[Q] Is it possible to root Z3 Compact without unlocked bootloader? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I want to buy Z3 Compact. But some things are unclear for me.
I need root on my phone but I do not want to lost DRM and the others functionality such miracast etc.
So my qustion is:
Is some way how to root Z3 Compact without unlocked bootloader?
Many thanks for answers.

No, not yet.

It's a great phone even if you can't root it yet.

It would be even perfect for me without root if Google didn't decide the non-sense to disable external SD write permissions for apps.
Other than that it's the first phone where I don't feel the need to install a custom ROM.

They didn't disable it but limit it to app-specific locations, otherwise any user app could write everywhere which was a huge security flaw. Iirc there will be a new approach to this with Android L.

Hi,
I'm using root for:
1. phone profiles
2. move obb directory to external SD
3. installing Gentoo
4. Samba server
5. xposed framework for a lot of functions....
6. Titanium backup
7. Change PPI
And a lot of other functions....
Z3 Compact is realy great phone, but Android without ROOT is useless for me...
So I hope that rooting will be corrected and functionality won't be lost after it.

You have nexus for all this. Right.

Nexus is big and without SD card, FM radio is useless...

What are you using to adjust PPI? I tried a few apps but it never seemed to work properly.

I'm using density changer. It works great on my Samsung.
I'm using this because I hate a big text and icons. Why should I have big 5" LCD with luncher 4x4 icons on? It is creazy, I'm not blind, I still have a good eyes...
For example. On my Samsung S4 LTE+. GMAIL has got only 5 messages in the e-mail list with stock ROM, but now I have got 10 e-mails per one screen. It is still comfortable to read it.

For PPI, no better option than xposed framework and appsettings module. Application specific pixel density

[Q] Just rooted my phone! adivce? cool apps?

Ok, first off i'll say i don't have much android knowledge. I did successfully root it following a video. I now have one click lag fix installed. Now, someone please answer these for me
1. Now that its already rooted successfully, is bricking still possible? or is that only something that happens during trying to root.
2. What is a good way to backup everything on my phone? and where do i find it?
3. What are cool apps or widgets to have that can only be used on a rooted phone?
4. Lastly, will someone point me in the direction of a manual or instructions on how to install custom roms and how to get froyo.
Thanks!!
i'd like to know that too...

1. No
2. Titanium Backup from the market
3. I don't know but I don't care much for widgets.
4. Check sticky posts here and the dev board of galaxy s
try SetCPU for conserving/overclocking your device,
Titanium Backup is godsend! well worth the price
Try rom manager from the market, it will assist in making a more comprohensive backup
Most custom roms should have a good install guide with them and aslong as you read it first, download everything first, and not get scared off by the reference to all the diferent csc files its qctually fairly easy. In the event that it does go wrong it probably was a user error but easily fixed by going over the steps again (i myself only just flashed my first android last weekend, and the improvement is worth the time and small hassle of learning to do it your self).
Some good apps are ShootMe (screenshot app), rescan media root (controls the media scanner function), cache cleaner, and there are some wifi transfer app that need root to work (still fairly new/beta/buggy). Not root but the xda forum app aswell
Hope that helps a bit

Root Explorer is the best file manager i've come across, works great and well worth the price.
Best apps (I know these dont all require root) I've come across are
"App 2 SD" - This moves your installed apps (that are compatible) to your external memory card to save phone memory
"Titanium backup" (root) - As mentioned above, its a great backup tool for your apps and settings
"CacheMate" (root) - clears your apps cache, helps speed things up
"MixGet" - increase headphone volume, very useful if you find output it quiet, be careful not to deafen yourself
"PhoneMyPC" - Connect via wifi to your computer and control, useful if you want to be lazy and sit back to move the mouse
Best thing to do is goto market and search "root", that will return the majority of them
"Handcent SMS" - Very customisable sms app, much better than stock samsung one
Good games:
Angry Birds - This is free but includes ad's (turn off internet on phone so they dont display)
Talking Tom cat - repeats everything you say in a funny voice
Need for speed Shift - Excellent graphics, really good racing game
Asphalt 5 - (can get this free from samsung apps)
Widgets I use:
Accuweather - self explanatory, great for the days weather, includes a clock (find this on samsung apps on F.W JPM) available in market
Facebook - Facebook Status updates
If I think of any others I'll let you know

Incredible S file explorer

Hello
I'm waiting for my new Incredible S to arrive shortly and in the meantime I'm reading the user manual, I'm new to Android coming from Windows Mobile world.
Question: if I have backupped my applications to the memory card, in case of an hard reset, is there a way to reinstall them without passing through AppMarket? I have not found any File Explorer or Application Manager included in the ROM... are you obliged to connect to internet and download them?
Thanks
You can use Titanium Backup to back up and restore your apps.
They are not passed through the Android Market.
I do recall the app requires root, but that will be possible soon and is easy to do.

Hi there, I hope you will enjoy android!
There is indeed no file explorer installed on the Incredible S.
And yes, you will have to register your google account to access the market to download a file explorer (Astro File Manager for example)

Hi!
Thanks for your prompt answer! I suspected that after reading many threads on this matter. It seems a sort of limitation, I mean, having an SD card with your backup data and needs to connect to internet to download a file manager to install them..
But ok, this is the way it works
please use the ES File Manager .GO Android Market search "ES"
If you really wan't to avoid android market, you could usb adb (android debug bridge) to install titanium backup and then restore your apps. Or you could use adb to install certain apk's (apps are always .apk) you stored on your pc.
simple commands like
adb install C:\bla\bla\*.apk work like a charm
so if you download a filemanager, say "filemanager.apk".
you can give the command
adb install C:\bla\downloads\filemanager.apk
and it will install it on you phone after which you can acces all your files directly on your device.
You will need the SDK and some more info
If you want to use the adb, cd to \platform-tools\
But all this will be clear after a few hours of reading, trial and error
Welcome to Android.

Hello!
thanks for your info. I was actually playing with adb and see it is very powerful. But you need the pc connected to your phone of course and again it seems not a so comfortable solution. I find a little bit curious not having an application installer or file explorer embedded in the system.
About the backup, I know that Tytanium need root privileges, correct? As far as I know no root procedure are still available on Incredible S. But, will tytanium allow to select what you want to restore? Maybe root is not necessary is you want to restore your application and not system files
Thanks

Yes, with titanium backup it is possible to select only certain apps that you wan't to restore.
It is indeed strange that HTC doesn't ship their android devices with a file manager, I recall my Hero didn't have one too. My Galaxy S does, although it's extremely basic.
I think after a few weeks when the first custom roms come out they will probably have a file manager installed in them. Until then I would recommend Linda Filemanager or OI Filemanager from the market, they are both free and quite powerful.
Cheers,
DaanJordaan
Regarding Titanium Root requirements. It does allow you to select between applications to restore, but the root check at start-up means you can't even access the backup/restore screen if your device isn't rooted.
It would be interested to see if a temproot is sufficient to restore certain apps. Something for me to try when i get home
As for the file manager... i think it was a concious decision to keep the device consumer focused. HTC has changed much in the last 2 years and definitely closed a lot of doors/windows they had open to devs and geeky consumers.

ADB + App2SD not enough to enable SD as installation storage without root?

I know that SD Apps without root has been asked a lot of time so I won't ask about this.
But still I tried to use ADB Bridge to command pm set-install-location 2 to see how it would turn. At first I thought that it worked, but instead I found that it is not working. Plus I got the error "Not enough storage" so I had to switch back to 0 (auto storage location).
Isn't there any way to make use of ADB on our phones to get a working app like APP2SD enable the "Move App" button? Or just a way to do it via the computer?
I'm not really into rooting etc right now, I remember that jailbreak and tweaks were taking a LOT of my time when I was on iOS and I don't want to go back to the custom route with my Z1. I just don't need custom ROMs etc, the phone works like a charm with stock 4.3. Eventually Z2 Apps and Kitkat could make me jump all the way to root but this is off-topic.
So anyway : Is there any way to make use of ADB to enable installation or location change of apps on our SD cards?

Just use folder mount m8, does everything for you, simply pick the folder you want to mount on SD, mount it in the location that the app gives (should be a mirror of the apps path but on the ext SD card) then allow it to mount and you're done.
I've got about 12 huge games installed and i'm still on 9GB.
It works exactly as it should.

Appreciate that but in all fairness root is an app away and quite removable, without root i'm guessing no.
All of the scripts that i've seen over the years that enable this feature all require root or something from the OEM's side to enable it, I think the galaxy S4 had the ability to move apps to SD to combat the low memory that users were left with, but without Sony directly implementing this I think you'll have a hard time doing this.
If it were me i'd root, as i said it's quite removable.
Good luck all the same
Ok guys thank you for the the replies ! Well I wonder if I must root since there can be bootloader locking issues. I'll look for this

You wont have root without unlocked bootloader atm as there are problems with mounting system partition rw without kernel that fixes it, and cjanging kernel requires unlocked bootloader. But you can always downgrade to 4.2.2, root then without unlocking bootloader and either keep using 4.2.2 or backup TA, then update to 4.3 and when you will want to remove root just flash back stock kernel and then restore TA

[Q] Rooting Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G SGH-T679

Most posts on this are two years old and links no longer work to files needed...
I have never rooted my SGH-T679 but now I keep getting notices that the phone memory is low. I would like to root without touching the rom on the phone so that I can finally dump the bloatware. I have read the XDA thread on rooting this phone and the links to root-stock.zip - 1.62 MB no longer work - come up file deleted or missing. Also second file required - ClockworkMod (? - not sure the name) also comes up as not found.
Yes, it is an old phone (actually only three years old) and I can't afford a another one right now. If I can still root this phone I can get more years out of it. And I like the Gingerbread rom it has.
Also - will the rooting process wipe out all currently downloaded and installed apps? I'd like to avoid that too if possible.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
Rooting wipes nothing. Links work fine for me. Perhaps dev-host was down at the time.
http://d-h.st/s9X root
http://d-h.st/O36 cwm
Are you talking about storage space? Removing bloat will not help as that only frees up system space which most apps won't use. If you mean actual memory rooting alone won't help and removing bloat won't help at all. These phones have very little memory and the only thing that will really help is a kit kat ROM as they have been optimized for phones with 512mb memory. Tweaks are mainly a placebo as @ArtfulDodger found out for us through extensive testing.

I tried both of those links before I posted this. All download buttons on those pages led to spam ads. Seems every comment on those pages is how do I download - and then a mysterious thanks as if the answer was revealed and then deleted. At one point I got a link on that page to go to a page that said no file found - missing or deleted. Just tried again and found one download button that actually worked.
The system memory on my Exhibit 4G is just about full and there is 1.07 GB of system memory. The internal USB/SD memory is almost empty as is my external SD card. What I need to do is free up internal memory - and deleting apps that will not install to Internal USB/SD memory that I don't use has freed up a small amount of that system memory. But there are some apps that will not install to internal SD and insist on sitting in system memory. And then there are the screen after screen of apps that Samsung shoved on this phone that keep updating constantly and 80% of those apps I have never used. So researching this the recommendation always seems to be root and dump the bloatware - and have the ability to swap External SD for Internal SD. So I am looking to root. I have found Clockworkmod on some other site and just got the stock-rom.zip.
Thanks for responding - hopefully if I do this it I won't get notices to delete apps or the phone will cease this function and that function.
So after I root every app on the phone that I installed will still be there and the only difference is the phone will be rooted. Just asking because one video showed an empty phone other than stock apps after rooting.
Ok, then what you are more looking for may be swap sd since your on stock. It may be a hastle shifting things around. In the long run a lot of people chose to use this feature to have quite a few apps. I never personally used the feature as I never load many apps on my phone. So you would do the following.
1. Flash rootstock.zip
2. Flash cwm.zip
3. MAKE A BACKUP!!! (sorry but I need to stress this point as it will save you tons of headaches)
4. Install/flash swapsd you'll have to search for it as its buried in the thread
5. Shift non system apps/data to your memory card (new internal)
6. Enjoy
Hope the info helps.

rooting alone will not touch any of your data. It just gives you full permissions to your phone.
however, I HIGHLY recommend you put a custom ROM on this phone. If you really want to get the most out of this phone, it is THE BEST way to go. I've owned this phone since it was first out and had so many problems with it on the stock ROM. I was seriously considering spending a lot of $$ on a new phone. Once I put a new ROM on it, its like a brand new phone. Everything is so much smoother. Just put your data on an SD card. If you sync your contacts with Google they will all sync back up to your phone. All your apps will be re-downloaded. Its a bit of a pain to set them all up again but soooo worth it.
After you make a backup, give it a shot. If you really don't like it then you could go back to the backup... but I doubt that would happen after you see just how well the phone runs.

Have you ever heard of towelroot? there is a website called towelroot.com, and i am not sure whether it still works, but you should try anyway. You click the lambda and it will download an app. You then install it and click the make it rain button, and you should be root. After that, download Supersu, and root checker. You should then be able to clear bloatware with a root browser.

Does anyone actually have android pay working on MM?

Im running truepure Rom. Would love to have android pay working, but just cant get it going. Assuming will have to live without for a while...
I have it installed on the stock rooted MM (soak test) and my card is loaded. I have not had a chance to actually use it yet. There aren't many retailers that accept it yet. If I get a chance to use it I'll report back.

As I understand, Android pay pretty much only works works with stock ROM due to system system Partition Modifications made on custom Rom's. I understand some devices have had limited luck with Custom Roms but for the most part, Stock only. All that said, I just upgraded to MM 6.0 on Friday and then Rooted using the Beta System less Root method from the forum and Android Pay works like a charm, added cards no problem and works perfect at the retailers that accept it. Most recently, RiteAid in my area. This root is not a full root as I understand but the apps I use get permissions without an issue , Quick Boot is my must have and it works just fine. (Did notice ES File Explorer wont' allow full access to my device but Root Browser did. Adding XPOSED would still disable Android Pay since it modifies the partititons , I really wish that was not the case but I really love Android pay so for now, I might just have to do without it. I am sure you saw the Root Method but just in case, the link is below. Follow the instructions carefully and don't forgot to hit the Do Not Install button in TWRP (Your device does not appear to be rooted) every time you reboot from there . You'll know what I am talking about as soon as you get to that point.
Anyway, good luck!
Mike

EDIT: And I broke pay somehow... So I guess this is not a great guide...
I am having Android pay working on a slightly modded stock rooted MM.
- I did the OTA process (back to stock and side loaded the OTA)
- Installed and setup Android Pay (including cards)
- Installed TWRP 2.8.7.1 in fastboot (link)
- Rooted with Chainfire's systemless autopatcher (link)
- Renamed system\recovery-from-boot.p to .bak in TWRP
- Installed No increased ringtone in TWRP (link)
- Installed and setup AdAway
- Android Pay is still working, I tested it at the vending machine at work.
I have not tried to add the new Google dialer (link), someone in the thread say it doesn't break Android pay.

- Installed and setup Android Pay (including cards)
- Installed TWRP 2.8.7.1 in fastboot (link)
- Rooted with Chainfire's systemless autopatcher (link)
- Renamed system\recovery-from-boot.p to .bak in TWRP
- Installed No increased ringtone in TWRP (link)
- Installed and setup AdAway
- Android Pay is still working, I tested it at the vending machine at work.
I have not tried to add the new Google dialer (link), someone in the thread say it doesn't break Android pay.

I have Android pay working here. stock MM and systemless root. I did try flashing the dialer zip and it did break Android pay. However I moved the required files into place using root explorer and set the correct permissions, and Android pay works no problem.
So it seems that flashing zips that modify the system partition in any way will break Android pay, but not if you modify it while in the OS itself. I've been using the cigital safteynet playground app to check each time I make a modification. Definitely make a backup of /system so you can always restore Android pay functionality if a mod breaks it.
Also using Xposed WILL break Android pay. I try not to miss it much, but honestly I've got my MXPE pretty much perfect for me, and what apps I use that require root are all working well with systemless root.

What does this do?

This prevent the stock recovery from overwriting TWRP
I actually have TWRP in read only mode, which allows stock to overwrite it, and the file ends in .p.
Will changing it to .bak allow me to remove the read-only status?

Any chance you'd be willing to elaborate on this a little? (i.e. which files, where and the correct permissions)
Thanks!

Well the flashable zip as the folder structure laid out inside it, so just use that to know where to move the files. Usually the permissions are rw-r-r in most folders, but just check other files in the directories to make sure what permissions to set. That's all I've done to get the dialer working at least. I imagine it works for other things as well.

That didn't work for me, I was able to install the 3.2 dialer just fine using root explorer, but it break Android Pay (Fail Cigital Safteynet Playground)
I try step by step install, testing with Cigital after every step, it fail when I copy the Google Dialer folder to pri-app. How did you do?

I followed the same steps that bb did and am getting the same results you are. Android Pay was working just fine with systemless root and Adaway, but so far, DPI changes and the Google Dialer have both broken Android Pay for me.
I lost it manually installing the new emoji font pack and google keyboard. I manually copied the files over and fixed the permissions.
I'm stock UK, but I keep getting a popup saying Android Pay isn't available in the UK

That's because it isn't but it should be coming to the UK in the next few weeks according to rumours.
