Possible reasons:
1. Samsung figured that MOST people don't take advantage of the USB 3.0 transfer speeds.
2. It requires extra hardware = needing to stuff more stuff into the phone.
3. Higher production cost.
4. Some rumor that the USB 3.0 caused charging issues? (Complete joke, because it worked perfect for me.)
Please add on to the list if you have more info...
Personally I wish they had kept the USB 3.0 as I'm one of those who actually took advantage of it. At least they somewhat off set it with the 50% charge in 30 minutes.
Is it just me or does the USB 3.0 just add that extra premium feel? Thicker cable, faster transfer speeds...just more beefy looking with the performance to back it up.
I despise connecting a phone to pc. with cords and usb connecting, Entire process seems tedious and sloppy. On the rare occasions i do connect, i usually try to capitalize on opportunity to get a quick charge in the process.
Maybe they just had a space issue on the board.
Whatever the reason I thoroughly dislike having to buy new usb cables, and otg cables for my travel dac and usb drives.
And the data transfer speed will suffer, when transferring ROMs downloaded on a PC first.
I think so too.

I would lean towards cost savings, since Note 4 is actually little bit bigger than Note3 and it's not like they made it waterproof or something, to fill up the extra space (Galaxy S5 has USB3 BTW). I'm disappointed, even if I was never going to use it, cutting features on the flagship device is not the way I would like Samsung to go, what else are they going to cut in the next model? This supposed to be top of the line model filled with newest tech, if they keep on doing it I may as well buy some cheap chinese knock off, it will also have all the basic features, most people use. Actually I was hoping they'll actually fix that USB 3, so it's auto detecting not getting rid of it, very disappointed, almost as much as the phone not being waterproof.
I can see your point, because as an USB 3.0 user, not being able to transfer Gigs at a time in a few seconds is going to be greatly missed. In theory I think they could have just kept it without sacrificing anything else really. Heck, it's already proven to be true for the Note 3. So that's out of the question.
I'm not worried about Samsung cutting things in the future. They may learn from this misfit and hopefully our slaps will reach them to where they won't do something like this again LOL.
All in all... I am 90% satisfied with the Note 4. The USB 3.0 really weight 10% for me because I use it on a daily basis.

Serious question here. I have an S5 and when I copy files with the USB 3 cable to my computer with a USB 3 port, I see no noticible difference between it and USB 2. Does anyone actually notice anything?
I would expect the note 5 to be back to usb 3 (3.1 actually) and use usb type c

You are right!
There is no difference at all, I tested it using a stop watch with a file of
two gigabytes and had the same results in speed with usb 2.0 or 3.0.
Also I really dislike the extra wide 3.0 connector which usb 3.0 requires.

I'm not sure if they fix it in GS5, but on Note 3 USB3 wasn't autodetecting, you had to go to settings and manually switch to USB 3 mode, really stupid way, since some tablets had it autodetecting a while ago and most people won't even know about it. Of course I'm assuming you're using USB3 port on your computer. Also how fast is your SD card? Phone memory is fastest. Charging from computer port is faster on USB3 also, I tested it long time ago I think it was almost twice as fast.
Thanks for clearing this up. I almost fell to the floor laughing of the thought of some thinking that USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 are of the same LOL.
Although a little cumbersome, all you have to do is flip the switch. Easy. Done deal.

Nope...no setting. And I don't use SD cards.
If they could implement it properly then I'd want it more but it was a half-ass implementation on the previous phones so I don't really miss it.
I don't care why they did it I'm just pissed that I got a bunch of cables I can't use now. When I switch devices my whole family switches to that device so now I have tons of USB 3 cables around the house and now we can't use them. At the very least I hope they will release the wireless charging back for us that have been taking advantage of it.
Im guessing the exclusion of USB3 had something to do with the fast charge system. Maybe heat, price who knows. The Note 4 has the option to use 9V at 1.6amps

Don't worry about the usb 3 0 cables, they are not proprietary and they are and
will be perfectly usable with any of the external usb 3.0 portable hard drives.
No worries. Just save them for the Note 5 and beyond. :good:

You know, you're right. This is in theory the best reason in my books. Maybe the fast charge system took the place of the USB 3.0 hardware. Only one or the other type of thing. But can we have both the icing and the cake? Maybe next time...
In reality though, although I am a heavy USB 3.0 user, most people would take the fast charge over the USB 3.0 any day. I know I know....it is what it is until we can get both.

So my otherwise adorable 1 year old somehow got his hands on my Captivate this weekend. When we finally caught him, he was chewing and slobbering on it pretty much right where the USB port is. After getting the phone back out of his grubby little hands, my wife and I took it completely apart and have had the whole works soaking in rice for a day or so.
When I put it back together, it booted just fine, and everything seems to be in working order. Except...when I plug a cable into the USB port, it doesn't charge, and it doesn't connect to my computer for storage mounting/flashing. This would be a bit of a problem.
I've checked for obstructions in the port itself and there don't seem to be any. I can get by for now without charging because my wife and I have the same phone (so we can periodically swap batteries...), but she's leaving town for two weeks at the end of this week. I really don't want to have to buy a new phone...so any ideas on fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

Once the USB port is gone its gone, you would need to get an external wall charger for it and a wifi file browser.
there might be some moister in it yet, but generally the captivates had issues with the USB port just flaking out like that. Its a common problem for this phone, and also has happened to mine.
Or you can just pay ~35$ to get it fixed, look in my sig. They are good!

Hmm...I didn't even realize that was an option. I'll be looking into that. Thanks!
They fixed mine and it works great. I would also order a new cable from them for like 7 bucks. It is all well worth it!
interesting, didnt know about that one either
Update:
It's apparently not *quite* as dead as I thought. It's still not recognizing my computer or telling me that it's charging...but apparently it is actually charging my battery. I plugged it into my computer just to see and left it. It never said that the phone is charging, but when I came back a few minutes later the battery meter had gone up, and it's still doing that fairly consistently.
That's at least good news for now. Even if the USB transfer is dead, I'm still OK as long as I can charge. As long as I don't have to use download mode...
That sounds like a bad cable, just buy one of those first, cheaper and easier to check!

It's nothing to do with the cable. We have four USB cables and two different car chargers. It's the same thing with all of them, and they all work perfectly on my wife's phone.

My first Captivate had a USB port go bad.. I tried 10 different cables and decided for some reason it was a ROM issue and got into download mode.. well let's just say I was buying another Captivate the next day.. lol
I did resurrect it by buying a Captivate with a broken screen on Ebay cheap. Combined the two and it's actually a later production and the GPS works good compared to hardly at all before. M yold screen and new guts.. Now I have a spare phone to try new Roms on without messing up my daily driver.. (Dark Knight 4 atm)
I see broke screen Captivates for $40-80 on Ebay regularly..
My wife also has a captivate with a dead USB port. So I went on amazon and searched for captivate batteries and external charger and found a package that came with 2 extended life batteries and the wall charger that charges one separatly from the phone while you use the other in the phine . Its made by Laza wireless and both batteries and charger was 15.99 and shipped free. Got it in two days and works great and was a whole lot cheaper than a phone.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but, I have had the same problem for months also caused by a toddler sucking on the phone and cables. I swap batteries daily. stock/1800/2430 mah. I am curious if anyone knows of a wireless charging option. I know my wii batteries are inductive and it is just the new battery and charger on a stock remote. is there an inductive charger and battery available for cappy? is wireless charging dangerous to the phone if it wasnt designed with it in mind? for that matter is anything available for anyother phones besides the lumia 920 and maybe nexus I think?
cheapest, best option is to get the USB port repaired by mobiletechvideos.com, imho.
I know of no induction solution for captivate that works without a good usb port.
I figured and also thought the Cappy wouldn't be a device supported by a new battery developer when there is so many newer ones out.
Thx

I was one of those that ordered the magnetic pogo charger when it first came on sale and I am still waiting to see if I will get my cable.
So for those who are looking for something that could boost charging time I came across this while following the CES convention bloggers. It looks semi promising. It claims it boosts the amp of any USB port as well as wall charger by using this tiny adapter. Here's the official post about it take a look at it let me know what you guys think.
http://m.cnet.com/news/chargedr-lets-you-charge-your-tablet-from-a-laptop-usb-port/57563162?ds=1
From my understanding its our tablet that is preventing more draw from the usb cable not the output of the wall charger.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
I'm thinking they purposely slow the recharge to preserve the life of the battery, as this tablet is really designed as a template for the next gen tablets. I'm assuming that this tablet will be in the hands of many devs and constantly being charged and recharged more so than an average consumer device.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
That product looks interesting, but I wonder how safe it is. If it's making the USB port from the source actually draw more power, couldn't that cause issues and even trip some voltage-protection stuff on certain motherboards on computers?
It might trip the USB controllers when it draws too much (in modern computers this wont be permanent damage). This is stupid though, there's a reason the tablet manufacturers limit the current draw when it's connected to a computer's USB port.

Yes there is a reason so consumers gets aggravated. And smashing the device and than order a new one lol
Hi I am looking for a case that will plug into the microusb and provide an alternate port. The port being the weakness on every mobile device by plugging/unplugging all the time. Ive lost more than 1 phone this way. i just want to preserve the life of my Nexus. I dont mind if it increases the length overall. Has anyone heard of such a thing?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Here is how I solved it, I have:
1. Asus Nexus 7 Dock
2. Sena Ultraslim pouch
So if I need to charge, it easy to remove the tablet from it, as for transferring files, I use wifi or Google Drive, simple as that.
Maybe I'm lucky, I've never broken a charging socket on a phone....but...the idea of a socket extension on a case is a great one. I've had to 'mod' a few charger plugs to get them to fit into the space left by case manufacturers around the socket.

do you mean something like the battery pack cases for phones cause I have never seen one for any tablet. You could get an otg cable and mod a case to hold it in place to do what you want I believe.

Yeah I've thought about doing that but was hoping for something more professional. Also I use a $35 seido case (already broke 2 N7's so I need the heavy case), would have to buy a second one to extend it to make the mod, with a good chance of doing a bad job of it and wasting $70.

I still don't get it, according to Wikipedia, micro USB port, can handle like 10000 cycles of connect/disconnect, and will be fine..so how do you destroy them?
quote:
"The newer Micro-USB receptacles are designed for up to 10,000 cycles of insertion and removal between the receptacle and plug, compared to 1,500 for the standard USB and 5,000 for the Mini-USB receptacle. This is accomplished by adding a locking device and by moving the leaf-spring connector from the jack to the plug, so that the most-stressed part is on the cable side of the connection. This change was made so that the connector on the less expensive cable would bear the most wear instead of the more expensive micro-USB device"

My HTC Thunderbolt disagrees. Ive been having to swap the battery 3 times a day for the past year, using external chargers. For a while I could still connect to PC with a usb cable, not to charge but for file transfers, but now I can't do that either.
...
Just bought one of these and plan to test it out to see if I can get 3A charging. Confirmed with the manufacturer that it does in fact support 3A from the type-C port, but only 1.5A from the standard type-A port included. I will report back once tested.

Yeah - might be tough tp make any sort of external peripheral that might hook up to SATA or something that can handle the same power requirements for charging. I think these things have their own power cable internally, just like a harddrive or DVD.
Well - I've tested this thing fairly well now and can report it does pretty great. I can get a full charge from around 10-15% in about an hour and it reports as delivering a true 3A using the Current Monitor app. Still maybe not quite as good as the OEM charger, but as close as anything I have tried so far.

I had this with my pixel. Take a really thin pin and clean around the port. You will be surprised at the compacted lint that comes out. My cable fit super tight after that.
The cable fits tight because the cable don't fall off, I could even hang up my phone without it falling off. The only thing is this wiggle that shows in the video that I made...

Do they allow fast charging? I've been looking at the magnetic charging cables for a while now, but they always get mixed reviews, especially when it come to fast charging.
If these fast charge and are reliable for data transfer, then I'll pick up a three pack. Probably still wouldn't trust them for flashing firmware through ODIN.

As for Flashing a ROM, I would Always choose a Direct connection rather than Magnetic. I wouldn't want ANY chance of a Cable Interruption Ever if the Cable was to get bumped.

1. You Have to Choose the 7th Generation Cables in order to Fast Charge.
2. Fast Charge will depend also on the Wall Charger. If it's a QC3 type of Wall Charger, then you should get Fast Charging without any Problems at all.
3. As for the Magnet being weak, maybe you just got a bad one.
4. As for the Magnet sticking out of the Phone, I and Most All people that I talk with and have gotten the Cables use a Rugged case like I do, so it don't stick out visibly.
