Pre-Order or Wait for Root? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How many of you are actually going to get the N4 and run stock on it? I'm considering pre-ordering, though I feel like I should wait until it gains root.

Better off preordering for the $200 samsung promo

I have JUMP. This wouldn't make a difference for me lol

While I've always rooted my phones, I think the utility of doing so is shrinking all the time, and more so with the Note models because you lose the s-pen unless you use a stock ROM. I'm not going to wait for root.

I am planning to run stock until the root is available, but even then I will most likely run stock-based ROMs. AOSP ROMs tend to not be stable and have broken features on Samsung devices. Nova launcher, Xposed, and some root requiring apps give me a perfect compromise.

I'm not a fan of AOSP roms either. I run Touchwiz roms. I haven't been stock in years.
I wonder how long before we'll see root on it. I'm definitely considering upgrading and running stock for the time being. The screen and camera upgrades look awesome.

This is the route I might stick with this time around. I'm a current Galaxy S3 (ROM CM 11) owner and I expect that with the Note 4, a rooted stock ROM with Nova and Xposed would be best so I don't lose all enhancements. With the S3 the camera quality definitely took a hit.
My concern about Xposed is if we get Android L (down the road) and it's supposed to run in ART, Xposed won't work until it's updated and no idea when that'll be.
On the other hand, I've heard of some Note app alternatives but no app names ever mentioned.

I also wonder about losing my unrestricted tethering. I tether to my tablet for work, and I feel like I'd destroy data on a stock rom.

Well. I'm now pre ordered. Let's see if I keep the pre-order.

Mind explaining how? Did you do so online?
I went onto my tmobile, upgraded/preordered using jump, signed my eip in browser window and everything n saw no options for getting trade in credit towards my eip balance.
How the crap do you get trade in credit towards a jump upgrade anyways? Doors it come off your eip balance? Before creating your payment(like down payment credit) so it finances a lower amount or just towards the next payment(finance the full 749 n just goes towards first $31 payment?)...
Please enlighten us, I'd enjoy $200 bucks in my pocket AND jumping for only tax up front..

I ordered using the normal upgrade, then traded in the phone online. I then called and asked them to cancel the order then reorder with JUMP. It still kept the old trade in as well.

I could see that still working if someone wanted to go through the trouble... they don't like to ever send anything back once you've sent it in.... so no choice but to give you the credit even if you cancel...
Did you get a credit receipt already?

Guys dont worry about running stock on the new N4. When you flash Tweaked rom, which is based off of stock Touchwiz, it will be the best phone experience you ever had. I promise.

I was asked what the process would be once a exploit is found. Once it is found we will wait for the dev to specify how he wants the money sent. Usually it is just a donation to their paypal account. On rare occasions the dev will just say they want money donated to charity but that is rare and the dev should get paid for their hard work. I will follow up to make sure everyone pays.
This is gonna be a hard one to achieve, not because it's going to be difficult but because the S4 Active is an AT&T exclusive and the international variant doesn't seem that popular.
Need an Active forum on here. No pun intended haha

That is what I did... I took out the bloat apps... Honestly the bootloader for me is a "in the long run" thing. I am more than happy with the current state of my S4 Active, just wouldn't mind the early update and future mods that require a flash

Me too. I've already debloated and used FolderMount to move my big games to the external SD card so the bootloader unlock can wait as long as it needs too. The stock ROM on here is blazing fast and has everything I need. I am a happy camper.

If this happened he'd most likely be able to walk away with the bounty for the S4 AT&T, S4 Verizon and S4 active, so he'd be roughly $1000 richer.
With that, I'll throw in $25 because I don't think a BL unlock will happen.
Might also want to stipulate in the OP whether or not the boot loader needs to be unlocked or if a workaround to run custom kernels and recoveries would be good enough.

Isn't the S4 Active Bootloader still exploitable with the LOKI exploit from djrbliss? The I9505G bootloader is and is more recent. All you'd need is to change the offsets for the check_sigs function in loki_patch.c and you should be good to go.
Of course someone (I guess you know who I I am talking about) can always repack it with a fancy name and claim he's hacked the Active bootloader all on his own eh ?

Updated. Thanks.
@geohot if you thought getting root was quick money finding a way to unlock the bootloader (or a work around) will bring in donations for AT&T S4 users, AT&T S4 active users, Verizon S4 active users and probably a handful of international users (and maybe future note 3 users, s4 zoom, S4 mini). No one will be able to steal you joy because this has not be possible by ANY dev to date Flex your muscles and blow our minds once again :good:
The only way were gonna be able to unlock our boot loader is when theres a leak from att or Verizon with the keys or whatever. It'll happen sooner or later but not now and its not hackable. Its 2013 lol these companies are really genius.

Google does the update and then sends it to Samsung for testing. IF Samsung decides the update is worthy and fits into their business plan for the life of the phone, they will test the update and correct things that are specific to the S6. IF that is completed then they send the update to Verizon, who in turn, decides if it fits in their business plan and the planned end of life for the product. If Verizon decides to pass it along then they update the code with their specifics and then they release it to the phones.
All of that has to go good before we knaves might see an update.
Unfortunately Android updates and timeline does not fit into the end of life plans for phones by the carriers. That is why we usually only get one or two updates.
Just saw this while searching online tonight.

This whole fiasco almost looks to me like a sabotage or complete incompetence among engineers. Do they actually know what the problem is? Because apparently it is not what they said it was. So what happens if the phone gets stolen or lost?

Seems to me this issue started soon after pulling the battery process to their internal plants instead of outsourcing to reputable manufacturers. Looks like it was a corner cutting, cost saving routine. But look how much it's costing them now. Seems they took this process for granted instead of making a quality product they screwed themselves so hard, the note line could be cursed. The upcoming S8, I won't be an adopter, watch everyone else get burned just like we are now.
Yea I plan on holding on to mine too. I been thinking all day what phone could I replace it with and I literally came up with nothing. I got a few cases on the way, 256 gb sd card is on the way, gear vr on the way ????

Note 8 "Rent-a-Center" lock

I just bought a "unlocked" note 8 and everything was clean when I checked it and everything works and is activated but when I was scrolling though the settings I saw under "knox" there's a Rent-a-center profile with the contact number and everything on it and had no idea why, So I've been doing research about what it means and a looking for a solution when I found out that the phone is though them and if it's not paid off they can remotely lock you out of it and I want to prevent that from happening because I paid alot of money for this phone! I had another note 8 before this one that i broke the screen on and it was locked to AT&T(which I don't have) so I got help on here with rooting it and putting new firmware on it which worked. So I don't know if doing that again will take care of the issue or what I should do? If anyone has any advice or knows what I should do please let me know!! Thank you!
If you own the phone, ie, paid for it all then I'd go back to where you got it from and tell them to take it off.
Contact seller and possibly even rent-a-center to check what status of phone is. If issues do exist, demand a refund of the seller.
Wow, was curious how much they charge.

I already did that and they said it wasn't paid off fully and to contact the person I bought it from which I've already tried but nothing.. That's why I'm looking for a solution now before I get locked out because they said it's only a matter of time before it happens when the store it was rented from shuts it off and then I'm screwed. ".....I got help on here with rooting it and putting new firmware on it which worked. So I don't know if doing that again will take care of the issue or what I should do?"
No. Root isn't an option in this scenario nor is flashing new firmware.
It appears that Rent-A-Center utilizes a Mobile Device Management solution which, in turn, is dependent on KNOX.
With the current root option for the Snapdragon 835 & Note 8, we don't the ability to alter or remove the partition in question.
However
There are services available ONLINE which MIGHT help you; look for yourself.
Even if you were able to remove the lock, they could still blacklist the device for non-payment.
This puts you back at square one.
Talk to Rent-A-Center directly and explain the situation.

Sounds to me like the person you bought it from pulled a fast one, phone is probably not even close to being paid off & he sold it.
Like AHE said, even if you were able to remove that RAC lock on it, they can still blacklist if that's the case (phone not being paid off).

Most of Rent-a-Center's clientele couldn't borrow a buck for a soda. They don't have the credit rating to get a phone at a more mainstream price.
And before anyone screams about RAC's "predatory" business model, consider that most of their customers got into the credit mess they're in by getting stuff they couldn't afford or thought they were too slick to not pay and get away with it. They're a match made in heaven.

You have good points. But rent a center places are straight up predatory business. If customers credit not able to get phone on payment plan. Then straight out deny them. For the better off of person.
I would feel like I had no soul working and selling to people at places like that. Double price stepping over the line. Tripled price jesus christ that's insane! Those type of places and others should be banned.

Nothing like paying $500 over original price. Like I said rent a center and checkNcash type places should be banned. Jesus christ those companies are pathetic.
OP I feel really bad for getting shafted
I've figured out how to make it work if you're interested
If you were able to root it, install Titanium backup, there is a file that is installed by Rent a center. It cannot be unistalled..I tried to and it vanishes for a few minutes but is reinstalled. Even after device is paid off you have to call rent a center and get their loss prevention department and they will remotely remove it. Even when I rooted and installed a rom the file was there. Trust me on this, I was silly enough to get a device from them yrs ago and even after the 90 days same as cash it took them over a month to take the file off my phone.

Good for you! That guy probably works in rent a center!!

Every time I sideload an update zip file, it restores my phone on the last step.

I put the zip on the root of SD. How do I avoid the factory reset?
Anyone?

What exactly are you flashing? Are you doing it in TWRP, or stock recovery? People really need to be more specific when they're opening these threads, I see one question that they ask and then I have to reply with multiple questions just to know what they're on about.
Does your update zip contain the CSC? If so, I know that flashing firmware through Odin, there are two CSC files, one called CSC and one called CSC home, or something to that effect, one wipes your phone, the other doesn't.
That's about all I can think of, you really need to give more details.

I mean you can side load an update zip in stock recovery.
If it's an update zip as in a manually installed ota it does have an csc..
Also op is likely an att or Sprint user so wiping when manually flashing is a fact of life.

If you are on Sprint or ATT then no, manually flashing an OTA will always wipe your device.

Ah okay, seems like an awful pain for anyone that has that device, I assume it's a firmware that's branded by them as well so waiting for official OTAs would take even longer.

Not really. In the states sometimes non carrier branded software takes longer, some times it comes first. It just depends.
The user is likely loading leaked OTA updates from att which means it's not an official release. Just hopping the line a little.

Oh, that's a surprise actually, here in the UK the carrier branded can sometimes take months longer, but how do the carriers release new versions even before Samsung pushes them? Do the carriers over there build there own firmware themselves rather than just taking what Samsung releases and adding all their crap to it?

Samsung builds all of the software builds and carriers test them when they get them but carriers take priority I am assuming because users on carrier plans using carrier branded phones fall in the 90 percentile of cell phone subscribers.
Now I am just making that number up but our market only recently started being a little more diverse when it comes to unlocked options.
It's the difference in paying 800 bucks up front and paying 200 to subsidize and stay on a contract you were probably keeping anyways.

Ah right, well that's interesting. And yeah mobile contracts are the main method of acquiring devices here too, but I chose not to upgrade my plan this time and went on SIM only contract with 20gb data, then I used PayPal credit to buy the note 9 from Switzerland with no VAT, which works out significantly cheaper than the £70 + per month to get the phone on contract with any service provider here, that's without paying several hundred pounds up front for the device.

In my almost five years on T-Mobile this is the second time I've done a phone through them. Usually I sell my last and buy the new one out right.
This year they offered my half off in payments over 24 months. So I went for it. I certainly don't like the feeling of a contract but ultimately it works out better price wise but I usually push people to pay as you go alternatives and ysed phones from swappa if they aren't addicted to the "New Big Thing" like me.
I did just read an article from last year that said about 12% of the mobile phones in the US are carrier unlocked.
Now it's making more sense though since we moved away from subsidized and now we lease for the full price like you all over the pond. I think I will try very hard to keep this one for two years though. The prices are just too high. That or grabbing last years model pixel since at this point battery and camera are my big must haves. Ya know if Samsung keeps climbing in price.

Yeah I've always had phones from the carriers over here, it's always been the best and cheapest option, maybe not cheapest in total, but cheapest on a month by month basis.
But since I discovered PayPal offer credit now, being able to buy anything off eBay and pay in monthly instalments, just worked out much cheaper for me,
I saved 180 on the retail price here, and although I will end up paying some interest, over the time I've paid it off, it is still miles better than £70 a month, and I got 4 months interest free as well which will help in paying a big chunk of it before interest kicks in.
And yeah phones are getting way more expensive these days, they're beginning to sky rocket, the note 9 is the most expensive thing I've ever bought in my life haha. I certainly won't be doing it again for at least a few years, with the hardware we've got it will be at least a couple years before it starts to really fall behind, although saying that, smartphone technology is coming along faster than ever.
Think what we have now, it was only 20 years ago that the Nokia 5110 was the top end of the phone market haha. Now we're looking at foldable screens and such in the near future.

Yeah I've been quiet good for a long time now and stuck with more mid range phones, but on seeing the note 9 I just needed it, for reasons haha. It didn't help seeing it being advertised on TV every 5 minutes, so if you asked me, it's Samsung's fault.
And yeah, good chat, and I think we partially answered his question at least haha.

That's the first explanation that makes sense. I haven't heard that before. I'm on AT&T. Guess I have to live with it. Not a huge deal as I back everything up but it's a bit of a hassle changing all the setting back.
I use https://samsung.firmware.science for any new firmware that comes out.

Yes this phone has a hell of a lot of settings compared to any I've had before. Out of curiosity, have you never tried Google's device settings backup option? I never have, and I've always wondered if it did a good job of it.

Yeah go to accounts, then backup and restore, then press Google account and you'll get this screen, I've never tried it, but as you've no choice but to wipe when updating, there's no harm you giving it a go, if you do, I wouldn't mind knowing the outcome, it may only backup certain settings, but if it does all of them, that would be great.
