I just bought a N1 recently, and am loving it. However, this one issue bugs me to no end.
During calls with my girlfriend, she always complains of my voice being too soft, as if I'm talking from far away. The only solution I've found so far is to cup my hands in front of the mic, or to just speak louder. This is annoying, as I never had this problem with my ancient Sony Ericsson K750i.
I've been looking for an app/way to increase my microphone gain, to no avail.
So..
1. Does anyone else have this problem?
2. Is there a way to increase microphone gain on the nexus one?

I bet this may be a hardware problem, maybe one of your two Mics is not working. I don't have any issues, and I've even left myself messages to hear the phone's sound quality, and its very clear.
The only time I experienced what you describe is when I use the wired head set and the wire is not plugged in all the way which makes the Mic fail. Then it sounds exactly like you said, which makes me very much think its a broken Mic hardware.

Thing is, it's not that i'm VERY soft, just a little too soft for good hearing. If i make it a point to put the mic as close to my mouth as i can it's alright.
The wishful side of me is adamant that it's a normal problem, and just a little extra mic gain would solve it prettily. Now all I need to do is find that app.
RMA-ing the thing isn't the nicest of solutions, because i live in Malaysia, and HTC Malaysia doesn't support the phone. I'll have to get it sent to HTC Singapore, and do the necessary there. No joy.
If you guys have a lead on what to look for I'll be most thankful. =)
There is no thing you're looking for, and it's not a "normal problem", this problem shouldn't exist. The problem is most likely in dual-mic noise-canceling setup, as RogerPodacter wrote above. The only thing you could try is cancel the noise cancellation:

Yeah I don't know then. Like I said, I've plugged in my wired headset so it was not all the way inserted, which disables one or both of the Mics or something. And people say I sound like I'm in a tin can or like really far away and faint. When I push the plug all the way in it returns to normal.
So the first thing I thought of was a problem with the Mic. However only you can tell if you think its your low voice. Maybe you can try leaving yourself a few voice messages at various distances from your mouth then listen to them yourself and judge the quality to see what's going on.

It may be a microphone issue - my first N1 had problems with the microphone where the other party on the line would only hear digital noise or it would be inaudible what I was saying.
BUT I am now on my 4th replacement and something that everybody, who I talk to on that phone, agrees with is the bad sound quality / microphone quality on the phone. They all say that I am really far away as or it sounds like I am speaking into a tin can. This is across all 4 replacements.
If I use a different phone, they will say "ugh what happened, I can suddenly hear you as if you are standing next to me"
Funny, just about any Nexus review on the net, and just about any of my colleagues using it, are saying the opposite - the call clarity and sound on the other side is excellent, especially in noisy areas, where noise cancellation kicks in. I guess they're all blinded by some kind of group mind control...

When you're on the phone, make sure that you're not covering up the hole for the mic near the camera.
I've noticed that when I have to use my shoulder to temporarily hold the phone up against my ear, the mic will rub up against my shirt, totally screwing up the noise cancellation. I've been told that when I hold the phone that way that it sounds like I'm talking through a towel.
Maybe you hold your phone weird?

That explains why I can't seem to cradle the phone on my right shoulder. If what you said is true, then cradling the phone on my left shoulder should work fine. I'll try it out. Thanks Erikakaz!
On the microphone issue, I think it's because the way I held the phone when it happened might have placed the mic too far from my mouth. Perhaps the ANC thought my voice is background. I'm now holding the phone tilted during calls, so that the mic's closer to my mouth. (The mic is off center right?)

Personally i find it a bit weak compared to my older phones
When it vibrates unless i'm next to it, i wont even hear/feel it
if i leave it at the coffee table, and i'm working at the room next door, no doors, i wont even know a phone or message came through.
Speakers are super good, i can be on the far end of the house/office, and still hear it from the other end
I am fairly sure you are not intended to hear the motor, its supposed to be for silent alerts in your pocket. I realise most are audible but pretty sure it is not the actual idea.
Feel it though, yeah I find it pretty strong when it is actually receiving a call on my belt holder, not so much for haptic feedback. I think it feels quite "tight" compared to previous phones too, it really seems to be sharp start and finish motor wise and I can only really refer to the feeling as "bouncy" which I quite like.
There are of course stronger ones out there, but this is a pretty slim phone.
The loudspeaker though I am seriously disappointed by, it is ok when open but I can nearly silence it with a single finger over the opening on the case, so when it is in a pocket outside I find it to be pretty useless. It is also easily muffled if left ontop of a slightly soft surface.
The Motorola Milestone was super loud by comparison, and the audio quality of the Milestone was simply superior in all cases - I miss that aspect. Apparently a lot of Droid owners had audio problems but I think that was less of a case with the Euro firmware.
no, i was not refering to loud "motor" rather when the vibration shakes the phone and it rattles on the desk, it doesn't rattle loud enough.
compared to Treos or BlackBerries i've used in the past
I realised but I think did not reply very well. I just can't think of a better term than tight for the motor though, it seems to be quick and sharp which I feel against my skin quite easily but is perhaps too quick to allow for much up/down motion against a hard surface. It sort of feels more like a buzzing of an electric shaver to me.

yeah, exactly that's how it feels and sounds when placed on a table
it doesn't produce enough vibration to make a noticeable sound

Yes, a little bit, then I carry on talking and the other party manages to cope. I was assuming my case may play a little part in the problem, even though there is a small pin hole where the mic is.

Yes it's the same flip case. hmmm. I wonder if there is a way of improving it.
funny I dont get this even though the case covers the mic at the bottom of the phone.
I mentioned on another thread that there is a fault with every double dip flip case. The mic hole doesn't line up with the mic properly!

The thing is I can see that the hole perfectly lines up with the hole from what I can see.

Which case you guys are talking about? The plastic cover which have 3 parts? Or the black flip case wich can let the phone stand up in landscape mode?

The case I am referring to with the issues is the flip case and NOT the one with three parts.
But im not even using a case right now, but im also getting people saying they can't hear me that good, sounds great on my end though.

Try to record your own voice with inbuilt recorder app than play and see. Check if you have case which covering Mic? Try to see if any residuel trap inside the mic hole try to use vaccume cleaner to suck from both Mic. Or try to talk with customer service number and talk very softly and ask if operator can hear your voice properly?, restart the phone and do the same and check if anything improved? Try to record your voice using camera and check. Hope this all step help

I'm having the same problem, I have narrowed it down to being the bottom mic, When in a call, using speaker phone the back mic is on and people can hear me. When headphones are in again, people can hear me, again though the back mic. But when I take out the headphones, and turn speaker off, people can't hear me, unless I'm talking directly into the bottom mic, but words get cut short. Hearing what it sounds like I'm thinking it's noise canalization going on..

Having the same exact problem. Using the voice recording app - the volume of a recording using the bottom mic is woefully low compared to using a headset to record.
When using the speaker to answer calls - doesn't exibit this behavior as bad due to the other external mic.
Everyone that is calling me is complaining that they can barely hear me and I think it has nothing to do with the carrier, but all to do with the phone.
My partner's phone is also doing this. Every time she answers a call the other person can't hear her and she almost has to yell. She does have the HTC Genuine case but I've tested calls without this on and still the same thing.
It is the Silver 32GB HTC One ordered through Handtec.
I guess you're talking about the official case which can hold up the phone like the case comes with GSIII ?
I saw two thread complaining the same issue in another forum. However, I have a similar case (but not THIS case) and don't have this problem.

e: it was a noise cancellation + hole blockage deal for me. seems alright now
I just tested mine and I can hear myself loud and clear.

I have had other people tell me they can hear me, and I would move the phone and then they would say I'm perfectly clear.
I'm talking moving it a couple inches farther from my mouth. But then speakerphone works fine. I happen to believe it's cancellation taking us out as well.
Hope someone on here can help me; I've searched everywhere can could not find a solution. The technician who worked on the phone for over 10-15 hours over 1 month looked at me in despair and said "I have no clue"; I thought he was going to start crying.
Everything but the camera worked perfectly before the technician opened the phone to start working in it a month ago. It went downhill from there.
Sequence of events
1. Had a camera problem (constantly out of focus) on my US HTC One Dev edition that started 6 months after owning the phone, which I absolutely loved. Searched and found this was a hardware issue.
2. I'm in Canada with a US phone, so no warranty. HTC wants $200 and 3-6 weeks to fix it. Local shop wants $75. After asking if they knew how to fix this specific phone and that they had the tools, I leave it with them.
3. They installed the new camera, damaged my top speaker grille and phone side, and the screen is uneven (technician: worst phone I have ever seen to repair) If you want an idea of the process have a look at the ifixit website.
4. I order top grille for replacement ($10) from ebay. I realize the screen is has not been properly installed and after 2 days I have a purple dead pixel.
5. I leave for a trip with my family over the Holidays - I start taking photos in low light, guess what? Damn purple issue starts. The new camera was an omnivision from a bad batch (pre-Nov 2013). Fortunately, as a true geek I brought another camera with me, just in case.
6. I order a new camera myself from etradesupply $30 plus $20 shippling = $50. 2 more weeks go by.
7. I receive the grille and get the phone back to the technician, he puts it back together, but the grille won't bend and stick to the phone.
8. New camera arrives and Iget the phone back to the technician to install it, which he does.
9. I come back to pick up the phone - screen is all pixelated and dies shortly thereafter.
10. Technician proposes to swap screen from a bricked One he has from another customer. I hesitate, but agree; just want a working phone already. Donnor phone is pretty much destroyed in the process.
11. Back at the shop to pick up my phone: everything finally looks great. I realize back home that the sim card cannot be detected, and that the speakers make a bad creakling noise when volume is higher than 8 or 9 or at normal levels during a phone call
12. Back at the shop - he fixes the sim card issue (pooly connected wire), speaker issue remains and we have no clue where it's coming from. That's were we are at.
Lessons learned for both of us:
The HTC One is a fantastic phone...until it breaks.
technicians should refuse to repair the HTC One, it's almost guaranteed that they will damage something
I should have sent the phone to HTC for 4 weeks paid $200, pay $100 for a loaner phone and be done with the problem...

Questions
1. Speaker worked perfectly before the technician swapped the screen and reassembled the phone. It's kind of odd that both speakers started having the same issue at the same time. Is it worth trying to replace the speakers with new ones?
2. Could it be interference from something that was not properly put together?
3. Should I use the phone as a hammer, throw it as far as I can from the top of a 30-story building, in a river from a dam, put it in a bucket filled with fuel, or tie it to a propane tank and shot a bullet into it?

Wow.. Just wow... Looks like your speaker grills haven't been put in properly.. Did he replace only the LCD or the LCD+front housing?

Most likely a bad speaker placement. It sounds to me that the "technician" didn't place the speakers properly and it probably is now always in contact with the aluminium grills. That will cause weird audio creaking noise as the speaker vibrations are vibrating the aluminium grills as well. That's why if you press on the speaker grills, it will stop that extra vibration from the speaker grills. Beats Audio will just make more vibrations in the speakers and worsen your problem.
I suggest you find another "technician" because the one you went to is clearly stupid.

He replaced the full front housing to make sure we would not have problems fitting the speaker grills again.

Sounds like you are on to something. I got a similar answer on ifixit where I posted the issue.
Will get the guy to open my one up again and make sure the speaker is properly in place before ordering a new one. These suckers are $2, but shipping from HongKong is $23!

Hi Zero, probably should start a new thread for this, but I've noticed this in all the Ones I've seen. What happens is the Upper speaker has good amounts of bass and treble but very low midrange. On the other hand, the lower speaker has good midrange, okay bass, and lacking treble. That's exactly why it sounds uneven. Can you please make a mod to solve this?
For anyone interested in an update - the issue doesn`t come from vibration on the grilles. There is a small rubber around the speaker to prevent that and we doubled it to see if it makes any difference. It doesn`t. We realized that the noise was coming from some kind of short circuit whenever we pressed the daugther board along the top of the phone (we could hear a small buzz each time we pressed it). Next stop = electronics technician...

Hello mate ! Sorry for asking this question, as this thread was started long ago. How does it perform now ? Do you regret that your device has been repaired ? Is this happening only when placing calls through your carrier or also when placing whatsapp and facebook messenger calls?
you probably got some of the Whitestone adhesive leaked into the earpiece speaker and then dirt/dust clogging it up, several people reported same thing happening, some careful cleaning with pure alcohol and wipes should sort it

I only call through my carrier, and I notice how weak it was when the dual speaker mod sounded a bit odd

Well.. it " leaked INTO the earpiece " how would alcohol clean the inside?

Sorry for talking first, reasearching later.
So ive made a search about this and what you said was exactly what they did.
chancces are it is just a little bit and it hasn't leaked deep into it but basically just covering the earpiece and clogging it up, give it a shot, you have nothing to lose anyway

After alchol drys. Run speaker cleaning app. They have them in play store. Similar situation happened on 1 of my old phones. The app helped after cleaning out with alcohol.
I had low volume on the ear placed speaker, tried all of the various tricks.
Only way to get my volume back was compressed air

Ok heres the scoop on low note 8 earpiece volume. i moved up from a note 5 and could barely hear my calls. i looked at note 5 earpiece and holes are open. i looked at note 8 and found the holes are covered with aluminum---no open holes??? i used a magnified reader to see them. i used a pin and gently open 6 holes across the speaker again useing magnifier i could see the holes open. guess what? i had to turn the volume down!!! i don,t know if that aluminum cover was supposed to be removed at assenbly but the note 5 has nothing shiny on the earpiece speaker. i am now a happy camper and no longer hae to use my bluetooth earpiece.: CAUTION don,t need to push on pin hard just put it there and twist it a bit u will feel it move.
Well, maybe you punctured a water seal, I would be very careful about moisture and splashes, not to say submerging the device
I had the same issue with my note 8 I bought. The ear piece was more of a brown color than black so I knew it was clogged with dust or something. I took it to a professional and they said they would have to replace the entire LCD screen since the speaker was linked into it. They told me it would cost $280 to replace it. I told them to basically piss up a rope and I left. When I got home I used gorilla tape and put it over the mesh speaker and pressed it in with the end of a screwdriver just enough to get it touching the mesh..not hard. Pulled it off and did this a couple more times. The speaker mesh looks brand new and I hear perfect now. So try that.

Ok heres the scoop on low note 8 earpiece volume. i moved up from a note 5 and could barely hear my calls. i looked at note 5 earpiece and holes are open. i looked at note 8 and found the holes are covered with aluminum---no open holes??? i used a magnified reader to see them. i used a pin and gently open 6 holes across the speaker again useing magnifier i could see the holes open. guess what? i had to turn the volume down!!! i don,t know if that aluminum cover was supposed to be removed at assenbly but the note 5 has nothing shiny on the earpiece speaker. i am now a happy camper and no longer hae to use my bluetooth earpiece.: CAUTION don,t need to push on pin hard just put it there and twist it a bit u will feel it move.

You are a life saver man. I mean i thought i had to give my phone for repairing or replacing the ear piece. But your solution worked like charm. You deserve appreciation.:good:
You can use compress air to clean out the earpiece

I took it to a professional and they said they would have to replace the entire LCD screen since the speaker was linked into it. They told me it would cost $280 to replace it. I told them to basically piss up a rope and I left. When I got home I used gorilla tape and put it over the mesh speaker and pressed it in with the end of a screwdriver just enough to get it touching the mesh..not hard. Pulled it off and did this a couple more times. The speaker mesh looks brand new and I hear perfect now. So try that.

Been ages since I logged into this website. Had to do a password reset just to say Thank You. This worked like a charm. I had the low volume issue since a year but did not actually think of searching for a fix because I was using either loud speakr or headset. Thanks again. I was using the low volume as an excuse to buy a new phone which I wont now
