So guys, I bought the phone on the day of its launch in India.
And, its not really an issue, but many a times, I get a small error that says
"Failed to Initialize Camera" in the Camera app or the apps that require Camera (Snapchat).
I tried clearing the data of the Camera app. Didn't seem to work.
I can take pictures and record videos. But the error just keeps bugging me and makes me feel like I got a faulty phone. -_-
Same here!
Exactly same problem with my device I hope it will be fixed in Android L update
1. Use third-party camera apps like Lenevo SnapIt Camera, Camera 360, Google Camera.
2. Go to Settings > Apps > All > Camera > Clear data and cache and reboot.
3. Boot into recovery and clear cache and reboot.
If all these steps fail its better you get a replacement.
Yeah, same thing with my device... I think this is due to moto g's background apps killing issue. When we open camera app i kills camera process for every other app and when that happens we get "failed to initialize camera". The message is not related to camera app, but to some other app after you open camera, probably some 3rd party app.

You are absolutely right. Motorola has still not responded on the app killing issue reported in moto forums.
I have same issue with my gnote3. I retired my atrix and used my note3 as dashcam for a few days until moto g came in the mail. I used dailyroads voyager app for dashcam. If I had Samsung camera app in ram camera would not initialize. I always had to reboot until I figured out to clear all app memory and it would start fine. Perhaps this is similar issue. More than one app utilizing camera and locking it in so other app can't initialize. I suggest clearing all ram. Maybe this work for moto g too. If not then serious bug moto needs to address. Well, actually all manufacturers and/or google need to address because one app hogging camera resources sucks. Especially when you want to take a picture.

After the Verizon OTA JB update (4.1.2), My Gallery will not open. It just says "Error while launching application." The default camera app does the same thing.
Third party apps (LittlePhoto and Camera ZOOM FX) seem to be working fine, and I am looking for a good Gallery app in case I cannot get this fixed.
I tried clearing data/cash for Gallery app. I found somewhere that this was supposed to fix this problem. It didn't.
Anyone know how to fix this?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

i would just wipe data in recovery
you will need to backup, texts, call logs, contacts… if you want to save
how to.. in my list

Really hoping there is an easier way to fix this. Looks like several people have the problem (judging by a google search), but no solutions yet.
Motorola's "My Gallery" was removed by the update and replaced with Google "Gallery" app.
If My Gallery is still listed (and tied to the camera) it sounds like your install didn't install completely or you restored things after the update.
You may want to flash the JB fastboot files, factory reset and reconfigure.
That was it! Looks like the camera app was also replaced. I was using App Manager. It kept the "links" to the old apps in the icon folders. After removing the old camera and gallery icons, and then adding the new ones, everything works fine.
Thanks tcrews!

I need some help guys everytime I try to open my camera app it crashes immediately saying "camera has stopped unexpectedly" I've cleared the app data I've cleared the cache wiped the phone clean but same results. I've read up on a few post about a app called last past I think that's the name but I don't even have that app on my phone and that app occurred mainly with m8 users giving them problems with the camera so I don't know why my camera app keeps crashing (including front camera). Notes (I'm not rooted no modifications on the phone, I have two third party apps showbox and whatsapp plus) any ideas or fix? Below you will see pics of the error reports
I'm running the latest stock rooted (2.16.651.4) and just tried to use the Zoe function in camera. It's the first time I've tried to use it since the update, and it's crashing the camera app left and right. When I switch from any other function to Zoe, crash. I bring camera back up, and it'll be in Zoe, but half of the time, it'll crash right away again. If it does stay up, it seems to work until I switch away and back again.
My question is, could anyone share the apk for camera (assuming it'll contain all of the functions including Zoe) so I can try to reload the app? Or if anyone knows of a different fix, I'm certainly open to suggestions. Thanks.

Try clearing the App Cache in the App Settings to reset the camera to the default settings.
Edit: Interestingly enough, my camera app crashes when I switch to Zoe, but without a crash alert (not sure if my custom Rom has blocked those). The difference is that u can open my camera into Zoe, and successfully capture Zoe images.
That's almost identical to my problem. No crash alert, the app just goes down. If, by stroke of luck, I can get it to run with Zoe, I can take images just fine. The problem shows back up when I try to use any other camera function then go back to Zoe.
I did get one error, systemui crashed and it was the report or not error, but that only happened once.
I cleared the cache, and while it doesn't crash 8 out of 10 times, it'll still go down like 4 out of 10. If I cleared the app data, would that smoke my pictures or anything?

No. It only clears the App data for the camera, making it as 8f you opened the camera for the first time, pop-up tips and all.
Well, I cleared the app data, and while it didn't completely fix things, it's definitely crashing less. If I last used the camera in Zoe, the next camera launch crashes, along with a random crash when switching from another function to Zoe. It certainly ain't perfect, it'll do for now I suppose.

Factory reset or flash back stock rom
Hi,
Trying to use facebook in-app camera, gives a white screen. If you read very carefully, you can see that it displays a message: "sorry, the camera is not working right now . you mightneed to close any other camera apps you have running" . Turning your screen off, and immediately on again, the camera works like a charm. No other apps seem te have problems accessing the camera. All permissions are OK. Facebook app itselve works great, and starts the camera from the first time. So the problem seems to be isolated to the FB messenger app. Installing older versions to no avail... uninstalling other applications using camera... no avail.
Any thoughts?
