[Q] Question about tactile feel of the various backing materials - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've currently got a 2013 Moto X, and I'm pretty keen on upgrading to the new version, but I'm concerned that it's too big for my hands. I use the 2013 version very comfortably, and have found I can use a Galaxy S5 pretty well too since the backing is a bit grippy. Unfortunately the new Moto X doesn't have a return policy, so I'm loathe to pick up the phone without knowing it's something I can use.
My current developer edition (with the white polycarbonate backing) is very slick. I'd like something a bit grippier.
I'm considering the wood primarily, but does it have texture? Can you grip it OK? What about the leather? I'm very gentle on my phones, so I'm not that concerned about it wearing, but leather can be hit and miss as far as tactile feel.
Any other thoughts on this? Thanks

This section is about the Moto G 2014, not the Moto X, probably no one will be able to answer you that here.

Ah, very sorry. Thanks for the heads up.

I was never a huge fan of the Surface, though to be fair I did like it for one of my phones (don't remember which one). They fit nice and tight in the beginning but loosen up and start creaking over time. Some people also have complained that they scratch their phones. YMMV, obv. Right now I'm rocking the Griffin Reveal and can't recommend it enough.
I have the Griffin Reveal as well. Feels like there's just a lil bumper on the phone, doesn't add much bulk to it. But the clear back is already full of scratches!
Sent from my Moto X
Thanks for the info. Where's the best place to order the Reveal? Not too many retailers have it.

It's a nice case. I've always liked Seidio Surface cases but the Reveal is the case to have for the Moto X.
we need to bug seidio to make an OBEX for the moto x

The black soft touch back has good feel and decent grip. On a couple of other threads, owners have mentioned that the leather is a little slippery, but I've not handled it 1st hand.
The wood has a nice texture. I find that the wood is grippy enough, but the metal sides are a little slick and that seems to matter much more.

What does the plastic back cover like on the moto x 2014?

I was thinking about getting a Moto X 2014 and was wondering what the plastic back cover is like?
I do not want the leather since it quick gets used and not into wood so plastic is the default choice for me.
I could find any details as to the Moto X 2014 back plastic cover feels, looks like up close and is it sued like or is it a hard plastic feel like the 2013?
Did anyone order the back cover in plastic and how is it?
I have the black back and it has a soft touch coating. It has a mild rubbery feel too it almost. It's great.

Thanks Metalhead! Just what I wanted to know!
Do you find the phone quite slippery to hold?
Its nice to hold but it feels way to easy to drop. I was hoping the black back would have been a bit more grippy.

Exactly! I found it to be an ideal material for phone because it's very solid, not prone to scratches and far more durable than leather or wood.
And it's look good, not cheap. This is not plastic, like iPhone 3gs back but polycarbonate.

Thanks for seconding that it solid not cheap and well made. I thinking of going all "White" on the Moto X! Kind of had it with the all black models. LOL! I might be sorry and be clean it a lot but it suppose to be a trendy type phone anyways - fashion and all so I going go all out - fashion wise! Of course; when I order; I probably be conservative and go all black again! That the only two colors I know; so motomaker does not seem to change my mind any!

I went all black with mine, but I'm thinking about exchanging it for black leather with either green or blue accents. I'm kinda getting tired of all black phones too.
I went all black : because you cannot see sensors of the front side. White model looks ugly because of this.
Plastic is solid

Got mine today. White/white. Not slippery.
I'm coming from an S4, and this feels much more solid and permanent. Feels thicker, but of course I don't know that, because I can't take off the back. But it certainly does not feel cheap, compared to the S4. (Maybe not a fair comparison, as S4's back was made to come off, which I liked. So for me it's a trade off.)

Ballistic Nylon vs Kevlar beyond looks

I was looking at the reviews on the Droid turbo and I notice that there seems ti be a complete lack of the verizon logo on the Ballistic version as compaired to the kevlar one as well as having slightly diffrent dementions and 64gb version. So I was wondering if it is infact the same internals or if the ballistic one is the same as the Droid Maxx just with the verizon apps or if all three are exactly the same sans software and looks.. Do they all have the same radios is the kevlar more locked down ect..
They are all the same. Only difference are the ballistic nylon has option for 32gb or 64gb. These one don't have Verizon logos on them.
The bgm models are red or black but only 32gb.
I would like to hear some more opinions on this. I currently have the 32GB with black kevlar, but I am considering exchanging mine for the 64GB for the extra space.
For some reason just can't convince myself that I will like the ballistic nylon. All of the reviews seem to love it but I wouldn't mind hearing some more opinions from users here.
I love the nylon, best feeling phone I've owned in awhile.
Its sooooooo sexy.
The ballistic nylon wins hands down! The other looks for this phone feel and look cheap.
I love my 64gb Ballistic Nylon!!! Built like a tank but runs like a Lamborghini
BN, the only way to Turbo.
Thanks everyone for the responses. Really helped to ease my concerns lol. Going to go in tomorrow and exchange for the 64GB!
I'm running the ballistic nylon, but was set on the red just because I never had a red phone and I thought it looked great.
However the 64gb was the definite selling point and when I compared the two side by side just really liked the feel of the nylon better.
It's all preference though
I´ve got the ballistic nylon moto maxx (I´m in Brazil). For someone who came from the 1st generation moto x, the nylon feels very slippery, and since it´s a much bigger phone, I always feel like I could drop it. Other thn that, I´m very happy with the phone.
I ended up getting the black Kevlar. My concerns were with long term use of the BN that it may fray, or get dirt in it which would be difficult to get out. It felt great when I held it in the store but I liked the slightly rubberized feeling of the Kevlar and thought it may provide a better grip. I'm sure the BN has its advantages such as a better grip with wet or clammy hands. Just thought I'd offer a counterpoint though. The 64gb is a definite advantage with BN

I came to the Ballisic Nylon Turbo from a 2014 Moto X with Leather. Here's what I've decided on "grippiness" and feel:
The leather back of the Moto X feels, and looks AMAZING. I had the Cognac leather back, and it is slightly tacky (especially after adding a little leather conditioner). However, the sides of the phone are metal, and are quite slick. I like to hold the phone by its edges, and the leather rarely would touch my palm. I like to put my pinky on the bottom of the phone, and the metal rim there was also quite slick. The result is that the moto x never felt really solid in my hand.
The Ballistic nylon is slicker, less grippy, than the leather back. However, the sides of the phone have a band of rubber. This actually makes the phone grippier in my hand than my moto x was. The little rubber "chin" at the bottom of the phone is also better for my pinky to rest on than the metal band on the Moto X. The result is that in my hand, I feel like the Ballistic Nylon is actually easier to hold.
I'm not sure how that compares to the Kevlar backs, but I thought it might be an interesting comparison.

I went in to the store to see which one I would like - I guess I'm in the minority, but I absolutely hated the nylon. Felt cheap and not as uniform as the other which has a bit of a tacky back, which I like.
I had also never run over the 32gb on my G2 that I had previously so the storage didn't really matter to me.
That said, I love the Kevlar Glass back, feels great.

I have to agree with you. I had planned on exchanging mine today for the 64 GB version. Went into the store and played with the nylon version for a while. After having had the Kevlar version for over a week I just wasn't a fan of the way that the nylon model felt in my hand. Like you mentioned, I prefer the more uniform feel of the kevlar model, due to the back being all one piece. I had wanted the extra storage space but I managed to get by with my DNA that only had 16GB of storage for two years with out issue so I figure I can manage with twice the storage of that device.
To each his own I guess. I will be sticking with the 32GB black kevlar.

I have the red kevlar and I am somewhat concerned with the slipperiness of the phone. For whatever reason, I feel like the texture on the nylon would help with the grip on the phone.
I am getting a case for it anyway, so the slipperiness is a moot point once inside said holster of safety... but if I, for whatever reason, chose to not get a case, I would probably switch to the nylon.
It's really funny reading these posts. Not to be rude but it is all subjective. One thinks the one they have feels better than the other.
I for one like the nylon better and thought it have better grip than the bgm model.
In the end pick whatever one you like and I definitely think it is better to hold them in person before choosing.

According to what read, neither models have a satsfactory grip. I can assure you that coming from the original moto x, the nylon moto maxx is very slippery.
Ballistic Nylon is soooooo freekin' cool. Why would you even consider anything else? Also, if you want the 64GB version, you have to go BN.
I did not get the Nylon because I do not need the 64GB option and I was concerned over time the threads might loosen and fray and the nylon would also absorb oils and dirt and get grungy. My concerns may be misplaced but that was my prior reason for not getting the Nylon and secondary was I heard the nylon made it a little thicker. Also the back on the non-nylon model still felt like a great improvement over the cheap feel of my prior SIII.

Question to the owners: Is this phone slippery?

Hey mates,
I've read about 20 reviews, saw countless videos and such. Everyone said "it is plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap".
Not a single person talked about how it feels in the hand, if it has a "grip" or slides through too easily.
So, it is plastic with fiber-glass or carbon woven in, fine. How does it feel compared to:
- the wonderful soft touch back of the Nexus 5 or Moto X (1st gen.)
- a slippery glass back of any genuine phone
- the cheap plastic of a Samsung S3
Maybe a "slip scale" rating of 1 (not slippery) to 10 (very!) is highly appreciated.
Thanks
I'd say slip scale of 5/6 its not going to slide out of your hand but its certainly not glued to it either.
A few things.
From surface feel
It's not as slippery as the Galaxy S7 or S8. (owned most recently)
It's is not cheap feeling like a S3 (owned)
It is more slippery than the Nexus 5 and Moto X (owned both).
Of note is that this phone weighs 8% more than a nexus 5 (and 90% as much as a S8). This means it feels more substantial in the hand. That seems like it could make it easier to carry.

That's exactly what I wanted to have answered, thank you very much!
Now I'm still undecided haha but that's my problem for sure.
More slippery than a S5, I'd say 4.
