I have a none rooted Moto X and don't want to root it. Just curious if anyone here has got Foxfi to work with their Moto X on Cricket, I have a neighbor that has the same phone and asked me to help him set it up, and I was not able to get it working. So I figured I'd post here to see if anyone else has had success, if yes, please post your settings. :good:

its not carrier dependent. it has to do the version of Android. last i checked, FoxFi isn't compatible with any 4.4.x version.

Yep, I told him that but he also doesn't want to root, but thanks, any other suggestions, please advise if not then he'll be SOL, LOL
Figured I'd check in to see if anything has changed. Has anyone been able to edit their build prop without ROOT to allow Tethering on Cricket wireless ?? Or figured out how to Tether without ROOTING, I've tried all I can find on the net but no luck.
If ROOTING is my only option, what suggestions are a simple ROOT process, to keep stock Rom and be able to Tether.
For that you can simply root with magisk using stock ROM. Also magisk have a module to enable tethering if you phone have locked (can't try because I have unlocked non American version).
Also after this time you don't have any warranty so root is not a problem in that way.
However you can't touch system file like build prop without accessing the system (root) afik.
If you are on stock 5.1 follow this link to root:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-how-to-root-5-1-unlocked-t3140217
Change SuperSu in the guide with magisk zip (and install magisk manager after that) and TWRP 2.8.6.0 with TWRP 3.0.2/3.0.3/3.1.1
---------- Post added at 03:03 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:55 AM ----------
If you already see the message I updated with guide link
Question is this, by simply rooting, will it allow for editing the build prop for tethering, or do I also have to unlock the bootloader as well ??

I don't think you can rooting with bootloader locked.
Do it, it's easy and the warranty is already expired.
The only problem is with bank app or some app like Netflix or Pokemon go.
Thanks for the info, cheers, Sorry I've been out of action for awhile.

I got the Moto X a couple weeks ago for VZW. I'd like to root the Moto X, because..tether . Witht he 4.4.2 update around the corner, should I root now or wait? I don't on putting any custom ROMS on there, so I'd like the most updated Stock ROM. But I'm sure that's not rooted yet. Also, how hard is it to root the X? If it's that hard and easy to brick the phone, I may just hold off. Thanks guys.
As far as we know of, it's impossible to root the latest OTA. 4.4.2 changed bootloaders. It's going to require a whole new exploit... Which we might not have.

Freeze MotorolaOTA and delete the OTA from your /cache folder. To freeze MotorolaOTA, you need an app that can do it. I went ahead and paid the $6.50 for Titanium B/U Pro, which can freeze and is a well regarded app. There are probably free ones you can use.

No there is no way to WiFi tether for free if you have unlimited data or a capped data plan without root. You can USB and Bluetooth tether using PDAnet if you run Kit Kat 4.4 and are unrooted. Or if you have a Verizon Share Everything plan you WiFi tether for free.
I am going to root a locked bootloader Moto X here soon and post Step-By-Step Instructions after I do. Don't take the 4.4.2 update if you want root.

Is there anything besides PDAnet? I heard you have to pay for that, or reconnect all the time.
I'm definitely going to hold off on the update and hope for a bit easier root method. I'm not too good at the adb thing.

There won't be an easier method as jcase isn't going to do one for 4.4.2 and Motorola has with each new update tried to close the hacks that jcase has found.
You either root on 4.4 using Slap My Moto or stay unrooted. After you root on 4.4, you can keep the 4.4 bootloader and selectively upgrade the system to 4.4.2. But there are people on the Verizon 4.4.2 thread claiming they took the OTA and kept root and kept write protection disabled. Others on other carriers said otherwise.

This will likely never happen. You need an unlocked bootloader for a custom recovery like TWRP. As far as I know, the last VZW Samsung devices with unlocked bootloaders were the GS3 and Note 2.
With that being said, utilities like safestrap allows users to run custom roms/etc on locked bootloaders provided there's root access. I'm sure something like this is already in the works.

Anyone else getting random reboots after rooting? Not a lot, but I'm getting at least one or two a day since using this root method.
I appreciate any help here. My phone is stuck in limbo. At one time it was stock rooted. I was running xposed modules, so I know root was working. At one point I did a system reset losing all root capability.
I am attempting to upgrade to 5.0 and OTAs are failing. That is to be expected as I was rooted. I run rootchecker and it fails saying I am not rooted. OTAs don't work, I tried to reroot using towelroot-v3 and I get device not supported message. Can't use muniz's 5.0 method as root is failing.
How can I either get directly to 5.0 or get back to stock so I can take the OTA. I understand that means that there won't be root for me for a while, and I can live with that. I would prefer to have root capability though.

I'm guessing you've seen this since you said you couldn't use his method, but what you need to download is the nce downgrade file. It's towards the bottom of the OP. Once your on nce you'll be able to root with towel root then go to 5.0 Muniz way.
---------- Post added at 04:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:29 PM ----------
If you downgrade to the nce you'll also be able to take the ota if you want. But remember if you take the ota you will not be able to root it downgrade anymore.

Deodex is stock but will allow you to use xposed and theme etc. Stock is just that "stock" won't be able to mod very much. Deodex is what devs use when building roms.

Figured as much. I loaded the stock as with 5.0, there is not much need for Xposed for my uses. I mainly liked being able to bypass security requirements with Exchange, but Smart Lock seems to help here. I have a Moto360 and trusted device was working, but Smart Lock is now greyed out. I do have a fingerprint registered. Wonder why I can't get into Smart Lock now.

Can you confirm it works with tmobile h34510f software
Edit: have to have an account to download file
What about a recovery? Can't find anything that will load (twrp just errors on me)
Flashify+TWRP worked for me.
This works on all versions of tmobile and metropcs leons.
Maybe the international versions, you flash at your own risk if you try.
Rooting on tmobile will be a really bad idea if you actually need to have your phone charged. The tmobile diagnostics tool will constantly ask for root permissions and it's impossible to disable the tool without altering the 4 gig system image.

Com.tmobile.pr. some crap. It pops up asking for root permission on supersu.
That's the diagnostic tool.
Just got my T-Mobile Leon 2 weeks ago and finally decided to root it. But then found this and updated to 10f and worked great. disabled the tmobile crap before they updated and all good. No errors and with root access. Thanks for posting this that was really bugging me.

I was able to root mine successfully the long way.... had to obtain a dump of the boot.img / recovery.img using software that I'm not sure of the policy of discussion on here at XDA - compile TWRP - unlock bootloader - fastboot boot the compiled recovery - flash SuperSU to get patched boot.img (kitchen was being dumb and systemless root didn't want to work) - Flash SuperSU in system mode - Convert SuperSU.apk to system app so it doesn't get removed every reboot. I can post my compiled TWRP when I'm back at my office or grab it from my repository that I'm trying to establish - https://bluroms.info . Sorry for the design mess / lack of much there at moment haven't had much free time lately in process of cleaning up the device kernel sources to build from source... its sort of ... messy in there...... can post on github if anyone wants in

I've been trying to root a Blu Advance 5.0 HD for a while now and stumbled on this post. I visited your site but am not sure what a 'Scatter File' is, or in what order I need to do things in order to get root.
If you could provide a little more detailed info that would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!

EDIT: Sorry, to clarify I tried all of the other PC and APK rooting solutions but was able to unlock the bootloader using ADB. I guess I'm just looking for the proper way to root and add TWRP. Thanks!

I found a option in developer settings that is "Enable OEM unlocking" and it makes it so you can unlock the bootloader from fastboot, if you do adb reboot-bootloader and then fastboot unlock it should undo the bootloader for you

Like the others said, I would really appreciate if you could give an explanation or tutorial on how to use these files that you uploaded to root the phone. I'm willing to donate some money if required. I only know basic technical stuff haha.

I too am trying to root this device, and am unclear on a few of the steps here. I actually found your site with the recovery and boot images independently, really appreciated! I am at the point where I just need to patch the boot image, though I am not sure how to do this. If you could help me out with this step I might be able to put together some sort of list of steps to get through the whole process if you don't have the time.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
