I'm trying to understand device encryption. If I encrypt my device, do I need to use an alphanumeric password each time I unlock my phone or only when it powers on? I'd rather use a pattern for regular use but am happy to enter a passcode on startup.
You have to use a PIN code as encryption is tied to the PIN code by default. With root, the boot password and PIN code can be set independently and the unlock PIN code can be replaced by a swipe pattern or nothing at all based on your location (using Xposed and the No Lock Home module for example).

How can I make it so when I enter my PIN, it automatically unlocks when I'm finished entering it? I find the extra keystroke of hitting that "enter" key annoying hundreds of times over
Laziness is not an option... The enter button is an important key feature in securing your phone... The enter key triggers a count for each pin input you do and having excessive incorrect pin input would cause your phone to lockdown.
Bummer....i know the iPhone doesn't require a press of the enter button and the option to bypass enter is on CM 10. Oh well....guess for the moment I'll just have to increase the period of time before a PIN is required. I wouldn't normally require a PIN but my corporate email requires it.
Sideloaded 5.1. When it reboots (tried several times), it quickly gets to the device boot pin screen, where it used to sit forever until you entered the pin. Now, it will show the screen, but continue to boot behind the scenes. When you swipe up to unlock after boot, you get the keypad from the original boot pin screen, and the whole thing hangs. I've tried this several times and also disabled/reenabled PIN. NO luck.
Only way past is to immediately enter boot pin when the screen appears, but before finishing the full boot.
Second problem that many are having - trusted places (home/work) do not function after update. If you revert Google Play Services back to pre v7, it works again. I'm sure Google is all over this as many are talking about it.
**UPDATE**
More troubleshooting reveals that this happens only when you have both a startup PIN and SIM pin lock on the phone. If I remove the SIM lock pin, then it boots correctly, stopping at the startup PIN screen until entered. If I add a SIM pin, then it boots "through" the startup PIN, to the SIM PIN screen. Upon entering SIM pin, it takes you to regular lock pin screen, where it immediately hangs until reboot.
Anybody else experiencing this? Both pin's worked fine under 5.0.1
I cannot disable the screen lock!
I believe it is a result of that fact that I just enabled the Find My Device feature via google.com/android/device manager. I set up a password there. Then my phone locked, and I had to enter the pw to unlock it. Now, I always have to enter that pw to unlock the phone. I tried to turn off the password lock in the phone settings. Under Screen Lock Type, it says password. I am required to type in the pw, to turn it off. It temporarily changed to "Swipe", No Security. But then as soon as a navigate away from this screen on my phone, it goes back to "Screen Lock Type" - Password. I can't disable the screen lock! It's driving me nuts. So, I turned off the Find My Device feature. I also went into Phone Administrators and removed the radio button next to Find My Device. That didn't do it. I restarted the phone. I disabled google smartlock (I don't know if that is relevant). That didnt' work either. I read something about selecting Clear Credentials, but that option is grayed-out on my phone.
Please Help!!!
I come from a OnePlus3 that had encryption turned on. When setting the screen lock password it was possible to also require that password when booting into the device.
On the Mi 9 I can't get this setting turned on (it's not even a visible setting). The device is encrypted, but seems to be encrypted from factory and the encryption seems to be independent of the screen lock password. Perhaps Xiaomi sits on the encryption keys, something I need to change.
How do I ensure password is required to boot the device?
Hello everyone,
today I updated my phone (security update from xiaomi) so i had to restart my phone.
After restart it asked me to insert my PIN instead of Print, so I wasnted to put it in as usual but the pin is just never correct.
IS there a way to go around this WITHOUT LOSING DATA if im the true owner with correct fingerprint, all accounts verified etc?
The phone is not rooted neither with custom recovery.
Method 1:
1. After typing wrong password continuously for 5 times, you will see a screen with message “Phone has been locked” with “Forgot Password” option at the bottom.
try that
