Hello,
I am using a rooted (stock) G2. I upgraded (via unrooting then re-rooting) to 4.4.2 a while back when it came out. Then, all of a sudden, yesterday, my phone started downloading MUC 6.4.1.5_E02 (which I thought was old by now). Now, it keeps asking me to install it -- which I cannot because, of course, I am rooted. How do I either: (a) just get rid of/disable this update from installing, or (b) should I install it, which would, again, require un-rooting then re-rooting. Is MUC 6.4.1.5_E02 important/cool/necessary? What is it exactly?
My phone is currently using:
Baseband:
VS98024A-M8974A-AAAANAZM-2.0.20046
Kernel:
3.4.0-perf-gdf89a11
[email protected]
Build:
KOT49l.VS98024A
Software ver:

No custom recovery.
Thank you!

What is the best way to temp un-root? I see an option in SuperSU, but it says "permanent unroot." I want to just temporarily unroot for updating purposes, then go right back. What's the best way to do this?

I did not unroot to update and retained root after the update... If you lose root, I heard stump root will root 26a.
Sent from my Xposed G2
my understanding is that if you're rooted with stock recovery then u can take 26a without unrooting, but if you have a custom recovery then you need to flash the updated rom manually or restore stock recovery before taking the ota.
I'm still on 24a tho with no experience with 26a

Help! Accidentally clicked on the update button that popped up and have root
I do have my phone rooted, but as stated above, the update software pop up box kept popping up and I accidentally clicked on the update button. My phone went into the twrp backup screen where I was told the only thing I could do was revert back to a previously saved backup. I tried this and now I can't even get my phone to turn on. If I hold the power and volume down buttons at the same time I just get vibration from the phone but the screen doesn't turn on. When I plug the phone in, it displays the LG start up display and nothing else, it will stay on that display even when I unplug then... So the big question, can I save my phone? I had a buddy do the roots am unaware of how to save it. Thanks for the replies in advance.

I figured, I would get the best response here... If you ROOT an Android phone, will downloading OTA updates through your phone brick it? I read an article about the new OTA for the EVO and it will brick rooted devices.
Misinformation. It would brick it if you applied it twice in sequence, not if you were rooted. You need the stock recovery to apply updates anyway, if you do get one it will not harm the phone because it can't be applied.
In the thread when the final OTA was coming out, lots of people that were rooted, said they installed it, it worked fine, but they lost root. So then they have to obtain root again.
So, I'd assume it would work fine if everything else was stock... you just might loose root.
So your saying, that if I were to install an OTA update through a rooted Android device running stock firmware, it would go through successfully without bricking it. But, if I ran the update a second time it would brick it. Correct?
If you're on a rooted stock rom, assuming you haven't flashed a custom recovery, the phone's recovery utility will not allow you to flash an OTA update because of a signature mismatch. I'm not sure what happened with the evo, but I don't believe it can happen with the nexus.
Okay, thanks? But I would still like some more input on this situation.
Pay attention

If your not rooted you can still flash OTA update leaks, there are plenty out there. If you want custom roms then you have to root. The stock recovery only flashes stock updates, not rooted updates. If your not getting it by reading the forums, then I suggest you stay on stock, and wait for OTA update.

No, this only happens with this specific update with the EVO.
Alright, great! Thanks guys. So since I believe the nexus one already got the offical OTA, did any of you lose ROOT access?
You WILL loose root when you update from an OTA update.
I had a rooted FRF50 and went to the FRF83 update and lost root/custom recovery, everything else was fine though.
I ask that you all forgiveth the newb nature of my question in advance, but if my phone has been rooted, and is currently running FRF50, is there anything I can do to the phone to have it automatically update using OTA? I ask because I received the notice for the OTA update the other day, but being rooted, got a signature mismatch error. (The only reason my phone is rooted is bc I bought it used that way-I wish I could've had it bone stock instead!) I know I can somehow do a manual update, but I'm trying to figure out for further future OTA updates if there's a way that I can have my phone simply automatically apply them.
Well, first off, thanks for hijacking.... AND, I have been doing a bunch of research. You should find the official build of froyo (FRF85B correct?) and manually update it. Just use it unrooted and it'll be easier when an OTA update comes along
I rooted my Nexus One with the 1-click androot and today I've received the 2.2.1 update (FRG83) OTA. I don't want to install it because it'll unroot, but the notification is really persistent and irritating, and I'm afraid I'm going to accidentally hit the install button.
How can I make it go away?
Install a custom recovery, make sure it works, try to flash the rom, it will fail because it needs to stock recovery to install, delete the update from /cache/.
That will at least leave you with a little time before it tries to notify you again. Best thing to do is load a rooted custom rom with a build.prop mod to make it think it's a version better/same so it won't try and update you.
I thought I had to have an unlocked bootloader in order to install a custom recovery or flash custom roms. Is this not the case?
I also have rooted with the one click but have clockworkmod recovery with stock rom. I just received the update ota and I am confused as to what would happen if I attempt to install it. Will it just abort or will it brick the device? Would just a battery pull and reboot be all thats necessary? Has any new roots come out for this update? I really dont want to lose my root. Any and all help is appreciated.

I was in the same boat as you yesterday. I didn't think of the recovery so I hit update because I was tired of the notification. The phone applied the update successfully and I don't have root anymore. I have no idea how that impacts the recovery since ClockworkMod says the ClockworkMod recovery is installed.
Would like to know as well. Do not want to lose one-click root and would love to get rid of that stupid notification.

this user says he has gotten it to stop via this method. I cannot verify yet as I have not received the OTA
For me that seems to have stopped the OTA nagg screen.
Using quickboot to reboot then clearing the notification, I have not got another OTA nagg screen. I like the 1 click root, turn on when needed off when not.

Thank you! I don't know why Quick Boot worked, but it seems that it has. It's now been a couple of hours without a notification message when they were coming back every few minutes. Thanks!

If you have rooted 24A with a stock recovery, you can take the OTA and retain root..
Ok so I figured I'd ask here instead of making a new thread since it's sort of relevant. Hope not to thread jack. I have a vs980 rooted on 24a with stock rom and twrp. My phone tried to update to 25b yesterday and I canceled it by switching from WiFi to 4g. 2 questions I have are can I take the update and stay the same or not yet since I have twrp? And 2 it started downloading automatically, if I can't take the update is there a way to keep it from downloading again? Thanks in advance.

1) It won't install without the factory recovery.
2) You have to remove/disable/freeze the updater app to stop it from prompting you. (I don't remember the exact name of it)
So there really isn't any harm in letting it download since it won't install without factory recovery? I'll check the apps I have frozen again I thought I froze it, but maybe not. Thanks. Do you know if it's simply called system updates?
Software Update is the app name people are freezing using Titanium, don't know what the .apk is, I have a debloated rom currently. You should be able to find and rename the .apk for Software Update to stop it.
I've been using ultimate backup lite and I have a system update app I could freeze just wanted to make sure it was the right one. Tried to post a picture, but I don't have enough seniority.
is ioroot still the best rooting tool?
Also when I take 25 will I have to reinstall twrp?

Just repeating what someone said in the other update thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g2/general/25b-coming-t2874367
I rooted my phone a while back (Note 3) and have Safestrap on it. I checked with root verify and it says it is rooted.
I want to be able to do OTA updates as I don't really want to be rooted any longer or have safestrap on my phone.
Is there a EASY way to remove both/all of it so I no longer get the safestrap screen when it comes on that has the unlocked symbol at the bottom of it. And no longer have a rooted phone ?
Easy way, preferred as I stated before..
Saw this and giving it a try ! ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/help/4-4-4-ota-failed-27-t2949069
Well used Super Su, it says I am no longer rooted. But safestrap still shows on start up
And after I did that I checked for a update. It shows v4.2.2 and no available updates ? WTH.... It showed a update before...
Idk either I unrooted and uninstalled safestrap and factory reset my update trys 2times both times says updated failed
is safestrap realy there. i had the same problem and installed traingle away and it removed the safestrap screen.
To Un-root your phone
You'll need to use Odin. After using Odin it will still say custom after the first boot, just re-boot and you'll be good.
I used Super SU, and unrooted. Did check and it says I am not rooted.
But I think the reason it is failing to install 4.4.4 OTA update, is that the safestrap is interfering with the installation..
So if I want to get safestrap completely off of my phone how do I do that > I have been searching the forum, and still searching,,,
Trying to find Stock Recovery Files for the SM-N900A 4.v if possible.
Then I can install via odin ?
Thanks..
Is back to full stock, but I can't update for 14 more hours.
Wish there was a way to push the update..

Lol you might as well not be on xda if you going to go stock with no root. 4.4.4 OTA official is like a death sentence right now. And you will be hitting your forhead wishing you didnt do that later.
But to answer your question, just uninstall safestrap from the app, and use supersu for full unroot. Or just Odin back with NC2 tar files from the threads. Odin back to NC2 should be no problems with the OTA

Well when I had my other Samsung phone I use to install updates all the time, different roms or what ever.
But now I just want to be stock, and knew all the people on this forum do it a lot. So this is where I asked for help...
It is on 4.4.2 and says now that no update is available ? I have already tried the date change trick ! Strange I can't get a update now...Wonder why ?
Now it says I can check again in 735 hours ?

That is kinda weird in SuperSU did you disable OTA updates?!? But y you want stock 4.4.4 rom, as AT&T note 3 users there may not b a root or boot rom walk around for long time maybe even tell lollipop 5.0 or maybe never cause note 3 has been dead silence since 4.4.4 released almost like people stop using this device an goin to the note 4... Hopefully there will b a note 3 bootloader exploit for AT&T an verizon but idk again looks like main force is note 4
Well not sure how to fix it.
I have unrooted, removed safestrap.
Checked with root app and it says it is not rooted.
But it still won't update.
Took to AT&T tech center after on-line help from them didn't help. He was not able to update it. So I went to Bestbuys Samsung tech section. They hooked it up to their Smart update software, and it would not allow to be updated either. They said it was either rooted or had a foreign version of software on it. Or one of the software apps I had installed was messing it up.
So I again did a hard reset all the way back to stock ? And after setting up as a new phone I did a check for update 4.4.2 was on it and it said no update available......
SO WHAT IS GOING ON ? Is there a 4.4.4v that I can install with the odin, so that hopefully I can get over this bump..,, ?
Have the VZW G2 rooted on the previous OTA update, now starting to see the nag screen to update again.
Last time, I reverted to stock and had to set up everything again from scratch. I needed root so did that but now at the same point again.
Is there an easier way to update, without having to wipe everything and start over again?
TIA
I was rooted and just installed the update. Went through fine and kept root. All my had to do was install/update xposed framework and reboot to get my modules working again. Aside from xposed I had no modified system files and stock recovery. I had not uninstalled any pre-installed apps, just have a few frozen with titanium.

Other than root, are you stock? If so, should be able to take ota with non issue. If you modded wifi hotspot, need to change it back for ota. Did you also install custom recovery?

Thanks mhirsh, you nailed it. I had to restore the stock wifi hotspot app, do OTA update, then do the steps for wifi hotspot again.
It's actually the only root feature I've used for quite a while now. The root uninstallers I've tried have all failed to remove bloatware. I'll be looking at other root benefits to get more use out of it.
And to think I spent days restoring my phone from scratch last update ... lol.

I couldn't get the OTA update to work until I went back to stock and unrooted. I was rooted with stock except I had performed the audio mod and the tethering mod which modified system files. Once I unrooted and factory reset to stock everything updated fine. haven't rooted again yet kind of waiting for stock lollipop OTA update to show up soon.

You should never attempt OTA unless you are stock (having only root will be ok).
Yeah i had forgotten i had performed those mods after i rooted. Initially i thought i was just stock and rooted. Thankfully pretty easy to go back to stock.
