Too white photos with flash...after the update to 4.4.4? - Moto X Q&A

Ok, not sure if this is a software problem or hardware, the fact is that when taking a photo in a dark room with the flash, it comes out way too white, as if reflecting light, the process focus with flash and photo capture is too fast, so the flash intensity is not measured in and out very white photos ...
I'm not sure if this problem arose after the upgrade to 4.4.4 tmo, but I do not remember this happening in android 4.4.2
Here are some examples:
This photo was taken with Moto X, same conditions, same distance, and in a completely dark room.

Well, what you think? is a software problem or hardware? (or is it just my moto x)? ... to you the camera works well?

anyone?

bump, I'm just the only one?

It must be 444. If I energize the flashlight before I call the cam the cam will not open. Yet the constant flash is not constant, but only flashes with the shutter. Don't we need a flash to be on before the shutter?

Exactly! You're absolutely right, that's the problem the shutter takes the picture while the flash ... any possible solution?

Low light photos have been a problem on the Moto X from day one. I find keeping HDR off is helpful in low light.

That's well known, but what about the photos that there is no light ?, that's when the flash is used, and now this problem arose unusable leaving the camera in environments with no lighting.

Try a camera app from play store, to see if it's the same.

This was the first thing I noticed after upgrading to 4.4.4. Quite wondering that very few people have mentioned this so far. All others have actually praised it, that it got so bright, yeaaaaa, heck!
It might be better for shooting from a very big distance, as now I see that my whole 14x12' room gets nicely lit up when the flash is on, but for close to medium range distance it's just unusable. I would take the older dimmed flash 100 out of 100 times than this bleeding one.

It's the same, is even worse, as the moto x only focus with the stock camera app, any other camera app does not focus with the flash, it only shows the light and take the picture without focusing before.

[Q] Brightness Issue

Hello Guys,
I bought my HTC One from Dubai (Middle east) version 20 days ago, every thing was perfect with the mobile,
Today, the brightness of the mobile went to the highest mode automatically, I tried to reduce it but it hasn't been reduced technically, is there any solution for this ??
Thank You
I just came in here hoping that someone might have had similar to my issue and this seems fairly close.
At least once per day i have to restart my phone because the bightness seems to go so high that i cant control. If i change it, it does not change the screen brightness.
With a restart, it seems to reset the screen back to the regular brightness.
It is getting so annoying have to restart the phone at least twice a day.
I think its a software issue given the fact that it sorts itself with a restart, not sure what to do apart from a hard reset.
If anyone has any ideas or has seen this before, within a thread or not, advice would be appreciated.
Thanks :good:

for me even with restarting it doesn't work, some time I leave the phone for one hour then I come back to it and find it's brightness adjustment working, then eventually it goes to the highest brightness mode without any ability to adjust it and so on!
some times the Phone responds and adjust the brightness correctly (when I leave the phone and come back to it in an hour), then eventually it goes to the high brightness mode again without any ability to adjust it again and so on.
I'm afraid it might be a hardware problem since it's not happening with other users according to the reviews online !
Some people have been reporting defective light sensors. This basically causes the phone to believe you're in direct sunlight, turning off the button lights and setting the screen brightness to max. If your button lights do not light up when this happens, even when indoors, then you have a defective device. Contact HTC.

Thank you for you reply,
but in this case will this happen even if I'm using the automatic brightness mode ??
Thank you
This is a hardware problem. Auto brightness relies on the light sensor. If the light sensor is broken, then the Auto-brightness feature will malfunction.
From http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/htc-one-problems/ :
Problem: Proximity sensors not working
A few people have reported that their sensors aren’t working correctly. You may notice that the capacitive buttons don’t light up and this could actually be a sign that the sensor isn’t working. Try covering the sensors (top left) with your finger and see if the capacitive buttons light up. You can also test the sensors using a free app called Android Sensor Box.
Solution: If they aren’t working then it’s a hardware fault and you’ll have to return the phone and get a replacement.

Mine doesn't seem to have solved itself with that app
I tried putting my fingers ovetthe proximity sensors and it changed the screen back to normal from the original really bright problem.
Should I contact my network and ask for a replacement? That sounds like a hardware issue to me.
Also, whilst on this, what's the nearest to back up everything? HTC Backup? Does that work well? I'll need to back up launcher settings etc too I guess?

[Q] Smart Saving Bug - Anyone else seeing this?

Hello, guys. I am encountering what I think is a very weird bug with Smart Saver. I'm hoping that some other people can test this on their systems and if, it's just me, I'm going to return mine for a new unit.
With Smart Saving enabled, the screen will automatically increase and decrease brightness constantly as different pages and app's come up. In my case, the screen seems to flicker almost every time I swipe and I can't stand it, so I disabled Smart Saver. The icon is OFF on the pull down status panel and it's turned off under settings. However, whenever I reboot, I still encounter the screen flickering and dimming constantly (although it seems to be to a lesser degree). If I pull down the status panel, turn Smart Saving On and then off again, the problem goes away until I reboot the system. This is at least encouraging me that maybe it's just software and I can deal with it for a month or so.
Here's what I want someone else to test for me. Turn Smart Saver off. Turn the tablet off and then on again. Pull down the status menu and carefully watch the screen. The open portion of the home screen will dim once (which is normal). On my system, after about another 1/2 second or so, the screen will flicker or dim again slightly. It does this every time, but it might be hard to notice unless you are looking for it. When side scrolling between home screens, sometimes brightness will increase slightly and other times it will decrease. Pull down status panel, turn on smart saver, turn it off again and the problem goes away.
Help, please? Mine is a US model if that makes any difference on build 10.14.1.47.
Thank you very much in advance.
Did you download the used 10.14.1.47 manually from Asus website or was it an auto update from the device itself.
Sent from my New Asus Transformer Pad TF701T using Tapatalk HD
Manually from the website.
I kinda have the same problem, though on my tab it is only the auto brightness that sometimes will increase/decreased constantly. Disabling Smart Saving or auto brightness helps in my case. I only have the problem when i'm in a room where there's light but the room isn't totally bright, and the tablet is with its back to the light source.
Others can correct me if I'm wrong but the 10.14.1.47 isn't being pushed through the device itself. I'm finding most people are downloading it manually from Asus website. . My estimation, I think Asus is aware that the update has some issues, thus not force updating it through the device until they come out with the latest fix.
Sent from my New Asus Transformer Pad TF701T using Tapatalk HD
You might be right about the update. Although I was thinking more people should have this issue. Maybe they aren't rebooting their tablet often enough to notice it as once I enable/disable Smart Saver, the problem goes away until I reboot. That is a satisfactory work around, but I was hoping for confirmation from at least one other person seeing the same thing in terms of returning the device. Amazon has decent return terms, so I'll probably wait until the next update and see if that fixes it. Thanks.
I'm on .47 and I have the same issue as well. I also noticed that the brightness will increase 2-3 steps every time I bring up "settings". This is regardless of auto-brightness on/off, smart saving on/off, outdoor mode on/off.
Auto-brightness is useless: Usually it's much too dark, and the auto-setting is changing with strange behaviors.... it's kinda jumping up and down as other described...
Thanks, since others are experiencing it too, at least I'm hopeful that it will be fixed in a SW update.
Did someone contact the asus-hotline?

Same thing here, bought the unit in the US and also experiencing the same awkward behavior. This would actually go away when Auto Brightness is turned off.
I am also getting issues when docked. Sometimes after some time (maybe a couple of hours) as soon as I tilt the tablet to its normal position, I would find it completely off. Had to turn the device back on a couple of times now.
These are too many annoyances for such an expensive unit.
Hope they fix the Auto Brightness setting at least.

Mine is still the same after the 4.3 update. I can see whatever algorithm it is working. For example, switch to a dark screen, wait 2 seconds, watch it darken a little more once a second for the next three seconds. Then the reverse in switching to a mostly white screen/app.
The good news is the dock doesn't seem to disconnect anymore.
Just can't decide about this thing. I want to love it as much as I loved my TF101 but I just don't (yet?)

Absolutely. It's just really freaking annoying.
I have it right here in a bright office with fluorescent lights, which I would think would vastly marginalize the amount of light reflected from the display itself back into its ambient light sensor. Merely dropping down the notification column causes visible shifts darker (when coming from a light background) in steps, over several seconds. (and it's in the dock on the desk, so the device isn't moving at all)
So my argument is the algorithm used to determine the backlight of the screen puts to much weight on the white balance of the screen. It's distracting and annoying. And it would be one thing if this only happened on "Auto Brightness," which it does not.

Problems I have encountered with the Moto G 2014

1) Low memory issues. This is particularly annoying when it force closes or reloads chrome. This has occurred when uploading pictures on Amazon when listing a product, when chrome casting in the background, when listening to music and web browsing. Sometimes the app drawer also restarts... People who say 1gb ram is enough sound like a broken record. 1.5gb should be the minimum for android.
2) GPS ( device only mode) doesn't work. It will not detect my location so I have to use high accuracy mode which kills the battery. Not sure if this is a software bug or just a hardware issue but it's annoying.
3)Auto brightness sucks. It keeps the screen brightness far too low... And takes ages to kick in. Trying to use a third party app to manage this results in it force closing when your multi tasking because of the 1 gb ram causing the brightness app to go crazy.
4). HSPA+ speeds seem to be very low when turning off location, not sure if this is software or hardware related but I am lucky to get 3 mbps down.
Other the hand I am pleased by the camera, its far better than the moto x 2013. The speakers are decent, and the screen when controlled manually is very good, can't see any difference with the nexus 5. The battery gave me 6 hours SOT over a 10 hour period which was nice. The dual sim is useful for my illicit activities. The micro SD slot is the icing on the cake.
I am stuck whether to keep this or go back to my moto x 2013.

Today my Moto G started to show problems with the wifi (never had this issue while it was on KitKat). I noticed it was connected to my data plan and when I checked the notification bar, the wifi logo was greyed and had an exclamation mark. After reboot, the problem was fixed for a few minutes and then returned. Another reboot and lasted a little more.
It's the third time now, so I'll see how much it lasts.

I assume it's a refresh rate issue on the screen, lights are constantly flickering I got some cool super slow mo videos of lights on holiday, they are a constant red light but clearly not, I assume that's all you're seeing on the camera as well

Hi Dave. In your video that is screen refresh rate because of heavy music and lights i beleive.
But in my P20 Unit it is issue in camera. I mean even if im in my room with two three lights, it gets all black lines everytime and photos, videos taken are so bad.
It is ruining my moments and im disappointed.
I have tested s9+ and Iphone X under same environment but they both work fine and no black lines at all.

How can we change the refresh rate of camera. Im not sure we can do it on mobile.
its not about display refresh rate.
You can change between 60fps an not 60fps resolutions
Changing between this resolutions is the only change I have seen

I doubt this is a hardware issue because it's more related to the refresh rates of the lighting which happens to synch with the shuttertime of the camera. It causes visible banding across the display. It will happen with all cameras, even DSLR's if you match the shuttertime to the frequency of which the lights refresh.

Yes you are right. This is some hardware issue. But the things is this problem is not present on any Iphone and Samsung. I have tested many samsung phones and iphone x. They all handle lights pretty good but huawei fails at this.
Trust me photos and videos get ruined and you see black and white lines on the picture.
Its just annoying that such expensive phone can't handle lights flickering like cheap samsung phones and old iphones.
Just search Google pixel 2 screen flicker on youtube/google and you'll see what im talking about.

Tried it but doesnt work
No, you misunderstood my comment.
Usually this phenomena happens for the reasons i described. It happens on my $6000+ DSLR camera too and the only way to get around it is to change the shutter speed to a different one which does not synchronize with the refresh rates of the light sources. It's not a malfunctioning hardware, it's more like a limitation which can be worked around by either software hacks or shutter adjustments. Although changing the shutter speed might not work as expected with the type of electronic shutters we have in these mobile devices.
Just because you haven't seen the effect on the other devices you mentioned doesn't mean the issues don't exist there. This is a common issue on cameras with electronic shutters such as phone cameras, and even more so when you use auto settings under certain circumstances.

Hi. I have the exact same problem. Were u able to solve the problem?
It's the LED lights that is an issue. It flickers a lot faster than the human eye can see.. but the P20 will pick that up. To get around that, go to Pro and lower the ISO and increase the shutter. It works for me.. the longer the shutter, the more evened out the flickering becomes and it won't be an issue. The LG V20 has manual video and I was able to get around that, but P20 Pro doesn't have manual mode for video.

Question How to fix the proximity sensor problem?

My Mi 11 Ultra is acting wired from two weeks ago. The Display is getting automatically off without even I'm going near to Ear. To WhatsApp Audio messages also when start to listen the auto the screen is getting off. I tried maximum possible to clean the phones upper part but still same. Please anyone help me how to fix this issue.
Sorry for my Bad English.

Well, I have exactly the same problem, but only with WhatsApp, Viber works as it should. Once I tried rubbing the upper part of the display (where all the sensors are) and it seemed to work, albeit just for a while.
What other apps do you have problems with?
Probably like Xiaomi Mi 11- Mi11 Ultra doesn't have psychical proximity sensor, it has virtual proximity sensor made by Elliptic Labs, so some apps can be acting wired or Virtual Proximity sensor is not yet optimized for them.
Xiaomi Mi 11 does not use a physical (hardware) sensor for proximity, but an algorithm studied by Elliptic Labs which uses speakers and microphone.

Sadly it's a mess. It works so bad, most of my calls are with a screen on and sometimes it turns off when I don't want it to. It works worse than any phone I have ever used.
Same here, no fix and it's horrible... Makes me think if i ever going to buy Xiaomi again

I had same in early first xiaomi.eu stable releases, but after all I see improvements over time, it's not perfect but better than before. At least my screen is off most of the calls,

It's a huge duckup in a flagship phone. Sometime I wonder if Xiaomi has QA at all.
For example: open pro mode in the camera, change only the EV to -0.3. now change lens to the ultra wide. Basically you need to change the EV every time you change lens..it's silly.
