Yes, just save the new ones you download in the Notification folder in your internal memory then they will show in the settings list.

To have a different text message sound, you need to go into the messages app, and at the conversations list, tap the " . . . " in the upper-right corner, go to Settings and tap the first option to choose a different text message notification sound.

Fyi I always have to reboot after I put new tones in either Notifications or Ringtones Folders before the new tones will actually show up in you're selection menus.
Anybody else?

You can use File Commander instead of the sound picker, there your new sounds will show up for sure.

You need to change it in the settings of the email app.

Thanks. Tried that too, but it is not giving me an option to set a notification sound in the email settings list.

Here is how to do what you want:
- Go to the main "Settings" app
- Tap "Email" under the Accounts section
- Tap "Account settings"
- Tap the account name you wish to set the notification sound for
- Tap the word "Notification" (make sure the slide switch on the right is set "On" first)
- Tap "Select ringtone" to pick a tone
- Select the one you want and tap the "Done" button.
NOTE: these are for email accounts you use with the Email app. The Gmail app works differently - you change Gmail's notification tone using Gmail's Settings menu from within the app itself.

In the Outlook app, go to Settings > General > Notifications > Email Notifications > Tap the header "Audio Notification", it will now let you pick a sound!

[Q] Changing default Messaging App

Hi there,
Can someone tell me how I change the default app that is used to open text messages?
When I downloaded ChompSMS, I chose that as the default app, but I'd like to change that to Handcent SMS.
Thanks very much,
Menu>settings>applications>manage applications>chompsms then select the clear defaults button
Thanks very much - so how do I go about setting a new default?
the next time you open a message or anything related to messaging, your sammy will ask which app you want to use.. just check the "use by default for this action"

You see, that's what I hoped too.
But I've tried clicking on the Messaging icon and not getting a pop up box. It's just opening up in the standard app.
nope.. not the messaging icon.. because that messaging icon is a shortcut for the built in messaging app..
it must be a messaging "action" like clicking on a "send sms" button on the phonebook...
and also.. if you are referring on the messaging icon on 4 icons at the bottom, you must replace the default messaging icon (shortcut) with the handcent icon..
^instructions: click the applications icon -> menu -> edit -> drag the handcent icon/shortcut to replace the default messaging icon/shortcut
Ah ok, that makes sense. Think I've got it now ... cheers
One last question - is there a way of reverting the icon used for 'Messaging' to its default state?
you mean returning the default messaging shortcut at the bottom? yes you can, you'll notice that when you've replaced it with the handcent shortcut, the default messaging shortcut went to the applications menu. just do the same instructions to replace the handcent shortcut with the default shortcut..
since you'll be using handcent, disable the notifications of the default messaging app & use handcent's notification..
How can I disable notifications on the original notifications? I dont have any...please see my attached pictures...after settings, there is no notification settings for me to uncheck...ive transferred Handcent to the 4 main home button on the menu. but on the original messenger on the applications where i transfered it, it still has a number that its still receiving messages
curious tho. i've tried to drag the handcent app over the messaging app, once in the "applications" page. and it does nothing but let me throw it away..i desperately want to change the "messaging app" also one of the 4 apps at bottom, and make it the handcent. please help! thanks

If you don't see the Edit icon when you click the menu button, make sure you select Customizable List, then Menu, and you'll see the Edit button. Now drag the new icon the the menu bar.

Just to make sure...
Have you gone into the Gmail app settings by hitting the Menu key from the inbox, then selecting More, then selecting Settings, then scrolled down to Notification settings and checked off the first item (Email notifications...Notify in Status Bar...)?
+1 same problem here
EDIT: oh yeah notifications are checked and ringtone is selected from system...?
My DHD sitting next to me gets the notification just fine but I've gotta refresh gmail to see the e-mail.?

Download and use GO SMS or Handcent from the android market. It may do it - they have a lot of extra settings like that. Disable the built in sms app's notifications.
This should be in the general forum, it's not development.
chomp sms comes with a pre-selected sent tone different from incoming

Found the fix!
Go to menu/Personalize/Personalize sound/Notification sound/Email
From there you can set your default/Message/Calendar/Email sounds.
I just tested it with the email notification sound and it works.
is this in the default email app? because I'm not finding the personalization bit.
This may work
Tap the menu button. Select Personalize. Under Personalize Sound, tap Notification Sound. Tap Email. The list shows sound you can choose. There is a dropdown at the top yo get more sounds.
ah ok, its in htc sense launcher. I was using ADW. Doesn't have an option for gmail, but I didn't mean to threadjack this thread anyway.

Yes, and I believe that is the only option on stock. I checked in messenger settings and don't see any option for changing contact specific notifications. This may be an option in 3rd party messenger apps though.
In Messenger - Open a current SMS thread with the contact you want to change > click 3 dot menu > select "People & options" > change notification sound under General. You can also change the color of the conversation for that contact by clicking the color icon next to their name. These changes remain even if you delete the current thread with that contact.
I haven't found a way to change notifications for GMail.

I saw that option and didn't know if that was for specific contact or system wide. Thank you!
