This bugged me so I googled it... should be nailed to the top of the QandA forum.. every Moto droid ive had original, droid x, droid 3 and razr m have had this but moto x doesn't have it until you root and activate it??? Did they hire Homer Simpson as the new developer... wait.. it's the google maps idiot.. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/surprising-news-moto-x-has-a-notification-light/
The fact that Active Display works and the X8 chipset was designed specifically to provide that functionality - that Active Display IS how you receive notifications - seems perfectly logical to me. The Moto X is not a Droid device, it doesn't act or work like one in most respects, and the Active Display + Touchless Control are both aspects that further create a divide between the Droid line and the Moto line.
I get the idea of a "notification light" but I mean really, if people don't buy a Moto X to make use of Active Display and whatever, why the hell are people buying it?
It won't work as a notification light. Actually, I think cm or something got it to work ONLY when the phone is plugged into a charger. Kinda pointless. Lol
It will work as a battery charging indicator with a tasker profile. Or app made by tasker.
But yeah, its not really a notification led.
So if it isn't plugged into a charger....it won't do anything.

I like the active display way better than the light. Seems like a step back. On the other hand I hate restrictions so they should have made it an option in the strange case that someone would prefer it.

It's not a notification light. It's a light for when you are charging a dead phone. It cannot be setup as a notification light....did you even read the article you linked us to?
The Moto X has Active Display, so it doesn't need a notification light....the screen IS the notification light. The green light behind the speaker HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH NOTIFICATIONS.....so I don't know what you're on about.
You don't have to "manually activate it"....it already works & functions as intended out-of-the-box. The light comes on when you plug up your dead phone. That's how it was intended to function, and that's how it functions.
I use it only to light up when the battery is fully charged.
If i could have a active notification for this, i would preffer it

It's not a notification light, it's for when the phone is COMPLETELY dead so you have some indication that it's charging. They didn't put a notification light because ActiveNotifications was designed for this phone. Y'all think they'll be available, seeing as how this seems to be based on the droid turbo with most of the same hardware?
I had a moto x (2013) and loved those features, just wasn't crazy about the battery life.
A nexus 6 with working active display/moto voice would be amazing.
It looks like Google has incorporated similar features into Android itself.
There's something new called Ambient Display, which is similar to Moto Display.
You can say "OK Google" with the screen off, which is functionally similar to Moto Voice — albeit without the custom launch phrases.
Moto Voice records your voice and then pipes that recording into Google Now. Since this new feature launches Google Now directly, it's probably a lot faster than Moto Voice.
Is there anything setting need to do before OK Google works with screen off?

To be honest I rather have Moto Display than Ambient Display, Google's version just has soo many flaws, and sometimes its not consistent and not only that, theres not much features
If porting the Moto Display and other goodies from the X will be possible I'll be keeping a close eye out
I exported most of the files required for it, but am stuck at the Motorola-specific signature process... And life is getting in the way as well.
Anyone see that China is getting the moto x pro? It's basically the nexus 6 without the nexus branding. Any bets on whether it'll come with the moto tweaks and that a ROM can be made for the nexus 6?
Does anyone know if the moto voice has been ported for the Nexus 6? I like that the moto voice will read your messages to you.

Not yet. I think the best bet would be perhaps getting a dump from the Moto X Pro, which is the Chinese variation of the Nexus 6. China doesn't have Google services, so the Nexus branding has been dropped and all Google apps, but Moto looks to have added their apps to it. Some pics here, which you can see some of the icons on the home screen (unsure if it will have all of the Moto apps though).

Theres a Moto X Pro system dump in this thread.
The Moto X Pro bootanimation.zip uses video files and videodesc.txt instead of .png images and desc.txt like Nexus 6, but it works by just copying /system/bin/bootanimation file from Moto X Pro to Nexus 6, changing permissions and rebooting. Can the same be said for the Moto Apps? Just copy all the apks from /system/priv-app on Moto X Pro to same place on Nexus 6, as well as the /system/lib and /system/bin files?
If anyone knows how to do this it would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime I'll be searching for threads that point me in the right direction and trying the method I mentioned to see what happens.

Now that Moto is making a version of the Nexus 6 but with their software for China will it be possible to port moto assist/moto voice and display? It would be great if we could get these feature on the Nexus 6 and since this is identical in every way except for it not saying Nexus and having motos software tweaks.

I am hoping for better accessories also.

No, the Moto ones are much better. Goto a carrier store and try Moto voice and display and then let me know if you still think they are the same. Ambient display isn't as good as the Moto one, and google now is nice (and used with moto voice) but you can't use custom commands with it.
My favorite thing about my wife's moto x is to be able to twist the phone twice to activate the camera. Theres some other cool features she has that I don't but that is by far my favorite

The twist to activate camera is cool, I really like the moto display because its a better version of the ambient display on the Nexus even though the Moto has both. I wouldn't trade my Nexus for the Moto, I just want the Moto tweaks. I do like the voice commands and how you can make up any phrase to activate it (which can be funny sometimes depending on what you use)

Most of the internet agrees that ambient display is far nicer than motorola, actually showing you the notification instead of just the fact that there is one.
http://www.droid-life.com/2014/11/0...-display-is-a-very-cool-take-on-moto-display/
What they say about not being able to use sensors (proximity/IR/motion) to refresh the ambient display is.... not entirely true. AOSP 5 does have ALL of this provision in the source code, but it has to be activated with an appropriate sensor (if available).
As for custom commands with google now... you really should look into this more, since there *are* ways to do that with google now. For example, tasker with autovoice.
As far as the quality of voice dictation goes, the google implementation (which probably uses the same backend) is pretty solid... as far as voice recognition goes.

I understand where you are coming from but some people including myself prefer the Moto display. I don't care if I can't gesture over it, I just like the way the Moto Display looks compared to the ambient one. If it could work without the added sensors (which it will since the X Pro will likely have this) then I'm fine with that.
I know there are ways to implement the custom voice commands, however its more natural the way that its done on the X. I have tried some other alternatives but I wasn't a fan of them. The Nexus 6 has a low power chip for active listening if I recall correctly so this shouldn't be a issue if and when we can port those features over.
I also wouldn't say that the "majority of people prefer the ambient display" we can't generalize things like that because after all statistics can be very bias and wrong if they are not collected correctly. I have seen reviews including AP (android police) who stated they liked the Moto version better, but again its user preference.
I'm not saying you are wrong at all, I would just prefer the Moto tweaks on my Nexus phone because I like them.

I'm mostly on board with you. I like the ambient display looks vs moto display but I wish the screen wouldn't light up fully when interacting with the notification. In my opinion it totally defeats the purpose of having it black and white. Ambient display is inconsistent in which sometimes it doesn't come up. Moto display is the better functioning of the two.

Don't forget moto display with moto assist has a night mode which went light up the screen when you're sleeping or in a movie. Of course you could use priority notifications but this is more convenient in my opinion.

I am using an app that is still in beta called "QuickCamera". I have been using it since the Nexus 5, and it seems to work pretty well on the Nexus 6. As a matter of fact, the camera opens up much faster on the N6 than the N5 did.

Neither removed it. You have to sign up with the community, then click on the link to join the beta, and wait for it to show up for you in the Play Store (some show up in minutes, one or two took over an hour to show up after joining both). This is how pretty much all of betas through the Play Store are handled. I just checked and put screenshots attached to this post.

That's what I kind of figured would be the case. I knew the Moto Actions were optimized for certain devices only so I guess its time to search the play store for a reasonable replacement. Adaptive display isn't doing it for me

Hello everybody.
We all know that Moto Display is very useful and shows incoming notification. In Moto G and E devices, it activates when the phone is moved from its position, or when a flip cover over the phone is opened. However I have heard that in Moto X devices, it activates even if you wave over the proximity sensor.
So I thought of making a small app that does the same. It is on Play Store.

This is a great app, I was missing a lot this feature when moving from Moto X!
Please consider using the Android ActivityRecognitionAPI to trigger the moto display only if the phone is in the "STILL" state. Otherwise the battery will be drained pretty fast when carrying the phone in the pocket, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion, will obviously look into it.
Regarding battery drain, the proximity sensor is always on even if this app is not used (Moto Display activates if you keep the proximity covered for some time and then remove the cover).
Also the app has been designed so that it won't activate MD if the phone is in pocket.
Thanks for the clarification, I was not aware that the proximity sensor is always on. You are right, the Moto Display turns on when the phone is taken out of a pocket, etc. Now I just wonder why Motorola decided not to offer this as part of the stock application. To protect Moto X sales?

Not a stupid question. I did mention that the ROM needs to be stock ROM. So this confusion might arise.
This app has nothing to do with root directly. It doesn't check for safety net. It will work whether you are rooted or not.
There is however an exception. If you use any root based utility to uninstall Moto Display apk from system, this app will no longer work.
