Hangout notifications not working - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone having a problem with Hangouts? I am not receiving notifications when someone tries to chat with me. SMS come through and notify fine, but Hangout messages do not load or notify until I open the app.

Not had that problem, but Hangouts will force close on me from time to time until I clear it's cache or reboot the device. I really wish it wasn't an uninstallable system app.

I don't receive a notification if I'm on data unless I go into the app. I only get it when on WiFi. I had the same issue on my nexus 5 though.

Facebook Messenger problem?

Hi all,
I have an issue with the messenger app from Facebook.
The issue is; it only seems to work on 3g, but not WiFi.
When on 3g it works fine, receives push notifications, sends messages etc..
But on WiFi messages are received, but at the top of the app it hangs on the orange bar that says "connecting". I can't send messages, or receive push notifications, but weirdly enough I can receive messages. Can anyone explain what's causing this? All other apps receive push notifications and work as they should on WiFi.
Yes I have tried reinstalling and clearing data and all that.

No Hangouts SMS notifications

Is anyone else having trouble with hangouts not giving notifications about 50% of the time? I keep missing SMS messages because they just appear in Hangouts later but I never receive a notification and the LED doesn't blink. Hangouts is the default messaging app.
Running stock latest kitkat...
Mine has been messed up ever since the video phone feature update. Calls just drop or are never made. Hang out messages are not seen or heard. It is a little irritating.

Android N SMS problem

Ok I had this before on my nexus but cannot remember how I fixed it.
I get an sms and it shows in notification but when I open the sms there are no text in the message. It just disappears.
And it happens in Hangout and Messenger.
What's the main sms process ? Want to see if I force stop and clear data if it will fix the problem
Thanks Rudolph
Does anybody know why this happens? I have the same issue but am not sure how to fix it.
Would really appreciate the help
Same issue here. Nexus 6 on Android N.
I have Hangouts as the default messaging app.
When I receive a text message, a heads up notification pops up but when I open hangouts the message is gone.
I also tried to switch to the Google Messenger app. In this case I can receive texts but I cannot send them...
Textra seems to work fine but it's not my cup of tea...
Anyone knows how to fix this, please?
Now it's getting even weirder.
It looks like whatever SMS I delete in Hangouts or Messenger gets restored after I close and reopen the app...
It looks like that whatever I do in Messenger or Hangouts goes nowhere and does nothing.

This is why it is an alpha build and not really meant for day to day use.
Same issue here.
I searched old threads, and found there is a solution, just reboot to safety mode, and send a sms to yourself. Then reboot to normal...
However, it doesn't work for me.
I have just found what may have caused the issue (at least in my case) and it was entirely my fault.
I basically dirty flashed the N alpha on top of my previous 6.0.1 installation where I had made quite a few changes, instead of doing a clean installation.
That plus the fact that some SMS/MMS things have now changed in M (for example the telephony databases are no more stored in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony but are now under /data/user_de/0/com.android.providers.telephony ) may have messed up my system.
I've now done a clean installation and all seems to be fine with SMS in Hangouts for the time being.
Other small annoyances (mainly related to the cellular data connection) also seem to be gone now.
The SMS issue reappeared after some time (i.e. Incoming text messages are shown in notifications but they are not saved in Hangouts or Messenger).
After having done all sort of different tests, it looks like the issue may be related to a language setting.
The Android N alpha allows you to set two languages under Settings > Language & input > Language.
- With just one language enabled, all is fine.
- With 2 languages enabled, Hangouts and Messenger seem to work ok for some time, then the disappearing-SMS bug comes back. The only workaround I could find is to disable the second system language and reboot the phone.

Major issue with delayed push notifications

I have been experiencing delayed notifications on my Note 9, mainly with Facebook Messenger, but it applies also to the Line messenger app and Outlook, so it's not confined to one app. It's probably just that I use Messenger often, so notice it more with Messenger
The symptoms are a random and sometimes very long delay between sending a message and receiving a notification, measured in minutes to hours. Sometimes, I'll receive a bunch of notifications from multiple apps when opening the screen.
Other times, even opening the screen does not cause me to receive notifications. I can be actively using the phone and there will still be a random delay on notifications.
For example, I was using my phone earlier to web browse and my girlfriend sent me a message. I did not get a notification. After 30 minutes, she called and asked me why I was not reading her message. Opening the messenger app, I saw the message there (as well as the time at which it was sent) and about one minute later the notification came in.
Similarly, I can be using the phone and someone will video call me on Messenger. I don't get a notification until I actually open the app (I know this since my other phone that has the Messenger app installed on it rings, so I know I have an incoming call).
I can test notification delay by using one account from a computer to send a message to the account linked to my phone, so I know exactly when the message was sent. But the notification delay, even while using the phone actively, is still present and measured in minutes to hours, whereas the other phone receives the notification immediately.
It is NOT doze mode at fault. I have explicitly disabled ALL battery optimizations as well as turning off doze mode with ADB at boot time.
It's not bluetooth, even though some users in other threads have pointed to bluetooth being at fault.
I have cleared cache, uninstalled all updates for Google Play Services and Google Play and reinstalled them.
The phone itself seems capable of receiving push notifications correctly. I can use the push notification tester app to setup a high priority notification for, let's say 10 minutes from now. Then I shut the screen. After 5 minutes, I send a message to my phone with Facebook Messenger. No notification is received for this message.
After 10 minutes, the Push Notification Tester app triggers its notification correctly, which is received immediately. And then shortly afterwards, the notification comes in from Facebook Messenger.
Clearing cache and data on Messenger doesn't make any difference, and as I said in the first paragraph, it does not appear to be the app, since other apps are affected.
This is driving me crazy. I miss out on messages and important emails.
Is anyone aware of any solution to this problem? I just see a whole bunch of snake oil remedies on the net, but no real solution.
It appears to be something that might be related to notification priority, judging by the behaviour of the Push Notification Tester app, but this is just speculation on my part

Question Origin OS Ocean Google Messages

I have debloated my phone and replaced the Chinese apps with Google apps. Notifications work without any problem. I knew going into this that I wouldn't be able to use Android Auto, Google Backup, and 'Hi Google' voice activation for Google Assistant, but I've run into a snag with the Google/Android Messages app. I can send and receive text messages, but when I try to send a picture it just says "sending" and I eventually get a system notification that my message could not be sent. This happens whether I have RCS Chat enabled or turned off in the Google Messages app settings. In both the Google Messages settings and my Vivo system settings I have enabled "allow MMS messages". I know that MMS uses Mobile Data only, so I tried sending a picture with the phone's WiFi turned off thinking the phone was trying to send the pictures by WiFi rather than Mobile Data, but they still won't send. I have installed an uninstalled the app, gone into Recovery Mode and cleared the cache partition, but the problem persists. If I reinstall the default Vivo Messages app the pictures send instantly. Can anyone think of a reason why I can send SMS but not MMS in Google Messages?

Hi Craig. You know that I face the same problem. One of my friend is working in Vivo France. I contacted Vivo China to expose the problem with google message. They find something and they told him that they are going to push an update soon with a patch for google message. ✌✌✌✌✌✌
Thank you for staying on top of this!
