There's no root for 2013 X on 4.4.4 either. I believe jcase said he may have a temp root possibility but was holding off packaging it due to the upcoming L release and not wanting to burn it. Apologies to him if I 'misremembered' his exact wording.

This sucks. Now I want to return the Moto X. Ill keep my LG G3 until a root comes out.

crap...the other issue with not having root is the inability to tether with VZW's unlimited data plan

This - I am hoping foxfi or someone else comes through here. Lollipop is still young, here's to hoping someone breaks down the wall!

[Q] Verizon vs. AT&T Rooting Methods

I've been poking around the forums a bit and noticed that some work is being done for creating a root method on the at&t Moto x (as well as a sizeable bounty being offered)... my question is, will the Verizon Moto x be rootable by the same method?
It seems that the software would be relatively similar, so I was assuming yes, but I'm not sure...

Yes it will be rootable using this method. If you want, you're free to test since I need a guinea pig anyway
I would like to be a guinea pig but I can't do anything too risky because I really can't afford another phone
Sent from my Nexus 7
There's no risk involved...its not a bootloader unlock, just a root.

I will be getting the dev edition Moto X when it is released but I currently have a Droid Mini if you think your method will work for the Mini/Maxx/Ultra I'm willing to help you out if you're interested.

Root AT&T Moto X on 4.4.2?

I bought a used AT&T Moto X and it's on 4.4.2. Is it possible to root this (maybe through downgrading first), or do I need one of the unlocked versions of the phone?

unless an exploit comes out in the future (but i think everybody is pessimistic about this), the locked versions can't downgrade and can't root 4.4.2.
so you need either an unlocked version, or a locked version pre-4.4.2
And no....don't downgrade. You could easily brick your phone.
Whoa whoa
I just purchased a moto x from Google, for ATT.
I can't root???? Woowwwwwwwww..........

Yup. Should have read up first.
That said....return it now while you still can, and get a dev edition or another carrier that can be sim unlocked and work on at&t if that's who you're with.

Oh, so you definitely got the at&t model?? On a plan, or paid up front???
If on a plan, you could try to sell it anyway, and put that towards dev edition.....or live without root...or return it.

Ah good idea... selling it new.
Actually I'm not sure I need root. I only rooted my S3 to get rid of touchwiz, but this stock android might be ok. Only app I use that needs root is file manager and drivedroid. And I want to disable the camera shutter sounds
I'd like to put CM11 on there but looks like motox isn't well supported by CM anyway.

The Moto x definitely doesn't need to be rooted, but you may regret it later if you can't.
Good luck with whatever you do.
Thanks for all the helpful replies.
I wasn't planning on rooting this phone either, but then I came across Gravity Box. Sell the phone new and get an unlocked one.

No one is really in the market for a moto x unless you sell it for dirt cheap. You don't really need to root this device it's great without but even better with root. You can disable the camera shutter sound from the camera menu. Es file explorer is a great alternative? But if you want return it and get the T-Mobile version its unlocked. This phone has been really great.
MOTO X
Why are all pessimistic that manage to get root on a closed bootloader version from AT & T?
Why do these companies do not sell at least an opportunity to get open bootloader? What do they lose?
I miss perekllyuchatelya regimes in 2G, 3G, and other other joys ...
I bought my Moto X directly from Motorola (not subsidized from AT&T) for use with AT&T. I did not opt for the slightly costlier DEV model, so is this thread telling me my personal property cannot ever be unlocked to be used somewhere else?

Pretty much...
Don't confuse bootloader unlock with SIM-Unlock though.
You can pay a small fee and get your AT&T X unlocked to use on other GSM carriers....AT&T also might provide you with the code if you meet certain criteria. Bootloader unlock is another story. AT&T forbids Motorola from giving out unlock codes for their branded phones. Currently the ONLY possibility for unlocking the bootloader on an AT&T X is through the China Middleman.
Apologizes if any (or all) of this is redundant.

Thanks, I pretty much figured in this day and age that the SIM could be unlocked or I'd have bought the unlocked one to start with. What bothers me most is I do not use/abuse root on any of the devices I own and am only interested in doing so on my X to run the Titanium Backup app I purchased to run on my older phone. I guess I knew back then the app needed root to run but since that used to never be an issue due to the collective experience I have at my fingertips here at XDA-Developers.com. it never dawned on my that a day would come where root would be taken away from me never to be returned.

OK I really hope it comes with 4.4 or lower so I can root. I have one currently with 4.4.2 and can't do anything, so I'm getting a replacement because of bluetooth issues
Just got mine today and it came w/ 4.4.2. Guess I'm waiting it out for a root method.

I hope mine isn't 4.4.2. The moto customer service person I talked to said they should ship with 4.4. Fingers are definitely crossed here
Honestly this is the first phone I have a need to mod. I miss a couple root apps but other than that the phone is damn good stock

are you talking about a new phone or warranty replacement?
If new, and root is such a concern that you need to be asking what rom comes on the phone, I would suggest purchasing a Dev Edition instead. Yes it might cost more, but you'll be able to root & disable write protection no matter what. And if the color scheme bothers you, get a case or dbrand skin.
If warranty replacement, there is not much you can do. just wait and see when yours gets there.
My AT&T Moto X shipped to me a couple weeks ago with 4.2 JB on it. I had to do like 4 updates.
I received a VZW MotoMaker this morning pre-loaded with 4.2.2.

Android L?

As question says:
Wil there be an - official- update to Android 5 for our beloved Moto X (in my case unlocked ATT)?
Typically, we should get the update right after the moto x+1 gets it
Sent from my Moto X
Moto has said the E will get it. Our phone us not even a year old yet and they have also promised major updates for 2 years.
As I recall, 18 months of official update support is the (official? empirical?) Android way of thinking, isn't it?
Motorola Germany posted on their Facebook page that Moto X and Moto G will both receive the "Android 5". Actually the Moto X is very well capable of receiving it.
I also plan to port the Stock AOSP to this device and the Moto G with my old team.
Anyone plan to port Android L from the Nexus 5? Since that is the only way will we get it for now

They won't be releasing source code til after it officially comes out....so that's not gonna happen.
And no root.

[Q] Looking for a VZW root method

I understand that you can root the unlocked version because you have to unlock the bootloader. Anyone have a root method for the VZW moto X? Even a safestap method? Thanks.
I was looking for info on this too. I tried searching around for a irc channel for development, but haven't found it yet. If it exists, might be too early yet.
I'm crossing my fingers someone finds a way to root it.
Trust me, if there was one, you'd know it. The thread would be stickied and 1000 posts deep.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
We can only hope at this point.. or maybe we will see a bounty thread pop up
I'd be willing to donate to a bounty for obtaining root on Verizon - if someone sets it up. (have no clue how to do it)
Me too, I'd donate $50 to the effort, if someone at it up.
I'd donate for a bounty, as well.
Just stating my support.

I believe that "Sunshine" is working on it. http://theroot.ninja
No need for a bounty at this point, just wait and pay the $25 once it's done.

Have you heard of anyone successfully unlocking a 2014 Moto X with Sunshine? From their site, it seems they're only claiming it will work on 4.4.3 or earlier Moto Xs, so presumably 2013 models.

Yeah, well the 2014 models came with 444 out of the box. I'm currently running ART, and am too lazy to switch back to dalvik just to try Sunshine, but from what you and the devs there are saying, it sounds like it wouldn't matter anyway.
I tried Sunshine on mine and it didn't work.
Sunshine does not work ATM, it is a work in progress. 4.4.4 is an issue, however with 5.0 on the way new exploits are always possible...

Let's hope so. I've never had an un-rooted phone for more than a day or two, and I keep running into things I can't do. This is what iPhone owners must feel like all the time.
I paid to unlock my 32gb droid maxx. I hope we can do the same with droid turbo with sunshine method. Hopefully it will happen easily since it's so closely related to the moto X 2nd Gen.
