactly the same problem. And it never happens while using wifi as you said.
It started immediately after I updated to Sense 3 / Android 2.3.5 from HTC.
What was the version of Android in your previous Rom? I had issues when I was on Froyo and went to Gingerbread without flashing a new radio.

I had 2.3.5 earlier, so that'd be GB. Same problems with ICS now though =/

Don't think it's a physical problem, I have perfect connection and it just dies out for about 2 min until it reconnects, and I can't search for network when it's down due to active packet transfer..
Could try a new SIM card. Might not fix it, but worth a shot - I've seen this posted as a fix for other people.
I used to have this problem on certain radios on the Desire Z, after flashing around a bunch of radios to try all of them. Stuck with one and it went away, so it was software for me.

Try flashing this radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471861 using the ADB method. If that doesn't help I recommend doing a full wipe and reinstalling the ROM. There are a lot of different custom ROMs for IncS which can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136463
I personally like Niks ROM and Android Revolution HD.
Looks like rom installation issue.
My son's Inc-S having a similar problem to the OP, but more severe. A couple of weeks ago he entered airplane mode with all behaving normally, but since exiting airplane mode at the end of the flight he hasn't been able to register on the network (voice or data). We've tried:
fiddling with all the network settings
change sims (all sims work on my Inc2, none work on his IncS)
cleaning the antenna connections
reboot
factory reset
flashing new ROM (Android Revolution HD 2.3.0)
flashing new radio (3805.10.03.29_M)
So far, no satisfaction. We're still seeing no bars of reception (with an X) in the notification area, and don't have the option to manually or automatically register with any network operator (although several occasionally show up as options under "Search Networks"). We usually get the error message, "Unable to search for network while packet connection is active" when trying to select a network. Funny thing is, mobile network data has been shut off on his phone for the past month so the packet connection is definitely not active (wifi is on). Based on a network signal analyzer app, the phone is receiving the same mobile network signal as mine (-65 to -70 db) when they are side-by-side, so the problem does not appear to be in the antenna. The phone works just fine using wifi but is useless as a phone.
Any ideas about what to try next?

Probably a RIL-Radio communication issue. Recommended radio is the newer 3822.01.08.14_M radio, so maybe you should try that.
I recently got the lg optimus x2. It is running on 2.3.4.
Initially, the wifi connected but 3g was not recognised even though data roaming and access was enabled. However, now i cannot even connect to wifi. It keeps saying 'obtaining ip add' and then fails.
Going through various google searches I have messed around with the settings, set apn to default. Done factory reset. Disconnected, reconnected, changed sim cards, tried 2g, messed around with vpn, selected all network mode's but nothing seems to work. I have contemplated rooting the phone but doubt this will do anything?
This is extremely frustrating considering the "amazing" reviews the phone has one expects a simple tool such as wireless connection to work.
Would be grateful if anybody had any other ways to possibly resolve the issue?????
Thanks

There are two things you could do ...
1. Return the LG 2X - if that's still possible
2. Switch to a Custom ROM
Installing the first official LG update to my phone was a major setback for me as a lot of things stopped working, that worked before. But switching to a Custom ROM made me a happy man.
Have you considered trying out e.g. DjangoManouche (2.3.x) it is based on the stock ROM but has massive improvements built in.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410662
If you feel like you want the ICS experience there is NovaHD (based on CM9)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508492
The only glitch with CM9 is, that there are currently no drivers for the Tegra2 chipset released which results in lack of FullHD video recording, beside that the ROM works like a charm.
I am running NovaHD on my 2x now and not willing to go back to Gingerbread ;-)
If there is anything I can help you with, just let me know!
Cheers!

I cant download clockworld mode...so i tried to do it through the computer...and now the phone wont switch on
Hi,
that doesn't sound too good - did you follow any instructions installing clockworkmod?
I installed it using RomManager on the phone itself, worked like a charm.
Did you root your phone already?
I couldn't install it directly as i had no 3g/wifi (initial issue)...after i transferred the Nova Hd file into the SD, installed clockworld through PC and attempted a restart it wouldnt switch back on
Have you tried removing the battery and inserting it again? - Did you turn on the phone while pressing volume down (until the first LG logo disappears)?
This should then boot into clockwork recovery if you installed it correctly before.

done both, nothing works- phone is dead as a brick
This might be a dumb question, but has the battery still power? Have you tried with the power cord attached?
Is there nothing on the screen, no lights blinking? Brick dead?
Does this sound similar?

After the wifi fix ( thanks to all devs who worked hard for that ) I am able to connect to my wifi.
But the problem is, I am not able to access my internet. The problem is the same for all JB ROMS(CM 10, miui v5). All I get is short bursts of access to internet during which webpage loads for a bit and just sticks there. Can't access the playstore too. It just gets stuck at signing in.
My wi-fi is good as I am using the same on my laptop.
Can't seem to figure out what the problem is and am sadly stuck on ICS.
Any help would be great...

That's what confuses me...How come is it only me having this problem..
I have tried flashing the ROM for 4-5 times now but each time it's the same...
Have tried doing complete wipe, with and without wiping /system, tried both prometheus and NOPE kernels but the problem persists.
And its the same for cm10 and MIUI v5...haven't tried any other JB based ROMS.
Maybe i shall try to turn off security in my wifi..(can that by any chance be causing it??)
Tunring off wifi security can only cause people freeloading on your wifi. I dont know about the problem.
You could turn off password authentication and filter by MAC address, just to be safe and be able to test at the same time. Although, I had no problems on connecting to secure networks. There is an authentication problem on reconnect, though.
Finally solved..
Got my wi-fi to work finally....
The problem apparently was with encryption....got an idea from this HOX thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1989203
I earlier used to have a AES+TKIP encryption with WPA-PSK authentication....changing network authentication mode to OPEN made it work instantly.
But open connection = freeloaders...so tried a combination of WPA-PSK and TKIP and it worked too...haven't checked it with AES...
Finally wi-fi is working...
Thanks to everyone who tried to help out....i really appreciate it...

Further the wifi now disconnects only if no wifi related task is continuing and the phones locks up.
If a download is going on, it continues even after phone gets locked.
Just thought I should share that...
EDIT: airplane mode trick + wifi keep alive app (kudos to webhijacker for finding it out) does solve the Wi-fi issues..

First step when you want to troubleshoot an issue is to return back to stock rom and firmware to determine if the problem is software or hardware.

How can you be sure of this? Hardware damage can happen for many reasons; overheating chips, loose antenna, loose connectors etc etc.... Th eonly way to be 100% sure its not software related is to go back 100% stock.
And just in case (im pretty sure you already tried it) make sure its not related to your wifi rooter. Try using another one, even if other devices are working fine using this rooted doesn't mean your rooter is not the culprit.
