Battery draining while on WiFi - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Take a look at what is happening to my battery while on Wifi below. This keep-awake only happens when on WiFi. I tested it yesterday by being on LTE all day and got 20+hours with 40% battery left. Today it will be drained in half that. Having WiFi on seems to keep the phone awake and it drains steadily in the background. I have keep wifi on during sleep off so I'm not sure what is up.

Try disabling Smart Network Switch. It should be located under WiFi settings.

ever figure this out?

Wifi does tend to use more battery and have more wakelock

Thread moved to Q&A as the OP was asking for help.

Apps will usually sync more often if they see that you are on WiFi.

is there to make the phone NOT scan for new networks once you have connected to a wifi network?

You have Always Allow Scanning unchecked, right?

Sure I get that, but since when is battery life on LTE 5x better than when in WiFi? It's always been the opposite for me.

Tried turning off Wifi based location services?
Under Settings --> location.
Since you have Wifi location services off when Wifi is off, could explain the difference in wake locks.
Location services feed into a lot of other services, like Google Now, which ramps up the more data it gets.

I am having the same problem, more consumption with wifi on than mobile data, did you find a way to fix this?

Same here. Any news?

Turn off smart switch to prevent hopping thru frequencies, turn off using wifi in location, turn off keep wifi on during sleep.

That is off by default.

Same issue here..
Almost 200mb via 3G and 2GB on wifi.
It was done during the 1st week after flashing JB, it did the same after flashing another JB ver.
Hmm I never had this issue...1.5 GB for one month is a lot! Looking at the graph I think some app or data was downloaded in one instance (looking at the vertical leaps). And this was repeated at least 3 times within the month. Judging from the leap sizes the downloaded content was about 150-200 MB?
I am having this issue as well, the difference is that in my phone takes 8-10 megabytes per day. Using the better battery stats this is what I found
Do you have any idea what can I do?
Thanks

My phone seems to have this problem to, android system seems to be using high volumes of data but I think it's doing it of a night when my phones in flight mode I have no apps running or widgets and so far within a few days 20% of my monthly data has gone
Does anyone have any ideas as to what this can be?

Just disable back up my data, i'ts under back up and reset in settings.
Mine uses very little, don't use wifi very often though. Have a 2gb data plan and wifi in the house is poor
Same here. Every rom has crappy battery life with data on. A lot of wakeups. On wifi everything is ok. Probably a ril problem, maybe some devs will figure it out.

I don't have the high android OS usage anymore but i still have crappy battery life with 3G on. Last night i worked 3 hours, didn't use my phone and it went down 10% o.o. Every forum has the same answer: 3G is a batterysucker, but this wasn't the case with my Xperia Arc and my Nokia e71, those phones gave me a great batterylife on 3G. I really hope someone can find a solution for this, because now i can never make it through the day with 3G, while with wifi i can make it through two days.
I posted a thread on Original Development area. Please post ideas there. Thank you!

[Q] Lt25i Xperia V - battery drain issue

Hi all,
I am new to this forum...just quickly asking if there is any Lt25i user on this forum having the same issue with the battery. I've been using it for about 8 months with a stock rom (4.1.2, all updated). It is good device in generally apart from the battery which drain itself in about 8 hours or 9 hours of normal office worker use (you know, reply 20 or 30ish msgs or a couple calls total 30 mins tops, play around during lunch time, on a HSPA+ network, not LTE, about 20 apps installed on the device and no games at all).. and sometimes you can see the battery percentage drops down by one or two percent when you have been whatsapping continuously for about 10 mins..That's so much quicker than the other phone that I have (Galaxy S4). any one experiencing the same issue? what would you recommend? I am planning to flash the rom but not entirely sure which to choose. Your response is appreciated.
Ray
Youre not alone buddy. Although to many causes frustrations, if I'm just texting (whatsapp) I just leave it on Edge, or disable mobile data when im not using the phone. It's when I'm surfing the net that I'll leave it on HSPA+.

A lil battery optimization even on this 'tiny' battery by 2014 standards could have gone a long way.

To be quite honest, 5.5 hours of screen on is pretty darn awesome for any Android phone except behemoths like RAZR MAXX or Galaxy Note models.

However, with HSPA+ always on I can only get around 3.5-4 hours SOT at 15 plus hours on battery. The OP should install BBS and check what eats his battery on the background. 8 hours is pathetic.

Battery life question

Sup guys I have been having issues with awake time. While I'm still getting good batter life I'm thinking it could be better if I figure out what's keeping my phone awake. Well today I was in a not so great service area for most of the day and I see my awake time coincides with the bad service area. When it goes green the phone sleeps when its yellow it is awake. Is this a known thing for bad service to keep the phone awake? I know it searches for signal and burns more battery but I did not know if it should be awake. Thoughts?

Are you rooted? I doubt its just from radio. Something is constantly waking your phone. But you need gsam or wakelock detector to show you what is waking the phone. Without root, its not so easy to find out tho.

And no, that is not good battery life. For the amount of screen time it seems you have there, the battery should still be at 50 or 60...or more, percent.

No I'm not rooted and would rather not. I just shut off Google now. Gonna see what that does. Never use it anyway
But do you see how the awake happens when I go into yellow or worse signal. Is that weird or what?

It actually seems pretty consistent to me, green or yellow.
Its probably an app or service. Without root, very hard to track down.
Try turning off gnow, location services completely off, in Google settings app...uncheck both options in android device manager.. And then turn off sync completely in your Google account settings....and see how it is then. If it still happens, its an app for sure. You'll have to track it down by process of elimination. If all that stops it, then turn things on one at a time....with a few hours in between...until you catch the culprit.
Good luck!!
Great I will do that. Thanks man

This is a KitKat thing, not something by Sony. It helps a lot with Google Now, but with the tradeback of worse battery life.

Must be something like 10-20 minutes, lol.
Regarding "always scanning", I dont think it's something that uses alot of battery. Probably even more battery friendly than other "location" services. Just because it labels WiFi as always on, doesnt mean it uses as much battery as actually being connected to a network. Personally, I don't care for all this location nonsense so it's obviously off. Regarding the location-based wifi, it's only smart if you don't know how to toggle WiFi when leaving your house, etc.

No probs Bloodsucker !... Screen on 13% of 34 hours = 4.5 hours..This is my everyday day phone.I would consider myself to be a light-medium user , I dont play games used for voice calls ( 5-10 calls), text messages, used as a time piece (checked every 1/2 hour or so), 2 weather apps constantly updating as I move around a lot, GPS always on , bluetooth always on, maybe 1-3 youtube vids a day..screen turns of after 1 mins inactivity...
Running existenz 1.5.5 dark edition on a locked bootloader.. using Next launcher 3D and a live wallpaper...
hope that helps ..

The phone maxes around 5-6, MAYBE 7 (I've never come near that though), hours of screen on time in total.
The 13% means that 13% of the battery used going from 100% to 72% was from the screen.
Tap "screen" in the list of battery usage and it will tell you how long it has been on.
This one's mine... ca. 70% brightness:

there's no such thing. its your personal use and your signal quality that determines your battery life.
Is this how people are pushing 7 hours on screen time? I dont get how they do that. I have to atleast charge my device 2x a day in order to make it through the day.
