I am currently using viper 7.0.1 and i get pretty consistent signal everywhere i go. I've been toying with some of the aosp roms and it seems like i loose signal more often is it the difference in the roms?

There is a well known fact that OEM base roms do not show the proper signal strength. It was even found that they removed the one bar image and just used one with 2 bars so you thought you had more signal then you did.
AOSP based roms show the true signal level.

Hi all,
I'm using latest MIUI ROM atm and love it. however there's a problem of the signal sign which stays on G all the time unless i'm doing any data-related task such as browsing or facebook. at that moment it will quickly change to HSDPA.
not sure if it's a feature or a bug by MIUI?
i have used trinity, coredroid and icecold, they're all good staying in H/3G
Just wondering if anyone else experiencing the same issue with MIUI rom?
I already tried the 27/28/29 radio as well
thanks for the replies

Does this happen everywhere or only in certain locations?
am sure you are aware that gprs/3g is dependent on the network strength.
so it could be cos of a low signal strength area.
since you have tried a couple of radios, try any other rom & check if the problem persists
My phone behaves like this too. But I believe it's carrier specific because when I was using the previous operator the signal always stay in H. Once I begin using current operator, the signal stay in 3G and will switch to H if I access mobile data.
Hi all,
yeah I did try other ROMs and it works alright (trinity and coredroid + icecold)
with the MIUI, the problem persists everywhere even when I change the radio
very hard for me to change MIUI because of the feature and the smoothness
now I set it to use 2G only to save battery
I guess it's not a feature in MIUI since changing between GPRS/HSPA drains the battery?

Actually you can try changing some settings in /system/build.prop. Look for these two settings:
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=6
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
If they're of different values, change them, reboot and see if there's any difference. Don't worry, if anything goes wrong, just change them back.
Hi,
I installed the 4.1 hellybean, and my GPS signal is very weak.
It was fine before, but now the phone has to have clear sky line or it doesnt lock on.
Even inside the car the signal is too weak to use.
Is there any other radio's competable with jellybean 4.1 i can flash? (Im not from europe/zUSA maybe thats why)

same here, I can get GPS fix but the accuracy is horrible, the position is off by hundreds of meters
On a clear line to the sky i get a lock immediatly and accurate.
But inside the car i cant get a lock. Only 3 sattelites visible. Wiith low signal.
Even if i toss it on the dashboard the accuracy is sometimes kilometers away (more then 10!)
I had a problem with the stock modem/radio when i flushed ginger2.3.6 but there were alot of other versions available and i found one with good signal to my provider (had a bad signal to the provider, not gps)

Hello all...
Are there any Sinless ROM 4.1 GE (or similar ROM) users out there who are finding signal strength, both on wi-fi and cell/data, to be weaker on this ROM than others? Is this just in how it is measured or might there be a radio issue?
Both seem to work, but it's distressing to be seeing no signal when I was used to two bars or more on stock...
Thanks!

It is just how it is measured/displayed, in the ROM threads there are a few posts on the ARGE for one
Thanks so much!
What would happen if I flashed a 4.3 rom while having the 1.29 radio? If it's like flashing a 4.1 rom while having the 3.04 radio (touchscreen doesn't work) could there be a way to make it work? I only went back to 1.29 to have better signal.

You don't need the new firmware for 4.3, it works perfectly with the old. But, if you update your firmware, it won't work on 4.1.2, because of the touchscreen driver

So, I could flash a sense 5.5, android 4.3 rom, while using the 1.29 radio, and it will work fine?
EDIT: Alright, so I flashed the ecliptic one rom thinking that the issues with the signal on 4.3 was the radio that came with the update.......well I guess I was wrong because the signal still says 1 bar of 4G, where I should have full bars. I can't think of what else would cause the issues.
Starting with 4.3, the bars show you the data signal instead of the voice signal. On the old version, full bars for you meant full bars of voice even if it said 4G next to it. You still had only 1 bar of 4G data, it just didn't show that.

I don't know, I should have much, much more signal then, the tower is really close to my house. Also with the battery had a big drain, and it would jump between 3g and 4g, like it was in a strain, it would get hot.
By putting the old radio on and still having the same issue, you have pretty much shown it was not the update causing it.
I had the same situation as you. As far as the heat and switching, you are probably noticing it more now since you saw the low bars.
My tower is only 3/4 of a mile from my house, I have clear line of sight to it, and I get 1 bar. It's just how Sprint is. My friend's S4 picks up a slightly better signal here, but it still constantly flips between 4G and 3G.
Hi guys,
I just flashed the latest Omnirom and Magisk om my OP3t. I noticed that my cell phone reception is worse than with OOS 4.5.1.
I was wondering if I can resolve this with flashing a modem firmware?
I found this XDA forum page that lists several modem firmwares: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/how-to/firmware-modem-collection-flashable-zips-t3565535
Can I just flash these over my Omnirom ROM? Are there any other things I should think about?
Thank for your help!
That's an outdated forum. Flash the latest Open Beta FW zip from this thread.
There shouldn't be any risk, but it's highly doubtful that your reception would be better just because you updated your FW.
On Oxygen OS the signal icon is tampered, the shown signal strength does not represent the real value.
This is why with all custom ROMs the signal may appear to be weaker than with OOS

That is a good point, one shouldn't assume reception based on the signal "bars", as they are not standardized by any means, and really don't mean much of anything.
User should look at the dB reception indicated in Settings>About phone>Status>SIM Status
Even then, I think I saw a post where someone claimed that OP meddles with the dB numbers reported?
Also, I'm not too familiar with OmniROM. Some custom ROMs flash firmware automatically, some don't. So it may be worth looking into, whether this particular ROM includes firmware or not.
But either way, if it's the latest OmniROM, and it included firmware, it should be an updated modem. If OmniROM doesn't include firmware, than it didn't touch the modem, and it was the same as before (4.5.1 modem I presume, since you mentioned it). So I'm confused why you think the modem is "worse" than before.
Thanks for all the answers all!

I assumed because I wasn't aware that the bars were not standardized and because 'fewer bars are filled' with Omnirom than with OOS. Furthermore, I wasn't able to receive phone calls yesterday at the office, which I am not sure I experienced when I was on OOS.
I have been looking at my dB for the cellular connection. Are there any pointers on what is considered good/acceptable/bad? I found these numbers on an older Howard Forum post, but I am not sure if they apply for all types of networks (GSM/H+/LTE/etc):
-105 to -100 = Bad/drop call
-99 to -90 = Getting bad/signal may break up
-89 to -80 = OK/shouldn't have problems, but maybe
-79 to -65 = Good
Over -65 = Excellent

Also, I flashed the Open Beta 25 - Oreo Modem Firmware, but it did not improve my reception unfortunately.
Thanks!

I've seen similar types of charts. Can't say how accurate they are. What I can say, is take them with a grain of salt. Right now I'm getting -109 dB at my work. Which is a location I consider good reception. Never get problems with voice calls in or out, and the data speeds are decent.
That is a good point about whether the charts apply to all the network types (GSM, HSPA, LTE). Since they are different network technologies, it makes sense that they might have different dB parameters about what constitutes good vs. bad.
