If you just want to root your device you can unlock your bootloader with htc_dev's way. After that you can flash a recovery for your device and you flash a Superuser/SuperSU zip to root your official rom or you could also change your rom with a custom one.
** If you just unlock your bootloader with htc_dev unlock you will be an S-ON (Security ON) user. One of the disadvantages you are going to deal with, every time you want to change your rom from recovery will be to flash your kernel manualy from your bootloader. When you are in the hboot and you have connected your phone to PC you should be able to see a "fastboot usb".Then you have to extract the kernel (boot.img) (from the rom you are going to flash with your recovery) into the folder you have fastboot and you use the command fastboot flash boot boot.img to flash the kernel into your device. **
But if you realy want to unlock your device and you remove all the restrictions from it you have to (radio) S-OFF it.After you S-OFF your device you won't have to flash manually the kernels for the custom roms you are installing on it by using the fastboot flash command.
To make S-OFF posible you have to be at least rooted with htc_dev's way or to have a temproot so you be able to make the S-OFF procedure.
A very useful guide for S-OFF is this:
Runnymede S-OFF
You can also check this out:
http://unlimited.io/runnymede.htm
They are a plenty of recoveries you can choose.I would suggest you to use a 4EXT recovery (because it has smartflash option/for S-ON users) but I couldn't find an .img for Sensation XL.(If you root your phone somehow you can install a 4EXT .apk and you see if there is one for your phone.)
An other very good choice would be a CWM recovery. You can find and download the latest .img for Sensation XL from here.
A third nice choice (that I have never use) is a TWRP recovery. You can download the latest .img from here.
** After you download the recovery of your choice you have to put it in the same folder as the fastboot is and you run the command fastboot flash recovery {your recovery}.img.(The proccedure is similar as for the kernel flashing). **
** If you want to root your official rom you can download the latest (stable) SuperSU flashble zip from here and you flash it from your recovery. **

If you like we could help you further with the procedure. You have just to copy-paste the content that fastboot getvar all command prints (except your imei and serialno numbers).

[GUIDE] How to flash custom roms onto hboot 1.16 to 2.00.

Firstly, you will have to install your phone's drivers from htc sync, after thats done, uninstall it.
Secondly, go to htcdev.com and do the bootloader unlock process. Its easy to do so you might not bump into any issues.
Thirdly, during the process, you will have the android folder containing fastboot.exe. (Best put at c:\ drive)
Next, get clockworkmod recovery at clockworkmod.com (Find the one for your incredible s).
Now boot your phone into bootloader and select fastboot, and then connect into your pc. Open the cmd and type:
cd c:\android
fastboot flash recovery <path to img file>\recovery.img
(might wanna change the name of the img file for shorter typing).
Now grab a custom rom (like nik's trinity rom), put into the root of your sdcard and boot into recovery. Select install zip to sdcard, choose zip from sdcard and select the rom. (High chance for not having problems to do a full wipe and clear dalvik cache. Do a backup of your current rom via recovery at backup and restore > backup).
Now reboot back to bootloader and select fastboot. Get the rom that you downloaded earlier on, unzip and grab the boot.img file.
Connect phone to pc, open cmd and type:
fastboot flash boot <path to img file>\boot.img
And now you're good to go ^^
P.S. Clear dalvik cache again after finishing the flashing process. About root access, every custom roms will have superuser, so no worries.
Thanks to Lynt for this amazing guide. So I've created a straight forward version of it.

Sensation XL instal Ruu.exe

Hi guys,
I'm new to the android world. I just got a HTC Sensation XL from a friend who says it doesn't work right anymore after he dropped it on the floor. So now I try to repair the thing, because I could keep it.
The problem ohone stuck on HTC Logo and won't boot. It's possible to get it in bootloader and it looks like this:
*LOCKED*
S-ON
HBoot: 1.25.0004
I dont get a connection to the PC, but after first time plug-in it installed the drivers.
So now my question is how can I get an new Ruu on this phone. What are the different possiblities.
Till now I downloaded this to versions:
2.31.401.2_Europe
1.05.401.4_Europe.
don't know which to use. Installed HTCSnyc to but it didn't find the phone.
So hope u guys will help me out
Thanks
Well I just tried 1.05.401.4but it didnt work. My CID is HTC_Y13.
Now downloading 2.31.401.2...
The 1.05 is for Gingerbread and the 2.31 is for ICS with sense 3.6. If you just want it stock and you are downloading 2.31.40.2 for europe then it should work. If it is not working, then take the long way.
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Flash a recovery
3. Root
4. S-off
Now after all this go run the ruu file and it should work.
Remeber after you have installed htc sync and you are going to try flash recovery or something , uninstall htc sync again.
Also a reminder , you can do the most of it via my tool, just not the unlock bootloader, that is still from htcdev.com but the tool will give you the code that is needed to copy into htcdev.com

Hey I don't get it. I want to try the "simple" way first. But what do I have to do? I uninstalled HTCSync now and unzipped zhe 2.31.401.2_Europe and now? How can i start this on my HTC Sensation XL? The phone doesn't get a connection with the computer. Should I put the phone in bootloader mode an then got to recovery ?
Sorry for this silly questions, I normally use an other OS instead of anroid. Maybe you can give me a link with a step by step intrduction or you can describe a little bit what I have to do.
Greetz
You will need to go and download it like an .exe file
The one you are missing for europe ICS is here : Download and boot phone normal and run the .exe file
if that link does not working then here and press the white button and this text : 下载
Hey thanks for the quick answer the problem is the phone stuck on HTC Logo and doesn't boot the symstem. Is there a possiblity to get a new Ruu version on it maybe with the bootloader? BEcasue bootlader starts and windows detects the phone.
then you either need to send it in or do it your self. Just unlock the bootloader and flash recovery, flash a rooted rom, boot it up and root it then s.off it and again from fully booted start the ruu file
Hmm ok than I have to do that, but do u have an step by step description what to do first, with what files?
Thanks for your help
go to the thread where you find my tool. runnymede AIO tool , in my signature
So it's me again.
I have now a cutsom ROM on my phone this one "Total_Senseless_SXL-v4.1.1"
My bootloader is unlocked and S-ON is still avaiable. How can I get now to a stock rom?
What do I have to use to relock my bootloader? After relocking I can install this ROM's?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791345
Or don't I have to relock it with the posted version of the thread? And I can simply "install" it like a custom rom?
Greetz
First i will like to ask you, what did not work with my tool ?
Next is try go to recovery and then mount sd card for pc.
Download my sd card fix from my signature and put it on the sd card and flash it. Then the sd card issue shold be gone
---------- Post added at 07:50 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:48 AM ----------
If it is from recovery that the sd card fails in then you have not installed a proper working recovery. You should be able to boot the phone up and then enable Debugging in settings on the phone and then press either CWM recovery or TWRP recovery in my tool and it should reboot to bootloader, flash the recovery then reboot to system again.
If it is not working for you. Please tell me it so i can fix it
Sv: Sensation XL instal Ruu.exe
Better to use TWRP recovery than cwm.

My bad. 1.05.401.4 worked just fine when I put S-ON back and ran the file when phone was in fastboot.
Hi after a second try it worked. But I didn't test anything. Just installed a new CWM 6.anything I think.
So in this way there is nothing to fix on recovery mode or sd card. I just worked wrong with the program.
So I'm still on this custom rom: Total_Senseless_SXL-v4.1.1
can I simply take one of this versions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791345
and do it like the custom rom update? Means wipe all data and then install this ROM from the thread above ? Are these rom's stock rom's? Don't understand it because the thread title says stock AND root?
I just want to install a stock (original HTC) version on my custom rom
Sorry for the silly questions but there re so much guides that I don't know what to do

in serious need of help for the phone!!!!

Hi guys,
I'm new to the android world. I was playing around with my mum's HTC(was on ICS) and tried to root it, but im not sure if its rooted now, but i have ****ed the phone up hardcore
The problem is phone stuck on HTC Logo and won't boot. It's possible to get it in bootloader and it looks like this: I have unlocked it HTCdev.com
*UNLOCKED*
S-ON
HBoot: 1.28.0004
RADIO-3831.15.00.20_M
eMMC-boot
I dont get a connection to the PC, but after first time plug-in it installed the drivers.
So now my question is how can I get an new Ruu on this phone. Would it be fixed by me installing the ICS RUU.exe file?
I can't seem to find it i do have the code from the HTCdev, but i do not have ANY clue what to do..... Please help me out
To get the correct drivers that are needed for the phone you either should install htc sync then uninistall it again or you should go download my tool, it has an installer for drivers for windows, just not windows 8.
About the code from htcdev, that part you have used correctly. That is a bin file you used to get bootloader *UNLOCKED* and since its saying unlocked you should be good to go.
After unlocking the bootloader you can go to bootloader and flash a custom recovery. To do that you can simple install my runnymede aio tool and press either twrp or cwm recovery button. It will pop up with a box that says "Press Ok when in bootloader" and since you are already in bootloader you can just skip that part and press ok.
after it has flashed recovery it will try to boot to the system just go to bootloader again
When you are in bootloader you can go into recovery.
After that you can flash any custom rom but if you want to stay on a custom rom i will recommed you to flash to specific roms first, found in the "guide" in my Runnymede AIO Tool. And then after that flash any rom for our phone. I know it sounds a little stupid and is is also not cofirmed giving any diffrence but it looks like the htc sensation xl is much more hard to brick if these two roms have been flashed.
If you just want to go back to stock , then flash a custom rom and boot it up.
Then use the function in my tool from fully booted to s-off just remeber to use the one that says your hboot version.
A note here: Hboot version 1.25 = 6.25 and 1.28 = 6.28
after that is done boot the phone up normally and run a ruu.exe file and you will end up in a stock locked rom after that.
Thanks Anders3408 i have followed your instructions and have downloaded your tool(which works like wonders).
Now i am facing another problem. My current rom is a custom one (1.56.401.2), but it tells me there are no hard disk spaces and i keep getting Contacts Storage stopped message (even after i press send report to HTC or even if i declined it....)
I have a similar problem....i'm S-ON UNLOACKED....hboot 1.28.0006 ....i can only have fastboot connection...i even tryed an RUU (RUU_RUNNYMEDE_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_2.31.401.2_Radio_20.70.30.0832U_3831.16.00.16_M_release_258303_signed) but still bootloop! :/ I'm driving crazy!!!
ps: tried to flash a custom recovery but doesn't work!!! (during flash i was on s-on because i couldn't flash hboot s-off )...The phone has no root.

thx for your reply but im completely stuck at cwm.
and for rumrunner i need to be rom booted. so how do i get s-off, when im stuck at cwm.
everytime i start with power on he goes directly to cwm
Edit: and it isn't even listed anymore in adb devices
edit2: i have unlocked my device again and now it isnt stuck on cwm. it tries to boot now with HTC logo then changes to cyanogenmod logo and he is stuck here now
Did you relock the bootloader before you attempted to install the RUU?
If you did and that didn't work I would recommend installing a different recovery. Most ROM developers use TWRP which you can grab here: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/164
then try to install a basic stock rom for your carrier, or if you are on T-Mobile, AT&T or any GSM carrier (including International) use any sense based rom like Android Revolution. Re-lock the bootloader then try again. The issue might be just that you have an unsecured or "unstable" kernal and the RUU doesn't like that.

buy a USB OTG cable, which is available in most supermarkets or on any site if u prefer online and costs abt $5. This cable is basically micro-USB(ur charger port) to a full USB port. Put ur rom zip in the USB, go 2 TWRP and flash the rom directly from the USB.

ok i managed to adb push the custom rom into data/media/0 with recovery mode
how can i install it now?
EDIT: after every reboot my pushed files are gone
If I assume you're still using TWRP simply click "install zips" and navigate to the file you pushed over. The phone should do the rest and you'll have a stock kernel and os to work with.

No He cant use that RUU because his hboot version is 1.55. you need hboot 1.44 to use that ruu and the only way to install that ruu will require s-off.
from htc1guru.com
You will need S-off to run the RUU if you have a higher firmware version on your phone currently.
You may need to flash hboot 1.44 before the RUU will install. S-Off Required.

[Q] Need some help rooting my HTC One M7

Hello,
in the near future I will try to unlock and root my international HTC One M7. Because I don't have many experiance with rooting (so far I have rooted only one phone (HTC Desire Z) a few years ago) I would apriciate some help and tips.
I have seen some nice video tutorials how to unlock and root HTC M7 on xda website:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one/#root
The only problem is that these videos seems quite old and I don't know if procedure is still the same on newer versions of HTC One software? Currently I am running stock Sense software (Android 4.4.3, Sense version 6.0, Software number: 6.09.401.11)
Please tell me if I can follow these video tutorials to root my One even thou I am running newer software and if not which rooting procedure do you recomend for me?
Thanks in advance!

If you are 100% stock at the moment then wait for the Lollipop update which should come to your phone very very soon, because once you root, the update will fail, due to unlocking the bootloader which resets the phone and also deletes the data / preload folder required to update.
However to root, just unlock your bootloader at HTCDev, during the process it will give you sone ADB and fastboot files, keep these, you will need them, then flash TWRP recovery, enter recovery, exit recovery, it will ask you if you want to root before exiting, say yes, when the phone reboots, open SuperSU to update your binary, done.
Thanks!
One more question. Do I have to toggle S-ON to S-Off if i Want to install costum ROMs and kernel?

no, and never toggle, s-off costs $25 using sunshine s-off tool, and if you decide to go that way, never ever s-on again unless for waranty purposes.

Unlock your bootloader: follow instructions from htcdev.com/bootloader
Flash TWRP recovery:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <filename>.zip
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Then boot in TWRP and flash the latest supersu zip from TWRP recovery
the twrp recovery downloads as a .img file
:crying:
am I using the correct download, the
C:\Android>fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.0.2-m7.img
error: cannot load 'twrp-3.0.0.2-m7.img'

the twrp file (yes its a .img file) must be in the same folder where you have adb.exe and fastboot.exe installed on your computer.
"Error: cannot load" = I can't (fastboot) find the file you're talking about
most probable causes:
File not in the right folder
Typo in the file name
I have been distracted..... it has flashed the twrp img file.
how do I
"3. Then boot in TWRP and flash the latest supersu zip from TWRP recovery"
I have the supersu.zip file saved in the same folder on PC.
thankyou for your time and patience alray

You need to transfer SuperSu.zip to your phone. Then reboot to TWRP recovery and flash the file. Reboot, and you're rooted
