[Q] Wifi and 4g at the same time - Moto X Q&A

I have been searching for a way to do this for months. I have a gopro that has WiFi to broadcast the picture to my phone. The problem is that it turns off the data on my phone so I receive no messages and can do nothing with data. I have root, and am willing to test apps, but i need to be able to use both local wifi for the video and 4G/3G for internet usage. Thanks for anybody to help me out.

I don't get it? Anything that uses data, normally uses WiFi too. Either or.
And no...the two can't be on at the same time.

Oh...so you mean the WiFi has no internet connected. I get it.
Sorry though....never heard of such a thing as you're asking. Perhaps someone else has.
Good luck!

I'm confused. Why can't you tether the GoPro to your phone using the hotspot? Still connected through wifi but you don't lose data.

The Gopro acts like a seperate wireless accesspoint. With that said, the Gopro does not connect to a wireless network when I am traveling in a car. My phone does not have a hotspot option. I have a modified version on my phone. So when i connect to the camera it completely disconnects from everything. I do have root though. But if it is just not possible then so be it.
Thanks for Everybody's help

Yes much like that, but i need it for all data not just downloading files. if it can do it for one application, it should be able to do it for all of them. or at least select ones. I do have root so i would be able to select which apps have and do not have the access to 4G all the time.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Well if you have tasker you can have a profile for when you're connected with your gopro and a task that disconnects, polls for messages, then reconnects. You could poll for a minute every 10 minutes as to not obstruct work flow. Or even longer if you want. I think what you want to happen is a limitation of android itself and for good reason. You'd burn through your battery on accident all the time if you could do that natively. Or run up your data.
At any rate I'd go with tasker. There's so much you can do with that it's ridiculous.

Tasker is an automation application found on the Play Store for about $3.00... In my opinion it is worth far more than that. It does have a bit of a learning curve but the benefits of what it can do are amazing. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm
You can use scripts in it but I was suggesting something different. Using Tasker you should be able to set up a profile for whenever you are tethered to your GoPro so that every so often Tasker will automatically turn off WiFi for a length of time of your choosing and then reactivate WiFi and the connection to your GoPro. This process could be set on a loop every time you connect to your GoPro; this way you won't miss any pending notifications that are trying to be pushed through without having to manually disable and re enable WiFi. You would only have to take note of when it would disable the WiFi so that your pictures can be transferred through to your phone properly.
New Profile= State> Net> Wifi Connected> Your GoPro's SSID or MAC address
Task Actions= Task> Wait> 10min (or however long you figure is a good time between cycles)
Net> WiFi> Set off
Task> Wait> 1min (or however long you want it to poll for notifications)
Net> WiFi> Set on
I know this isn't a perfect solution to your problem but it should, in theory, work.

You know what, That worked perfectly. until the app tried to auto reconnect. then my phone seemed to get stuck in a loop. it kept turning the wifi on then off then on then off. it was strange. I am attempting to find a setting for it to auto reconnect and turn it off but there has been no luck so far. Thanks for your help so far.

What is the rom that you use? Did you do clean flash? Did you flash any kernel? Did you try to forget the network and reconnect again? More information is needed.

i'm using the stock ROM but i did unlock and root. i am using a asus RT-N56U with WPA2 personal AES encryption for security. Phone set for best wifi performance, wi-fi band on auto, keep wi-fi on during sleep.
I can connect and it will work usually especially if i turn off wifi then turn it back on. However, the problem exists that the length of time the connection will remain with the ability for loading webpages/video is unknown. It could be 2-5 minutes, but i've also tested it and its been able to hold a connection while constantly streaming a netflix movie.
I'm wondering if it could be resolved by setting my phone to connect to my home network via a static ip? seen things related to that elsewhere. It is very annoying and troublesome to have to constantly turn on/off the wifi when im sitting in the same place. I could be reading a webpage then click a link on it and then it will fail to load even though showing i am connected. Then i have to switch on and off. This has happened plenty of times within 30 minutes i've had to turn it on and off 3-4 times. To me that is not "functional".
is it something with my phone or router? or both?

you definitely shouldnt have to connect with a static. it may help but what about when u r in public do you still have the problem?? if not then maybe u should try a new home networking device or play around with the security setting on ur router.
my wifi seems to work fine other than my speedtest results are only 3mbps up. i should be getting as much as 55, i used to get up to 40 on my gs3. i am totally stock, with the same settings.

[Q] Wifi problems with multiple router networks

I seem to be having pretty severe wifi issues on networks that are composed of a large number of routers (i.e. campus/business networks) where going between routers will result in the phone believing it is connected, but not being able to send/receive data. This is evidenced both by the lack of notifications/apps working, as well as the wifi icon in the quick toggle panel being orange (which indicates no data being sent/recieved, I believe) despite having full signal. This means that without any external indication that anything is wrong, my phone essentially does not work anymore until I turn the wifi off and back on. Previous phones (galaxy nexus, droid) as well as computers did not have this issue on the same network.
Has anyone else noticed this problem, and if so, found any way to get around it other than remembering to reset the wifi power every time you move between areas?
It sounds like there are multiple WAPs all using the same SSID, and Android is not requesting a new IP address when it disconnects from one WAP and connects to another. You could probably work around the issue using Tasker, and have it toggle Wifi off and on again any time Wifi is disconnected. I you go that route I would recommend using the trial version available from the developer's site, or one of the many similar apps that are available in the Play Store for free.
There may be something more to this though. Hopefully someone else has another idea.

I'm having the same issues both out in public and at my home. This issue didn't seem to exist prior to 4.4 update. Now I'm constantly having to toggle my WiFi on and off or toggle airplane mode and also hitting the symbol down at the bottom left on my phone and on my router at the same time. If someone has any information to correct this would be great. Like I said I never had this problem prior to 4.4.

Thanks for the suggestion! One question though: does the wifi actually "disconnect" when there is a handover between two routers of the same network? Is a handover while constantly connected something tasker could detect?

As far as I know, Android doesn't "roam" seamlessly from one AP to another even when the SSIDs are the same. I'm pretty sure Tasker would see this as Wifi being disconnected (albeit briefly). You could then tell Tasker to turn off Wifi for 5 seconds and then turn it back on again.

I finally got around to making a tasker script to do this, and tried it out for a few days, but unfortunately it does not seem to detect the changing between the different routers on my institute network as having the wifi disconnected, and thus doesn't solve the issue. It was a good idea to try though!
I've cross-posted the issue at the link below in hope motorola will see this, but if anyone knows a better way to report this, please let me know.

A wifi conundrum (unsolved)

Hi everyone
I have a profile that that kicks in every 30 mins from 8 am to 9pm, to sync my account. I have set it up to use wifi first, but if there is no wifi connection it will go to my mobile data instead.
Now here is the problem if my phone is on standby it always connects via mobile data regardless of a wifi connection is available. But if I am using my device at the time when the task runs then it will connect to wifi. I have checked my, keep wif on in sleep option and it is set to always.
Could anyone explain as to what this is happening?
Thanks in advance
What is your Android version?
I am currently using a custom rom called exodus which is currently based on marshmallow.
Check if Tasker is excludied from Battery Optimization and whether Wi-Fi is not deactivated while the phone is in sleep mode in Settings/Wi-Fi/Advanced/Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep.
yep tasker is excluded from battery optimisation and the allow wifi during sleep policy is always.
If you're turning wifi on with tasker action wifi turn on, try instead of that shell script "svc wifi enable".
Ok thanks, I will let you know the out come of this. I was using secure settings to enable Wifi as the command built in tasker, is not compatible from kitkat and onwards if I remember correctly.
I found out "svc wifi enable" command does exactly the same thing
Discovered I'm having the very same problem on cm13 and the batch jobs have been done by initialized mobile data. Finally found out a solution to initialize wifi instead of mobile data. I've no limited data plan, but wifi is more battery friendly.

Yes under normal circumstances it takes about 20 seconds to connect.
No because for some reason my wifi will only switch on if the screen is on.
I also have uninstaled my custom kernel, but this issue still appears from time to time.
There's a setting in wifi connection settings that you can set to that says "keep Wi-Fi on during sleep"
This same setting is often repeated in battery apps like powernap, naptime, better battery saver etc.
Even though the wording is the same, I don't believe they are all touching the same setting so go find those apps if you have them installed.
Also, disable all native battery savers (including Samsung 2 or 3 different ones,, doze, battery optimization etc etc just to see if your problem goes away.... Which it will. At least you'll know though
I have the same problem with Wi-Fi connection.
I have a profile to turn Wi-Fi on and try to connect when certain conditions meet and the screen is off in that case.
It seems that the phone has difficulties turning Wi-Fi on and connecting to it when screen is off. Tasker does manage to turn Wi-Fi on but the phone somehow does not connect *reliably* in all cases.
Tasker is excluded from battery optimization, Wi-Fi on during sleep. I tried turning cpu on for a short time hoping that it will connect, but still no result.
The only possible solution might be turning the screen on briefly at that moment.
If anybody has a better idea, you are more than welcome to share!

I can certainly say that turning the screen on will enable wifi, as I have resulted to this as well. But unfortunately I do not know any other solutions to try.

Before reflash, just disable xposed and see what you get... I will bet half of this soft taco I'm eating your problem disappears with greenify and or amplify. I'm not saying don't use them at all... Just make sure it works without them. I used to have some serious battery apps, but found after disabling, my battery was IMMENSELY better. And I had no config to deal with. But first things first... IT'S without a doubt, no question, a battery app setting or a system app that's being put to sleep that should be white listed

wifi off when there is no wifi around, or wifi is disconnected

im usuing tasker 5.0b5, and am wondering if anyone could help with a profile that will turn off wifi completely when there isnt any wifi around or when wifil has been disconnected. and also hoping a task with this profile to turn wifi back on when wifi is visible again. i seen a few tutorials and youtube vids on how to do this, but they were in reference to older tasker versions. can anyone help? thanks
I use these 3 profiles to basically do what your asking. You will have to change the profile with cell near to what ever cell towers are near you.

Yes use all 3 at same time, make sure your variables are getting set. The one profile sets wifilocation variable when your near your cell towers, then the second one will see that wifilocation is set and activate causing it to turn on wifi and wait for 20 sec and if its not connected will turn wifi off. you may need a profile that turns wifi off when screen is off or go into wifi settings on phone and set it to not stay on when screen is off. Also you may need to turn on cell workaround and/or use new cell api under taskers preference depending on the model of your phone. You may not need the If WiFi connected profile, I think I used that for another project.

Honestly this is a complicated way of doing something very simple.
The most accurate and low battery way to accomplish this is to have 1 profile with a state context of "cell near" and set it to scan while you walk around your house for 5 min and then set it down and let it scan for another 10 min. (This ensues all available cell towers in your area are accounted for) and make tier entry task enable wifi. So when you're close to home, tasker will enable WiFi and Android will handle reconnecting.
In the exit task,Turn wifi off so whenever you leave your area WiFi will be deactivated and you are using nearly 0% battery to achieve it

Ok then the best thing to do is create a profile event context of WiFi disconnected and make the entry task merely set a variable %WIFITIMER to %TIMES+120
then create another profile with a time context and set if to activate on %WIFITIMER (which would be set for 120 seconds after the WiFi disconnected and make the entry task WiFi disable
Then create one more profile with an event context of WIFI CONNECTED and set the entry task to clear the Wi-Fi timer. This will ensure that if the Wi-Fi reconnects, the Wi-Fi disable profile won't be able to activate because the time will never be Null
The logic is: if the Wi-Fitimer is set then when the current time matches it, disable the Wi-Fi, but if it reconnects, the timer is disabled.
Edit
The benefits of these profiles is more than merely an elegant approach, but also the least battery impacting method to have Tasker wait until a certain time to do something. Using wait actions inside tasks might be one of the worst things for battery life

Is there a way that when I come into my home my wifi turns on automatically and turns data off in this app? I figured out how to turn wifi on with tasker but I want to know now if it can also turn data off when wifi connects. Galaxy s10+ so no root obv

Best option is using auto input and Tasker.
Auto input is basically a Tasker plugin that creates a virtual touch on your screen without root.
Or else you can also do this using autoTools secure settings but you will need adb for that and it won't work after reboot

Ok. One thing maybe you can help me with. I've noticed that after setting up my wifi with tasker the wifi shuts off from time to time. I don't think it's signal strength because I'm either 3 or full bars. Then like a few seconds later tasker will turn it back on. I know its triggered from the cell tower but I have no idea.

I don't experience the same.
It works just perfect for me.
Are you sure you are not doing something wrong?
Try mailing the developer
It could just be my router. It's in the basement and I'm 2 floors above
As for determining your proximity to your location, one good idea is to use two different sized or two location geo fences that you can cross reference against each other
