Ive only found a couple of topics on this, one was for dev/unlocked tether on 4.4 and the other was for locked/unrooted thether on 4.4.4. so both just missing what i need.
what is the method, or is there one, for using the native tether on an unlocked Verizon Moto X?

If you are unlocked and rooted the easiest way is to install Xposed framework and Moto Tether module.
no i dont want to do that. easy isnt my primary concern. my primary concern is cleanliness so i would perfer a real mod.
i just read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/themes-apps/app-hotspot-entitlement-bypass-v1-1-5-9-t2705152
if im reading it correctly i can simply add "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" to the build prop but im not yet sure if i read it right
FWIW, on the XT1049 (4.4.2) I tried it out by modifying these two properties in /system/build.prop under # ADDITIONAL_BUILD_PROPERTIES:
ro.mot.tether_dun_required=0
ro.tether.denied=false
...and then I added the line:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
This seemed to work in a quick test loading a webpage, but I haven't used it beyond that.

Correct. The Tool in that thread works for the XT1060 which is bootloader unlocked and rooted.
The other way is to use the wifi_tether_v3_4-experimental1.apk from https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
change device profile to galaxy nexus (cdma/lte)
check box: wifi-driver reload
check box: enabled routing fix
If you have troubles, its also suggested to...
check box: wifi-driver reload 2
I use the wifi-tether APK on my Dev Edtion XT1060 for Verizon (unlocked and rooted, running 4.4.4, it worked on 4.4.2 and 4.4 also)

I don't see those in the XT1060 build.prop.

I think the best method is to use Xposed Installer and the X Tether (Moto Tether) module. This allows you to use the stock Mobile Hotspot app without having to modify/replace it. As easy as this is to setup (install Xposed Installer, install the module, reboot and done) it's just as easy to revert it when the next update comes out (just disable the module and Xposed Installer).
Bonus....you now have Xposed Installer so you can grab other modules if you like (ie...Root Cloak, Gravitybox, etc..).

I agree and it is a snap to uninstall it. But for some reason, the OP doesn't want to do that - I am guessing it is a work phone maybe and he wants it to be less obvious?

Xposed does make changes to system, and some modules can caused reduced battery life.
Not everyone wants that.
Some just want to be simply stock, rooted and have the ability to tether. Xposed and its modules is extra stuff installed.
@TheWhiteChallenger
There are two "easy" and "light weight" options already posted in this thread. The app in the other thread that modifies the build.prop on the fly, and the wifi tether for root apk.
Or you can install Xposed and the Tether Module like the other suggested.

Xposed itself is a very small modification and doing the Tether module is near the same as using the modified stock tether app. I've tried both methods and the Xposed method is cleaner and much simpler. Add in the bonus of an extremely simple method to revert without the hassle of removing/renaming/restoring the stock tether app and it's near perfect.
With that done....you can be done. The added bonus is you do have the option of adding in additional modules if you like.

we'll have to agree to disagree here.
WiFi tether apk I use is a stand alone app, doesn't need to be undone to update, only runs when i launch it. etc. The app from the other thread just changes/updates the build.prop. It does nothing else. Nothing needs to be undone to update. No extra apps running, etc.
There are many options because one-size doesn't fit all.
ok...
first, can we plz stop the exposed debate be for it goes any further, those kind of answers are exactly the answers this thread was started to avoid. i appreciate the attempt to help but ur just ignoring the intent of the original question and further complicating the issue.
second,i found the solution: use build prop editor (or whatever u want to use) to add net.tethering.noprovisioning=true , delete VzwEntitlementService.apk and its .odex, done

I wouldn't delete them, just rename them. If you want to take a future OTA, you'll need to put them back.

Hello, I also have an unlocked (via sunshine) verizon moto x, currently running 4.4.2 and rooted with towelpie because I have never installed a custom rom and don't want to muck anything up. But if it's not too hard to install a custom rom I may try. Is this what you have done?
All I have done is ran sunshine and unlocked the bootloader, it's still on 4.4.2 and rooted with towelpie. Do I have write since I unlocked the boot or do I have to install a twrp to gain write? I am familiar with sqlite editer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.sqleditor&hl=en
is this something like what you used to write the command to tether?
Thank you

a text editor or notepad type app can be used to edit build.prop. SQLite or such wont work.
In theory, using Sunshine to gain unlocked bootloader should grant write protection disable, however I'm not familure enough with it to be sure. This post -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45604505&postcount=33 should still work to allow you to check write protection status.
If you can undo TowelPieRoot (usually just rebooting, or at worst flashing system.img using mfastboot will work), you can easily flash TWRP and get a proper root and write protection disabled.
A custom rom is not needed to tether.
If you have root, and write protection disabled, two EASY ways to tether on Verizon are in Post #5 above...

Not familiar with towelpie, but if there is a way to undo the root, possibly by going to supersu and doing a full unroot, then you can regain root (with proper r/w to system) by flashing a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP and flashing the supersu.zip ( http://download.chainfire.eu/396/SuperSU/ )

GladiAtrix Enabler v1.05 (Sideloading/Tethering APN)
Quick and simple tool to enable sideloading or add the AT&T tethering APN to your device, should you need it. This requires root to work
Also, this is a Windows only script. If anyone wants to port this to Linux or OSX I'd be happy to include links in the main post.
TESTED working on:
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.26
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.52
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.57
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.83
Rooted Bell Firmware 0.37.4
If you test it and it works on a version different than listed here, let me know and I'll update the first post
I do not have anything but an AT&T Atrix to test this on, but the sideloading fix should work if any device. The tethering APN is only for AT&T as it's carrier specific.
Little bit of additional info here:
Enables sideloading for any device
Adds AT&T tethering APN
You need to click "allow" to superuser when prompted.
Installation instructions:
Read the directions.
Read the directions again.
Read the directions a third time. If you do not understand a step, ASK before starting.
Download the script
Extract the files to C:\GladEnable. Do not install anywhere else. Having it inside a folder with a space will cause the script to FAIL.
Enable USB debugging (Settings -> Applications -> Development).
Connect your phone (I recommend setting USB Connection to 'None').
Run GladEnable.bat (If you're using Windows 7, run as admin by holding down control and double-clicking).
Follow the on-screen directions. You will need to tap "Allow" on your phone for each step.
Make sure you allow the superuser request on your phone or it WILL fail.
All done!

I realize it doesn't say it in the OP, but does this add the reboot option like your original Mod?
Brilliant, Ririal
Thanks for all your amazing work. I plan on running this script tomorrow.
In the event that reboot is not in the power popup, I really like Quickboot from the market. I have a shortcut to reboot the phone under my power widget. Works great.

This is not the GladiAtrix rom. It only does sideloading/tethering APN for users who just want to enable that, or for users who were using v1 of my retain root script and didn't enable it before hand with aRoot.
The ROM (when it's done, I'm having some issues with the installer. The ROM part is technically finished ) has the reboot power menu option.

Thanks Ririal,
Many people are realizing that Titanium Backup restores App+Data well, but most system data and settings restores are breaking functionality. A factory reset will restore Blur account and some other settings that are lost but will also make side loading and tethering go away.
Now users we have a way to get those back with out a full SBF.

This update totally fixed my sideloading and tethering issues.
BTW, the script failed on me the first time, I'm not sure why. Something about permission denied on ./data/local/tmp/gladenable.sh. But the second time I ran it, everything worked.
Thank you so much Ririal!

It's possible that Motorola patched the workaround for tethering. All this script does is add the custom APN, which used to work. I haven't looked at other methods for permanently enabling tethering as this method has worked for me in the past.
Manually add APN
Is it possible to add an APN without using the script, like with the Samsung Captivate, I'm asking because I'm planning to use the phone outside the US therefore I'm gonna need an APN not from AT&T...

Problems...
I'm having an issue while running the command. I'm a recent iPhone user so this is all new to me. First I'd like to make sure this is all I need to do in order to install 3rd party apps (a.k.a. apps I obtain online) I don't need to do a full-blown root, do I?
While the command is running, it first asks me, "Do you want to install sideloading?" I input 'y' and hit Enter. That results in: " /system/bin/su: not found " Does this mean I need to root first?
Maybe one or more files are not getting extracted, but I don't see anything else in the download. My download contains 5 files.
1. GladEnable.bat
2. gladenable.sh
3. abd.exe
4. AdbWinApi.dll
5. AdbWinUsbApi.dll
Let me know if there's anything else you need that would help solve the problem.

That's a part of HTC sense. You can buy Beautiful Widgets from the market that includes copies of those widgets.
Is there a reliable app or even one that works to tether wirelessly if you're rooted with the temporary TowelRoot method? I'm on KitKat 4.4.2. All the reviews on the Play Store for the various WiFi apps have negative reviews. I don't want USB tethering either. Need it for my Nexus. Any help would be great.

It is. It's not the greatest and a bit unreliable at times, but it's working for my Titanium Backup and root version of Greenify.
To find out if the xposed module installed successfully, how can I test tethering? I'm not sure where native tethering is located.

I have a VZW DE on 4.4.2, unlocked bootloader, rooted, no custom ROM.
Was wondering if there is any way to hide the system update prompts/notifications as I'd rather wait for a more substantial upgrade (Android L).
Using root explorer I did go to etc/security/ and renamed otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak to no avail. Also, there didn't seem to be anything for me to freeze in TiBu.
Not only is this a marginal upgrade imo, I just don't want to mess with going back to stock recovery, upgrading to 4.4.4, flashing TWRP, re-root, do system tweaks (e.g. replace ugly vzw 4G Icon and bars, but first check to see if someone made one compatible to 4.4.4), research whether wifi tether from xposed module still works on 4.4.4, etc. Just plain don't have the time to do all that at the moment.
Thanks in advance!
I thought I had replied to this exact question yesterday...
use a root capable file explorer, got to /system/priv-apps and rename 3C_OTA.APK
Of course, if your phone has already downloaded the file, navigate to /cache and remove it.
Reboot after making the changes.
that has prevented getting prompted in the past.
I did what Mark said.. renamed the 3c ota apk and also 3c ota odex file and confirm it will stop download and notices. if you just rename the 3c ota apk file alone and not the odex file to, you may get the download and reboot problems.. someone will have to confirm that, I gave a Moto X to my little brother running 4.4 and only renamed the 3c ota apk file and four weeks later he gave it back to me with a cracked screen and said it kept rebooting trying to update but failed because it was rooted. that's when I opened up root file explorer and noticed I did not change the odex file, I only changed the apk file. I'm running a 4.4 rooted and change both files and I never get the updates.
on my brother's new replacement phone running 4.4.2 I have it rooted with towelPie and renamed both files and seems to not be bothering me about the update now. I did let it download the new update at first attempt I went in and deleted the two files and it interrupted the download so I can confirm it will stop the download deleting those two files even when the download has already began
Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you take the update?

I can say for my two Non-DE Verizon Moto X phones running 4.4.2 and TowelPieRoot that I'm not taking the update for root reasons first and foremost. Until the time when a 4.4.4 root method is developed, if ever, I'll remain on 4.4.2.
I appreciate the suggestions in this thread however because I'm looking to hide these notices myself.

Thanks, all! I went ahead and renamed the odex as well. Rebooted and good to go!

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you take the update?

Would have to do a whole mess of stuff, like:
disable xposed frameworks and gravity box, defrost certain system apps and vzw bloat from TiBu probably, re-install android sdk (since I had formatted PC since 4.4.2), flash stock recovery, take the OTA, reflash custom recovery, re-enable xposed and gravity box (only gravity box has since split from one module to an ICS and KK version and I still have the old version), then upgrade and tweak gravity box settings, get rid of ugly VZW 4GLTE icon with stock/nexus version (but first see if someone made one that works on 4.4.4), research whether the xposed wifi-tether module works on 4.4.4, and maybe one or two other things...
all that takes TIME which I don't have a whole lot of at the moment... and all that for the ability to pause video recording and a get a dialer that has a white background instead of black? and supposed tweaks under the hood like battery and performance, all unconfirmed? yeah, personally, I'd rather wait.
Fair enough. So you know if you flash system.img once you reinstall xposed all your gravity box settings are still there.

Why not just use the FULL FXZ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/fxz-moto-x-4-4-4-212-55-26-t2827307
If you flash the FXZ, (since it is a "Keep Data" FXZ), you don't need to take the OTA. You don't need to disable Xposed. You don't need to disable any modules - or subsequently set them back up. You don't need to flash stock recovery. You don't need to worry about any modifications you have made to /system.... And you DON'T NEED THE OTA!
And just like @Schaweet has advised -- once you re-flash TWRP, re-root, and re-install Xposed Framework, all of your Xposed modules and their respective settings are already set the way you had them....
It turns this in to about a 10-15 minute process from start to finish. WAYYYY Easier. I don't get it...
EDIT: I do see that you have the "Old" gravitybox installed, so this might require setting up the new version. But everything else stated is completely relevant.
I froze MotorolaOTA 1.0

HUGE. I haven't been following any forums for several months and was not aware of this FXZ. Great to know, thanks!

Systemless-anything only works on android 6.0+. The CM-based 6.0 roms available for the Droid Turbo all come with system-based root built in, and as far as I know there is no way to remove this (you can disable it in the developer options, but I don't think that's good enough in this case). So the only way I can see this working on a Droid Turbo is if you managed to get the Brazilian Moto Maxx official 6.0.1 update running on it via baybutcher's kernel, installed supersu in systemless mode and then followed this procedure. That's a lot of work for something that will likely still fail SafetyNet due to the unofficial kernel. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.
To summarize, yes, you could probably get it to install, but the things you would have to do to get it to install would cause it to fail SafetyNet, which defeats the purpose of a systemless install.
banking app, not baking app, f**ks sake
Hello there. I have been using stock android 7.1.1 for a while and decided to try using roms again (Pure Nexus). One of the apps that i need is "Vipps" its a Norwegian banking app used to transfer money to friends and stuff, but its notorious for finding root. I used to use xposed and root cloak on android 6, but i know well it dosent work with 7. Magisk dosent hide it, suhide dosent hide it.
After installing Vipps it rejects opening promting me with "Vipps does not support rooted devices". Only thing is its running a ROM that comes with no root.
- Cheers, Kristiansja
edit: root checker doesn't find annything either

Go into the root settings and remove root. Mind you this cause some of the features of the rom to stop working. Apps like that are not only looking for root but also for unlocked bootloaders. So if those apps are important to you then might want to stick to a fully stock set up and relock your bootloader.

Go into developer option and turn off USB debugging. After that, reboot the phone and see if Vipps is working. If that doesn't work, I have one more suggestion.
It's probably checking ro.build.tags and/or ro.build.type. These are set to test-keys and userdebug on PN (if I remember correctly) and some apps need them to be set to release-keys and user. It could also be looking for other prop values and possibly also busybox (also included in PN, I believe).
Or BusyBox...
