[Q] Camera Focus

I do have the camera update installed. I have tried other camera apps including Camera Zoom and Shot Control.
Is anyone else having ridiculous problems with focusing--usually in macro situations? It's very frustrating and, frankly, embarrassing that the camera focuses so poorly. I often have to move the focus reticle around multiple times, reframe my shot, or just give up on trying to capture a focus in most macro situations (such as when I want to grab focus on an object real close and have the background blur out). I had no problems with this on my Gnex.
I just bought my Moto X over the Thanksgiving holiday and didn't know what the camera was like before the camera update, but I couldn't imagine it being worse than what I'm experiencing with it right now.
Here are two example photos of a gnome sitting a respectable 4-6" away from my camera. I found that if I moved the focus reticle onto the blue sleeve, it captured focus very well. However, if I tried to focus on the face or just brought the camera up to the gnome in a "real life situation", it wouldn't focus even after multiple movements of the focus reticle.

Then put the focus on the blue arm part. Problem solved.

What's the trick to get it to focus on close objects in other apps? I cannot get barcodes to scan in the Amazon app because they are out of focus when they are close enough to be big enough.

honestly I'm not sure. It just sort of seemed to work when I used it outside of my bedroom. Maybe try it in a different light?

I've had a number of issues with focusing as well, especially in macro. You can try turning on the manual focus control and having it focus on your subject which seems to help in most cases. However I have had a number of times where the camera just won't focus at all unless I move it to another point and then back to the original photo. It hasn't happened a ton but I have had it happen enough to notice it.

I have this same problem as well. I have a republic wireless one that didnt get the kit kat update yet, and i'm dying for the big camera update in the hopes that it will save me.
the only good thing about an iphone is the flawless camera. otherwise, my moto x just plain rules.

Decided to do a micro-focus comparison vs my S2, here's a sample of both focusing as close as they can on my computer monitor. The best image from each was selected:

I know it's not apples-to-apples (this isn't the same type of problem) but the camera definitely has some serious issues.

Download the app "Camera JB+" from the Play Store and all your problems are solved. I think it's 1.99.
Speaking of the horrible camera on this phone does anyone get bad flash glares in their photos while using flash?? I swear this phone would be perfect if it at least had a gs3 quality camera.

Auto focus uses contrast measurement between lines of the sample area. If the area you're trying to focus on has little contrast, especially in low light, it will have a difficult time trying to focus.

I have an s2...And now a Moto x...not sure about you...But my x's camera blows my s2 away really.

I'm using fv-5, not stock app....And again...my Moto x blows my s2 away. My wife agrees.
Does it compare to my cheap 150 dollar Sony camera's pictures....nope. And no phone will.

Yes, I'm using the latest update to the stock camera on the Moto X, and the stock camera app on the S2, both using stock settings. I retook pictures several times to prevent blurry shots. The Moto is definitely better indoors but outdoor performance is equal at best to the older module used in the S2. I'd be happy to purchase FV-5 and do a comparison using that if you'd like - what kind of technique am I supposed to have with a cellphone camera that has basically no controls or options? It's not like a DSLR - pretty much as point-and-shoot as you can get.

Fv-5 let's you control everything...or just point and shoot too. Yes....it takes time to learn what to change and when....But it can do much more than stock. Someone who is into photography on a real camera....not a phone....would probably learn quick how to get the most out of our crappy phone cameras with fv-5.
Or a similar app....that's just the one I read about and bought.

wow lumia really kick it ass

Who cares about nokia phones you can only take good pictures with it. There's no ecosystem, they are worthless.

Samsungs always had a terrible time with lowlight shots.
Note 3 is abysmal as Samsung always has that over processed cartoon like gel appearance.
Was hoping for much better but the Z3 woops it.

I really don't get why samsung don't work on improving the low-light performance; it's been their cameras' achilles heel for like forever.

There is another website that compares the low light performance of N4 against Z3, iphone 6 plus and butterfly 2 (from htc).

It is actually a blind comparison of the 4 phones (named A, B, C and D), but the general consensus is that A =butterfly 2, B=iphone6p, C=N4, D=Z3.
In my opinion, N4 outperforms iphone6p in many cases, and is at least as good as Z3, while Z3 absolutely tanks in the last competition.
That's why I have much more faith in the low light performance of N4 and looking forward to it

sorry but imo N4 look the worst after Butterfly 2 , IP6 plus looks it has good color reproduction under low light with good details , N4 has horrible over processing with denoise filter and ****ty contrast ( like all samsung phones = ****ty low light performance ) , Z3 looks ok better than N4 and even it doesn't have OIS

yep its sucks , cams on Samsung phones works great with good light but as soon u go inside with medium lighting the images will become really bad and with low light the images turns horrible specially with night mode on u will get unusable bad image with no details at all

White balance is off on all but the lumia. Wonder if WB settings were different between them.

Those images are hardly conclusive. The mobile-review is a rushed review of a pre-production unit with preliminary software. Most importantly, the Note 4 camera isn't less capable. It has OIS and a Sony IMX240 sensor. It is just the software that needs tweaking. This is their first OIS camera so we shouldn't be judging it until the final retail product is out. They may be too conservative with the OIS and instead are using too high ISO and too quick shutter, the opposite of what LG did on its LG G2. And you shouldn't be directly linking to images on another site. It is bad manners. Link the whole review instead.

The E-price shootout is quite encouraging if the C phone is in fact the Note 4. Definitely beats B (supposedly iPhone 6+) in most of the shots and D in the flash shot.

All the images in eprice. Com is inconsistent, each one looks different and not taken from same spot

got to say, I got even more confidence with N4 now

Based on those reviews it still seems to be an improvement over my note 3. Hopefully it get better from here. But Note still is the better device out of all 4 IMO. So I'm content with the result.

I believe history. Samsungs sensors and features are not the problem. Its the insanely terrible processing that turns medium to lowlight pics into smeared noisy nonsense. For many lowlight is a majority of where they take pics (most social events are dimly lit) Nothing Ive read or seen leads me to believe they even care to fix it.

dont go by that video,i do watched that................that seems to be from some other device rather than note 4 or there might be issues bcos most of the n4 pics he compared seems to be blurred.......................have seen much better n4 pics from mobilereview's russian review and i even checked 100% crops of full res images in comp with ip6+ as provided by them and note 4 has better details and its the clear winner.

Almost N4 low light shots haven't got ISO info. This mean they are software processing, different to iPhone 5S. When taking low light shot, you have to wait some seconds for intergrated photo software tweak it, like Note 3.
iPhone and Z2/Z3 normally push higher ISO to get better low light shot. You will spend less time for each shot.

That "comparison" is obviously fake! Note 4 pics on that video look worst than S4 or S5.
And who the hell is releasing camera (photo) comparison on YT? Without the jpg files? I call that comparison BS.
This one looks real and how Note 4 pics SHOULD look, i just hope to se Note 4 vs. iPhone 6 or 6+ soon.

[Q] Moto X camera question

Hi All,
I've got my Moto X and I really love it. I previously had a Nexus 5 which I liked, but doesn't have much character compared to the X. The only issue I've got is camera quality. It seems insanely poor (and the N5 wasn't exactly great). One thing I've been doing though is using Google's stock camera app rather than Moto's. Is that a mistake? Is there software optimisation in the Moto camera app which gives better results?
Any other tips and getting the best pics? It's not even just low light. I took a pic on a bright day and the picture was totally washed out (my friend took the same pic on his iphone and it was just another league). All pics just seem to have bad light metering and are very noisy. I've never had this in a phone camera before...

I don't have any answers but I'm hoping there are some fixes released soon, either by motonovo themselves or some industrious xda mods

I don't think any software mods are going to improve the camera much on our Moto X 2014's. Seems Motorola used an oldish camera sensor in this device. Some people are even saying this camera shouldn't have been used in a 2014 flagship. So we have 2 choices - Put up with it or get a phone with a better camera.

Wow, that's really depressing to hear :crying:
I knew before buying that it wasn't the best camera, but it seems to be the worst I've had since the nexus 4. Seems Motorola like to clear inventory of old stock (see the moto 360 hardware)

Yeah, I expected more from a 13mp camera. I'm considering switching to a Nexus 6, but I really like my Moto X apart from the camera.

The Moto X 2014 is the same sensor as the G3? Are you sure? But, even if that is true, the G3 has OIS and laser auto focus and other improvements. But I'm pretty sure the G3 uses a slightly newer sensor. The pics on my G3 weren't bad, not great but ok. However, they were a LOT better than on my Moto X 2014, this camera is a joke.

I'm almost certain they use different sensors, I could be wrong. The G3 has OIS and laser auto focus. The camera on the G3 is significantly better than the Moto X 2014, I've owned both. There seems to be a lot of people complaining about the camera o the Moto X, but no one doing the same for the G3. If they used the same cameras I wouldn't expect that to be the case.

Have you got any links that state the Moto X 2014 uses the same camera as the G3? The G3 could just be better because of it's extra hardware i.e OIS and laser autofocus, but I'd still be interested in seeing a link stating these devices have the exact same camera.

Yes this camera blows. I had a S5 then a Note Edge. I love this phone way more than either of those but omg this thing has a crap camera

Both camera's (g3/moto x) have the same Sony IMX135, only the g2/3 (both the same sensor) have OIS and apparently better software. Compared to the lg g2 the moto x sucks donkey balls.
It does help to use other camera apps.

Just goes to show how much difference OIS and laser auto focus make, because the camera on the Moto X 2014 performs nowhere near as good as the G3. I'm just going to stick with this phone now until the HTC M9 is released. I loved my M8 but the camera and how tall and skinny it was led me to sell it. I'll definitely be switching to the M9 though if HTC use a better camera.

I'm just looking at an M8, I think I'd be stupid to get another M8 now though with the M9 around the corner. OIS has to help with the G3 camera and that laser auto focus is good. My G3 just kept overheating though, and after a google search it seemed to be a pretty common problem so I got rid of it. I was considering the Nexus 6, but like I say - I think I'll just stick with the Moto X 2014 until the M9 is released.
Edit to add: With the huge difference in picture quality from the Moto X 2014 and the G3 its more than just software that's creating the difference.

Well, someone has suggested the camera app might make a difference so I'll use the moto one for a bit and see. The focussing seems OK, so the lack of laser focussing isn't doing this. It has to be optics or software.
When looking at this phone, I kept hearing how Moto had listened to users and improved since the first X, so I assumed that would mean it would be OK. But they either lied, or the old X had a horrifically bad camera

What are you on about? I find the Moto x rear camera quite decent. The front camera is pathetic in low light conditions, can barely refresh the view finder once a second. But the rear camera is quite good to be honest. Here's a couple of samples I took with it.

These two shots were taken within seconds of each other. This is a horrible camera. I love this phone, but this honestly might be a deal breaker for me. Kinda hurts to say that because I fell in love with the device immediately. My only option is a Oneplus and I really don’t want to deal with their dumb ordering process.

These two shots were taken within seconds of each other. This is a horrible camera. I love this phone, but this honestly might be a deal breaker for me. Kinda hurts to say that because I fell in love with the device immediately. My only option is a Oneplus and I really don’t want to deal with their dumb ordering process.

Maybe installing this will help.. This is a modded version of the stock camera app called Camera+. Loaded with advanced settings. Slide open the settings and click the ladybug icon to access them.

[Discussion] Improve Camera Quality

Hello. So, there has been a confusion on how to capture better photos and videos on Nexus 5. With the introduction of Android Lollipop we have the option to shoot RAW photos (which is basically the same as before, with the difference being that the image is not compressed or processed), and also we got a great app which is called L Camera..
L Camera was a great alternative for those who wanted to squeeze out as much as Nexus 5's camera has to offer. We even got to shoot at 1080p/60fps(although it was never fixed to work properly) and a resolution very close to 4K.
I hoped that since Google unlocked all this power for us with Lollipop, Marshmallow was going to bring even better stuff on the table. This does not seem to be the case though.
So, right now we are basically stuck in terms of camera options. The L Camera has been outdated, problematic and unsupported for quite some while now and Google's stock camera is still really bad.
How do you feel about all this guys? Have you found any better camera app than L Camera that works on Marshmallow? Are you building something yourselves? (maybe and improved version of L Camera)

This may sound strange, but the Marshmallow stock camera app (which has been updated via the play store after M was released) is far better than that of Lollipop. I have found that it is far faster to respond (both focusing and the shutter), and handles low light much better (including with HDR). The auto white balance is much improved, too. The controls are more convenient than they were on Lollipop. This was a big surprise. One day, after routine updates, the camera just became much better!
True, it is no SLR, but whereas the photos I got from the Nexus 5 on Lollipop were mostly unusable except for viewing on another phone, now I get decent shots that I am not embarrassed to post online.

I use Proshot, really great camera app.

Got to agree. I notice especially low light performance has improved greatly on the stock camera app on marshmallow. Not sure what Google has done but good job on them for doing it. It still responses like crap and lags some times but if the pictures are better I am all for it.

Stock app is much better its what I call serviceable now. I always knew the Nexus 5s camera was capable but poor software always held it back. Sad to see it took almost 3 years after it launched to become capable.
Open camera is also a great app and 100% free and open source

The best choice is to shoot DNG and then use lightroom for android

The lens is prone to gather grease from you fingers causing a hazy streaky look. I always bring a microfiber cloth to clean it off before shooting.
There isnt a proper RAW color profile available so it takes work to get images to pop like the JPEGs do. One of these days I'l generate one, it requires shooting a colorchecker chart outside in clear mid-day.

I haven't taken much pictures with it but this one.
I have a 6S and iPhone 5, I had lost my iPhone 5 out of stupidity. I wanted a cheap replacement and heard good things about the nexus, I had already tried the Galaxy s5 and htc one m8 so might as well kill 2 birds with one stone a good cheap phone and a chance to try out the nexus 5. Very impressed so far, very smooth. Runs much smoother then the galaxies I had. Ran me $160 CAD and it's unlocked
I decided to take a picture last night with the nexus. Came out amazing, took some other low lighting shots in my room and compared it to my 6s and it isn't that bad to be completely honest much better then my s5, Note edge and htc in low lighting.

The N5 is terrible for general photography esp low-light. Only my iPhone 5S is worse in low-light situations lol.

RAW and post-editing kind of defeats the entire purpose of point-and-shoot. The first pic is really amazing with the amount of detail and clarity. The second one has too much grain for my liking. Takes me back to those Nokia cameraphones from yesteryears lol
But MM has really improved cam quality if the user knows how to use the manual settings. I've got better results with Camera FV-5 than with any other app.

Yes, RAW isn't user friendly, but this is thread about camera quality The second pic is really pushing it. It was a very dimly lit venue, a challenge for any camera. But offline processing allows much more sophisticated algorithms. Normally that shot would either be underexposed or at best a smoothed out, waxy-looking mess.

True, but that means instant sharing is out of the question. And many people would be uncomfortable processing pics just so some distant grandma "Likes" it on Fb.
Everytime i take low-light shots, I remember my trusty N73 with its huge LED flash and N82 with xenon.
How would you say we can make the best use of HDR on our N5 with 3rd party apps? And does it really work?

I have a simple checklist I go through when processing raw photos: exposure, white balance and NR if needed. I rarely need anything else so for a single shot I'm normally done in less than a minute. Raw converters offer many options which can seem overwhelming for the novice, but there's nothing to it if you stick to the most important ones. OTOH if you are working on an uncalibrated monitor there's a small chance are you might be making things worse color-wise. I don't do HDR, sorry.

Snap camera? I threw it under system/apps, changed the name to camera2.apk and even the power button hot key works.

I'm enjoying "A Better Camera" too. It's really simple to use and produces nice photos. But I still prefer Camera FV-5 over it when I need manual setings.

Question Cameras in low light are really bad

Smudged detail, really not great. I had the find x5 pro for a while before returning it and there really is no comparison. Quite disappointed.

Really not sure about keeping the phone. On one hand I actually like the fake OxygenOS basically ColorOS. The phone software feels very very polished relative to other androids. Almost like a non buggy MIUI. But the PWM flicker is pretty bad.
Cameras seem fine in my limited testing. Although OnePlus has always taken a couple months to fix their cameras.

I've taken some great pics so far...as with any phone the situation sometimes requires you to alter some settings, that's what pro modes for.
This phone will come good, the hardwares just too good to not exploit with some good ROMs.
I was hesitant at first comparing it to my 8 pro but I'm so in now..

Totally agree!

in good light the camera is fine, it is medium to low light where I am seeing a drop off vs say the S22 or Pixel. For example seems pretty bad for smudging fur detail on pets.

Have you tried the other settings in manual mode ?
As a point and shoot it'll get better but if you expect the world without any work it's just not going to happen mate. Not Vs an S22. I mean that's an expensive phone, it should be better, the pixel is using the base software and it's Google again it should be better..
That being said I'm positive I can get better than any point and shoot camera phone with this phone

This camera has a lot of features, settings, and cool picture possibilities....Hasselblad ftw

What I have learnt from experience with phones is to now buy it for the camera , I will just get one mirror less camera which will last longer than any camera phones for a long time

I think it is only in comparison to the competition that it falls short. My torture test for any new phone is photos of our cats indoors and I am seeing more smudging and a less clwean image than the Pixel of S22 Ultra offers and yes I have owned both and still actually have the S22U.

Try some different settings. Smudges may occur due to HDR being on and a slight movement, could just be the software that OnePlus has made. It could just need a few updates which I'm sure may occur.
ISO could be too high too.
Use pro mode, set the shutter speed as low as possible Vs an ISO of 200-800, should help...find the sweet spot depending on the light you have.. it's manual but honestly my pics come out better when I have control. My DSLR I'd never let the camera choose for me..

There was a poll on phonearena with blind camera test (users were asked to vote for best picture of same scene clicked by S22, iPhone13 Pro, OP 10 Pro and Pixel 6 Pro without knowing which phone clicked which picture)... OP sucked major balls and came in last

Yeah, sometimes it is bad if there is very low light OnePlus should give an update for this along with the security patch!

Again this is point and shoot.
Ask any actual photographer if they rely on automatic lens settings, the vast majority will say no they won't so why would you rely on it for your phone? They all have the capability yet we tend to believe some plum who's pointings and shooting? Makes no sense to me
I'm not saying that the results are incorrect as I've not used them phones, but relying on this test is testing one thing and that's the automatic settings chosen by the software on the phone.
That's it.
Give all these phones to a photographer and get them to use settings based on the scene they have Infront of them, then check the results, I think you'll see a different outcome

For the record I used to be a photographer for a living in a previous life. I almost always though just use my phone in auto mode as a point and shoot, have just never embraced manual mode (or even Av mode for that matter) on a phone.

I take a lot of astro photograph's, both with my DSLR / telescope and purpose built astro camera.. but also my phone.
I need to change some things when I take a night shot, especially of the sky.
I think if you give it a shot (no pun intended) you'll be surprised at the results.

it will take months before sensor potential is used at its fullest with Gcam, and everyone knows these have infinite issues with white balance etc for years, so those kind of flagships won't ever shoot close to what cheaper older flagships can already do after years of gcam configs development

I agree besides gcam, it's just unstable, things not working like wide angle, slow motion.
But for a point and shoot it's the simpler option.
I think Vs pro mode you'd get better on the stock app.
Defo agree on updates helping

oneplus explicitly stated they remove access to aux cameras in OOS12, no one pays flagship price for a point and shoot and nevermind what comes out at the end experience, u can do that on a 200$ Xiaomi and get 95% satisfaction for social media and casual browsing on large screens
