Replacing Default Dialer? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can the default dialer be replaced without rooting / unlocking BL ?

You can't remove it, you can install another dialler program though, and use that instead if you want. Just put a shortcut to the new one in your dock.

I suggest ex-dialer, it's really nice --> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.modoohut.dialer&hl=en

Ex dialer is nice and simple. I like it! But I'm still have the same trouble like the old dialer where a contact with multiple numbers shows up all of them during searches. My old S2 used to combine them into a single find and displayed the default number only.

You can change it in the exdialer settings..

How about contact +? I like how it combines details into one contact (i.e. facebook, watsapp, googel+, email).

Hi
It is many program to change dialer but unfortunately you can not change it, just change the icon from screen.
BIG PROBLEM when receive calls will open Sony Dialer not your dialer.
Regards,

i find that the stock dialer is good without needing to install a 3rd party app

Set Phonebook as default

Hi,
I am trying to set the Phonebook app as my default contacts manager but of course it does not offer that option.
Anyone know whether it is even possible yet or if there is another app that can replace the stock contact manager.
Im really just looking for an easier way of scrolling through my contacts
For example iContact burt edition for windows mobile
i wish i could just find phonebook, its no longer in the market. im assuming it was removed so they could start charging for it.

it's not listed with the featured apps on mine and checking with others on the #android chan, they dont have it either.
Thats odd, I am looking at it right now maybe its because I already have it installed on my phone or because google has damned me for the time being and hasnt allowed me to see paid apps!
the featured apps right now are
Wertago, wikitude, personal safety, imap, klondike, blackjack, brain genius, pro football live, ebay, picsay, shopsavy, telegraph, bluebrush, bonsai blast, myspace.
pm me the apk of it if you would!
I would love to have the phonebook apk back, if anyone could pm me as well.
Here's phonebook app.
Here you go, just rename it back to .apk and install.

dude, you FREAKIN rock !
thank you!
So it cant actually be set as default? maybe in future updates
I think it can not be set as default at this moment. I have searched for this answer a lot, but found nothing.
jus delete your orginal phonebook, back it up first, thats what i did
Where do you find the downloaded apk from the market?
I can't compare to Phonebook, because it's been so long since I've used that app. Acontacts (totally free) is the most full featured contact app on the market IMO, and allows you to set as default when you press the call button. Good call log which can be set default and very responsive dev, as well.
Another one I've recently tried is Easy Dial Pro (ya I know Pro usually means $, but it's free, also). I heard about it in a thread here. Not quite used to it yet, but it seems really good when I played around with it. The call log may be better than aContacts. Again, you can set Easy Dial and Easy Call Log as defaults.
Hope this helped.
When you press the call button it will come up with "Launch using Dialler/Phonebook" tick the "Always use this program for this function" tickbox and select Phonebook.
If that doesn't come up then you have the dialler set as default go into applications > manage applications and then click on dialler, press the clear defaults button.

Anytime you install a new application that can be set as default, you are always prompted for which option you would like until you default it in the checkbox. Last time I tried to clear stock dialer default (user error), there was no option (donut drc63) so I had to un/reinstall my dialer app to get the list back.

GO Dialler/Contacts annoyances. Best alternative?

I've been using Go Dialler/Contacts for well over a year, previously on my HTC desire and it had the same issue back then where it wouldn't register the cleared missed calls, so if you got a missed call, it would say 1 missed call, then you would check the missed call and the notification would go. Then if you got another missed call (and only 1) it would then say 2 missed calls, this would go on and on until you restarted the phone. On the desire I solved this by putting the app in system/app with root explorer.
Another annoyance is that when you dial or try to save a number, it automatically puts spaces between digits where country/area code are. I like to keep my numbers all in the same format, that means no spaces or anything, so just +XXXXXXXXXX
I use my phone for business so save a lot of numbers, this is going to be a pain to have to edit each number while saving a contact.
So just wondering, since go dialler/contacts hasn't been updated since nov '12, is there any newer and better alternatives that work the same way with the dialler predictions (and having latest dialled show up smartly when composing new message in GO SMS also - this is handy!) but which don't have the annoyances?
Any feedback appreciated!

I am new to the world of Android, having previously been a RIM and iOS user. However, since coming over to Android and seeing the open nature of the platform...loving it. Anyway, back to the matter in hand....Contacts+ works brilliantly, I would suggest giving it a look :good:
I use 'ExDialer & Contacts' app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5tb2Rvb2h1dC5kaWFsZXIiXQ..
Very simply themable dialler and contacts app.
Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know what this means?
"This is a trial version with 7 days trial period. When the trial period expired, you will be asked to buy PRO version. You can still keep trying if you haven't decided to buy"
So is it free to keep using or what? Do they keep bugging you to upgrade/pay?
I don't have experience of it,but I would guess you will get nags to upgrade, although with what frequency I couldn't say. I think that is one of the reasons I stuck with contacts+...it's free! That and the integration with FB, it's merge facility etc

Going to try out exdialer first I think, seems to have a lot of recommendations from what I've seen, first impressions are good anyway and it's solved the issue of the number having the spaced put automatically. I think the missed call issue might be in every dialler so I might have to put it in system app

Is free but every 7 days when you next open the dialler it will show a screen asking if you want to buy the full version.
Very easy to ignore if you don't want to pay for the full version.

thanks, every 7 days, so 52 notifications a year, hmm, seems a bit much
It used to come up daily but i think the developer changed it to 7 days because too many people complained!

Thanks, I'll give it a trial anyway and see how it fares.
Try Dialer One, a very nice app.
Thanks, it actually turns out that ex dialler doesn't solve the issue with numbers being automatically formatted with spaces etc also, the add contact screen is a bit messy of exdialler, I find go contacts better in that regard, go may even be slightly faster?
Would anyone know how to get around the auto formatting at all? There's an option in exdialler not to use area codes or something which I thought would help but it doesn't.

I don't find a problem with the spaces in the numbers so can't help with that one!
Regarding the add contact, when I click on the + button to add a contact it takes me to my default Motorola add contact screen (which is also messy!) so I'm not sure there is anything I can do about that.
When you add a contact is it taking to you an ex dialler add contact screen?
Yes, I downloaded Ex Dialler and Contacts (I'm not sure if there's a simple "ex dialer" link without the contacts?) but now I can choose either ex dialer contacts or go contacts. Unless ex dialer is using the motorola contacts?
Have now tried dialer1 and contacts+.
Contacts+ is a bit overkill for me and not customisable to get rid of contact pictures, change font etc so it just looks too clunky for me.
I'm very happy with Dialer 1, but there's two things I miss from Go Contacts:
1) The ability to search part names, so say for example you had a contact saved with a long, easily forgetable name, something like josternberg and you could never remember it, but you knew part of his name was "stern", that if you type 78376 it would show up. Unfortunately at the moment it doesn't, but it does in other aps (Go Contacts/Dialer and Contacts+). This would be especially useful for anyone who has saved contacts without putting spaces between certain words. So imagine I had a few hundred android developers phone numbers and saved them as: androiddevappname, I could get to all dialer contacts by typing "342537" for dialer, even though it's surrounded by other characters.
2) Alphabet scrolling in the contact window. At the moment there's only a little green bar that can be scrolled down/up. In Go Contacts/Dialer, there was a permanent alphabet sidebar (small but capable) which you could hit any letter to get to that section of your contacts. I've over 1,000 contacts saved with a sequential first name code starting with VTA (for my business) and after saving a new contact, I used to be able to quickly to the letter "w" scroll up a step and check that the new contact I saved was there, two actions but without the alphabet bar it's going to take a bit of scrolling to get there.
Also waiting on the release of light theme
I am pretty sure you can enable smart dialing in dialerOne settings...
Thanks negus, yes dialer1 does have smart dialing, but will only work at the start of each name, so say if I had you saved in my phone as "xdaforum negus40", I'd be able to find you by numbering in N E G U S or X D A, but not by numbering in U S 4 0 or F O R U M. I sent the dialer 1 team an email which they replied to quickly saying they'll look into adding these functions

[Q] Search for contacts by dialing number.

On my old phone with cyanogen (running off 4.2), the dialer app allowed me to search for a contact. For example, if I wanted to call 'Ben', I could dial 236 and it would show my contact named Ben. It would search both for part of the person's name, or their number (so I could start typing in 312-123 and it would suggest a contact who had that number).
I could have *sworn* this was working during my first few days with the moto x...otherwise I wouldn't have been able to call anybody without getting annoyed since this is my primary way of dialing numbers from my contact list.
Was there an app update that disabled this? Is there a setting I accidentally turned off? I couldn't find anything in the options...
What do I have to do to get this behavior again on my moto x? I know I could use TouchPal or some other replacement app, but I'd prefer to just use the built in phone app.
You need a 3rd party dialer
or when 4.3 gets to this phone we'll have it.

So it is entirely in my head that this worked before?
I basically either search from the dialer screen or click someone in recent calls, so when the phone/sim was new (blank recent calls), I would have had to search and I would think I would notice it.
I must be losing it
Yeah, it still bugs me that stock android before 4.3 doesn't have a feature that's been on HTC devices since Froyo.
Yeah, my galaxy S had it with the touchwiz dialer (pre-froyo even)...and my old nokia and motoroloa razr both functioned the same way too.
So when I switched to cyanogen and it was gone, I was not happy and switched to TouchPal dialer...but other than the search function, TouchPal was much worse than stock.

Dear All,
I'm trying to find an application or any setting by which the number wont appear just the name during call screen. For example " john " in saved in my contacts. When he calls me his name appears on the screen but not the number.. Just his name. Please help me with this I've googled a lot but unfortunately did not avail anything. kindly help.

Here is an app which can block phone numbers on incoming calls.
Instead of displaying phone numbers, it displays "private" or "unknown".
You can check it out at the playstore, here is the link for the app:

What you're looking for is a modified "in call ui" but I'm afraid that functionality wouldn't be removed from many modified versions. There's full screen mods which may or may not display the number, then there's roms that have built in theming like alliance, where you could change the in call ui text color to transparent for certain elements (ie the phone number).
But every contacts and dialer app is just that-contacts and dialer. It won't change the appearance of the in call ui because it has no bearing on that, once the call or answer button is hit, the task is handed over to incallui.apk... so you won't find anything in the play store. Best bet would be to find a themed version of in call ui or beg/pay a themer to theme your in call ui with transparent dialer text for you (considering it's an odd request and wouldn't be something with a wide release). One other thing to note-if you accomplish getting an in call ui made the way you want it (or find one already made that way) it may not work on all roms, so be sure that the file you hand over for theming is from a rom you plan to use for a good while.
that was really helpful.. I'll try to make a request and see if i can get something. Btw i also found this app which is " Ultimate Caller ID Screen HD " . The lite version servers only 6 contacts. The app lets you change the font size , font type and font color of the Caller Screen. So i chose a black backround image for the contact and changed the font color of the number to black. Now the number is not visible. It did serve me well.
Thanks to all of you who helped.
Appreciated

I'm glad you found a workaround that works for you!
Always remember it's usually easier to hide certain element(s) by either making them transparent or match the background, or making the actual size of them nearly non-existent... than it is to remove the element(s). When it comes to contacts you have the phone/contacts and the incallui, so finding specifically what you're looking for is the key. Glad you found something that works. Might be worth it to purchase the pro version if you decide you like it and it meets your needs, it probably would offer more choices in the coloring and such (like alpha) and of course no 6-contact limit. Good luck!

This is a modified dialer apk, and root is NOT required. All credit for this goes to those mentioned in the original OP.
I know this is in the S6 forums, but it is confirmed (by me) working on G5.

It's more visually pleasing? For people who really want a stock Google experience, it's one more thing to get you closer to that. With this and the Contacts app installable from APK Mirror, I'm officially using all the stock Marshmallow apps for everything but my Exchange email.

I find the LG dialler requires more finger presses. But I'm coming from the Song Xperia dialler.
New call: Go to dialler. Possibly not on the call tab so click that. Start to type name and some suggests come up. Click on the [v]. Select the person/number to call. And now the bit that annoys me, press the call button. If I click on number why not just call them, why show number and wait for me to press another button?
Call back: So I missed a call. Go to dialler, go to call logs, click on the call I missed. Show the contact details. WTF? So now I click the phone icon and call. Yes I know there is a little call icon but I'm used to clicking a phone number and it dials it. Not have to locate one tenth of the call log line to start a call.
Anyway, I'll get used to it but I do think I have to do more work for simple calls versus other diallers.
Wow. That is as clear and concise an answer as I could ask for. I wish my wife would answer simple questions like that, but I have to ask her twenty follow-up questions just to get an answer to the first one! So, I do see what you mean, and I have found it at least a little annoying myself. I guess I just accepted it as the way it is. Never really thought to look for a different dialer, but by golly it just might be worth a look now. Thanks for taking the time to give such a thorough answer. I hope you type much faster than I do, but I use Swype keyboard.
Does the original Dialer needs to be uninstalled first before installing Google-Dialer 3.00?
-> If yes, where to get that original Dialer found and uninstalled?
How about if Google-Dialer will be updated in future to 3.xx?
- Auto-Update or manual update needed?
- Link to webside to be able to always have the latest version installed?
Thx
It's crashing on me. Where can I get one that works?

Ive had no issues with this. Been using it for a week or so & has been flawless.
Also been working for me with no issues. Combined with the Google Contacts app and then Calendar, Clock, and Calculator, throw an icon pack into Nova, and I seriously feels like I'm stock. Very very happy.
as soon as i click on the icon i get "Unfortunately, Phone has stopped" message.
There are several versions out there. It would be helpful if ya'll would specify which version is or is not working. I am running the 2.05.07_rc4 with no issues. I haven't tried the 3.0 version yet.
