So the IR sensors on the phone, the ones that are on each corner of the phone and detect movement so that it lights up the active display. Has anyone noticed this? When i wave my hands over the bottom ones, the screen doesn't light up, but if i wave my hand over the top one, it does. Does this mean my bottom ones aren't working? It hasn't really been a real problem, and I'm exchanging my phone for a different color anyway, but wondering if other can recreate this or if it is actually an issue.
Should only take a quick wave of your hand over the bottom bezel of the phone to see if the display turns on. Someone please take a second to let me know.
You have to be a certain height above the lower sensors for it to activate. I have the same issue.
I also have to look at the screen just right to make the screen stay on. Many times it starts to dim while I am reading and I have to adjust the phone. I also have to wave fairly high up to turn it on.

I could be wrong but I believe you have to wave your hand completely over the display for it to function properly. So its not unintentionally turning on with every movement near it. The command is a hand wave over the display, not the bottom of the phone. So I believe its working as designed.

I can make it activate by waving over the bottom half, but only when I do it a few inches above the screen.

i can activate the sensors when approaching from the upper part of the screen.
But not from the lower half (sensors below the display).
when seen in very dark room i see all the sensors (upper two and lower two) light up red.
i know that when the upper part of the phone is covered ,the sensors don't work because if the proximity sensor senses dark then it means ur phone is in ur pocket.
should i get a replacement . (really worried)
i did reinstall the moto app, it didn't help.
My Moto X has the same issue.
Edit, covering the top sensor may make the phone think it is in a pocket. I can wave over the bottom of the phone with no response though.

There's nothing wrong with your phone- the "sensors" at the bottom are just flashers and the actual IR receiver is in the top of the phone, so if you wave your hand too close to the bottom the receiver won't be able to pick it up.
Only the top right one wakes the device on mine.
I really doubt it's the IR. I believe it's the camera waking the device.

Why would you doubt something that is explicitly stated by the manufacturer? The IR sensor's sole purpose is for gestures, one of which is to show the Active Display.

I don't think you have a problem. Try this:
If u simply wave at the top sensors, from any direction, the screen turns on.
For the lower sensors, try a bunch of different movements and you'll realize that when you reach for your phone (that means, moving your hand down and approaching the phone from the bottom part) the bottom sensors work.
My theory: the top sensors detect any movements, specially wave (from side to side) movement. The bottom ones detct the "reaching for" movement... If i remember correctly, the little demo you get inside Moto app tells you you can view notification by waving right above the screen or right before you grab the smartphone... isn't it exactly that which we are discussing?
Taking a shot in the dark here, but try going to the "Moto" app, hit the little gear icon top right and select actions. Then select "Wave to silence".
Now test it out, try swiping just above the top sensor (leaving the bottom sensors unused). Now try vise-versa (swipe across the bottom sensors while leaving the top unused). Notice how the wave action DOESN'T work when you isolate the sensors in this way. Now try swiping just above both of them with either your hand or with two fingers, one swiping the bottom and one swiping the top at the same time, you'll notice that DOES work. I think the only time all the sensors are used is for the action of waving to silence calls and things of that nature. When it comes to Moto Display and showing notifications, I'm pretty sure it's programmed to only use the top right sensor, as it wouldn't need three sensors to detect movement. Though I'm not sure why all three sensors come on when the display is off.

Can't really remember which ones.
Don't replace your moto X. He's fine.
I've noticed on mine, the bottom two are easily visible in the dark, whereas the top right is barely visible, and the top left isn't visible at all.
I'm not sure if this is affecting the performance or not.

i did. The top left one doesn't light up at all, unlike the bottom two. This leads me to believe it's non-functioning.

I don't have the required number of posts to insert a link, but I uploaded a clip on you tube so you can clearly see the problem (just type "weird light under glass incredible s" in the search bar)
I had to send my Incredible S in for repair because it stopped charging. That was fixed but then it wouldn't read my SIM card. I sent it back and that was fixed but now I notice this rapidly flashing reddish light (color looks different because of video quality I guess) that appears to be behind the glass near the top of the phone, slightly to the left of the "htc" logo. It is certainly not the LED; is it some other light I don't know about?!? This light come and go; it will stop if I turn the phone off but eventually starts up again. I called HTC and they had no idea and weren't allowed to access YouTube to look at the clip I uploaded. Any suggestions? There are no other problems with the phone but I don't want to ignore this if it's a red flag. If this is indeed a light indicating something, the only thing I can think of is that it is a "tech" light that only a specialist would recognize as meaning some internal part has to be replaced. There's no mention of it in the user manual.
That is the proximity sensor. Check whether you have any apps that is using the proximity sensor. ie. Pocket locker

That's definitely the proximity sensor!!! U can also see it normally during a call when its dark!!! Does your phone screen turn off when u cover that light??

as the others have said, that's the proximity sensor. It detects if there is anything near it, like when you put the phone to your ear when talking on it.
In the "talking on the phone case", if it detects something near, it will put the screen into sleep mode so you don't accidentally push buttons with your cheek or similar.
As am84496 said, something is using the sensor and checking for proximity.
Thanks for the responses. You're definitely right. I d/led "proximity sensor finder" and the light came on when the application was started and went off when it was closed. I don't know what application(s) used it before though. Is there any way to find out what application is using the proximity sensor at a given time? Someone suggested to me that it was a sensor and that it might have shorted out. But I guess that isn't likely right? And my screen didn't turn off when I covered it; it would only do that during a call wouldn't it?

My Note seems unable (or unwilling) to detect touchscreen contact within a relatively small margin of each edge.
Using the 'Pointer location' option in Developer Options, I can see that no matter where along the edge I put my finger, it seems to clamp it to 20px away from the edge. Taking the left edge, for an example, I can see the line tracking my finger up until I hit the margin, and then it will go no further left. It is still detecting the press, though, moving my finger up and down will result in a perfectly straight line being drawn parallel to the edge of the screen.
I'm using PA3 (RC3). Either the problem doesn't exist or I just didn't notice on stock. I only became aware of it when attempting to mess around with the new 'Pie' thing in PA, and realising that it's somewhat difficult for PA to detect the gesture when the edge of the screen isn't registering the touch!
I'd appreciate it if anyone could quickly check whether their Note has the same issue, or if anyone is aware of a way of expanding the area on which touches will be registered.

I wasn't sure to which app you were referring, but I found one that was able to fairly clearly show the issue. I took a screenshot and attached it to this post.
Each of those lines was drawn from or to the edge of the screen. You can see they all stop significantly before the boundary. The app is ScreenTouchTest, if someone would mind repeating the experiment and seeing what results they get!
Same thing happens with me. However, when using the S-Pen, the boundary gets to the right, ie the screen area increases. Here are two screen shots, one with finger and the other with S-Pen.

I honestly think it is far too sensitive. I just got my X today and I set it in my passenger seat to drive. The active display turned on about every 4 seconds because of the tiny bumps from driving. With the IR sensors turned on the display is turned on every time I set down my phone. I emailed Moto about making some kind of sensitivity setting. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't worry about it. It barely uses any power when it turns on because amoled. If it was an LCD screen, you bet I would be complaining

I'm not really worried about battery life so much as it just annoys me to see my screen constantly turn on. Well, partly.
I made it like the 2013 version. Shut off the hand motion sensors so now it only responds to movement of the device. MUCH better on battery
Active Display turns on as long as you have notifications, it's not road bumps setting it off.

I think you may be wrong on this, if you wave at the phone or move it a little bit the display will show you the time, even if there is no notifications, i too have this issue, i leave my phone on the dash and since the back of the phone is curved , it will tilt a little , enough to activate the display. No biggie, but just saying it happens .
If it had the option, my setup would be OFF Movement sensor, and ON (ir) gesture sensor . i see myself frequently waving at the screen to check the time, and now i do this thing where i dont use the wake button to unlock the phone while it sits on my desk, i make the display wake with my hand and unlock it..

2nd that, if I could turn off the movement sensor I would also. The gesture sensor works pretty great, the movement sensor is too sensitive.
Yeah, mine blinks on and off all the time regardless of notifications or not. Received an update the other day for the sensors and it didn't change anything.

I totally agree. IR only and no movement would be great. I have IR turned off right now and I wish it didn't annoy me to have both on. I paid for these fancy new IR sensors and I'm not even using them.

I know what you're talking about, the screen does flash if you have a notification. I can obviously tell I don't have one, just take your phone and tap the corner of it or set it on your couch and then sit down, your active display will turn on.

If you are worried about the phone activating the screen too frequently - I think having it upside down will prevent that. The active screen doesn't turn on when in a pocket, and I think that could also be said for being upside down on the car seat next to you.

Am I right in saying that there are four IR sensors on this device? I thought I saw one in each corner but lately, whenever I wave my hand over the bottom half of the phone, the screen does not light up.
Yes, if you want to see if they're all working, video record it with another phone or camera, you should see the IR sensors shining.

Where is the fourth? Mine only has 3. Bottom two corners and upper right. Mine also does not light up if I wave over the bottom, but I can see the sensors firing, they give off a bit of red light. It's pretty easy to see in the dark, even with a naked eye.
There is only 3 and they are visible with the naked eye. Top right, and bottom corners.

I seem to remember mine working when I passed over the bottom, but now it is not. I can also see them glow red, but they don't seem to work anymore. Did yours ever work?
They never go right. The actual light is invisible to our eyes. You see the red dots when you catch it in certain light. But that's the sensor itself not the light its producing

Yup. Maybe an update broke it? I know it worked when I first got the phone then I turned it off.
Edit: they do turn on when I approach the phone. So I know they work.
I hadn't took the update so that's weird, idk hopefully it will be figured out. I see the sensors light up so their working I just can't figure out what's going on, glad its just not my phone.

The red dots go on and off when you move across the bottom of the screen. It's definitely not the sensor itself, because if you hold it in the same angle, the light also goes off.
As far as the bottom of the screen, mine has never lit up my screen by reaching across the bottom. I think the bottom sensors work in conjunction with the gyro, so that when you pick it up it turns on, but the sensors themselves never turn on my phone. If I wave across the upper right one it will though. It's been this way on all 3 Turbos I've had.

The bottom sensors only work in a dark room for me. When the turn on they go bright then dim, and then they will sense my hand. Try it.
I never noticed it before, but two tiny red dots appeared on each of the bottom corners in the capacitative button area. It looked like some kind of led, but they were very dim. I tested it and it looks like they appear when the micro-usb is partially in. Has anyone else seem them or know what they are?

Yeah, your guess is spot on.
I do believe they are infrared sensors (hence why you can slightly see them in the dark as red-colored dots), and they are pulsing constantly to detect any reflection that would indicate an approaching hand.

Not in each corner actually. The bottom two and upper right. The 4th one is next to the proximity sensor and FFC. I saw it in a video posted on here before. Regarding the sensors that is.

Did not realize that feature was driven by IR sensors.
How do they tell the difference between an approaching hand, and being pressed up against your leg in your pocket?
The software is able to detect whether or not it is in your pocket based off of either the light sensor, IR sensors or possibly a combination of the two.

I believe "Pocket mode" is determined principally by the "proximity sensor" - the same sensor that determines when the phone is against your cheek during a phone call and turns the screen off. When pocket mode is enabled, the "active display" is disabled, so it doesn't display notifications when it is in your pocket. I believe the pocket mode also disables the ir sensors, so it isn't trying to determine if you are reaching for your phone.

Correct. Cover the proximity sensor and give it a try. Shake the phone and wave your other hand, it won't turn on.

OK, still, what do the 3 red lights do, if you cover the proximity sensor, yes the screen won't turn on. But, the lights still light up and wont activate. They obviously aren't there to activate the screen, so what are they?
