Hi I bought this phone few hours ago. After using it for a while (not heavy gaming, just browsing the options and stuffs), it gets extremely hot in the back. With a monitor app I can see that the temperature is about 45℃ . I'm on WiFi , mobile data and NFC deactivated. What it could be?
mostly its because its made out of aluminum which transfers the heat away from the internals. so it will feel hot but after a week or so it will settle down
I'm gonna wait few days and if the problem remain I will return it back. Now I'm charging it turned off and there's no overheating. Weird, what could it be?
Mine peaks at about 48degC when using navigation, or using hangouts for video call. Other than that, normal use is around 33-40degC and maybe 27-30degC from idle. Overnight its about 23-26degC according to Gsam.
It does get quite warm when you use it, but it also cools down very quickly due to the material.

Wow 48°C is very high! I think there's something wrong...
There's nothing wrong with that. It's all dependent on the user and his tasks. Devices with aluminum body are known to get hot rather quickly, and as mentioned earlier, it's because aluminum soaks up the heat away from the internals of the device (like the motherboard, processor and such) and therefore prolongs their lives. Plus, if you lay the phone down for like five to ten minutes it'll cool off quickly. I use the HTC Double Dip Flip Cover and I don't have to worry about that - of course it's not a viable solution since not all of us like cases, but it helps, plus I love the kick-up stand feature.

So you think it's normal that it gets very warm after few minutes of normal use?
Unfortunately, yes, that's how it is designed to be. I used a Galaxy S3 for quite a while and believe me, hot plastic isn't fun either, especially because it stays hot for a long time and doesn't cool off quickly, and also the internals of the S3 got hot as well (not just the body) which shortens their lives and also drains the battery fast. It's the same with the S4.

mine got very warm for the first week or so but i was flashing a new rom everyday and i still flash very often but it doesnt get as hot as it did when i first got it

Perhaps, but there aren't any software updates as far as I am aware; the only official OS is 4.1.2 at the moment. If you want to root and go for a custom ROM, I'd recommend either Android Revolution HD 10.3 (for a fully stock experience that's quicker and more stable than the stock ROM) or Trickdroid (which is basically also stock-like but has many nice tweaks and additions) - I have not experienced any overheating issues ever since I went for ARHD and then Trickdroid, but then again I only started taking note of this about a week after I bought the phone; you need to let it completely settle first and not judge so early.

Yes I'm gonna wait until Friday. Now I've turned off my phone to let him cool down. After I've turned it up, in few seconds it gets go 40°C (104°F). I've just turned it up!

I've had my One for a couple of months now and everything you've described has been normal for me. 48 is definitely at the high end of temps I've seen on the phone, but the battery and CPU are both capable of surviving that for short periods of time very easily. If you're really concerned you can install something like CPU-Z or CPU Monitor to track the CPU frequency in real time: if the phone gets too hot (by it's own standards) you'll notice the clock throttled to lower than 1.7gHz. If its not throttling, just enjoy the warm feel
Also, when you boot the phone up as you mention, it will of course warm up quickly because its doing a lot of working turning things on and setting up again. 40 is normal use temp for me.

Well that seems high rather quickly. I'd wait a couple of days and monitor the temperature levels and with which activity. If things don't get better, send it in for a replacement. I'd call HTC and notify them about this and see what they recommend doing in the time being. My average temperature is 25 degrees and with browsing and such it usually increases to mid 30s.

BTW, the quicker you drain the battery the quicker it heats up of course (for many reasons). I prefer my screen brightness at 90% and all services running all the time, which I suspect it's why mine runs at 40 while others may run normally in the 20s or 30s. What things/settings do you have going on right now?

90% brightness and a lot of background services will most certainly increase the temperature and drain the battery quicker. I have almost every service that I do not need hibernated by Greenify and the brightness set to Auto, even Auto seems too bright for me. That most certainly helps with battery draining as well as heating issues.
Just turn Power Saver on. You won't be missing the slower CPU speed cos the GPU speed is not reduced. Most games will still play perfectly well and you won't even notice any increased lag in any app. Go into the Power settings, click on the Power Saver word, turn off what you don't want then turn Power Saver on

Actually Power Saver mode slows my device down and the UI becomes a bit slower and a little less responsive but it's nothing annoying. In fact, whenever I miss my Galaxy I turn on Power Saver mode so I can experience the slower UI, but even then it is still faster and more responsive than TouchWiz. Haha!

My UI does not slow down even a little bit With Power Saver on I can still play Asphalt 7 at 60fps.
That's nice I suppose. I just turned it on for the sake of trying and you're right, the Ui is still pretty responsive and snappy. Perhaps I was talking about the One X and not this one. I am losing my memory. Lol

Im new here and fairly new to Android coming from the iPhone (I know....what was I thinking with apple?)..
I have the first HTC One for Verizon, I love this phone and generally don't have any problems with it. I have been testing out ROMs and have been pretty successful with them but the only problem I have is after steady use, maybe 15-20 minutes the phone gets hot. (not burning my hand hot..) But just out of concern for the phone, is this normal or is it damaging to the phone? I'd like to try to make this last the 2 year contract I just bought.

should be OK, the cover acts as heat sink, that's why you can feel the heat more than other phones. afaik, the max HTC specification temperature is 55C.
when the phone goes beyond specification temperature (eg using navigation in the car in sunlight while charging) the LED will start blinking red, and charging will be disabled to prevent damage.
EDIT: you could install an app to monitor temperature; GSAM can monitor batter & temperature
and if you use a lot of apps that use high cpu, you can think about installing a custom kernel with more "aggressive" thermal options

Oh thats good to know. Thank you for the reply. Brand new phone, I probably get a little paranoid but better safe then sorry. I will look into a custom kernel if I start to see that flashing red from overheating. Thanks again..

I've never had any problems. When running CPU intensive apps, my battery goes up to 45C but not more.
The hottest I've noticed it was using navigation in the car (but didn't check temperature as I was driving), but I almost never use that anyway.

Htc Does fell hotter than any other android phone , yes! cause its metal it conducts heat !! , i personally think its good that it conducts heat as it cools down at a better pace than any other phone..
Htc one feels nice on the hands in the winter.

Hahaha, up here in NYC that doesn't sound like such a bad idea. If I wasn't scared of blowing up my phone I'd attempt overclocking for extra heat.

I've found in the ROM I am running an app called Trickster MOD which displays all the temps and clock speeds. Staying steady around 40-45c depending on what I am doing. More toward 45c when playing games. I guess as someone said before, because of the metal casing you can feel the heat coming from the device. Thank you for your feedback everyone.

but sounds about right on the temperature, my phone also stays between 40 to 45C when using games or graphic/cpu intensive programs; i've had it since about march or april, and no adverse effects (so far?)
i almost never use navigation, but if you want to test temperature, try it, it REALLY heats up.

I use the Google Maps Navigation often cause I do alot of walking around NYC and I often get lost in my own city lol. Ive actually never noticed any feeling of heat higher then any other app. Then again I use it for short term walking, usually 20-30 minutes at most.

aahah in switzerland it's around -1°C ... so I don't need it actually.. but when I go to the mountains... with some extra batteries it's a D you know what I mean
I've searched around and couldn't find any good threads about this:
My note 4 (N910U) gets pretty hot when I'm playing regular games (Tsum Tsum, Wind Runner) and I'm thinking that this is what is causing it to lag.
I.e. When I start playing everything is super smooth, and then about 2-3 minutes in when the phone is getting hot, the frames start dropping and it lags pretty bad.
This happend with my note 2 as well. Is it normal or should I try to send it in to samsung somehow? (in which case does anyone have any experience with samsung customer service? I bought the note 4 from HK but I live in Japan :/)

My Knox is already turned off and theres been no real difference from before.
edit: Looks like setting it to force GPU rendere helps slightly overall (the sum off all things since some parts get much nicer some parts are the same, a few parts are laggier... )

Actually by enabling that option will affect your battery. Haven't done that on my Note 4 but tried that on my previous phone which is LG G2. Definitely it will be faster on rendering but it adds consumption on the battery. And also if the CPU is still overheating, the speed will still throttle down and still affects the applications that relies on CPU. Did you do any customization? If yes, incompatible kernel can be an issue also.

Try installing this application. This application helped me track the application that is hogging my phone which is the Knox on my case. Look for a process that has a high cpu usage.

For instance, Crossy Road lags after few minutes of playing, Ski Safari too, Subway surf....
No more buying Samsung s**t if this issue continues..
I feel sorry I sold my Note II, never had this problems with it.

Under clock it slightly. That will stop it reaching the temperature that throttles the CPU/GPU all the way down, but still keep good enough performance
The CPU's don't throttle very aggressively and work the clock speeds down fairly evenly so you won;t be able to manage it better yourself by underclocking.
the GPU on the other hand stock uses some pretty crazy throttle steps which knocks the clock speed way down in one step which is probably what most people notice while gaming. You can try fiddling with the max states to try and work it better, but if it gets hot enough to throttle then it will just settle down to it's base state of performance.
I do wonder what people expect when they states these things are 'issues' or it's 'Samsung ****'. Welcome to the world where phones are designed for burst performance only. The Power consumption of pretty much any phone SoC from the past 4-5 years is high enough that clock speeds will be dropping (way) down once you put any extended load on the device. There are SoC design choices that can help with this (very wide cores running at low clockspeeds/voltages) and process node improvements usually come with an increase of steady state performance but there is simply no getting away from the fact that phones can't maintain performance because they are just too small.
getting more performance when you're limited to maybe 2.5watts long term TDP is a challenge. Only way to actually improve it is to undervolt your device, which can help quite a bit if you can drive the voltages down by a decent amount.
OK, I would ask which flagship Samsung phone not older than 2-3 years throttles the least? I'm ready to swap it with Note 4.

The Note 4 probably runs the coolest. I have a N910F, it only heats up with very heavy games like Real Racing, the CPU generally stays cool though.
Maybe activate CPU Power Saving and Force GPU rendering to try balance out the heat and power? Thats what I would do.

The screen is great quality not as good as the galaxy s6 but it is close second. The speed is great on this phone i don't experience any lag. The camera to me isbetter than any phone out including the iPhone and galaxy s6. Battery life gets me thru a day...i take out off charger at 7 am and when i get home around 6:30 it's no less than 40% and thats with emails coming in all day, few calss, surfing the web and some game play. I dont have any heat problems unless im charging it and playing a game.

Great phone minus touch screen issues. Phantom touches are a nuisance. Especially while lying flat.
Below Average for High End Phone
My last phone was a Note 3 so this is what I'm comparing the G4 to. Had the G4 for 4 weeks now.
1. Heats up compared to the note.
--When using Waze for 80 mile trips the phone heats up like a frying pan.
--Never noticed any heat issues with the Note but always have a hot phone if using internet for longer than 5 min. with the G4 (to be fair I had a silicone case on the Note and never noticed any heat issues. Could have been the case not letting me feel heat?)
2. Battery inconsistant.
--With a 65% charge I used Waze for 1 3/4 hours yesterday and the battery was at 0% charge (turned itself off). Today had 70% charge for return trip using Waze and had 45% battery life left at end of trip. Note 3 was also unpredictable with battery life. Could go 2 days on lite usage and then other times with same usage would have 30% left at end of 1st day. I find that a re-boot usually solves the battery issue on both phones.
3. Screen
--G4 is nice for most tasks. Sucks when watching HBO-Go, Netflix.
--Note 3 had better blacks and much more enjoyable to watch movies on. (to sum it up, G4 is like watching a LCD TV & Note 3 was like a Plasma TV. I have both tv's at home and the plasma picture blows away the LCD tv's. Maybe just my preferance.)
4. Love the 2 tap to wake the phone and the rear toggle just feels right for one handed operation. Big improvement vs non LG phones.
5. Camera
--Not enough usage to do a complete comparison yet. So far the pictures and video look good on the phone but havent downloaded to the computer to compare with my Note 3 pictures yet. I have noticed that the 8x zoom on the G4 makes the pictures look washed out. The Note only had 4x zoom which looked great in day light. The G4 night/low light pictures do look better than the Note 3.
6. Sound.
Volume goes much louder on the G4(a plus). Speaker phone is better on the G4. Music is kind of tinny sounding if the volume is to high vs the Note 3.
7.Build quality.
The Note 3 feels like a better built phone. Note is heavier than G4 and feels more substantial. I do like the fact that the G4 is lighter and smaller than the Note. Easier to hold one handed and not as heavy in the belt holster as the Note.
That's it for now.
I've had no battery issues thus far, Waze or otherwise. Goes a longtime on a charge. But I'm not a heavy user. A glance here and there, 20 emails, 20 texts a day. No video watching.
You'd feel the heat in a silicon case. But mine was ugly on delivery. All kind of issues. I did a reset and that has cleared up most issue.
There are still some intermittencies with WiFi Calling (T-Mob). But usually a toggle of WiFi will fix that.
I like the build Q of my HTC M7 better as well as the stability. But this was a better deal, and unfortunately better featured, otherwise I would have taken a M9.
Perhaps next year there will be a M10 (or MX) and I'll jump.
But I think as phones become more sophisticated, the carriers get more boxed in by the manufacturers.
OBTW, fave feature is the Paste Bin of the G4. Very smart.
Simple use of the phone - browsing, instagram, google news, whatsapp, etc., the phone gets warm. Playing PUBG for 30 minutes, the phone gets a lot warmer, but never hot to the touch. The only way it stays cool is if I'm not using it at all. In comparison, my OnePlus 7 Pro stays cool all the time, except when playing graphic-heavy games.
Any setting I'm missing?

That's odd my s21 ultra stays cool barely warm when gaming
If you have the Exynos version of the phone, then that could explain the heat. But if you have a SD888 variant, then your phone will still get a little warm, but not quite as hot as the Exynos.
Using GSAT to check temperature levels, any light activity gets the phone to about 36C to 37C. I tried restarting the phone about 5 times in a row and it went to about 44C.

Anyway, I'm unsure of this, but I'm pretty sure that when a phone is booting up it generally creates a tiny bit of heat because it's just getting everything initially setup for that boot.
But yeah, just be glad that you have the SD version. If you didn't, it might be even hotter! And I agree that this phone still gets pretty warm - I just haven't done any temperature tests on mine. Either way, do you happen to be using a case on this phone? I'm a caseless phone user and my phone still gets warm when used for an extended period of time... So I have a feeling that some thicker, heat sealing cases might be turning these phones into toasters...

My exynos is cool.... And no im not a fanboy, had the note20 ultra exynos heater and sold it because of this **** chipset...

Coming from a OnePlus 7 Pro, the heat generated during light use is so noticeable that I had to install a temp monitor (gsat). No problems with previous phone.
I have the official leather cover on, it may contribute to the heat but it shouldn't be that much, I reckon.
I don't need hand warmers haha.

Please take a 10 minute 4K30 Video and say how much % battery it drained and if the phone got hot.
I also have the Snapdragon version and I'm not sure if what I'm experiencing is normal or not, but my phone gets warm often especially the aluminum on the top left opposite of the camera. I've been keeping track of the temperature and it seems like my phone is always operating around 33C - 35C on normal everyday use like browsing, instagram and youtube. When I use the camera it goes to almost 40C. These numbers are around 91F-95F and 104F respectively. I recorded a 3 minute video on 4k60 and that's when it hit around 40C. Really trying to figure out if I should do an exchange.

Exynos: Lost the same 5% as you reported, and phone got hot around the camera module. Temperature of surrounding environment was around 20-25 degrees celcius. The phone didn't feel especially hot in general otherwise (using a relatively slim case).
Losing 5% in 10 minutes means about 30% per hour. So one could record in 4K for about 3-4 hours straight? Is that really that bad?

Yes it's bad in my opinion. My S20+ (with the infamous/bad Exynos 990) lost 5% in 15 minutes 4K30 video recording and got barely warm.

Yes, that's what I thought. I'm coming from the S9+, and there were several issues with that too when it first came out, which were all fixed with subsequent updates.
Just curious, how do you find the recording in FHD60? That's been my default recording as I don't actually have any 4K monitors.

Just thought I'd update here - re-tested with the April update. Lost 4% in 10 minutes on 4K30 video recording this time. Heating not as bad, although that's simply guessing/subjective (I don't have a heatgun).

It's just natural to lose 4% in 10 mins of 4k30fps recording. You are basically using all the system resources when operating the camera - i.e. the CPU, RAM and storage all run at the highest. It's not just this device you test this on any device iOS included and the results will be almost the same.
