Hey guys, just thought I'd poll and ask some questions?
So if looking for the best possible battery life (over peformance) which is recommended,
true official stock samsung ROM? or stock ROM e.g. Adrenaline ROM etc
I've tried Stocklite, Adrenaline and am currently using Thunderbolt. However my battery life never goes over a day, even with Juice Defender Ultimate and SetCPU profiles.
Any one else have any experiences with good roms? Battery calbiration tips? charging tips anything?
Thanks

1.The battery life depends more upon your baseband rather than the roms.
Ofcourse the roms do make a difference!
Eg. Earlier i was using Stocklite v7.1 on DDKQ8, and it used to last a day, now on XWKTM it lasts more than that.
2.The battery calliberation is said to be a myth as an official google android developer stated that it does not affect the battery in anyway. (Tried it personally too, no change in battery life!)
3.Underclock when you are not using heavy apps on your phone.
4.The way you use your phone makes a great difference, switch off the bluetooth, gps, data, wifi when not needed! Reduce the brightness, it saves the battery!
Hope all this would help you!
I have a new T-Mobile Note 4 (that I'm using on AT&T) and the phone is quite fast, but I enjoy tweaking and am planning to root the phone for Xposed and a few other things, so I was also thinking about flashing a new ROM.
I also use GearVR so I need a compatible (TouchWiz?) ROM and was thinking about FireKat.
Does it really make that big of a difference?
I'm more concerned about performance than battery life, but of course battery life is important too.
Yes, it makes a huge difference.
To go into a bit more detail for ya, yes they do help. Most of the custom roms have been de-bloated and tweaked for "power users" for lack of a better term. They have been adjusted to allow better usability and eliminate some of the useless features. Some devs (not all, be sure to do your research and read the boards) but extra effort into making their roms perform better and allow customization. Be warned though, from my experience, with more customizations and tweaks to appearance you will take a hit to performance.
Thanks very much for the help.
It seems like a lot of ROMs are tweaked for battery life and I often wonder if the performance isn't that good as a result.

FireKat is tweaked for both performance and battery life. My phone is 10 times faster than stock with FireKat V9 and the good battery life is a nice side effect. Make sure your follow the instructions in the first and second posts for maximum performance/battery life.
Maybe everyone can submit performance benchmarks here.
how about this, I used Nova Launcher when im not rooted but when I am rooted (like now running firekat) im on TW all the way.
Don't go by benchmarks, go by feel. Like someone said above read through the different Dev posts and in most, people have done what your talking about and posted numbers. To the original poster, FireKat is awesome. Mega does an incredible job and its definitely worth trying his efforts if you don't mind flashing. The speed difference as well as battery performance is nothing short of incredible on this device. I've tried many different ROMs and always come back to this one.
Of course your experience may vary, but that's what's so awesome is the ability to try a different ROM. Like you, I have a TMobile Note 4 on AT&T. Fortunately for us there are many talented devs for this phone which gives us many options. Give them a try and see for yourself, and trust me, you won't be disappointed.
Just do yourself a favor and don't go by benchmark numbers, and go by what you feel is the fastest and smoothest. Numbers are artificial and change so often that it's much better in my opinion to feel for yourself.
Good luck and enjoy the device man, it's awesome.
I am a power user. I have a gear vr. None of the custom ROMs support vr. I have a backup nandroid of stock ROM, whenever I want to use vr, I nandrood back to it. Daily driver is cm12.
This is my benchmark score anyway.

Touch above 50k using the latest cm12 build.
This is the smoothest running ROM I've used.
Most stable is firekat for sure.
Ugh. Gear VR doesn't work on FireKat?
I've been reading the thread and it says that it would work with a custom kernel. Has anybody tried that?
yes, it's my favorite ROM so far.

I haven't had connectivity issues like some may be experiencing.

If you want to speed up the appearance of your phone...make it snappier....go into Developer settings and reduce all animations to 0.5 or turn them off completely. It makes a big difference.
Firekat + AEL kernal = ROM bliss with VR function.

Really ten times? Not even close to twice as fast, maybe half as fast. While Firekat and Dynamic Rom are faster than stock touchwiz......Slim roms or Cyanogenmod are the only thing that REALLY speed up the phone. Touchwiz will always be touchwiz
It's more of a speed upgrade than that. Mega has been tweaking the speed for 9 versions. He's got skills.
Do any of the ROMs speed up gaming at all?
For example, I also have an iPhone 6 Plus and several games are silky smooth on it (Galaxy On Fire 2 HD, Terraria, Shadowgun), but on the Note 4 the performance is much lower. It's not horrible, but it's nowhere near as smooth as iOS. (note: this isn't meant to disrespect Android or the Note 4, but I'm honestly wondering about the difference because I have both phones and compare them side-by-side)
I think what you may really be looking for is a custom kernel. A lot of them are in original android development. I can link you to others.
I'm testing hyperdrive rom today on this phone, however and just downloaded those games. Very zippy.

We'll pretend you didn't just admit you have an iPhone.
As simple as the name states.
Just looking for which rom is stable, fast, and has long battery life.
By battey life, I mean SOT, not overall usage, since I'm using the phone mainly for Vainglory (Droid Turbo is my main driver, with a Note2 & M7 as extras for whatever I need them for (Currently use M7 for slickdeals & backup phone since I'm on T-Mobile, and the Note 2 was my main Vainglory phone, but also use it for Kik & 2nd Facebook, but would like to have the M8 be my Vainglory phone as it is a bit faster, and I'm too lazy to root the Note and install a custom rom on it. I hate Samsung. lol)
So yeah, I need to know which rom is easy on the battery enough for me to get a few hours of SOT with Vainglory

The battery life will be about the same on every Rom when you are pushing its cpus to the max, which is what Vainglory does. It's a great game, and all but it is a battery hog no matter the Rom you use. Just find a Rom you're comfortable with and use that! hope that helps you!
Guys,
Just received my tablet and I am thinking about immediately swapping the stock ROM for a custom ROM but I am wondering what is the battery life comparison. I have seen benchmark comparisons which look ok (i..e slightly faster via custom ROM) but I have not seem battery life comparisons.
Specifically, because this is more a casual use tablet, I am more interested is how long the device will last when its not used, rather than on-screen time with stock versus custom, but any advise as to what is the best option. So, has anyone done battery comparisons with the various ROM's available?
Thanks
Jerome

Hey Jerome! I'm running slim ROM and the battery is amazing! It's way better than stock because all of the amzon crap is gone so its not draining the battery.
I'm a casual user on this too and only really use it in the evenings for light web browsing and a few games. The battery easily lasts me three or four days before I have to plug it again.
When the screens off and its in idle it only drains about 1% every five hours! I thought it was broken at first because I'm so used to my phones battery draining.
I don't use any power saver apps or anything. I originally had greenify, wakelock detector and better battery stats ready in case of drainage when the screen was off but deleted all of them as they were uneeded!
I'd def go custom rom! Really recommend slimrom its great!
Cm12 is great too and the battery was good on that, its just better for me on slim!
Sorry if this was a well long answer!
Hello, what is for you the best kernel/governor to get smooth and responsive experience with the best battery life ? Thanks.
Im on jdc team aosp rom and the battery life plus performance is excellent on the stock kernel settings. You can try bb kernel for this rom too, which has performance benefits and maybe minor degrade in battery life, not noticeable to most users. Ill suggest you use stock kernel on this rom. Note: im also using google play services doze and unified hosts adblock magisk modules. For good battery life, download the app called app opd from play store and from there restrict background activity permission for apps you dint want running in the background and dont want notifications from. Also restrict keep awake permissions.
Ive tried tweaking kernel settings in maby ways in many roms and many kernels. It never gives any better battery life, rather affects performance badly. Dude you bought a snapdragon 820 phone. Dont worry so much about battery and enjoy your life. Use my suggestions in first paragraph and youll be fine.
