Requirements:
Flashtool
A recovery (can be both CWM and TWRP)
NOTE: As some people have problems flashing the update, please update your existing recovery to the latest recovery with XZDualRecovery
Current FW version: 10.1.A.1.350 or 10.1.A.1.434: maybe others too, try and let me know!
From the users in the thread I noticed people CWM running into trouble because their cache partition is gone. See the 'Known Issues' in the OP of the XZDualRecovery link above for more info and links to a fix. Fix that first before you attempt this update using CWM!
Special features:
Superuser integrated in system, FULL root, no reboots when remounting /system RW!
XZDualRecovery 2.3 RELEASE (CWM 6.0.3.2 & TWRP 2.5.0.0) pre-installed;
Tailored FTF to minimize the chance of accidental system wiping!
No need to clear caches!
@shem2409 created a nice youtube video guide to assist you in your work, be sure to check his post for it! Thanks m8!
TIP: This ROM is compatible with the shutdown/reboot MOD by @niaboc79
TIP: This ROM and the integrated recovery are compatible with the reboot wrapper by @DooMLoRD, get it here!
C6603: How to update to 10.1.1.A.1.253:
For C6603: Download C6603.flashable.253.zip (Bittorrent: 728MB) and Xperia_Z_10.1.1.A.1.253_C6603-stripped.ftf (14MB), save it somewhere you remember;
Put 'C6603.flashable.253.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'Xperia_Z_10.1.1.A.1.253_C6603-stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Create a backup of your phone in CWM or TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard0';
Flash everything in 'Xperia_Z_10.1.1.A.1.253_C6603-stripped.ftf' to your phone and boot the phone straight to recovery after that;
NOTE: If you have an unlocked bootloader, you CAN flash the kernel, but you do not need to, to keep your custom kernel. DooMKernel v7 has support for this ROM version.
Flash 'C6603.flashable.253.zip' in recovery (Works in both CWM and TWRP!)
Reboot to system without clearing (dalvik-/)cache.
C6602: How to update to 10.1.1.A.1.253:
For C6602: Download C6602.flashable.253.zip (Bittorrent: 703MB) and Xperia_Z_10.1.1.A.1.253_C6602-stripped.ftf (14MB), save it somewhere you remember;
Put 'C6602.flashable.253.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'Xperia_Z_10.1.1.A.1.253_C6602-stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Create a backup of your phone in CWM or TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard0';
Flash everything in 'Xperia_Z_10.1.1.A.1.253_C6602-stripped.ftf' to your phone and boot the phone straight to recovery after that;
NOTE: If you have an unlocked bootloader, you CAN flash the kernel, but you do not need to, to keep your custom kernel. DooMKernel v7 has support for this ROM version.
Flash 'C6602.flashable.253.zip' in recovery (Works in both CWM and TWRP!)
Reboot to system without clearing (dalvik-/)cache.
The first boot will be considerably slower and after a long wait at the boot animation you will see Android optimizing the apps on your phone, It will update your NFC with a firmware and after that, all is done!
IMPORTANT NOTE:
For some devices the first or second reboot after the successful upgrade may be initiated by the ROM/Kernel to upgrade some low-level firmware. This will be done from the screen which normally shows you the kernel logo. This upgrade flash will also happen when on a custom kernel by @DooMLoRD. DO NOT INTERRUPT THAT WHATEVER YOU DO OR HOWEVER LONG IT TAKES! Just let it do it's thing and wait, your phone will continue boot as soon as it's done.
I have done this myself, using my own method and I have not found any problem yet. :fingers-crossed:
Enjoy! :victory:
Known XZDualRecovery Issues:
All known issues in TWRP and CWM on locked boot loaders apply, see their respective threads for more information.
Be especially careful with the cache partition when using CWM. Hopefully version 2.0 solved the cache issues but in case of problems with /cache use the FTF in my files to restore the cache partition if yours ever stops mounting due to the CWM issues, read this and this for more info on that. This FTF was created for .434 but as the cache did not change between .350, .434 and .253 you can still use it to fix the cache partition.
CWM Usage warning: Root can be lost (almost worst case), a bootloop can be experienced (worst case) or a reboot upon remounting /system to be able to write to it (most cases, relatively harmless) when using CWM and before a reboot out of recovery the 'ROM may flash recovery, fix it?' question is answered with 'yes'. This can be recovered from by opening a terminal app and typing the following commands:
Code:
su
/system/bin/stop ric
mount -o remount,rw /system
chmod 755 /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Alternatively you can boot in to TWRP and go to the Advanced menu -> File manager and look for /system/etc/install-recovery.sh to set permissions 755 on it.
If even that is too much to handle for you, see the patch at the bottom of the OP to flash the fix.
TWRP Usage warning: It seems TWRP 2.5.0.0 has issues with the internal storage, which seem related to the changes made to support encrypted storage volumes... This means the internal storage sometimes shows up almost empty (just folders) and no files. Try to use CWM when that happens.
How to report errors:
Please, before shouting out "It doesn't work!!1!" or "I lost root!" or even "My phone reboots when remounting /system RW!!" try the following:
Restore a .434 /system ONLY using any means you are familiar with so you can try again.
Root it using any means you are familiar with.
Install XZDualRecovery and then try to update again using TWRP. This time you can skip the FTF as it has already done it's job.
If it still fails something from there on: LOGS!!.
NOTE: The important ones can be found in /cache/recovery and in /tmp/XZDualRecovery, pack them up and send them to me.
Thank you
Flashable ROM Mutator:
Download AROMA ROM Mutator 0.13
This (former patch package) uses AROMA to create a user friendly menu to choose between updates to be installed.
If you want to switch from SuperUser (default in this ROM) to SuperSU you can use this to make the change.
If you have the reboot problem when trying to remount /system writable, you can reinstall the superuser app of your preference, it's installation includes the patch.
If you are missing /system/bin/chargemon.stock and you want to be able to charge your phone while it's turned off.
Flash using one of the recoveries!
Version 0.13 and upwards is using AROMA 2.70B1 or better, the below warning can be ignored for now. Let me know how it performs!
AROMA Warning: AROMA currently works best in TWRP but even there it has some issues on the Z/ZL. It sometimes does not start up correctly or it has a 'sticky button' issue. It makes it a little less easy to use but this will be fixed in time. It is a combination problem caused by the new hardware and incompatibility with it and the fact the recoveries both have been updated considerably to work on the latest phones, causing issues with some functionality of AROMA.
If it hangs when trying to start, reboot your phone and try again.
If it has the sticky buttons, press the button again to activate.
You can avoid the sticky buttons by pressing them for about half a second (that means not too short and not too long). It will work, it's just showing a bug associated with the latest recoveries.
The Samsung S4, HTC One and One X and the Nexus 4 & 7 show the same issues. For them AROMA sometimes crashes, this is an issue i have not yet observed on the Z/ZL.

Try with root explorer, remount /system as rw (for reading and writing), if it suddenly reboots, your rooting failed.
The root methods by bin4ry and DooMLoRD have more issues. This release was unchanged, root gets installed after the rom itself by the flashable zip. As a result, i could not find a fault yet
Can you show me how root the room (.Zip) because i created my rom (C6602 in my country) but when i installation Suppersu.zip, i go to Root explorer set R/o and my phone reboot....Thanks alot if U help me
can i flash docomo status bar after finish?
my phone's bootloader is locked. So after following this method will i be having the latest kernel, fota & baseband? will there be any problem if i flash them from the .253 FTF?
I've got a stock ROM, locked and unrooted and branded.
Can I use the FTF file with flashtool only for upgrade and unbrand the phone?
This method include the latest kernel, fota, baseband etc..? or just system files?
im downloading the zip file now,
but where can i get the stripped ftf file? is it inside the zip or what?
thanks :3

Sorry I want to be sure.
I am locked Bootloader/rooted/recovery etc.
I will do as your guide says. But If I want to get the latest kernel etc; I have to flash kernel baseband etc from a stock 253 ftf?
Am I right? Or your files already have these?
A bit confused here
EDIT:
I looked at your "Xperia_Z_10.1.1.A.1.253_C6603-stripped.ftf" it containes the kernel baseband and stuff. So first you flash the new kernel etc... than the new system via recovery if I understand correctly. And system includes all the necessary root busybox and recoveries.
I still can't believe how this works on locked bootloader hehe.

An FTF file is basically the same thing as the packages downloaded by SUS, the only difference is you use a different tool to install them and that a FTF is a container where the separate files are stored into one easy to handle bunble.
The locked bootloader accepts them because it also uses the exact same way to flash them but with a greater freedom of choice. The separate sin files are signed by Sony and that is still unchanged so the bootloader will accept them because of that.
And you understand the procedure well. Now go and do it

I have followed your instruction to do, then I get the new firmware with root.
However my XZ will reboot when I mount the /system with R/W.
It does not happen before the upgrade. Any method to solve it ? thanks.
After flashing ftf, I lost my recovery.
I cant enter recovery now, so I couldnt flashed flashable.253.zip.
What should I do?
Everything is still working but I am on my old rom. "KA07 Revolution"

I've been cooking up a FW 10.1.1.A.1.253 Generic release, this thread will carry it into the world... i know @wawyed did one too, he beat me too it
I hope I can offer something he can not: ease of installation and without losing any data!
Requirements:
Flashtool

The C6603 ROM is based on the FTF provided by @NetSkill in this thread. Thanks dude
The C6602 ROM is based on the FTF provided by @alfiabraham in this thread. Thanks dude
In the following guide I suggest you use an external SDCard but that's just good practice, you can use your internal storage or even an USB OTG storage device in TWRP if you like to install, that's no problem!... If you are modding and the likes, best is to have an external sdcard, just for safeties sake.
C6602: How to update to 10.3.1.A.0.244:
For C6602: Download C6602GI.flashable.244.zip (Bittorrent: 741MB) and C6602_10.3.1.A.0.244_GenericI-stripped.ftf (15MB), save it somewhere you remember;
Put 'C6602GI.flashable.244.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'C6602_10.3.1.A.0.244_GenericI-stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Create a backup of your phone in CWM or TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard0';
Flash 'C6602GI.flashable.244.zip' in TWRP, do not reboot but go back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off;
Flash everything in 'C6602_10.3.1.A.0.244_GenericI-stripped.ftf';
Reboot to system without clearing (dalvik-/)cache.
C6603: How to update to 10.3.1.A.0.244:
For C6603: Download C6603CE.flashable.244.zip (Bittorrent: 688MB) and C6603_10.3.1.A.0.244_GenericCE-stripped.ftf (15MB), save it somewhere you remember;
Put 'C6603CE.flashable.244.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'C6603_10.3.1.A.0.244_GenericCE-stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Create a backup of your phone in CWM or TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard0';
Flash 'C6603CE.flashable.244.zip' in TWRP, do not reboot but go back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off;
Flash everything in 'C6603_10.3.1.A.0.244_GenericCE-stripped.ftf';
Reboot to system without clearing (dalvik-/)cache.
The first boot will be considerably slower and after a long wait at the boot animation you will see Android optimizing the apps on your phone.
I have done this myself along side @Tamirwig, using this method and we have not found any problem yet, again! :fingers-crossed:
NOTE: You will eventually/inevitably get the triangle screen again after doing this update (typically after you shut down your phone to reboot it without an actual reboot command), you will have to sit this one out it seems, it keeps coming back until it's done...
DO NOT INTERRUPT IT, LET IT RUN AND DO IT'S THING! you have been warned!
Enjoy! :laugh:
Known XZDualRecovery Issues:
Busybox Updater/Installer: If you have XZDualRecovery installed, un-install any Busybox updating app/tool as most if not all of them will install a version of busybox which does not support the lzma compression applets XZDualRecovery depends on. The version installed together with XZDualRecovery is very stable and I have yet to hear anyone complain about it's stability.
How to report errors:
Please, before shouting out "It doesn't work!!1!" or "I lost root!" or even "My phone reboots when remounting /system RW!!" try the following:
Restore a /system ONLY using any means you are familiar with so you can try again.
Root it using [Z][ROOT] DooMLoRD Easy Rooting Toolkit.
Thank you
Works great! Thanks.

Just flash it (The stripped ftf) as is, you don't need to exclude anything or mess with the flashing settings.
This is awesome stuff! Can I flash this on my 6602? I have the XZ Dual recovery already installed with a C6603 stock rom.

Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
Yes, .244 is newer than .423
just flashed the stock .244 yesterday.
I had a dual recovery before (somewhen...).... but i guess thats gone now ? (even flashed a few doom kernels between)
If i just flash this in CWM will it work ? Or is it essential to install Dual recovery before ?
P.S could you please consider using a different hoster for your .torrent files ? i use my NAS as external download station. Instead of just using the link Copy&Paste i had to wait 10sec, download the .torrent file and configure the download manually.
Or just a direct link to the .torrent file wihout waiting time, that would be awesome.
Flashed this successfully following instructions on the OP on my C6602.
One thing I noticed though, after flashing the zip, I went back to Menu in TWRP then tapped on Reboot. A prompt came up saying Root permissions are lost and a swipe to fix was shown. I did not attempt to fix and proceeded to next instruction and flashed through Flashboot.
Thanks for this update and guide @[NUT] Amazing piece of work.
EDIT: BTW, after the phone booted, I did not lose any data. Just an FYI. Oh, I still haven't seen that Triangle you mentioned in the OP. Hope it doesn't pop up.

If you look at /tmp in a file manager app there should be 2 files there: killedric and remountedrootfs . If they are not there then the RIC service is probably active... can you check that for me?

TWRP expects a certain permission on the su executable... which is basically the same as with my packages. Even DooMLoRD sets the same... i was going to report a bug on that to Team Win about that soon... it's annoying. Root works fine either way.

Xperia Z Vanilla
Known CWM recovery, greatly improved with touch ui and many useful features by Phil3759.
Original Xperia T thread
Compatible with Rom Manager (reboot recovery, backup, install,...)
As the title says, this recovery has some needed modifications included, so you can use it with unmodified stock kernel (locked bootloader).
Main LB script with logging was created by cray_Doze.
My modifications are firstly based on recovery from davidmarco, then I found big help and better (PhilZ) recovery in [NUT]´s thread and that it´s better to unmount selinux fs so it cannot be redefined and checking files is probably stopped (?) in recovery, so I´ve had to use init binary that does not need selinux.
Installation:
1. Root your device
2. Install modified Flash Gordon app (no busybox installation needed)
3. Download this recovery to SDcard
4. Launch the app and allow it root access
5. Tap "select zip", find the zip, "flash now"
6. Don´t try to reboot with the app, but do regular reboot in power menu
Upgrading from 4.1 with CWM for LB to stock 4.3:
1. Download stock 4.3 rom zip to SDcard
2. Download this recovery to SDcard
3. Reboot to 4.1 CWM and flash 4.3 rom
4. Flash this recovery (optionally flash SU too)
5. Power off the device
6. Flash 4.3 ftf - tick all wipes, and exclude system from installation or you will do it all again from scratch
Or if you already have some recovery on 4.3, just flash this in recovery.
Caution:
Don´t try to flash rom zip made in the recovery. It is too big. It goes first to tmpfs, which has only around 433000kB.
System will be formated, but then can´t be extracted from zip and copied to /system. No /system = you will do it all again from scratch
Changelog:
v1.7
- proximity sensor fix (with big help of steveboss and his V)
- reboot recovery working from all applications (quick settings, rom manager, recovery, etc.)(tested on T)

You can use backup and restore, this is a working version, just don't flash an update.zip made with the recovery (there is an option for creating that). For SuperSU CWM flashable zip look at the download section of the original SuperSU topic

Keep the previously installed system with recovery in your phone.
So only don't tick system (exclude system from ftf flashing). Everything else leave ticked. It's also better to wipe data between 4.1 and 4.3.

Had this the other day trying to upgrade. If you can't get into CM, Use sony pc companion to bring it back - repair option
tested on TX 4.3 official stock system
and confirmed it works
both externel and internal storage can be used to flash
:highfive::highfive:
I found one bug (your mac address and other things are not restored after factory reset). I have it already fixed. I will upload fixed version today or tomorrow. There should be no need to do factory reset again, after installation of the fix.
First post updated with fixed import from TA after factory reset - 1.4 version.

I think theres a confusion here, in flashtool you tick to wipe data, appslog and cache but below that is the list of things to exclude from flashing so if you tick on it you will not flash that part of the rom so if you tick everything here but dont tick system, everything will be excluded but system won´t son the only thing you are flashing is the system folder and so thers no kernel you´ll have a bootloop
Oh, that looks like the reason. Sorry. I will edit the OP.

Flash back a 4.1.2 rom with Flashtool, root it, put a cwm on it and continue with 'Upgrading from 4.1 with CWM for LB to stock 4.3' section of the first post You can find everything in the All in One post in the Q&A section of this forum.
i recently asked for help in regards to rooting firmware 14.3.A.681 Model C6903 a noobs guide really since i am still new to it but some of the reply's i got were a bit confusing but all had one thing in common which was downgrade to an ftf ending in .534. The issues making me confused are
1. when i downgrade to .534 ftf i downloaded the Commercial and Generic UK unbranded versions and to my surprise my SIM Card wasn't detected i really dont know why :/
2.the next issue was reply's from some members regarding the next step which was after downgrading install xddualrecovery others also said root the .534 firmware first then install xddualrecovery and i noticed with some versions of xddualrecovery there's a 3rd option called "Install on non root" now my question here is, that option will it root and install a recovery on my phone such as CWM or TWRP and if yes why do i need a recovery am just rooting and truly do not wish to backup any data on phone or SD Card or install custom roms in future
3.the next issue was SuperSU after doing some googling on it i realized its an apk for root but i thought rooting will give me superuser access so my do i need that and why does xddualrecovery have an option of install SuperSU on rooted phone
4. the next issue is flashable ftf's or zip and stripped ftf's or zip and how is it different from regular or Stock ftf's and also why do i need to flash a flashable zip or ftf in say TWRP recovery and after powering off flash it again with the flashtool as some members suggested ?
5. the next issue is if its really required to install a recovery such as CWM or TWRP to get root access how do i unroot and get back default Stock firmware
6. what is locked and unlock bootloader ? and how do i know if mine is locked or unlocked some members made statements regarding that
all these issues especially my SIM Card not being detected made downgrade to C6903_14.2.A.0.290_Generic MY_1276-7939_R1B before my sim card started functioning and my last question is how to root 14.2.A.0.290 since it seems kitkat rooting is quite complicated and i hope rooting 14.2.A.0.290 would not require a downgrade
All answers are in Z1 Section. Read carefully, it is simply. To me look like you don't agree with the method to get root, than stay stock if you don't like it. There is no other ways.

another example a member explained how to flash a flashable zip through TWRP in detail """In TWRP -> Wipe -> advanced Wipe Tick/Check:
Dalvik-Cache
System
Cache
Data
Then 'Swipe to Right' to make it happen and go back to the TWRP home screen;
Flash 'C69XX_14.2.A.0.290.flashable.zip' in TWRP """"""" but failed to explain in detail how to flash a stripped ftf of that "Flash everything in 'C69XX_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf';" and besides when i open that stripped ftf there are so many files i dont know what to do with them or flash it

Downgrade to .534 with the FTF provided by NUT (Post ##3), then Root with Bin4ry method (Best One), Install SuperSU from Play Store, Install XZDualRecovery (you should know Now which option) and grant everything in SuperSU, recovery is needed to install Pre-Rooted Stock FTF (without it you can Dream about Rooted Android), then go to the page of you prefered Stock Android 4.3 or 4.4 and follow the instruction "How TO". HOW? Reboot in Recovery, Flash the .zip Rooted Android, Power off and don't reboot, Flash from Flashtool the Stripped FTF. Reboot and enjoy your Rooted Device.
Simply like that!!

You flash it just like any other FTF, do not open it.
All ftf files have multiple files in them, they are basically a zip archive. In fact the stripped FTF has LESS files in it than the big ones....

NO, you flash it just like it says in [NUT]s instructions.
Just like any other FTF file, there is no difference.
Just like this

That has exactly what you need to do...

I don't know why the extension of the stripped file is in .zip. Put that stripped file in Flashtool>firmware folder and if Flashtool recognize the file then you are ready to go, if not, change the Extension of that file from .zip to .ftf and try again. Same way like the downgrade, which I assume you did.

Yes, its a .zip to help with the download from [NUT]s server
I forgot that
Just change the .zip to .FTF and all is good.

BTW, after rename the extension you have to Reboot Flashtool (v0.9.15).

a .ftf file is just a .zip archive with a different extension. It needs to be .ftf for flashtool to recognise it as a (F)lash(T)ool (F)ile
still not showing

Hello,
I have my ZR (5503) rooted with 4.4 the bootloader is locked. Since I am not a dev or something i want to test it first. I tell what i did if a dev want to know how i did it.
I had a ZR with 4.1/rooted/recovery on it.
I used a 10.5.A.0.530 NCB file for to start.
I followed this guide (thread) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307311
Almost at the end you have to flash the created zip in recovery. After that i flashed the SuperSU_fix.zip and update-SuperSU-v1.86.zip (i dont know if it was needed).
Then i switch the mobile off and flash the FTF file (10.5.A.0.530NCB) with system excluded (flashtool).
After this i boot in 4.4 and then checked if i had root and it was. The recovery was lost but i managed to get it back with the ZRDUALRECOVERY
Now i go to do the proces again and make a tutorial and maybe put the files somewhere.
I am happy already,
Try to use the Remount reboot fix by nut
and use foldermount and check as this is the most important thing to me

Hello,
I found a way for to get root with kitkat 4.4 and a locked bootloader.
Try at won risk! I am not responsible for things that go wrong.
what you need for to start :
working recovery and root 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3 (i had a 4.1 android version)
Flashtool
steps:
download :
zrkitkat5503.zip https://mega.co.nz/#!DYZwTRhL!6kYealPTKNZT_YX7Zgp3gvs6BP7dcBcVa7FyZBw72qg
stripped rom 4.4 : https://mega.co.nz/#!2YZn3LyB!JKCaBQdMpkqxiO6UbbsXeF3aNgvaoe9Z6iNEERCF7aY
Update Super SU: https://mega.co.nz/#!LEIwGDCS!KVxVB-wYlClhblPY-g5MQ71D_7U2acd7hwwqAxJj20c
Recovery: https://mega.co.nz/#!GIpWEJjJ!0gEIZawEwKuvmEZ4LQm-4ZCmduoy7kxwxDLSResqvUQ
copy kitkatzr5503.zip to your external memorycard.
unzip the su-binary fix and copy it to memorycard.
boot in recovery and wipe cache partition,wipe Dalvik cache and wipe Data/Factory reset.
flash the kitkatzr5503.zip and after that flash the su-binary fix.
DONT BOOT!
power off and get your phone in flashmode , flash the stipped 4.4 rom with flashtool.
reboot and you will have root, install zrdualrecovery again and then everything works.
for sure someone else can make a more nice way for to install it but this works. And if someone make a better tutorial let me know. Also i dont have experience with MEGA for file sharing. If there is a better way let me know.
succes

Yes you can as the kernel in the picture expresses the version of the 4.4 version of android
